With exams swift around the corner for both Pre-Sixth and Upper Sixth year groups, coupled with a sense of giddiness for the summer as the temperature rises, it is easy to allow our thoughts to drift towards the future. However, with the reality that this will be my final year at Hull Collegiate, the importance of looking backwards and commemorating the achievements of everyone at this school has been made starkly clear to me. It has been intensely enjoyable to compile examples of the success and endeavours experienced

by Collegians young and old this year as it not only enhanced my pride of the school but reminded me of my own time here, beginning all the way back in Reception. It is with this that I hope this edition of The Collegian acts as a source of pleasure for those reading it as it did for me to edit it.

EYFS Redevelopment The perfect place to deliver an Education with Character

On Friday 4th May 2018, Hull Collegiate School’s eagerly awaited Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Centre officially opened its doors to pupils, parents and teachers.

The new centre has been carefully designed to give the school’s youngest pupils an inspiring, welcoming and spacious place to learn and play. Along with all the facilities you would expect such as bright and airy classrooms and state-of-the-art technology, the new centre boasts a fantastic outdoor space which seeks to inspire imaginative play amongst pupils. It includes a sand and water discovery area, a story-telling corner, a mud kitchen and even a hobbit house!

There are also cycle tracks, climbing towers and building and construction zones. Pupils can try their hand at gardening in the centre’s self-contained growing area and play in the wild camp corner, the double wigwam dens and potting station. They can even let their imaginations run away with them as they explore the magical secret garden leading onto a woodland experience which includes a safe waterside pond viewing area and amphitheatre.

To mark the opening of the spectacular new facilities, the school hosted a party for current

and prospective pupils and their families. To reflect the new centre’s potential for imaginative story-telling, children dressed up as their favourite characters from Julia Donaldson books and participated in a host of exciting themed activities whilst indulging in ice-cream. Each activity contributed to the magic of the redevelopment, making for an electric atmosphere.

One parent said: “The new centre is breath-taking! It is a very warm, safe and welcoming environment and the school should be very proud of its achievements!”

Opening the centre, Jon Coles said: “Every aspect of this centre has been designed with children in mind; from the bright and spacious classrooms to the spectacular outdoor space, children will be inspired to be creative, use their imagination and try new things. It has been a pleasure to open the centre and to see children’s faces light up as they explore their new environment.”

It’s the Hard Knock Life For Us The Senior School production in March 2018 was the hit Broadway musical Annie.

Annie was played by Year 7 and students Mollie and Maisie

My experience doing the senior production of Annie was really enjoyable and something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Being new to the school this year, I found that the production meant that I became close to a wide range of people from different year groups, and got to meet students and members of staff that I may not have crossed paths with in my time here otherwise.

Before I joined the school, I came to see last year’s production of Grimm Tales, and it was one of the main reasons I decided to move here because I wanted to be part of a school that had so much dedication to producing quality theatre; this year’s production confirmed that I made the right

decision. It really felt as though I was part of a professional musical, and that was also reflected in that fact that each performer was treated as a professional. I loved being in Annie and am very grateful to have been a part of the whole experience.

Drama Success Pupils across the Prep and Senior School have celebrated stage success. They secured highly competitive places at the National Youth Theatre and were cast in local productions and national films.

It’s A Wonderful Life Year 9 student Conor and Year 7 student Louis appeared in a stage adaptation of Frank Capra’s classic 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life this Christmas at East Riding Theatre in Beverley. Jake Smith maked his ERT directorial debut with this ever-popular Christmas classic.

Hull Collegiate School works very closely with the directors at East Riding Theatre who see the huge talent amongst our Drama students. These strong links have enabled Conor and Louis to secure these roles and work with such a talented director.

Acting Debuts for Prep Pupils National Youth Theatre Success We are delighted to announce Hattie (Year 13) has been invited to join the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain and Chloe (Year 8) has been invited to join the National Youth Music Theatre of Great Britain.

The National Youth Theatre gives young people the opportunity to learn as much about themselves and how to relate to others, as they do about acting and technical theatre.

Whilst some of their members go on to become well known faces of stage and screen, many others go on to be great lawyers, journalists, doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, CEOs and much more.

Hattie and Chloe have done exceptionally well in getting through the extremely competitive audition process.

Year 5 pupil Eloise made her big screen acting debut on July 6 when The More You Ignore Me opened in cinemas. Written by Jo Brand, Eloise played Young Alice, the daughter of Sheridan Smith and Mark Addy alongside other well-known actors.

Edward in Year 7 also makes his acting debut in the upcoming film ‘The Last Trip’, which is based on the Triple Trawler Tragedy and the 58 men who lost their lives at sea from the port of Hull. He will be playing the younger version of one of the real trawler men. The film was released December 2018.

Wassail Wins Award Wassail! Carols of Comfort and Joy, which was commissioned by United Learning, has won the Classic FM Best Classical Music Education Initiative at this year’s Music Teachers Awards.

The piece premiered in two concerts in December, bringing together over 1000 staff and students from across United Learning’s schools, including those from Hull Collegiate School.

Written by celebrated composer Alexander L’Estrange and conducted by him at the two premieres, Wassail! was created to inspire collaboration, musical excellence and joy through choral singing. Performers from United Learning academies and independent schools took part in the premieres in London and Manchester, side by side with acclaimed vocal ensemble Apollo 5 in a unique national initiative that also included teacher training, schools’ workshops, recording sessions and design projects.

The award, which was presented to Catherine Barker, United Learning’s Head of Music and Performing Arts, was voted for by the general public via Classic FM. Alexander L’Estrange said: “I’m incredibly proud of ‘Wassail!’ From writing the work, recording and rehearsing it across the country with hundreds of amazing students and their brilliant teachers, to conducting the premieres – the whole process has been a complete joy. Thank you to everyone at United Learning and our supporters!”

James Webb, Director of Music at Hull Collegiate School, who took part in the event said: “Being part of the creation of this amazing new piece was so exciting for all the students.

