Unit F THE TALES OF BORNEO

INTRODUCTION

The tales of Borneo investigates the lives of Sea Nomads and the Archeological Heritage of the prehistoric site along the southeastern coast of Sabah. The captivating wonders and alluring scenery of Semporna, its rich cultural heritage, traditions, customs and ethnic diversity reinforce Semporna City as a unique microcosm of society. There’s 3 predetermined theme or elements for us to test our design hypothesis. (Theme 1: Anthropocene ocean/ Theme 2: Socio culture and community empowerment/ Theme 3: Architecture of Earth and Materiality) Cutting through outstanding topographical feature of Sabah, the studio selectively picked the Sea Gypsy Village of Kampung Bangau-bangau for us to select our proposed proving ground.

I choosen theme 2 as the main theme for my whole project. The Bajau Laut or ‘sea nomads’ ethnic community of Semporna are mostly boat dwellers (living in houseboats / stilt hut) that are dependent on the sea resources for their livelihoods.

They make a living through sea- based activities( traditional fishing, pearl farming and seaweed farming) while bajau darat communities who settled on land, are skillful wood artisans, mat- makers, boat builders and producers of tortoiseshell ornaments. Despite the rich customs and traditions, the plight of the Bajau Laut people has remain immutable. Their stateless status is the main contributor to the multi ple setbacks faced througout the years in term of social deprvation, education underachievement, limited rights to medical healthcare, lack of job opportunities that eventually lead to criminal activiies, including inhalant abuse and drug trafficking.

Borneo Borneo, island in the extreme southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean. It is the third largest island in the world, surpassed in size by only Greenland and New Guinea. Borneo is within Malaysia, the Northern region is divided into Sabah and Sarawak, with Brunei smack between the two, and Kalimantan in the East, below Indonesia.

Semporna Semporna is a small fishing village on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia which is surrounded by ocean, with attached islands that are as beautiful as a dream world. In this gorgeous island, there are plenty amazing culture heritages. For instance, they still remain the pottery making techniques, mat making skills and not to forget, the traditional boat making process.

The main economic factor in Semporna is came from the fishing industry. However, to maximize the income, the local started to use fishbombing and other modern technique that caused negative impact on the marine life. As time unfold, overfishing become a vast issue and it harms the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.

Coral Triangle The Coral Triangle is a roughly triangular area of the tropical marine waters of Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Phili ppines, Solomon Islands and Timor-Leste that contain at least 500 species of reef-building corals in each ecoregion.

The Coral Triangle is recognized as the global centre of marine biodiversity and a global priority for conservation. It is also called the “Amazon of the seas”.

Bajau Laut The bajau laut people are sea gypsies. Due to their nomadic life and do not have proper documents to testify their identities, they are in stateless position and could not gain the benefits of the citizenshi ps. For instance, healthcare, education, job opportunity and welfare. These are the proceeding problems that the Bajau community could face owing to their stateless dire strait. Education become a tremendous issue that happened in the Bajau community. They are not undergo formal education so their knowledge of health and hgene. Besides, the living spaces of Bajau laut people are also in a poor condition because they have no adequate money to buy the amentities.

Political issue and the stateless Bajau

1970 Since the late sixties, the Mindanao civil war resulting the refugee to flood into Sabah, including Bajau Laut Sabah recorded a 390% increase in population from 1970 to 2010(“Population Growth”,2012).

There’s lots of temporary pass issue to the refugee like IMM13, Surat Burung-Burung and Census Certificate.

1980-1990 The project IC, it is claimed, “systematically” granted citizenshi p to tens of thousands of illegal immigrants from the Phili ppines and Indonesia for political purposes.

2012 RCI formed to resolve the concerned about illegal immigrant but the report is inconclusive which leave the Sabah people feel that their state is full of unlawful citizen.

2013 Feb 2013 Royal Sulu Army made an intrusion into a remote village on eastern coast of Sabah, Kampung Tanduo. Unlike previous piratetype intrusions from the southern Phili ppines into Sabah, this one was clearly a political act.

Current Some of the Bajau Laut are undocumented/ illegal immigration. Certain village officials, however, in places like the traditional Bajau Laut village of Bangau Bangau seem to be following their own conscience with regards to whom they perceive to be legitimate residents. This situation makes the Bajau village especially the younger generation unable to enjoy the privillage and these lead them to more issue like lack of personal hygiene knowledge , drug abuse, child marriage and adolescent pregnancy.

