MR ROBERTS

A recent favoured read of mine this year was “Swan Song” by Kelleigh Greenberg-Jephcott, an author born in Houston, Texas, before studying drama in Los Angeles and creative writing in East Anglia. She is married to an English actor and has worked as a screen writer. The idea for the book, based on real life events involving Truman Capote (an author himself ) came to Jephcott whilst living and working in Provence, France. I chose this novel on the basis of a recommendation from a former student and it took my eye, having read other novels by Capote. I love the way the ‘plot’ shifts between various decades and continents, weaving a background story in the southern states in the ‘50s, with rumour and gossip in New York and Los Angeles in the ‘60s and ‘70s, conveying the power of writing.

OUR FAVOURITE BOOKS

MR LATHAM SECOND IN ENGLISH

MRS ROBINSON My all-time favourite read is ‘Regeneration’ by Pat Barker – an English writer. The novel is centred around my favourite war poets (Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon) and explores their time at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh where they were sent as a punishment for publishing poems which provided a realistic view of war. Not only does this novel show a relentless camaraderie between the characters in chaotic circumstances, but it also provides a stark reminder of the long-lasting damage war can have on an individual (even after the physical fighting has stopped). This novel also taught me the important message that everybody has a voice which deserves to be heard.

Adam Kay was a junior doctor from 2004 until 2010. He documented his training through a very truthful, griping yet hilarious diary. ‘This Is Going to Hurt’ intersperses tales from the front line of the NHS. The result is a first-hand account of life as a junior doctor in all its joy, pain, sacrifice and maddening bureaucracy, and a love letter to those who might at any moment be holding our lives in their hands. I devoured this book in a single sitting. It is rare to find a book that can make you laugh and cry in equal measure-- especially, I think, a nonfiction book --but this one managed it just fine. Kay finishes his hilarious and touching tales with a direct plea to the government and to us to take the NHS and its doctors seriously. To respect it and them. To not take the work done for granted. Such a powerful and important read wrapped up in a highly-entertaining package.

MRS BLOOMFIELD My favourite book this year is ‘The Labyrinth of the Spirits’ by Spanish author, Carlos Ruiz Zafon. The story is set in one of my favourite places, Barcelona, among the gothic architecture of Las Ramblas and surrounding streets that wind among dark, mysterious alleyways. The main characters are based in an old bookshop run by a family throughout the generations. The

plot involves intrigue, adventure, murder, romance and drama. I love the idea of a Cemetery of Forgotten Books and the way the importance and value of books and reading is interweaved throughout the plot. Zafon’s style keeps the reader turning page after page, gripped with suspense!

AROUND THE WORLD

T

ravel is an excellent opportunity to explore new places – and books allow you to experience them from the comfort of your own home or school. At Hull Collegiate, we want you to embark on a literary journey using four books of your choice. In this booklet, you will be asked several questions about the texts you have read. Each book must be linked to one of the continents of the world, it could be the author was born in that continent, the story is set there,

the characters were born there...the world literally is your oyster. Travel the globe through literature, diversify your reading and uncover hidden gems then tell us about it! You have seven continents to choose from. Complete the relevant section for your chosen continent. When you have read your books, can you take the final challenge to use your new vocubulary and tell us a story?

“IF YOU ONLY READ THE BOOKS THAT EVERYONE ELSE IS READING, YOU CAN ONLY THINK WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS THINKING.”

Why are first books afraid of their sequels? Because they always come after them.

MEET THE AUTHOR

MEET THE AUTHOR Julia in Year 11 at Hull Collegiate School had her first book ‘Kadazar’ published last year. On the night of his birth, Kadazar, a griffin, receives a prophecy. It claims that he will become a great king of Lastania. When still a child, he befriends Evening Star, adventurous yet disliked by others for her unusual abilities. When Kadazar turns sixteen, a cruel and powerful dragon, Midzar, invades the peaceful land of mythical creatures. Their home is changed beyond recognition. Many lives are needlessly lost. Thrown together to get revenge on Midzar, the friends need to bond like never before…

WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR IDEA FOR YOUR BOOK? I have enjoyed reading from a young age, and so my book, Kadazar, was mostly inspired by the other fantasy books I have read. I was inspired to create the characters and basic ideas long before I began to write the story, but reading other books helped these ideas to take root and develop into a story of their own. Developing ideas into a full story can be a difficult task, but reading other books has helped me develop the world of Kadazar.

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A GOOD STORY? To write a good story, it is important to develop a consistent style of writing suitable for the style and genre of the book, and the intended audience. An intriguing opening can keep the reader wanting to find out more, and a well-written plot ensures that the journey is enjoyable and entertaining. A powerful ending provides a satisfying conclusion to the story, allowing for the reader to reflect on their experience with the characters’ story. However, I think the most important factor is the characters. A fictional world relies on its characters to create an engaging story, and making them unique and memorable ensures that their story interests the readers and keeps their attention.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE THE BOOK? I started writing my book about three years before it was published. Because I had developed the initial idea long before I began to write Kadazar, I completed the original manuscript quite quickly. However, the writing process was far from complete. The longest part was the editing process, which took over two years, with multiple drafts and edited versions before I produced the final book.

REVIEWS

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- written by bestselling, British author J.K Rowling is a masterpiece of modern literature. With a slightly darker tone than its 3 predecessors, The Goblet of Fire unveils a new aspect of the Wizarding World, digging deeper into the lore and history. Get ready to be drawn into a world of action, mystery, magic and homework. It is a genius novel with mysteries and twists every few chapters. In each chapter, something happens- anything from a detention to a fight with a dragon- which leaves you hooked onto the book, wanting to know what’s next. An overall amazing book and a mustread for lovers of fantasy (but read the first three books first). Tomazask (age 12)

ALEX RIDER Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz is the first novel to feature teenage spy, Alex Rider. In this novel, Alex’s uncle dies in what he is told is a car accident. However, after doing some investigating on his own, Alex discovers his uncle was actually murdered. Leon (age 12)

LORD OF THE RINGS My chosen book is ‘The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring’. This is written by JRR Tolkien and is set in an ancient, mythical land called ‘Middle Earth’. It is full of dark creatures, shady characters and humble Hobbits. I like how the story begins with Bilbo Baggins, a small

MISTRESS OF ALL EVIL

CHERUB CHERUB is a series of teenage spy novels written by English author Robert Muchamore, focusing around a division of the MI5 called CHERUB, which employs children, predominantly orphans, under the age of 17, as intelligence agents. The main character is James Choke but he changed his name to James Adams as he enters CHERUB and performs various missions. However, some other characters come in to the story later on, such as James’ sister Lauren and several other characters who work alongside him and in separate missions. Lewis (age 11)

Serena Valentino is a comic book-writer, based in San Francisco, she created the comic book series Gloomcookie and Nightmares & Fairy Tales. Although she has many books about the Disney princesses and the villains I prefer the one about Maleficent. Throughout the book it talks about her back story it also mentions other well-known villains and princesses even though many new characters are introduced throughout the story. Whilst the story is mostly based around love and betrayal, magic and fantasy it also shows what Maleficent was and why she turned evil in the first place. Lacey (age 12)

M AX EINSTEIN The author is James Patterson. It is a really fun read about children who are geniuses. They have to come up with solutions to solve problems they come across but there are people who want Max (the leader) on their side because she is the smartest, they
