Welcome to the Michaelmas Term 2019 edition of Collegiate Life showcasing the range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities afforded to our pupils alongside their academic studies. From Sport to Music, Politics to Engineering, Philosophy to Art, Poetry to Chemistry, stargazing to community recognition alongside many speakers, fundraising activities and performances which set the scene for the Christmas period. Award Winning School Hull Collegiate students, staff and parents are very much a part of the local community. Students regularly take part in a variety of charitable activities on both a local and global scale, helping to raise funds and awareness for causes close to their hearts. Each year group at HCS has an appointed Parent Class Rep to help new families settle into our school community. The Class Reps’ annual Macmillan Coffee Morning now raises over £1100, with all members of the school community (including local residents and alumni) invited. Alongside national charity days, we are proud to be able to support our families in raising awareness/funds for a number of worthy causes. During the academic 2018/19 year we took part in events for Candlelighters, Hull 4 Heroes, Jerry Green Dog Rescue and the reduction in single use plastics, creating furniture from our eco bricks. 4
When Year 9 pupil Julia had her first novel published, she requested the help of the school to launch her book Kadazar and through direct sales has raised several hundred pounds for the Hull and East Riding branch of the RSPCA. Sixth Form pupils volunteer weekly at Ganton School which is a local state school for 3 -19 year olds with severe learning difficulties. We are a licensed centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and have assisted other centres in our area by donating camping equipment and computers as well as hosting the regional awards ceremony free of charge. Since December 2017, Hull Collegiate School is very proud to be the only school in Yorkshire that supports the charity ReEngage (formerly Contact the Elderly). We provide a team of volunteer drivers and our venue to host a community activity for a group of isolated elderly residents. Guests are invited to tea parties and school productions which help break the cycle of loneliness. For the last five academic years the Senior School has hosted academic, music, sport and drama specialist days for primary school children. In November 2018, we welcomed over 300 Year 5 children to the Humber Stem in Action days, an event that had been unable to take part the year before due to funding shortages. Children took part in specialised workshops and met some of our region’s most prestigious STEM employers including BAE, Smith & Nephew, ARCO and the University of Hull. In June 2019, we welcomed 300 Year 5 pupils for our annual day of wizardry and witchcraft. Children took part in potion making workshops, flying lessons, arithmancy and occlumency lessons, and learnt about rhunes and codes. These days have allowed pupils to access facilities and learning resources unavailable at their current school. In addition to all of the above regional activities we are incredibly proud of Safi Coffee, the business run by pupils whose profits are used to fund the education of children at four partner schools in Uganda. Alex Wilson, Headmistress, said, ‘’To be recognised for our achievements at this level is fantastic. I am proud of our students and school community for the hard work and support that is continually given to helping our community which is such an important part of our school life. Our community work is a key component of our commitment to deliver an education with character. It teaches our students a broad range of skills and encourages them to be enterprising, compassionate and responsible individuals.”

Day 2: Performing ‘Suo Gan’ at the Insitut de Tossa de Mar this morning to a large hall of very lively pupils. All filmed for local TV and followed by a session during which they answered questions about Hull and the school.

Cabinet Minister In December, Sixth Form Business Studies and Economics students met William Priest. William was appointed a Director in the Cabinet Office and Chief Executive Officer of the Geospatial Commission in 2018. The new Geospatial Commission sits at the centre of government, to direct efforts across public-sector data bodies and coordinate HMG’s approach to geospatial data. The CEO is a new role that has been created to help deliver this vision, and will oversee strategy, implementation and value creation.

Sixth Form Welcome Dragons’ Den Winners In November, we welcomed Gillian Robson and Katy Foxcroft the co-founders of Tancream. In April 2019, following a terrifying experience in the Dragon’s Den, the entrepreneurs opted to team up with new Dragon Sara Davies, and Touker Suleyman, who proposed to split the £75,000 investment, in exchange for an equal 12.5% stake. Gillian and Katy presented in the Senior School assembly, followed by a Q&A session with Sixth Form Business Studies students. They told the story of how the idea for the product was born, it’s long R&D journey and their more recent experience of the den and how their relationship with their new business partners has evolved.