Kampung Bangau- Bangau Kampung Bangau- bangau is one of the village in Semporna, Sabah. It’s one of the squatters settlement on sea which consist mostly Bajau Laut people living on stilt houses. There are limited land in Kampung Bangau Bangau and most of the houses are built on stilt at the low tight sea.

Unlike the normal village with proper car access, Kampung Bangau-Bangau is linked with bridges.

The spatial arrangment was like different group of clusters. There’s also a mangrove swampland right beside the stilt houses.

New tuorist Jetty is where the carpark is. It is also where the car can finally accessed. In order to enter the village, you have to walk or by boat. The main access is via a long bridge walkway. Along the long main access , you may notice there’s a land is bare.

It is due to as there’s a fire few years ago which burnt up that area’s houses.

This cartography is about the materiality that exist in the land of Semporna, cultural infrastructure in semporna and the social activities of bajau laut communities focusing on Kampung Bangau-Bangau, one of the village of the bajau laut in Semporna.

Future

The land of Semporna is rich of materiality like the pottery from Bukit Tengkorak, timber for boat making. Besides, there’s an ethnic group called Bajau Laut, which they are living at the sea. They have very rich culture and special living skill. For example, the Regatta Festival, which they will decorate their boat for celebration.

They have good diving skill and fishing is their livelihood. There’s also a stable ecology system in the ocean which allowed them to live nomadically on the sea.

Even they have rich culture and skill, they still living with lots of complex issue due to their history the social political issue. Some of the Bajau Laut are stateless and under privilege. Their living condition is poor as the living facilities and infrastructure is incomplete. Most of the children couldn’t get to school which led them didn’t have the basic living knowledge. Besides, overcutting mangrove for benefits, blast fishing, trawler fishing, coral reefs acidification which lead the whole eco-system become unstable where will indirectly affect the livelihood of Bajau Laut.

The unstable social culture and ecosystem should be tackled. We should support and work hand in hand to preserve the culture of Bajau Laut and respect each other. Not only Bajau Laut, the unstable eco-system also need to be considered and handle well. Hopefully in the future, the complex issue could be simplified and the special culture and skill could be kept and remain.

The pyramid is the most stable form. It represents the richness of the local cultural heritage of Semporna, such as pottery, mats and shi pbuilding skills.

The pyramid also represents the balanced ecology of marine life in which humans and aquatic life maintain a relative balance

The wire mesh is to show the complex issues facing by the Bajau Laut.

Their families structures are very messy. This is because the Bajau Laut people has a huge family which normally consists 7 children in a family.

However, each of them might contains different nationalities. And this lead to the stateless problem.

Due to these problems, the stable pyramid began to tilt and gradually became unstable. After understanding all the research, we think it is necessary to support all the unstable parts to strengthen it. In addition, the pyramid is inverted to preserve all culture. When you look down from the top, we will no longer see the problem.

The upper level shows the cartography of semporna, which included the cultural infrastructure, livelihoods, and the current status of the area. If you view from the top part, you will notice that all thw cultural heritage in on the inverted triangle as if they had been kept into it. This is to show that the cultural heritage had been protect and inherit by the local.

Formation of void Who creates the void? Man, from the real space, creating the boundary between real space which affected Bajau people who are living in the void between the real space.

The boundary in real space makes the Bajau’s nationality become complex. Some of them are stateless, yet, some of them are not, even they are in a same family.

Full of cultural infrastructures, people living in privillage. Do you ever notice the people living in the void between the real space? They possess amazing surviving skill, strong inheritance and rich in cultural.

Yet, they couldn’t enjoy the privillage like people in real space.

Happening in the void The gap between the real space, is not bare, yet , just lack of something. Clean water for drinking, clear water for living. Proper road in the void. Basic living and health knowledge especially for the children. A healthier living environment. Can these be supply to the void, just like how it’s supplying in the real space?

Children will play in the water, on boat or on stilt.

Ways of cooking, eating also differnet from us. They have fishing, woving , carving skill... From all the culture and analysis, I came out with some ideas ...