Our choir was honoured to be asked to sing one part, ‘The Wexford Carol’, on our own at the first performance in Manchester. The entire piece was beautifully organised to ensure that all ages and abilities, as well as students from different schools across the country, could join together.”

A Year of Music and Drama Performing arts at HCS continue to be an incredible way for pupils to express themselves whilst developing confidence. This year has seen a host of shows and performances which have demonstrated our pupils talent and passion for music and drama.

Beverley Minster Concert Harp Performance The annual Beverley Minster Christmas Carol Concert in support of Macmillan Cancer Support celebrated its 15th year.

With high quality music and speakers followed by festive refreshments it was the perfect way to get into the festive spirit whilst supporting a worthwhile cause. The concert took place on Tuesday 12 December and we were proud to be part of this event with our combined choirs sounding spectacular.

Year 7 music scholar Isabelle delighted pupils in the Prep and Senior School with a special assembly showcasing her musical talent on the harp.

Isabelle was awarded a music scholarship for entry into Year 7 in September 2017. She has been playing the harp for just three years and is already an accomplished musician. Isabelle’s music

teacher, Rachel Jerome, is delighted with her progress.

Carol Service Every year we celebrate our annual carol service at Hull Minster. A popular community event which includes pupil and staff readings, Prep, Senior and Staff Choirs.

Termly Concerts Every term, pupils from the Prep and Senior School get the opportunity to perform in ticketed concerts. All are heavily supported by parents, staff and pupils.

The Spring Term Music Concert was a real celebration of the quality of music performance at the school. The audience enjoyed a variety of musical styles, ranging from music by Strauss and Britten through to ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy. The Collegiate Chorus delighted everyone with a lovely arrangement of ‘What a Wonderful World’ and the gospel style of ‘Praise His Holy Name’. The newly formed Jazz Band provided great entertainment in many ‘different ways’ (Austin Powers) in their performances of ‘Hawaii-Five-O’ and ‘Soul Bossa Nova’.

A sense of calm was communicated in the Girls’ Choir’s performance of ‘Eternity’ by Michael Bojesen. An excellent array of soloists and a Brit Pop ensemble delighted the audience with performances which were both musically alert and stylish.

All in all, it was a great evening and many congratulations must go to all the pupils who represented the school so well.

Nativity Performances Congratulations to all the children who took part in the highly anticipated Christmas Prep School productions in Foundation, KS1 and KS2.

Our youngest performers are aged 3 and they all performed and behaved impeccably.

Who’s Your Mummy?

The KS2 end of year production was an action packed thriller called ‘Who’s Your Mummy?’

The musical comedy caper included pupils from Year 5 and 6 and discovered that history is never as dead and buried as you might think.

For the Year 6 cast, it was their last Prep School production and three shows were performed to a packed out audience.

Beyond the Syllabus Our teachers passion for their subject is evident both in and beyond the classroom Mr Doncaster Mr Steve Doncaster is a teacher of Art and Design where he has enjoyed a number of years teaching students at Hull Collegiate School. In addition to his teaching, Mr Doncaster is a sculptor; an exhibition of his recent table sculptures were displayed in the main foyer.

The majority of the sculptures in this exhibition were made in the autumn and winter of 2017/2018 at his studio in Hull, East Yorkshire. Of the eighteen pieces that he made, eleven were on display.

Mr Doncaster makes his sculptures by assembling pieces of card and wood in an improvisational way. His aim is to create a totally new object that has its own unique visual language.

He wanted to cut out the known beauty associated with sculpture and go back to the belief that a sculptor is a person who makes a physical mark. It needs to mean more than simply be a piece of aesthetic decoration; it has to be something that is made for a purpose. Their scale and use of the table top enables viewers to get close to their colour, shape, scale and form.

Mr Doncaster said: “I have always regarded sculpture as an entity. Sculpture is a thing which, in a way, we as sculptors serve and so we have to keep it alive. We keep it alive by challenging convention all of the time. A large part of my life is spent making art. It is something I have always loved to do. It pours out of me and so instead of fighting it I let it. Whether it amounts to anything is up to history and the viewer to decide in the end.”

Miss Kirkman Annie has been a part-time drama specialist at Hull Collegiate School for the past two years.

Aside from her Wednesday mornings spent teaching Year 9 drama at the school, Annie’s main focus is as a professional actor. Annie trained in Musical Theatre at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, London and graduated with First Class Honours in 2013. Since then, Annie has been treading the boards internationally with various companies and in a number of different art forms.

In 2015, Annie and a group of other local female theatremakers, including ex-Collegians Hannah Levy and Rachel

Barnes, founded She Productions, theatre company in residence at the East Riding Theatre. Their mission is to develop and produce vibrant original work driven by the northern female voice, alongside accessible and bespoke outreach programmes serving local communities. Since forming, the company has produced nine innovative shows including family musicals The StorytEllas, supported by Arts Council England and Alice’s Eggstravaganza in Wonderland, in collaboration with The White Rabbit Chocolate Shop.

2018 has proven an exciting and busy year for the Annie and She Productions. Most recently, Annie wrote and performed in Beverley Does Broadway: The Rebound at East Riding Theatre after its sell-out success three years ago. This August the team have been invited to bring their satirical comedy MissCast to the International Festival of Cabaret in Mexico City and they are currently rehearsing for as they are performing the show in Spanish!

She Productions’ most notable hit, to date, is their musical It’s Different for Girls, inspired by Hull’s very own 1960s girl band, Mandy & the Girlfriends. On meeting the original band members three years ago and discovering the parallels between She Productions and the group, this musical was born. With support from Arts Council England, the show premiered at East Riding Theatre in September 2017. The story follows five teenage girls from Hull battling to make their mark on the music industry. However, it’s soon clear the troops are more interested in the length of their skirts rather than their talent. If these girls want success they will have to bite their tongues and learn to live with it - ‘it’s a man’s world’.

Like many of Annie’s shows, educational drama-based workshops were run alongside It’s Different for Girls. These workshops focused on ‘Consent & Relationships’ and were delivered to seven local schools, including Hull Collegiate School.

