In Hull Libraries every book contains a world of adventures! You just need somewhere comfy to sit or lie, open your book and hey presto, you’re up and away!
At the Big Malarkey Festival, there’s an adventure in every tent! Come to the Big Top to meet authors, artists, musicians and more, with amazing stories to tell. In our smaller tents, you can play with words to write poetry, or stories, or make music, you could try some wonderful craft, drawing, digital wizardry and much more. If you need a break, you can just lie back with our Cloudscapes friends and let you mind travel through the sky or pull up a beanbag in the Library tent and dive into a book. An open-air event is subject to the weather. In case of rain we will try to continue the programme as far as safety allows – please check the forecast, and bring wet weather gear!
Kiosks serving light refreshments will be available, and there is plenty of room for picnickers.

This is a family festival and all activities are designed to be enjoyed by children accompanied by an adult. Unaccompanied children and adults will not be able to enter the site. If you want to pop out of the festival, please note there are no crèche facilities on site. If you lose each other please contact a steward.
The festival is an inclusive, Relaxed event, accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The site is wheelchair friendly, with disabled toilets. Many events are BSL interpreted - please check individual event details.
Malarkey Park is in East Park. The park is located to the east of the city centre, on Holderness Road, Hull, HU8 8JU.
The festival site is situated on the field towards the football and rugby pitches - the nearest entrance is Holderness Road.

Try your hand at traditional bushcraft practices such as shelter building, earth-building and green woodwork and explore how these traditional skills have been used throughout history.
Take a wild adventure to the coastline of Yorkshire to discover Jurassic fossils from the beaches of Speeton and Filey Bay. Learn about how and when these fossils were created and then have a chance to make your own ammonites and belemnites to take home with you.
Hull’s award-winning hip hop artists are back with a bus-full of workshops to explore the magic of music, and the power of sharing.
Drop by for rap, poetry and spoken word workshops. Have a go at graffiti style lettering and drawing, or create a breakdancing routine with your friends. It’s all about friendship, kindness and imagination – come and enjoy!
Discover sailors’ strange stories of sea monsters - and maybe have a go at making, or writing about, your own?
For centuries, seafarers have told stories about strange creatures they claimed to have encountered in the oceans. From Krakens to Mermaids, many of these stories have passed into myth and legend, The Maritime Museum even has its own mermaid, as well as some beautiful depictions of mermaids and other creatures in the form of scrimshaw carvings. There will be objects from the museum collections to inspire you, and members of the Hull Maritime team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about our amazing project.
Big Top Art Exhibition: Students from HEY Children’s University, Endike Primary School, Eastfield Primary School, Cavendish Primary School and Thoresby Primary School have helped us to plan this year’s festival and have created 6 fabulous Big Top sculptures. Can you find them all displayed across Malarkey Park?
Visit the Cloud Museum Trailer and relax on a giant beanbag to enjoy the fabulous Cloudscapes, part-installation and part performance by Gobbledegook Theatre.
As you lie back to watch the clouds you’ll listen on headphones to a story all about the clouds, the sky and Lorna’s journey of a lifetime with her father. A wonderful way to spend some time at Malarkey Park. If you prefer to use your own headphones and device you can scan a QR code on site.

In this you’llhands-onmagical,workshop learn how puppets can be made from anything that you can find. Caroline from Swallow’sWings Puppetry Company will demonstrate how puppets are used to tell stories from around the world and help you to make your own.
A relic of a bygone era, Sir Kuss has failed to ‘get with the times’ and has been sent on permanent vacation by the Knightly Order.
His over-laden Squire, struggling with swords, baggage and inflatables alike, reenacts tales of Sir Kuss’ exploits - from dragon slaying to feats of axe juggling. Sir Kuss, on the other hand, bravely fights the perils of sunburn, locked in an eternal battle with a deck chair.

As the last surviving members of their rather intensive book club, they must embark on a quest to recruit more radical readers to their cause. Without new members, the book club and the books it has sworn to protect, will surely perish! These Hardback Heroes can’t let such a tragic epilogue come to pass.

In May 2024, young artists from across Hull attended stop-frame animation workshops with Virpi Kettu (Aardman, Creature Comforts, Wallace and Gromit, Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Radiohead, Katy Perry) to create short, collaborative, stop-frame animation films on the theme of ‘A World of Adventures’.

Passionate about sharing uplifting material with others, Olivia has taken to the stage performing her poetry. She runs poetry workshops for both children and adults and in 2021, she was appointed BBC Radio York’s Poet Laureate.

A workshop with celebrated East Yorkshire artist Eleanor Tomlinson, learning watercolour and ink techniques to create beautiful images of Yorkshire wildlife.

A Big Malarkey welcome to the The Albemarle Soul Band! Their young musicians will be performing classic tracks from the soul and motown era including Proud Mary, Respect and Hard to Handle!