Design Process I did try out a few layout before finalising the massing. From a big radius,i try to make it more concentrate into a point. What didâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t change is the intention to have a waterway in between so that the building can approached by waterway and bridge.

Also, the centre part could become a gathering space on water/ on stilt at the same time As for form I did try different kind of roof like double pitched, round, curve... In the end i feel the pitched roof is more suite the site context and provide better ventilation

School for Bajau’s children Bajau children’s lifestyle are quite different from normal children. They are not used to the fixed classroomwith table and chairs, sitting still to learn.

Proposed the learning space of the school are more towards their living style, more like learning in the environment that they had used to .

I also place some structure around the main building radius as leading structure to lead them towards the learning space. The building designed to be open plan . The spatial arrangement for the classes are in leveling/ cluster, scatter in between Kampung BangauBangau.

Proposed program will be like tuition classes which is more focus on kids and teens of Kampung Bangau- bangau. Class on stilt Stilt is one of the characteristic of bajau cultural heritage. Providing some class on stilt so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s feel like learning at the space they area familar with. it is open plan and like a platform for learning.

Housing Units for Bajau Community As the burnt on 2015, many of them didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have house and is forced to stay at the temporary camp. proposed to rebuilt their home so that they can have a better living quality. Refering to the space planning of Bajau House boat and traditional house, proposed some housing layout for local and the staff as well. Some of the houses can become shoplots as it near to the public square.

The characteristic of traditional Bajau living space They start from living on boat. Normally will have a house boat (lepa/ bayanan) follow by a few small boat (Gubang/ boggo-boggo/ Tempel) As the need of water and fuel from land, some of them will stop by the land to get the daily needs. They started to build houses on stilt. The plan of the stilt house contaning a big main hall spaces follow by the small activity spaces attached around the main hall. Public Square A multi purpose space aim to boost the economy and act as a place for recreation at the same time.

Using one of the iconic element of their village, bridge as main element of the public square. The bridge is with multifunction attached with some services area.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a services hub attached with public toilet and storeroom. continue with a bridge with pocket seating connected to a floating platform at the outer area( near to the main access of boat) Pocket seating area allowed to have trading activities like weekend bazaar. During weekday, it was a place for recreational/ chit-chating.

Floating platform is like jetty for gathering especially the annual regetta festival. Also proposed pocket reading corner which could be place around Kampung Bangau-bangau

REFLECTION

The culture and way of living for Bajau people was really interesting. They posses different skill like diving, carving, woving...

There’s a lot’s of tales about them and I really enjoy reading their story and know them more. Besides’ throughout the works, I learnt some new skill like compiling a documentation, framing an artwork, model making. I would like to thanks to everyone who guide me along the way of my project.

4.3 Sustainable materials and construction The material choosen is sustainable and easily to get from local. (refer more specs at 3.0)

4.4 Indoor quality consideration As the site is near to sea, it is consider hot and humid. Proposed some features like the louvers to ensure ventilation. Woven all or the bamboo stri ps wall make the wall breathable. Also the bamboo stri ps ceiling to ensure better acoustic. These could avoid the use of mechanical ventilation like Air-conditioning and reduce the use of energy at the same time provide best ventilation for the building.

5.0 BUILDING SERVICES 5.1 Sewerage system As the site is on water, proposed to use a vacuum sewerage system. This system allowed the pi ped to be construct with min gradient as it is using vacuum. It needs a vacuum station to store the large pi ping and machine. Proposed to construct the pi ping underneath the bridge and linked to the vacuum station which are then to be connected to nearest sewer plant.

5.2 Water supply system The site could tap water from the land. But the proper pi ping system is needed to construct. Proposed to plan a proper inlet water supply for the village via the bridge, it could also be a boxing up for all the services pi ping to be store underneath the bridge .

5.3 Heating & Ventilation The proposed building are mostly natural ventilated. Proposed to use ceiling fan as mechanical ventilation to enhance the ventilation.

Damp and wet ceiling fan Due to the humidity and as the site is on sea, proposed the damp and wet ceiling fan which can have better weather resist.

5.4 Energy Consumption & artificial lighting strategy The proposed to use LED florescent light as general lighting for all the spaces as the building are mostly receiving daylight, it could served as supporting lighting whenever it is needed. Some task light are apply at the area like kitchen or study table at the resource room.