Prep School Trips Forest School
All year groups from Reception through to Year 6 enjoyed a day at Humberdale Farm for their first Forest School session of the academic year.
Panto Visit
As part of our English and wider curriculum of cultural experiences encompassing People and Communities, Foundation Stage and Pre-Prep went to see the production of Aladdin at The Baths Hall, Scunthorpe.
A Victorian Christmas
Year 1 experienced a Victorian Christmas in Hull. The children helped Mrs Miggins get her house ready at the Hands on History museum, then later that day they experienced life in a rather different school setting at the Wilberforce museum.
The Deep
Year 2 pupils learnt about the polar bear homes in an educational workshop at The Deep before exploring the award-winning attraction.
The Ancient Egyptians
Year 3 had a wonderful time visiting the Hands on History museum in Hull. This was a fantastic introduction to their topic The Ancient Egyptians. They took part in three workshops, learned all about mummification and even mummified Erin! They wrote their names in hieroglyphics and made their very own papyrus paper - not to mention meeting a real mummy!
Wilberforce House
As part of Year 5’s Humanities topic Black History, they travelled to Wilberforce House to look at the life of William Wilberforce and explore the abolition of slavery.

Senior School Trips
The Waterline Summit Conference Year 11, 12 and 13 Geographers attended the regions largest ever decarbonisation event. Students were able to access over 40 exhibitors who demonstrated the innovative ways they are working towards zero-carbon Humber. They also took part in interactive seminars to gather disruptive ideas. Former student Poppy (pictured above) gave a keynote speech with details of how Willerby Homes are addressing climate change.

Royal Armouries, Leeds On Monday 14 October, Year 8 travelled to the Royal Armouries in Leeds for a History workshop on the English Civil Wars called ‘To kill a kill’. The weather was kind so we were drilled for battle with both pikes and muskets on the tilt yard, and had the chance to try on some authentic armour. It was great fun, with quite a lot of learning thrown in!
Coastal Erosion Year 11 Geographers travelled to Hornsea to evaluate the effectiveness of the sea defenses. Pupils must complete two fieldwork opportunities during the GCSE course to prepare for the Geographical applications examination, of which this is the first.

Harry Potter World GCSE and A Level D&T, Art, Photography and Textiles students experienced the magic of Harry Potter with a behind the scenes tour at the Warner Brothers Studios., London.

Death of a Salesman In November, A Level English Literature students attended a performance of “Death of a Salesman� at the Piccadilly Theatre, London.
RS/Philosophy conference in Cambridge at Emmanuel URC GCSE and A Level RS students attended the Academy Conferences to hear world class professors presenting on a range of fascinating philosophical problems.
Peter Pan In December, all of Year 7 enjoyed the pantomime performance of Peter Pan at Hull Truck Theatre. It has become the custom for our Year 7 pupils to finish the Michaelmas term with a Christmas outing to celebrate their achievements during their first term in the Senior School.

National Poetry Day In order to celebrate National Poetry Day on the 3 October, Hull Collegiate students and staff went one step further by holding their own poetry week. Throughout their tutor sessions, students completed a range of ‘poetry-based’ challenges ranging from quizzes and creative writing opportunities, to in-depth discussions about the impact poetry has on the local economy and the differences between slam poetry and rap. A special mention must go to 8Webb who scored 100% on the poetry quiz and 7Taylor who created a beautiful poem about the realities of love. Considering that these groups were competing against older peers, these are certainly achievements to be proud of. The English Department and Library Service also organised a whole-school poetry competition based on the theme of ‘New Beginnings’: the winning entry won a £50 Theatre Voucher. The Senior Teaching Team immersed themselves into the week’s celebrations: poems were displayed outside classroom doors and teachers took moments out of their lessons to reminisce, read and discuss their favourite poems. Poetry is stereotypically stigmatised and overlooked by young people. However, it has been a true privilege to witness Collegians of all ages show an enthused and impassioned interest throughout the week. The Library and English Team are continuing to receive numerous pieces from newly inspired writers which are all a pleasure to read.

