Hello, Pinole neighbors! My name is Christy, and I’m excited to announce my candidacy for the Pinole City Council. As a proud first-generation Vietnamese American and daughter of refugees, my journey has been one of resilience and bravery, much like the meaning of my name, Truc Ngoc Lam, which translates to “Diamond in the Rough of the Forest.”
Growing up, I learned the importance of community and the power of kindness, compassion, and respect. These values have shaped my life and continue to drive my commitment to community advocacy. From my early experiences navigating social safety nets to funding my education through scholarships and hospitality work, I have always believed in the power of hard work and determination. I hold degrees in Business Administration, Marketing, Management, and Le Cordon Bleu certification.
While earning my business degree, I had my first unionizing opportunity, and I became the youngest shop steward for Unite HERE. During my time with Unite HERE, I collaborated with Teamster International to negotiate a $1 wage increase across the board and maintained health benefits for workers in Monterey, CA. I’m proud to be a union member. Union workers are the backbone of a healthy American system of fair wages, safe working conditions, and equal opportunities for all.
As a small business owner and chef, I have witnessed firsthand how food can bridge social, economic, and cultural divides. As a neurodiverse parent to an 8-yearold with neurodiversity, I have honed my adaptability, mindfulness, and active listening skills, which are crucial for effective leadership.
Since moving to Pinole in 2011 with my husband, Jim, we have been and continue to be deeply involved in our community. My roles as a former Community Service Commissioner and current Planning Commissioner have allowed me to engage effectively with residents and collaborate with civic organizations. I founded East Bay United Against Hate, in response to the aftermath caused by the pandemic. I served as a Union shop steward, former PTA President, Pinole Rotary Board Member, and Interact Advisor. As a Contra Costa Developmental Disabilities Council Board Member, and Contra Costa Women and Girls Commissioner, our mission is to improve the quality of life and advocate to enhance programs and services for marginalized communities. These opportunities have shown me that the system is flawed, but through advocacy and collaboration, we can drive meaningful change.
Addressing safety, housing, economic development, and climate change requires a comprehensive and interconnected approach. I aim to ensure that Pinole remains a safe and sustainable community by developing resources for our long-term needs and supporting our diverse community, including seniors and working families.
The time for political posturing is over. We need leaders ready to lift diverse voices and make informed, impactful decisions. I am committed to navigating complex issues with knowledge, skill, empathy, and effectiveness. I am asking for your vote to bring transformative civic engagement to Pinole.
Together, let’s build a brighter future for our community. Thank you for your support!

Best dental experience I’ve ever had. It is perfect for nervous patients. I’m happy to recommend this office to anyone. Magdalenag
I have had some less than stellar experiences with dentists in the past, so I was pretty apprehensive beginning my treatment with Dr. Lim. He was very friendly and informative, and during the treatment I didn’t feel a thing! No pain, no discomfort. What a relief! My fear of dentists is beginning to subside a little bit.
Very grateful to have such a great dentist. Dr Lim takes the time to answer your questions and personally follows up after you leave his office. When I had a dental emergency at night, he personally answered my call and made time for me the following morning. He also has a wonderful group of people working for him. Thank you Elena
Everyone, and I do mean everyone in the office is alert and professional. Dentists and Administrators and all assistants answer all your questions without hesitation. Dr. Lim has assembled a wonderful staff! I have referred another family already! Lynnel
Doctor Lim is an excellent dentist who is an expert in his craft. He is a very gentle dentist which pleases me the most. Doctor Lim is also surrounded by a great staff. Love the humor and smiles of all the assistants which kept me calm….Thanks to you all… Alicia

HELLO NEIGHBORS
AAs we transition into November, the crisp air and shorter days remind us that the holiday season is fast approaching. We celebrate a time for gratitude and reflection, with Thanksgiving bringing loved ones together around the dinner table. It’s also a time to honor those who have served in our military, with Veterans Day on the 11th, offering a chance to pay tribute to those who have sacrificed for our freedom. November, with its cozy evenings and sense of togetherness, serves as a reminder of the importance of community and the spirit of giving.
It's also a wonderful time to consider giving back to the community. There are many local nonprofits dedicated to serving those in need, and they greatly appreciate volunteers. See page 27 for local non-profits in the area. Donating your time to any of these groups—or others that align with your passions—not only helps support their missions but also fosters a stronger, more caring community.
This month we're proud to introduce you to four exceptional new sponsors: Evergreen Pet Clinic, where Dr. Rao and his friendly staff exude such a genuine love for animals that they treat each dog and cat like their own, at an affordable price too; the Elks Lodge Hall Rental, a hidden gem if you're looking for a terrific event venue with generous parking, central location and optional bar and catering; Mark A. Porter, CRPC(r), a wellrespected private wealth advisor with Ameriprise who takes a personal approach to each person's financial goals, and The Incurable Collector, a most delightful little Point Richmond shop with curated, interesting treasures and antiques.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Susie, Owner and Sales Manager

Headaches are NOT normal. Back pain is NOT normal. Numbness & tingling is NOT normal.
The human body can live five days without food and water, minutes without air, but without a nerve supply, life cannot exist. Nothing happens in your body without the involvement of the whole nervous system.
As a chiropractor I don’t treat the symptoms, rather I locate and correct the nerve interference which allows the body to do what it does best…heal itself. Chiropractic adjustments assist in the healing process by reestablishing the nerve flow to its optimal level. This allows the proper communication between the brain and the body.
Did you know a seven-year study showed that patients who saw a Chiropractor regularly experienced;
85% less pharmaceutical costs.
62% fewer surgeries
60% fewer hospital admissions
69% fewer days
85% fewer outpatient procedures

I couldn’t be happier with the experience of working with Sara!! She and her team were able to sold and closed the sale of my house in less than 30 days, which exceeded all my expectations. From the very beginning, Sara was professional, responsive, and highly knowledgeable about the market. She guided me through every step of the process with ease and confidence, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience, which was a big plus as I work in a very stressful environment. Her attention to detail and dedication made all the difference, and I would highly recommend Sara to anyone looking to buy or sell their home!

