Welcome At Hull Collegiate, every aspect of school life complements the others, and it is precisely this rounded education which produces independent and confident young people with the drive to make the most of every opportunity and a desire to make a difference in the world. The academic heart of the school is characterised by the warm relationships between staff and students, which balance a careful blend of support and challenge. We are academically selective, but not narrowly so, and we place very great importance on the nurture and development of the talents of each individual student. This is not a school to force anyone into a mould, and we are very proud of that. Our size allows for small classes, but we are large enough to be able to offer a wide range of subjects and an impressive extra-curricular programme. It is an extraordinary school – we hope that you enjoy finding out about it, but we believe nothing can better a visit to get to know the students, staff, and school first-hand. We provide an ‘all through’ education from 3 to 18 years for both boys and girls. Pupils in the Prep and Senior Schools have a wealth of opportunity to work on collaborative projects which support the coherent educational journey we provide.
Parents are engaged with the learning process from the moment a child starts at Hull Collegiate School. Regular communication about progress and achievements, school news and access to teaching and support staff, provide an open communicative environment between school and home.
The school is fortunate to be situated in the beautiful and historic house and grounds of Tranby Croft. Ongoing financial investment ensures that facilities continue to expand and develop. Sports facilities are approved to Sports England standard and are accessible to the wider community. We also provide inspiring music, art and technology workspaces.
For students to perform the best they can at school, they must feel secure and happy in their environment. New students, irrespective of their entry point, are made to feel part of the school community from the moment they join the school through our ‘buddy system’. They will belong to a form group, a year group and a House.

We have a strong track record of enabling our students to gain entry to their first choice of university, but examination success is only part of the picture and passionate teachers inspire pupils with a love of their subject which goes beyond the examination syllabus.

Community & Spirit Students, staff and parents are very much a part of the local community, we are not exclusive to it. Students partake regularly in a variety of charitable activities on both a local and global scale, helping to raise funds and awareness for causes close to their hearts. Each year group has an appointed parent

Alongside academic excellence, considerably exceeding national and local averages, sits our wide programme of co-curricular opportunities which sees our pupils shine in many ways. The Prep School is a vibrant and lively school, with a talented staff team who ensure our pupils blossom academically, personally and socially. Pupils have access to subject specialist teachers and facilities in PE and Games, DT, Art, Science, ICT, Outdoor Learning and Music and benefit from using the school’s vast grounds. One of the most important differences is our small class sizes, meaning we can offer an enviable teacher child ratio and each child can benefit from a high level of attention during these formative years to bring out the best in them. The House structure is a key part of school life – whether pupils compete in a House spellathon or a TT Rock Stars final, they are proud of their history and flourish in their House ‘families’. Across each year sits a wide range of trips and residential visits from Year 3, particularly in STEM. A busy inter-school sporting calendar means that pupils are able to try many new sports.

When we made the decision to move our children to Hull Collegiate School we had no idea just how much they were going to love it. Being able to speak to your child’s teacher by person, is reassuring and we feel that the additional support provided outside of lessons has been invaluable in helping them to reach their potential. Sixth Form students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills as school prefects, lead the School Council and assist with coaching and mentoring across a variety of year groups, subjects and extra-curricular activities. They are also responsible for organising their own social events calendar. In addition, a programme of visiting speakers and trip opportunities are provided.

An average class sizes of 6 students per subject in the Sixth Form promotes pupil confidence which in turn enables active debate and discussion with peers and teachers. Alongside their chosen A Level studies, students also complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), a university style dissertation in a topic area of their choice.

We believe in sport for all, whether students are trying something new, playing in regular team fixtures or competing at county and international level. Our excellent facilities - indoor and outdoor - mean we can offer a wide variety of games and sports. Competitive sport begins in Year 3, applying the skills acquired during Key Stage 1. Students compete in rugby, hockey, football, netball, cricket, rounders, tennis and swimming at regional and national levels. Students have access to top level coaching alongside our highly experienced and dedicated Physical Education department. Students compete at many national venues such as the London Aquatic Centre, Alexandra Stadium and the National Tennis Centre. Additional sporting opportunities are available within the extra-curricular programme.