Annie says, “For me, using drama skills to tackle difficult topics has proven to be an effective way to get students discussing and exploring subjects they might normally find overwhelming.

Drama is not just about ‘being an actor’, the exercises I use in my teaching at Hull Collegiate School, as well as workshops, are designed to build confidence, communication skills and social interaction. We all use drama in everyday life, in every job without really knowing it and my passion for teaching lies in being able to ensure students are building these skills from a young age.”

BBC School Report Each year, pupils can get involved in our school's partnership programme with the BBC. Every March, schools across the country are invited to prepare a news bulletin with stories which are of interest both to their local area and also with a more national appeal.

As well as BBC School report day, pupils have access all year round to The Tranby Times journalism club run by Mr Dawson.

The club develops the communication and analysis skills of each pupil.

This year’s bulletin includes: Suffragettes 100 years on, Advice from BBC Breakfast presenters on how to spot fake news, Canine Partners with dogs to help people with limited mobility, the school musical ‘Annie’, a local recording studio in Willerby which is celebrating its 50th year in the music business, a roundup of sports results and performance as well as getting to know Mrs Wilson, the new Headmistress.

Arts Enrichment Day In January, we were delighted to welcome students from Cottingham High School, Newland School for Girls and Beverley High School who joined our Year 9 students for an Arts Enrichment Day. During the course of the day, students took part in a life drawing session delivered by local artist Esther Cawley, a Q&A with actor Adrian Rawlins best known for playing Harry Potter’s father, a drama workshop with Simon Willmott an actor who played Eddie in Blood Brothers and toured internationally with Mamma Mia!, a media tutorial on film editing and a music workshop on the power of words and music.

Friends of HCS The Friends of Hull Collegiate School are a committee of parents and staff who organise social events and fundraising activities throughout the school year. Thank you to everyone who provided their support.

Guests enjoyed a five-course meal, live entertainment, auction and a raffle.

Christmas Fair

The weather was glorious and it was wonderful to see so many of the alumni community enjoy the day.

The fête raised over £5500.

Year 9 students experienced a taste of the arts with artist and actor workshops.

Guests to the Christmas Fair could purchase a tree, enjoy a mulled wine and shop with over 20 stalls selling high quality goods. The Prep School and Staff Choirs entertained guests and children were able to purchase gifts for their family and friends at Santa’s workshop. The day raised over £2100.

The largest project was the funding of a new Senior School gym and spinning studio. Both facilities are open to students in Year 10 and above for recreational use and for GCSE / A Level PE students.

Welcome to HCS

In January 2018, we welcomed a new Headmistress, Mrs Alex Wilson, who started her new life in East Yorkshire by taking part in a charity swim in the North Sea for Hornsea Inshore Rescue. The Journalists of the Tranby Times, a Senior School extra curricular club, interviewed Mrs Wilson after her first term at HCS.

Why did you want to work at this school?

I spent a long time working at my last school (North London Collegiate School) and I felt very ready for change; I knew I wanted to leave London and when this job was advertised, there was just something that really drew me to this school. I liked the location and I liked the fact the school is mixed because until I came here

I had only worked in a girls’ school so it was a new challenge for me and having had a visit here, it was just the warmth of the community. I wanted to be in a school where it was smaller than where I was so I can actually get to know people.

What are your aspirations for the school?

What I would like is for people out there to know how brilliant the school is because we know how amazing it is, and I think it is communicating that message.

I want us to be seen as the amazing school, and for us to be known as a school where everyone can be an individual and can achieve what they set out to achieve. That will be different for different people, so some people might want to become doctors, other people might want to do completely other things, but I want it to be a school where everybody can be who they want to be.

What aspects of the school are you impressed with?

I think the warmth of the community; the family feeling. What I’ve been really impressed with is how people are willing to say ‘hello’ and if I speak, people actually respond. And I think just the general enthusiasm that I’ve felt around the building – people seem to want to be here, and that’s a really nice feeling.

Top of The Bench In November, teams of four 13 to 16-year-olds competed for the Hull and East Riding Top of the Bench trophy, the annual school Chemistry competition aimed at fuelling curiosity and excitement about Chemistry.

Held at the University of Hull, HCS Students, Luca (Year 11), Trinity (Year 10), Joshua (Year 9) and Julia (Year 9) battled against 7 other schools to win the regional heat.

They undertook a quiz, which involved a series of tabletop challenges on the topic of general chemistry, followed by a hands-on chemistry practical test, held in the University’s teaching laboratories. This was the third time in 7 years that Hull Collegiate students have won the regional round, twice more than any other school in the area.

The National Competition held in March, unfortunately, was cancelled due to the weather conditions and could not be rearranged, so the school invited the students and their families to a celebratory lunch where they were awarded the regional trophy.

Dr Turner, Chemistry teacher who accompanied the students said, “Both Mrs Gibbs and I are extremely proud of the students. They demonstrated great will and determination to address various chemical tasks.

Their success was built on their sense of teamwork and collaboration coupled with their highly developed experimental skills.”

Art Show 2018 The end-of-year annual art show featured a wide array of artistic talents from students in a variety of mediums.

In June, every pupil in the Prep School had work on display alongside GCSE and A Level work. Art, Textiles, Photography, Food Technology and Design Technology work was on display.

We were delighted so many parents, students and staff were able to come and celebrate the achievements of our students.

Mrs Wallis, Head of Art & Technology said: “ It’s a pleasure to see the hard work of the students on display and being enjoyed by so many people, the students and staff have worked tirelessly to produce and display the work.”

In July, Year 8 students welcomed guests to an afternoon tea celebration held in the Baccarat Room. Each student had worked on various aspects of the event throughout the day to include catering, art and design technology.

The Safi Coffee Project Hull Collegiate School supports Great Lakes High School and its four feeder Primary schools in the Kanungu district of Uganda. It costs just £180 per year to pay for a child’s education. Safi coffee is an innovative way of raising these funds.

Our school community has sponsored 25 children since 2010.

