LIVING HOUSE MULLET HOUSE

A house that celebrates what it means to grow up in Australia, not looking at stereotypical vernacular typologies such as the tin shed, but looking at how a house can frame the everyday items of Australian suburbia, whilst simultaneously linking form and materiality to its existing surroundings.

A house that evokes childhood memories and acts as a catalyst for new experiences and moments. A serious house and a funhouse. A house of permanence and a house of impermanence.

The clientele for the project were a young family with 1 child as well as grandparents moving from the outer suburbs into the innercity suburb of Carlton. The Mullet house draws on themes of Australian suburbia, place making and memories. It looks at celebrating the Australian suburban lifestyle instead of denouncing it. The program of the house is centred around a courtyard typology allowing for indoor outdoor connection on such a narrow block. The Building takes inspiration from its surrounding context looking at the Victorian heritage and traditional forms and materials and implementing it in a new context. It is a house that can adapt to its clientèle , as well as age gracefully into its surrounding context.