The love of art is evident throughout the Prep School with countless colourful and tactile works adorning the corridors as you pass through. With its own impressive art studio, pupils use a large range of mediums to produce their themed displays, culminating in an annual Art Exhibition which includes work from every pupil. The Technology department within the Senior School encompasses art, textiles, digital photography, design technology and food technology. The department is very well equipped and experienced staff are on hand to facilitate projects that are ambitious, individualistic and technically exciting. The annual Exhibition displays exam pieces from GCSE and A Level Art, Textiles, Photography and Design Technology pupils. All pupils are encouraged to be creative throughout their time at school with inter-house art and design competitions and themed days which bring together whole year groups to work on collaborative pieces.

The transformational power of performance and development of confidence are celebrated at Hull Collegiate School. The Drama department is vibrant and enthusiastic and led by industry professionals. Regular performance pieces by both the Prep and Senior Schools culminate in spectacular finales which bring together the talents of drama, technology, art and textiles students and staff; this provides ample opportunities for all students to be involved, both on and off the stage.

These have included Splendid Theatre Company, Kepow Company and Frantic Assembly. They have also enjoyed popular West End and touring shows where alumni have been cast in lead roles.

Music is at the heart of life in Hull Collegiate School. With around three hundred peripatetic lessons each week, as well as five choirs and numerous instrumental groups rehearsing, not a moment goes by without the sound of music drifting through the school. We aim for music to be a central and positively life changing part of every pupil’s experience and peripatetic music lessons in almost every study are available from Year 3. Academic rigour is combined with a vibrant extra-curricular programme. There are five choirs, an orchestra, wind band, string orchestra and various chamber ensembles, such as a guitar group, piano trio and string quartet, all trained by specialist instrumental staff. Theory and aural training clubs also run weekly.

Many pupils are members of local and national youth orchestras; our pupils frequently dominate the trophy winners at local music festivals. Concerts take place throughout the year in large venues such as Beverley Minster, Hull Minster and Hull City Hall. Every two years the Music and Drama departments collaborate on a fully staged musical accompanied by a band of pupil and staff performers, with recent shows being The Sound of Music and Annie!

Our extra-curricular activity programme has been carefully designed to allow our students to develop confidence, find their niche and pursue activities beyond the classroom. The school offers a large range of activities during lunchtimes and after school from Reception through to Sixth Form. There is something to accommodate all abilities and interests. Prep School pupils take part in activities including dance, judo, sport, music, art, computing and languages. Members of the Chess Club, who are regularly successful in regional and national competitions, introduce the game to younger pupils.

This school is great because of the multiple activities you can choose every term, such as Futsal, yoga and photography.
Pupils in the Senior School can choose from over 70 activities each term that encompass sport, music, charity work, community involvement, art and science. Our successful Duke of Edinburgh and Young Enterprise programmes offer pupils further opportunities to achieve outside of their academic studies. Students are welcome to join the HCS equestrian team from the age of 8 years and upwards. The team is run by a fully qualified instructor and parents. HCS is a registered member of the NSEA (National School Equestrian Association). Students compete at various equestrian disciplines – Showjumping, Dressage and Eventing at prestigious inter-school equestrian competitions throughout the country. Sixth Form students support the extracurricular programme further by providing new activities to younger pupils in both the Prep and Senior School.

What makes a Collegian? Hull Collegiate School provided me with opportunities for teamwork and leadership. These were developed throughout my time in the sports teams, in my role as deputy head girl and through Duke of Edinburgh and other extra-curricular activities. Volunteering opportunities such as visiting Ganton special needs school and mentoring younger pupils in maths improved my communication skills. All these qualities have helped me get an optimum start in university life. The variety of activities and strong pupil-teacher relationships encouraged a good work ethic. In combination with the work ethic was the friendly atmosphere, which made my studies during GCSEs and A levels more manageable.

I cannot express how grateful I am to have attended Hull Collegiate School. The school allowed me to thrive in my academic work due to the warm atmosphere and dedicated teachers who guided me through my studies. Hull Collegiate school provided a wonderfully supportive atmosphere in which I developed lasting friendships and discovered my passion for the subjects I now study at university. Parking is available on the school grounds and parents are able to drop off and pick up children in designated zones supervised by staff.