Every two years we take a team of pupils and staff to teach and play in the schools and work in their community; a place where only 13% of people are educated to secondary level or beyond.

After witnessing pre-school children digging for food, the team was desperate to do more.

We have worked extremely hard to bring Safi Coffee to fruition since our visit in July 2015. The project involves importing coffee from the Kanungu district of Uganda and selling it in the UK, with every penny of profit from sales paying for children to attend school in Uganda. This is our most inspiring school project ever. The impact in Uganda and on our pupils and families in Hull is immeasurable.

Over the past three years, pupils and staff from Hull Collegiate School have sourced coffee beans, arranged transportation, secured a local company to store, roast, grind and package the

beans, designed the packaging, painted the logo, managed the website, social media, sales accounts and promotions.

Since our official launch in September 2017 Safi Coffee has grown from strength to strength.

The team has regular customers who between them buy approximately 100kg Safi Coffee every month. One of these is a London bank who will have spent enough money next year to sponsor a child for their whole school life. The NHS has started using Safi Coffee in one of their cafés and we have plans to increase this further over the next year.

Locally, our customers include Beverley Minster, a number of cafés and Larry’s Bar, a mobile Piaggio van who has a permanent site in Hull City Centre.

During secondary school I worked every weekend and holiday as a housemaid to pay for my school books and uniform. I saw my family for just 3 weeks of the year. My parents borrowed money to pay for school fees which I had to pay back when I had finished. “

Within the past year the number of children sponsored has grown to 60 through Safi Coffee sales and promotions. This has made a massive difference to families in an area where otherwise, they would be forced to work on the land and scavenge for food.

The team’s aim is to increase Safi Coffee sales by reaching out to more businesses, a highly achievable target given the response we have had so far. This is just the beginning.

Pam Niwasasira Pam is Ugandan and was an appointed guide to Team Uganda 2015 and 2017. We have kept in touch since then and she visited the UK in the summer of 2018 where she stayed with Head of Drama, Andrea Asbury (Andrea led the 2017 visit).

Pam spent 2 weeks at Hull Collegiate School comparing the difference between the UK and Uganda.

Community Both community and charity work play a major role in school life of Hull Collegiate. Students and staff volunteer their time to benefit the school or the wider community. £10 Challenge The annual £10 challenge provides students with a highly entrepreneurial way to develop skills as they make as much money as they can from £10.

Working in their form, this year saw students provide a range of services from car washing and penalty shoot outs to the highly profitable tuck shops.

Congratulations to 13JB who raised an incredible £222 in the four-week time frame.

Wine Tasting In February, we welcomed 59 guests for our annual wine tasting event. The evening was filled with entertainment

and laughter. An impressive selection of wines was presented by Stuart Shenton from House of Townend.

Several dogs from the East Yorkshire branch of Jerry Green Dog Rescue were welcomed into school towards the end of the Lent Term.

A whole school non-uniform day helped raise £550 for the charity, during a great day for both the dogs and the students.

Students and staff raised an incredible £748 for Tommy’s through bun sales, stationery sales and a non-uniform day.

They also collected nappies in newborn/ premature baby size, cotton buds, nappy

Contact The Elderly In December 2017, we welcomed our first group of elderly residents to a monthly tea party organised by the charity Contact The Elderly. The group meet monthly and are brought into school by volunteer drivers to enjoy company and entertainment.

Macmillan Coffee Morning The Class Reps hosted their annual Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Welcoming parents and staff to the event, they raised over £900.

Trust, a charity which provides real hair wigs free of charge for those who have sadly lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other illnesses.

They chose Candlelighters after the charity supported a pupil, Hope Rooms, and her family. Hope’s inspiring attitude towards her illness led to her being named the Hull Daily Mail’s Pride of East Yorkshire in 2014 and in 2015 she won the United Learning’s Young Hero Award.

Sadly, Hope passed away in 2016 but Candlelighters continue to support her family and the team have continued their fundraising in her memory.

Change the World United Learning launched the Student Leadership Programme in September 2015, in partnership with Free the Children and Diana Award.

Each year, the Prep School Council take part in the programme and are invited to a one-day Student Leadership Conference, followed by a project at their own schools, where they will work with their classmates to encourage engagement with social action and empower them to be leaders of change in their own lives.

This year, Hull Collegiate School pupils chose the topic of elderly care and dementia. Working alongside staff at Beverley Parklands Care Home and Dementia UK they carefully crafted an events plan to raise awareness and funds to purchase call blockers.

A forget-me-not flower was filled with coins in the main foyer. In total pupils raised ÂŁ1059.

The main event involved an afternoon tea dance for the residents of Beverley Parklands. Pupils travelled to Manchester to present their project and outcomes to the United Learning student leadership team.

An artwork display of Forget Me Not Flowers was hosted at Hull Collegiate School for Dementia UK. The artwork was circulated to schools and community places, raising awareness of the charity.

“As captain of the hockey first team, I had a leadership role that rewarded my determination and persistence in the sport through seeing my team succeed. Being a team member since Year 11, I had seen plenty of players join and leave the team, and as captain two years later this was a challenge as many of the younger girls had not interacted with some of the older players before. However, it was intensely rewarding to see both the new and old players working together after a few games. During my time at Hull Collegiate, hockey was both a sporting and social activity which made my position as captain all the more enjoyable. I’m glad that I took the opportunity to play hockey at school, as I look back on my school years it was definitely one of my happiest memories; getting to socialise with new people whilst playing the sport that I love.”

Not only was it great to play with new year groups, but it also provided the perfect escape from my A level studies. I remember the fantastic teamwork and camaraderie displayed, even when a match wouldn’t go our way the team never failed to motivate each other. I particularly remember the first team versus staff match towards the end of the season, it was great fun and showed how much the team had improved throughout the season. The opportunity to play competitively in a match at least once a week was something I always looked forward to and allowed us to put our work into practice. Both the teamwork and communication skills I have gained from being netball captain this year will stay with me for a long time and undoubtedly help even after I leave school.”