Pony Rider of the Year On Tuesday 2 October the annual British Showjumping Awards Ball took place at the St Johns Hotel, Solihull. Almost 400 guests attended the Ball to celebrate an array of nominees and winners from grassroots level all the way up to the members of the Bronze Medal winning European Championship Team. We are proud to announce Year 12 Holly won the Leading Pony Rider of the Year Award. This follows a hugely successful summer for Holly riding for Team GB at the Pony European Championships in Strzegom, Poland. Not only did Team GB win Silver, Holly also won the Individual Silver medal in a nail biting jump off against France’s Ilona Mezzadri. Holly took the Silver medal riding her beloved Rexter d’Or, a 14 year-old grey stallion. Holly and Rexter d’Or entered the Individual Final in equal first after having been one of only four combinations able to deliver three clear rounds across two competitions. Thirty-one came forward for the Individual Final and the track proved to be tricky with ponies and riders picking up penalties all around the course. Holly and Rexter d’Or had an unfortunate foot in the water in their first round, but they went on to deliver a foot perfect clear in round two. With the pair having been so strong in their previous rounds, they were assured of a medal, but the colour was to be decided in a jump off for the Individual Silver and Bronze. The Individual Gold was already won by Ireland’s Max Wachman on Cuffesgrange Cavalidam and Holly’s opponent in the jump off was France’s Ilona Mezzadri on Callas Rezidal Z. Holly was the first to come forward in the jump off and she set the standard when producing a superb clear in just 34.46 seconds. This piled the pressure onto Ilona who went on to have two fences down for 8 penalties. After the medal ceremony, a clearly thrilled Holly said “It was such an amazing feeling when we jumped clear in the second round as we were unlucky at the water in round one. Coming into the jump off, I knew that I didn’t have much to lose, so I planned to jump as fast as I could whilst being careful over the fences and today, it paid off! Rexter d’Or has been amazing.’’ Clare Whitaker, Chef d’Equipe for the Pony Team and British Showjumping Youth Team Manager said “Holly rode the round of her life to secure the silver medal. She was quite exceptional and her place on the podium couldn’t be more deserved.” ‘’I am thrilled for Holly. We are all so proud of her success. To ride for Team GB and win a two Silver medals is a huge achievement. I look forward to watching her progress even further.’’ Alex Wilson, Headmistress. 22
HCS celebrates Roald Day 2019 Roald Dahl (1916–1990) was one of the world’s most imaginative, successful and loved storytellers. His stories are currently available in 59 languages. Last week we celebrated Roald Dahl Day with children from Nursery through to Senior School. Mr Henderson started the celebrations early with a Year 8 and 9 Matilda themed assembly on Thursday. Students read a passage from the book and explained why creativity and imagination are important. We watched the cake scene and five students were rewarded with a chocolate cake baked by cook! Year 5 and 6 listened to The Chocolate Room from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and designed their own Willy Wonka chocolate bar.

Top of the Bench In November, four students from Year 9 to Pre-Sixth; Timmy, Toby, Tabitha and Josh were chosen to take part in the RSC Top of the Bench competition held at The University of Hull. It was held over two consecutive Tuesday evenings where on the first evening a written test was taken by each member of the team followed by a series of quick fire chemistry table top challenges. On the second evening the students carried out a group practical experiment within a professional university teaching laboratory. There were six teams in total all from local schools. Congratulations are in order, as through excellent team work, chemistry knowledge, problem solving skills and practical ability, our students came second. Collegiate Stargazing In October, the first Collegiate Stargazing event of this academic year took place. Current pupils, staff, family friends and grandparents joined Mr Norris to see what the night skies had to offer. Since Collegiate Stargazing began, guests have been shown how to use the school’s collection of telescopes and when conditions have been favourable they have observed and photographed the moon and Venus. Stargazing takes place on the first Monday of every month. On the few occasions we have had inclement weather the Stargazing has been replaced by talks on all aspects of Astrophysics, on a level accessible to all. Community A number of charitable activities took place in the Michaelmas Term including: • Being a drop off point for the Viking FM Mission Christmas Appeal. • Taking part in the Real Aid Appeal Christmas shoe box appeal so gifts are delivered to children in Romania and Syria. • Hosting monthly tea parties for our Contact The Elderly group, providing a social occasion for local isolated elderly residents. • Prep pupils baked masterpieces and Seniors wore something spotty raising £419 for Children In Need. • Class Reps hosted their annual Macmillan Coffee Morning raising £1010. • Harvest Festival donations were provided for the Hull Foodbank. • Mr Webb ran the Great North Run in a time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 55 seconds raising over £200 for The Candlelighters Trust. • Year 7 raised £42.53 for St Martin’s House with their bake sale. • ICT equipment was donated to Hessle Community Centre to make the centre accessible to the internet for users of the centre. • Tents and rucksacks were donated to Hessle High School to help their new Duke of Edinburgh unit. • HCS Movember led by Mr Windeatt raised £1645.

