Letter from the CEO These past few weeks have been tough at our shelters. We’ve been especially full of medium and large dogs, and at one point, we simply ran out of space and had to pause taking in owner-surrendered pets. It’s never an easy decision, and it’s a reminder of just how great the need is right now.

But once again, this community showed up in the most incredible way.

Animal lovers across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties came together, opened their homes, and made room for pets who needed them most. In just one weekend, 96 animals found new homes. Even more special, many of our longest-term residents and senior pets finally got their second chance.

That kind of compassion changes lives. We’re so grateful to everyone who adopts, volunteers, fosters, and donates. You are the reason we can keep going, even in the busiest and most challenging seasons.

As we head into spring and summer, our shelters are still feeling the pressure. We continue to need fosters and volunteers to help care for the animals who rely on us every day.

Feature Story A SENIOR’S SECOND CHANCE:

How 14-year-old Nellie beat the odds and captured hearts.

A

t 14 years old, Nellie had already lived a full life, but she was still waiting for the most important chapter to begin.

When Nellie arrived at HSTB, she quickly made

an impression on everyone who met her. Gentle and affectionate, she loved nothing more than being held close and spending time with people. Declawed and especially fond of human companionship, Nellie seemed happiest when she was nestled safely in someone’s arms.

But Nellie also had a playful side that made her unforgettable. One of her favorite pastimes was splashing in her water bowl, happily pawing at the water. Even at 14, Nellie’s spirit was vibrant.

At HSTB, we welcome animals of all ages. Older pets are often overlooked, but senior animals like Nellie still have so much love to give. They

often form deep bonds with their families and bring a special kind of calm companionship into a home. Our goal is always the same, no matter the age of the animal: to provide comfort, care, and the opportunity for a happy life.

Cats are adopted more often than dogs at HSTB, but that doesn’t mean every cat finds their family right away. Some spend days or weeks waiting for the right person to walk through our doors. For Nellie, that person was Kylie.

Merger Brings a Bright, New Chapter for Animals On Both Sides of the Bay

A

t the start of 2026, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay entered an exciting new chapter in the mission to serve animals and families throughout the region. On January 2nd, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and the Humane Society of Pinellas officially merged—uniting two respected

organizations with a shared vision for a more compassionate community. Today, we operate as The Humane Society of Tampa Bay with two campuses: Hillsborough and Pinellas, expanding our reach and strengthening the lifesaving services provided to animals and the people who love them.

While the merger was built on years of collaboration, the progress we’ve made in just a short time has already demonstrated the power of working together.

One advantage of the merger is increased capacity to serve animals in need. For example, when the HSTB campus reached capacity in January, we were able to transfer incoming animals to the Sjowerman Adoption Center at the Pinellas campus, where open kennels and adoptive families were available. This ensured that no animal was turned away.

COMMUNITY FOCUS – BETTER TOGETHER Expanding Support for Families and Pets Keeping pets with the families who love them is a critical part of our mission. Since the merger, we have already made significant improvements to better serve our community.

The newly revamped Pinellas Pet Pantry has opened its doors, offering expanded support to families experiencing financial hardship. By providing pet food and supplies, we help ensure that pets can remain safely in their homes where they belong.

These efforts are part of our broader commitment to reducing unnecessary pet surrenders and strengthening the human–animal bond across Tampa Bay.

ark in the Park 2026 was an incredible celebration of pets, people, and the compassion that makes our community so special. Thousands of animal lovers and their four-legged

friends gathered for a day full of fun, from exciting activities and pet-friendly vendors to live entertainment and plenty of wagging tails. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, participants, and supporters, this year’s event helped raise critical funds to support the lifesaving work of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us and made the day unforgettable. How HSTB's TNVR and Working Cats Programs Help Tampa Bay's Felines Thrive

E

very spring and summer, HSTB experiences a significant increase in the number of kittens arriving at our shelters. Known

as “kitten season,” this time of year brings an overwhelming number of newborn and young cats who need care, foster homes, and adoption.

But while many kittens find loving homes, there is another large population of cats living outdoors in our community. These are often referred to as community cats, and two important programs help manage their populations humanely: TNVR (Trap– Neuter–Vaccinate–Return) and Working Cats.

Both programs are critical to reducing overpopulation, improving cat welfare, and helping our community coexist with outdoor cats compassionately.

What Is a Community Cat? Community cats are free-roaming cats who live outdoors rather than in traditional homes. Some are friendly and social, while others are feral,

meaning they are not comfortable around people and cannot safely live as indoor pets.

Without intervention, these cats can reproduce quickly. A single unspayed female cat can have multiple litters each year, and kittens can begin reproducing as early as five months of age. This rapid reproduction leads to large colonies of cats and more kittens entering shelters, especially during kitten season. That’s where TNVR comes in.

What Is TNVR? TNVR stands for Trap–Neuter–Vaccinate–Return.

Her passion and commitment to humane population control have made a lasting impact on both the animals and the people who care for them.

As Darlene begins this next chapter, we’re excited to share that Adam—known by many in the community as the “Cat Man”—will be stepping into the role. Adam has worked closely alongside Darlene for the past two years and is ready to continue building on the strong foundation she helped create. We’re grateful to Darlene for her years of service and look forward to seeing Adam lead the TNVR program into its next phase.

new 10,800-square-foot addition to the Claude and Lydia Melli Animal Hospital.

While we can’t wait to show everyone the finished space, we thought it would be fun to share a few sneak peeks along the way. Until it opens, we’ll highlight some of the features that will help us care for even more animals in the community. One of the features we’re especially excited about? A separate waiting room just for cats.

LIFE-SAVING PROGRAMS – ADOPTIONS HAPPY TAILS:

Long-term Residents Get Adopted!

SNOOPY JAY Joanne never misses the Pet of the Week on FOX13, but this morning was different. While getting ready for work, she saw Snoopy Jay—a 2-year-old terrier mix who had been waiting 86 days for a home after his owner was deployed—and knew she had to meet him. She called out of work and drove straight to HSTB! Now renamed Snoop, the smart, food-motivated pup quickly showed off his tricks and playful personality in the yard, and it was clear the two were meant to be. We’re so excited for Snoop and the wonderful life ahead of him!

Joe This 3-year-old terrier mix came to HSTB as a stray in December.

Staff soon discovered he was deaf after noticing he wouldn’t wake to voices or sounds—but that didn't stop him from being an incredibly friendly, people-loving pup. As staff worked with Joe they noticed his keen abilities with eye contact and hand signals for understanding communication. This special dog just needed a patient, understanding adopter who would work with him to master signals and who would gently wake him to keep him from becoming startled. This sweet boy was so lucky to find the perfect human and home where he is loved and embraced exactly as he is and will surely thrive.

INDIGO After 114 days in HSTB’s care, Indigo, a 7-year-old Catahoula Leopard Dog mix, found his perfect match at Bark in the Park.

Surrendered last October due to his owner’s declining health, Indigo patiently waited for a new beginning. Volunteer Pam Brown, who spent time as his dog companion, shared how special the moment was when “the nicest family” fell in love with his name, his age, and his calm demeanor. It was the perfect fit, and we’re so happy Indigo finally has the loving home he deserves.