Rugby One of the most worthwhile and rewarding element of being 1st XV Rugby captain was watching the team develop as a community immediately from our first game seeing an impressive win over the Old Boys. This winning mentality was ongoing throughout our season due to the strong commitment from the boys within the team and the support of our experienced coaching staff.

The team was a place where players were given the opportunity to develop not only their own skills, but also to have a positive impact on those around them.

The spirit of representing one’s school stuck with the squad throughout our season and allowed for us to forge new friendships across the whole school community. It is this positive atmosphere within all the sport I have experienced at Hull Collegiate, that makes having the opportunity to have an impact, in the role of 1st XV Captain, one of the most rewarding elements I experienced in my time at school, and a memory which I am grateful for.

Andrew, 1st team rugby captain Football Being captain was a great experience in my last year at Hull Collegiate. We played some fantastic matches, beginning with an impressive victory over the formidable Old Collegians and continuing with more impressive football, including a hard-earned win over a strong Woodhouse Grove towards the end of the season that saw the boys rally together after half time to get the win.

As captain, it was great to see the sense of community that developed between the players both on and off the pitch, and sharing the success of each match with them was a truly unforgettable experience that enhanced my time at Hull Collegiate. It was great to represent my school alongside my friends whilst playing a sport that I loved. Having the chance to be a captain this year was just one of the many reasons why I have enjoyed the sport at Hull Collegiate and it will be an aspect of school life that I will definitely miss as I go on to university.

Our Senior School Prize Giving keynote speaker in July 2018 was Anthony Bennett.

He was told he would be on 20 tablets a day, long term...Anthony disagreed. Within a year her was taken off all medication.

In February, former Olympian Richard Buck spent the day at Hull Collegiate School. Richard led two assemblies where he talked about his achievements and how sport gave him something to focus on.

After returning from a school trip to Disneyland Paris in 2006, Anthony fell ill with what he thought was a cold. Within two days Anthony was unable to make sense of anything he said and was rushed to his local hospital, where he was diagnosed with Streph-Pneumonia, Influenza and Staphylococcus at the same time, which left him with just 10% chance of survival.

Anthony was transferred to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and placed on an ECMO life support machine for 3 weeks.

During this time, his white blood cells reduced to zero, he had a seizure whilst in a coma and needed to be brought back to life 12 times during his 7 week stay in hospital.

In order for Anthony to recover, he needed to learn the very basics all over again. How to breathe without the aid of machines, handeye coordination, sitting, standing straight, walking again and re-training

After making a full recovery Anthony supported GOSH Children’s Charity by pitching for a £7.5m partnership with Whitbread PLC. The partnership was won and he was approached by two Exec Directors, asking if he would join Whitbread and help engage with 20,000 team members to help raise £7.5m. Within 4 years of the 5 year partnership, £8.5m was raised for the charity, with the money going towards the ‘Premier Inn Clinical Building’, a new wing at the hospital to help treat up to 20% more patients.

Musharaf Asghar Musharaf Asghar won the nation’s hearts of Educating Yorkshire six years ago and in July was invited as guest speaker to the Key Stage 2 Prize Giving.

Now 22 years old, Mushy spoke to parents, staff and pupils about how hard work and taking risks can bring success in life.

He learned he was very good at sport and by putting the effort in, he improved even further. Richard’s message to the pupils was very inspiring. He explained that through sport he learned he had the power to control his destiny, it has given him confidence and focus. In addition to this Richard has made some fabulous friends, travelled the world and has had a lot of fun!

Richard ran a series of sports workshops for pupils in Years 5 - 8.

This was a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to meet and work with a professional sports athlete and learn new training skills. This was a massive motivation for all our pupils.

Old Collegians Old Collegian Stars in Hollywood Blockbuster JOHN-KAMEN, Hannah (HCS) starred in Ant-Man and The Wasp. Released in August 2018, Hannah was cast as ‘Ghost’ the lead villain in the Marvel film and starred alongside Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd.

Connexin won the Smart City Development of the Year Award Hull-based tech firm Connexin has won a prestigious award for its futuristic transformation of a street in Newcastle.

The business, launched by Hull Collegiate alumni Furqan Alamgir and Alex Yeung in 2006, provided visitors to the north east city with a glimpse into the future last summer, as it showcased the potential of smart cities.

The technology, trialled in Mosley Street in Newcastle, has a range of features – including helping drivers find parking spaces, monitoring traffic levels, analysing air pollution levels and even showing when rubbish bins are full and need emptying.

Connexin fought off stiff competition last week to win Smart City Deployment of the Year at the Internet of Things Breakthrough Awards.

Pride Hull TRAIN, Andrew, was prominent in organising the Pride event in Hull Andy was also listed in Hull Daily Mail’s Hull Power List 2018 - the 45 most influential people in the city.

RAF Commemorations SUMMERS, Joseph, known as Mutt Summers was mentioned during the BBC programme commemorating the RAF’s 100 years. He was at HGS in the 1920s and joined the RAF in 1924.

He became a test pilot and worked for Vickers becoming the first pilot to fly the Spitfire. He was also involved the preparations for the Dambusters raid.

BUSH, Sydney (90) died in Spain in December 2018 NAYLOR, Peter (84) died in December 2018 Old Collegians Football Tour The Old Collegians FC enjoyed their annual football tour, this year to Berlin, over the August 2018 Bank Holiday weekend. Their four-day stay included two matches. The first, against THC Franzikaner FC (on a 3G pitch 50 feet in the air on the top of a supermarket) resulted in a 6-1 victory, with a star performance from Charles Summerfield and a (disputed) hat-trick from newcomer George Seville. Their second game, against SV Nord Wedding, found them in the lead at a canter; then two games in two days and a night out began to take their toll on tired legs and the game finished 2-2.

Somewhere in between the matches they managed to see Der Reichstag, Der Brandenburger Tor, Der Hauptbahnhof, a Bundesliga match between Hertha Berlin and FC Nürnberg, at the Olympic Stadium, and the inside of several night clubs.