STEM in Action In November, Hull Collegiate School hosted a STEM in Action event welcoming over 700 Year 5 primary pupils from our region. Each pupil visited five workshops during the day, hosted by some of our areas biggest STEM names including BAE, AIRCO, Arco, and racing for Schools. The event takes place annually, but this was the first year HCS had hosted it. It was wonderful to welcome such a large volume of pupils to enjoy the interactive workshops. A huge thank you to all the exhibitors, without their support the event could not have taken place

Beryl Goes To London!
Our very own Annie and Jessica perform at the Arcola Theatre in London. Following the huge success of Beryl earlier this year, actors Annie Kirkman and Jessica Duffield who also teach Drama at Hull Collegiate School, will be performing at the Arcola Theatre in London from 16 October. Annie and Jessica are part of She Productions, an all-female collective based in Hull & East Yorkshire who develop and produce vibrant original work driven by the female voice, alongside accessible and bespoke outreach programmes serving local communities. Their mission is to educate, to collaborate and make women heard. Previous productions include: The StorytEllas, Beverley Does Broadway, It’s Different for Girls and MissCast. Hull Collegiate’s Head of Drama, Andrea Asbury, said, ‘’Our pupils are really lucky to have two trained and highly skilled professional actors teach them drama. This gives them access to professional productions and reinforces our strong link with East Riding Theatre in Beverley where some of our pupils have appeared on stage.’’

Connexin Live
On Tuesday 1 October, a number of students in Years 7-13 attended Connexin Live, hosted by ex-students Alex Yeung and Furqan Alamgir. Expert industry speakers from across the globe discussed and demonstrated how data can be used to enhance economies and improve lives. Mr Wainman was also invited as a keynote speaker to address how technology has impacted our leaning in the classroom. They explored: • How data in the water industry is reducing leaks and providing new ways to manage flooding • How information about the quality of air around us can help saves lives • How data from CCTV can be used to manage anti-social behaviour, manage road congestion and much more • How IoT is driving efficiency in the manufacturing and private sectors.

On Tuesday 10 December, we supported the annual Macmillan Concert at Beverley Minster. Featuring Prep School Choir, Collegiate Chorus, Harpist Isabelle and the Barcelona Choir On Friday 13 December, Senior School pupils attended the Christmas Carol Service at Hull Minster. It included readings by staff and pupils and carols by Collegiate Chorus.

The Michaelmas Term is a particularly busy one for the Friends of Hull Collegiate School (FoHCS). Their first event, The Michaelmas Ball, welcomed over 100 guests and raised £4800. The Christmas Fair was attended by the whole community and through its sales of stalls, refreshments, crafts and Santa’s Grotto raisied several thousand pounds. Thank you to everyone who has supported these events this term.

HCS Parent Talks In September, we welcomed Victor Allen to talk to our parent community about understanding and supporting theirchild’s emotional behaviour. Victor is an international speaker, expert in emotional intelligence and author. In November, Marcus Orlovsky presented to the Senior School pupils and later on that evening met with parents and friends of the school speaking about what the future could hold in store for our children and their parents. Marcus is a serial entrepreneur. Identifying opportunity, strategising, overcoming challenges and ultimately succeeding is in his nature, as is educating. Starting off with a grounding in finance (he is a Chartered Accountant, having trained with Touche Ross/Deloitte and later moving on to Ernst & Young), he went through Stanhope (a major real estate developer) before branching out into a start-up tech company and ultimately founding Bryanston Square, an organisation committed to enhancing life chances through education. His strap line is “Achieve More�.

Year 8 Technology Day On Wednesday 2 October, all Year 8 pupils took part in the annual Technology Day. This year, the theme which looks at sustainability, had an autumnal twist. Pupils made sweet and savoury bread items for their ‘Harvest Supper’, tea light holders and collaborated in a large scale art mosaic project to create a mural for the Sixth Form Centre.

Japanese Storytelling On 25 September, pupils were fortunate to have a special guest , Shizue Omitani, a former primary school teacher, who introduced them to Kamishibai, Japanese storytelling. Seven classes and 88 pupils heard three folktales called Everybody Clap, Baby Chick and How the Witch was Eaten Up.

On Saturday 7 December, senior boys experienced a great day of rugby with Leicester City Tigers. They had a rugby masterclass before lunch then watched a fantastic win which included no less than six England players.