Old Collegians Careers in Finance Old Collegian Nick Grimwood visited school to talk with students about his career since leaving Hull Collegiate School in 2013. Nick joined Barclays on their degree programme which allowed him to study a sponsored degree, as well as work in various roles in the Retail Bank.

This culminated in managing Central London branches, including Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

Nick is now based at Canary Wharf and works in the international private bank of Barclays.

Nick spoke with pupils in years 10-12 at the breakfast meeting and presented at the senior assembly

Careers in Linguistics Old Collegian and former Head Boy, Rajan Kapur, returned to the Senior School to speak to Year 10 and 11 students during assembly time to promote the merits of studying a foreign language.

His study of Spanish and Portuguese at Christ Church Oxford (entry September 2013) has taken him to Spain and South America and he talked about his experiences and Higher Education life in general.

Rajan is an Operations Development Analyst for City Football Group, a holdings company that oversees Manchester City, New York City, Melbourne City, Yokohama, Club AtlĂŠtico Torque and Girona C.F.

Indian Music Workshop

In January, some of our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a workshop on Indian classical music with expupil Anita Datta.

The workshop covered ways of playing different Indian ragas on the sitar and rhythms on the tabla drums. It ended with all the pupils performing their own Indian compositions with Anita.

Focus on Languages In January, Year 9 pupils took part in the school’s annual Languages Day. The pupils were involved in activities including Italian, a Euro quiz, a fact-finding treasure hunt and a flag competition. They learned about Hebrew from Mr Beardsley, growing up in an international school in Italy from Mrs Bloomfield and Japanese culture from Mrs Smith. Pupils and staff also had fun in the language themed photo booth.

In March, Year 10 pupils from our school joined with pupils from Beverley High School, Longcroft School, Beverley Grammar School,

Kelvin Hall School and Hessle High School to listen to representatives from the private and public sector presenting on how foreign languages are essential tools in the world of work.

GCHQ, a government intelligence agency employing over 6,000 people from diverse backgrounds which aims to keep our country safe and secure by working with the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and MI5, were the first to speak. They provided a fascinating insight into the role of GCHQ and the specific responsibilities of language analysts within the

organisation, and then followed with specific taster sessions in Russian and Arabic.

Smith and Nephew, a massive local organisation which supports healthcare professionals in more than 100 countries, employing 16,000 employees around the world and with an annual income sales in 2017 of almost 4.8 billion dollars, delivered an interesting session on the history and development of the company, its need for language professionals given its significant international interests, and how to make yourself more marketable in

terms of employment, bringing in some products with multi-lingual descriptions for pupils to examine.

Finally, Siemens Gamesa, a leading international name in the renewable energy industry which is investing large scale in Hull, also contributed to the day with a presentation on the company and a quiz identifying countries and languages related to their international contacts and business interests.

Cross-curricular links to technology, business and marketing gave the day a generic flavour too and made it

relevant to all, whether it be pupils seriously looking at specialising in languages as a career in the future or pupils looking at languages as a valuable addition to other possible careers.

Educational Visits Forest School

Hull Truck Theatre

Pupils in Reception, Year 2 and Year 4 for a number of years have enjoyed termly visits to Forest School. This year, at the request of pupils, Year 6 have also enjoyed full days spent at Humberdale Forest School, Meaux.

Pupils in Years 3 to 6 enjoyed this new version of Julius Caesar by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The perfect introduction to Shakespeare for 7 to 13-year-olds.

York Chocolate Story Year 2 enjoyed a guided tour of York’s award winning visitor attraction before having a go at making their own chocolate delights in the workshop ‘Adventures in the Chocolate Factory’.

Life as a Roman Soldier Pupils experienced what life as a Roman Soldier entailed at Murton Park.

Equipped with their uniform, helmet, spear and shield, the young recruits were put through their paces learning how a fort is built and laid out.

Robinwood Residential

Living Life on the Homefront

Robinwood was a great experience for Year 6 - it was a two-night residential with lots of different activities to do.

The staff there are fantastic; they will solve any problem, no matter how big or small. Our leader, Matt, was brilliant – he would always make sure everyone knew what they were doing and no one was left behind.

Year 6 pupils arrived as evacuees at Murton Park where they were greeted by the evacuation coordinator from the local branch of the WVS. During the day they carried out a range of activities including baking on a ration and ‘makedo-and-mend’ tasks. They found out how much work was involved on wash day! They also learned from the local ARP warden the dos and don’ts of air raid precautions, gas mask drill and how

The days were crammed with activities - every day we would do around five to six. All of them were great and we were all involved in each one. Most activities involved teamwork in some kind of way. All of the activities were great, especially the piranha pool. The piranha pool was an escape room and you only had 45 minutes, but we made it with 5 seconds to go. The other activities involved height, water or tight spaces…

This engaging adaptation was 90 minutes long, used Shakespeare’s original language and asked the audiences to participate in the story.

All the food there was amazing, but my favourite was the breakfast because you would get tiny waffles with your full English – they were so tasty!

Etihad Stadium GCSE Science Live Year 7 had a fantastic trip to Manchester where they enjoyed a tour of the Etihad Stadium including the new Tunnel Bar and the amazing new changing rooms for the Manchester City players. The area known as Sport City has been changed beyond recognition in the past 10 years. Like many parts of Manchester, it contained factories, mills and warehouses built 200 years ago when the city was an important industrial centre. Over the years, especially since the 1960s, the factories closed down,

GCSE Science Live at Leeds Town Hall provided students with the opportunity to see and hear from five of Britain’s top scientists, all working at the cutting edge of their specialisms.

The day showed students that science really does offer solutions for many of the world’s great problems.

by Mr Dawson and Mrs Bloomfield made its way to Edinburgh to see an incredible and emotional production of Tennessee Williams’ famous “A Streetcar Named Desire”. The trip was a fantastic chance for the students to get a first-hand experience of the play’s drama that couldn’t be expressed from just reading the text.

Impressive performances from Julia Taudevin and Billy Mac ensured that both teachers and students had a great time at the theatre.

Italian Adventure The Years 7 to 11 Classics trip to Italy saw students experiencing the historical treasures of Rome, the luxury of a Roman villa and a 900m steep walk to the top of a volcano We left the school at 2:15am and made our way to Manchester where we caught our flight to Rome’s Fiumicino airport. The weather confused us a little as we had left the rain and cold of Manchester only to find Rome in similar conditions!

Our coach in Italy drove us to the lovely Hotel Cervia where we dropped our bags off before being driven to the Vatican in the West of the city. Walking from Pope Francis’ residence, past Castel Sant’Angelo, we arrived at the T-Bone restaurant in Rome where we had booked in for lunch. This was a very popular choice and the staff looked after our group well with delicious healthy chicken or salmon wraps and Italian herb fries.

In the afternoon we continued our walk around Rome; our first stop was the always beautiful Piazza Navona where the Bernini Fountain of Four Rivers is situated. This sculpture depicts the four great rivers as shown on the four great continents of Renaissance cartography: The Nile in Africa, The Danube in Europe, The Ganges in Asia and The Rio de la Plata in the Americas. All of this culture meant we had to take time out for authentic Italian gelato!

We then moved on to the Pantheon, which was once a pagan temple - Pan meaning ‘all’ and theos meaning ‘gods’.

When Christianity was introduced to the Romans, the Pantheon became a Christian church. The alcoves in which the many statues of gods used to be are now empty, however the oculus (eye) in the roof remains. This was originally there to allow smoke to escape from the fire which was kept burning in the middle of the pagan temple. We went back to the hotel to unpack and freshen up before enjoying delicious three course meal at Tre Archi restaurant in the next street down from the hotel.

On our second day in Rome we awoke to a lovely continental breakfast before walking through the Parco del Colle Oppio past the Domus Aurea - Golden House - built by Emperor Nero after the city had been badly damaged by fire.

We chose to walk this way because at the end of the tree-lined path in the park, the Colosseum rises up on the horizon. Stopping off at the ticket office near the Colosseum, we bought our tickets to enter the Roman Forum first.

We saw the Palatine Hill museum, walked through the temple of the Vestals and saw where their fires were kept burning for years, before arriving at the tomb of Julius Caesar. As we headed for the exit we saw the monument to the Gemini twins - Castor and Pollux. We then headed north east towards the Trevi Fountain. The legend is that if you throw a coin in from your right hand over your left shoulder, you are guaranteed to return to Rome. As this was the sixth time on the trip for both Miss Groves and Mrs Palmer, there would appear to be some truth in that! Lunch was at the Hard Rock Cafe - a real treat. After lunch we headed back into Rome city centre to see the Colosseum in the early evening. It looked golden in the glow as the sun set lower, and you could feel the echoes of history in the walls and floors. Time to return to the hotel and reflect on a wonderful day in Italy’s capital city - The Eternal City.

After two nights in Rome we were collected by our coach to head south to the Bay of Naples. Along the way we stopped at Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli. This is more than simply a villa; it is a huge estate where the Emperor Hadrian escaped from the pressures of Rome. This is where his slaves and most trusted soldiers would have also lived and contains baths, a theatre, exercise areas and a beautiful dining hall near the canopus. From Tivoli we drove down the Amalfi coast to Mount Vesuvius. This volcano is currently active and an eruption is predicted within the next 20 years. However, we felt confident that seismic and volcanic activity were not going to happen while we were there.

Equipment these days can warn us of such events days before they actually occur. We were driven part of the way to the shopping area before walking the last 900 metres uphill to the summit. The walk was steep and on gravelly ground, so was not easy. We all made it to the top and got some spectacular pictures before descending again to do our all important souvenir shopping! Our hotel in Sorrento was a very picturesque family-run business and our rooms were delightful. Again, we enjoyed a three course meal for our dinner before a gentle evening stroll through the Piazza Lauro.

After spending our first night in the Hotel Savoia in Sorrento, we made our way to Pompeii. This town – frozen in time – is an amazing document of the past and there is so much to see. Beginning at the amphitheatre, we went on through the two theatres, several baths until we reached the Forum with its multitude of sites – temples, lawcourt, shops, more baths and a marketplace. Unfortunately, the house of Caecilius - who we study in the Year 7 and 8 textbooks - was down a street where further excavations were being done and therefore out of bounds. We enjoyed a very generous lunch at the Old West restaurant which was done out like a cowboy saloon from the Wild West!

These sit down lunches proved significantly more popular than the packed lunches we have had in the past. Moving on from Pompeii, we then visited Herculaneum. Unlike Pompeii which was preserved in ash, Herculaneum was preserved in the mudflow which occurred as a consequence of the eruption and tsunami that followed it. This meant that the colours of the mosaics and wall murals had been better preserved. We saw the skeletons of the bodies of residents who wrongly assumed they would be safe from the tragedy by hiding in the boathouses.

We had an earlier night to bed on Thursday as Miss Groves was waking everybody up at 05:30 am for the coach pick up at 06:15. This was not popular! However, we got through passport and security very efficiently at Naples airport which gave us free time to have one last Italian breakfast of cakes and pastries. Our flight landed on time at Luton airport and our coach was nice and prompt in picking us up to bring us back to Hull Collegiate School. The students’ behaviour was exceptional through the trip, and they were complimented in particular by the hotel in Rome for the manner in which they conducted themselves.

House Competitions Sports Days at Hull Collegiate School are a great way for students to compete in their favourite athletic events whilst earning points for their houses.

Spelling Bee

The sunny weather of the latest Senior Sports Day fostered a great sense of competition throughout the stadium as each house got into the competitive spirit. The 2018 winners were Johnson house with 1518 points, followed in order by Venn, Holtby and Marvell. Besides the team aspect of the day, incredible individual performances were also prevalent. Setting three new school records, and getting four individual wins, Henry C won Best Sportsman while Javeria K earned Best Sportswoman by winning the most individual events of any student on the day. However, Sports Day at Hull Collegiate could not be viewed as complete without the annual Staff v Student relay race which saw the teachers narrowly lose to their younger opposition. This summer’s Sport’s Day was a fantastic day of competition for students of every year group in the Senior School.

This year’s house spelling competition was another great show of skill amongst students throughout the school with even younger competitors in Year 7 and 8 being challenged with tricky words such as ‘convalesce’ and “effervescent”.

Holtby house managed to take victory with an impressive 400 points which left Marvell trailing in second with 300 points. Venn and Johnson took third and fourth place respectively with 200 and 100 points.

House Pantomimes This year saw the December house pantomimes occur in a brand-new venue located in Hull which greatly added to the atmosphere of each performance. As in previous years, each house managed to produce their own hilarious rendition of a classic fairy tale. This competition saw Holtby’s ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, Marvell’s take on ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, Johnson’s version of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and last, but certainly not least amusing was Venn’s production of ‘Shrek’. Each house was exceptional but it was

Holtby who emerged victorious after judging, followed by Johnson, Marvell and Venn house in second, third and fourth respectively. A new twist this year was the introduction of the Teacher’s Panto which was performed whilst the audience waited for the main results. The staff’s original story and guitar solo performed by our very own Mr Mishra was a breath of fresh air into one of Hull Collegiate’s fondest traditions.

Careers Career breakfast meeting, guest speakers and work experience opportunities allow students to explore a variety of career paths.

During their time at Hull Collegiate students are encouraged to pursue their goals of higher education and employment through careers guidance and PSHCE days in which students are exposed to many different professions and the paths in which to achieve them. Online resources such as Morrisby and KUDOS also help students to make informed, realistic goals towards employment after A levels. Mrs Mason, the school’s careers advisor works closely with the student body from Year 10 and onwards to ensure that each student is pursuing their ideal positions in the world of work or further education. This is achieved by one on one meetings between the students and Mrs Mason concerning their interests, current and projected grades, and goals for the future. Using this data, the school then organises a week of suitable work experience for any student who wishes to do so.

A shining example of the effectiveness of the school’s system can be seen in Olivia M who in her final year at Hull Collegiate realised that she wanted to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism. Not knowing much about the subject or industry, she met with Mrs Mason and discussed her options. This ultimately resulted in a tour of the BBC studios in Hull and Salford which further strengthened Olivia’s desire to make herself a part of the industry. Ms Mason went even further by arranging a meeting between Olivia and radio presenter, Kofi Smiles who was an invaluable mentor to Olivia. As a result of the work of Mrs Mason and Olivia’s own passion for the subject, she has now achieved a place at the University of Salford studying Broadcast Journalism.

Sixth Form Life In September 2018, Hull Collegiate welcomed two new Heads of Sixth Form, Mrs Robinson and Mr Windeatt. The Senior prefect team were also appointed for the new academic year.

What is different in this year’s Sixth Form when compared to previous years?

This year’s sixth form ethos has been centred on community and the personal development of all students. We have focused on making sure each student is happy in both their academic studies and school environment. Opportunity is the key to success and this is essential for all of our sixth formers to grow into the wonderful, independent young adults we know they are capable of being.

Does enrichment go beyond the academic improvement of each student?

At Hull Collegiate School we want to produce well rounded, kind students who are enthused and excited to take on the next stage in their education. With this in mind, the focus has been on developing life skills and opportunities that each student will take with them well beyond their time here at HCS. Enrichment has seen guest speakers and personal development plans take centre stage, as well as a jam-packed line up of support and volunteering opportunities to give our students the very best experiences we can.

How has the sense of community between both years of the Sixth Form been improved?

It has been wonderful to see the synergy between the year groups. With the introduction of societies, this has brought a real sense of community and togetherness that is vital for a happy, collaborative sixth form. The societies are a chance for like-minded students to put their heads together and enjoy activities outside of the classroom with a real drive on involvement and charity work.

Are there any plans to further improve the Sixth Form in the future?

Our enrichment programme is going to develop more and more over the next few years with the inclusion of potential trips and visits being incorporated and a further focus on personal development and societies.

I have been a member of the school community for 7 years now and wholly involved myself in life at Collegiate. One of my best times at the school was the sports tour to Sri Lanka as I got to compete whilst experiencing a completely different culture with my friends. Next summer will see the bi-annual Uganda trip in which I will be participating after finishing my A levels and it will be incredible to see the impact that our volunteering and fund raising has made on the children at Great Lakes.

Since First Steps, I’ve had many opportunities to pursue my passion for the Performing Arts at school. My favourite memories have been on the stage in the school’s various shows over the years. It was incredible taking on the role of Miss Hannigan in this year’s “Annie” production as such a spirited character. I am looking forward to using the communication skills and confidence instilled at school to aid in my future career as a teacher.

I have been at Hull Collegiate School since the beginning of my senior school education and have enjoyed every minute since I joined. For me, involvement with the school’s social and fundraising events was a great way to develop communication skills whilst contributing to the school community. Now as Head Prefect, I am at the heart of all things Collegiate in the sixth form. I will hopefully be able to implement these skills in a new setting at St Andrews University, studying History and Economics after leaving a school which holds many cherished memories.

I have only been at Hull Collegiate School for one year after transferring from Beverley High School, yet the school has treated me as if I had been enrolled here since the beginning of my education, especially with respect to the plethora of drama opportunities available. Like Lizzie, my favourite production has been “Annie” in which I played Grace. With the skills from my previous school that have flourished at Hull Collegiate, I hope to go on to get a Musical Theatre degree in my pursuit of performing on the West End. Leonora, Prefect

I joined the school at age 4, and since then I have constantly been a part of any team sport that I could whether it be football, cricket or doubles tennis. Sport at Hull Collegiate has always been a source of enjoyment for me and my fondest memories are often of the sporting trips and fixtures that the school hosts. After my A levels, I am eager to take on the challenge of university life as I believe that Hull Collegiate has given me the confidence through sport and being a prefect to thrive in this new environment.