Alexandria at Victoria by the Bay
I cannot recommend Sara highly enough. She helped us put in a very competitive offer on the house at short notice and was tirelessly available throughout the whole evening while we negotiated the offer. Our purchase ended up having a few unexpected hiccups during closing and Sara was simply phenomenal, she was always on top of every step, making phone calls and emails to the right people to advocate for us and make sure closing happened in good time. At the same time, she got us hooked up with another lender who was ready to swoop in as a plan B... So if you want someone organized, proactive, careful, experienced, available and responsive, then choose Sara!
Happy Buyer: Ben W.

REAL ESTATE Ask
... Sara is one of the most knowledgeable and well-known realtors ...
Sara was an amazing East Bay Realtor for my family. She originally worked with my mother, who unexpectedly passed away early in the sales process. When she died, our family decided to pause the sale. Sara was incredibly patient and understanding throughout that period, so there was no question in our minds once we were ready to restart the process. We wanted Sara, the no. 1 agent in the area, to be our realtor! She was compassionate towards our needs and incredibly competent throughout the sale. It was evident why Sara is a top agent. In addition to facilitating normal activities, she connected us with qualified contractors to ready the home for maximum sell potential. In the end, we received a competitive offer for the home and completed the process smoothly. I would gladly work with Sara and her team again for my future real estate needs.
...We wanted Sara, the No. 1 agent in the area... Happy Seller: Ted A. Happy Seller: Candace J.
Giving Back in November: Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa
By Karen F. Walker
There's a powerful saying that resonates deeply with the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa: "Children are great imitators, so give them something great to imitate.” For 60 years, the Clubs have been doing exactly that—helping youth to reach their full potential.
With a mission to "enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens,” the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa currently serve more than 110 youth every day. Their programs provide a safe, engaging and enriching environment where children can learn, grow and thrive.
What Do the Clubs Offer?
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa offers a variety of programs to help youth discover their passions, gain valuable life skills and find joy in learning. Here are just a few of the ways they make an impact:
· After School Programs: The Clubs offer a wide variety of after-school activities, including basketball, media arts, garden
art, Chef’s Club, STEM programs, soccer, dance and specialized programs such as Passport to Manhood and Empowered Girls.
· Exciting Discoveries: In collaboration with New Leaf Collaborative, children at the Clubs learn the basics of rocket propulsion by creating "Stomp Rockets." Whether or not you know what a Stomp Rocket is, this opportunity sounds like a blast!
· Spread Joy This Holiday Season: The Clubs offer year-round fun, safe and enriching programs through their mini-clubs, where adult volunteers share their knowledge and experience with the children. Current offerings include a new Tumbling Program in the Sports Development mini-club, career exploration in the Career mini-club and hands-on art techniques through the Art mini-clubs, in partnership with New Leaf Collaborative.
Create Lasting Impact
"What I want people to remember most about our Clubs is that we provide experiences with a lasting impact on our members' lives,” says executive
director Jose Marquez. “Through another collaboration with New Leaf Collaborative and our Contra Costa Community Science Workshop (CCSW), members can explore hands-on learning in science and technology. Additionally, our partnership with Martinez Refining Company offers a Career Club that features a speaker series and interactive activities focused on workforce development."
A Safe Space for Growth
Marquez also emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment. "We are a safe space where members can grow, explore and be themselves,” underscores Marquez. “Not only are we providing a nurturing environment, we are also equipping our youth with the skills and experiences they need to be future-ready; preparing them for success in whatever paths they choose."
Lorna’s Journey: A Personal Story of Giving Back
Lorna Padia Markus, a long-time board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa, never imagined herself in that role when she first joined as a single mother years ago. At the time, she had enrolled her two young sons in sports programs at the Boys & Girls Club of El Sobrante. The safe, supportive environment allowed her boys to grow both athletically and also as young leaders with strong values.
“Both of my boys grew up within the Club, playing baseball, basketball and flag football,” Lorna says. “They later worked as staff, volunteered to coach and supported Club events.”
When Lorna was invited to join the board in 1996, she immediately accepted. Having seen her sons thrive and grow within the Club, she was eager to give back.
“Our mission is to help youth who need us the most,” Padia says. “Kids have
Photos provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Contra Costa.
the ambition and attributes to achieve anything they want. Our role is to provide them with the tools, expose them to possibilities and support them in their goals.”
Stories Across Generations
Lorna has witnessed countless success stories over her years with the Clubs. “One young woman, Frederica, was raised by her grandmother and went on to graduate from college. Today, she’s a leader in her profession,” Lorna shares proudly.
Another memory that stands out is a seed-to-table gardening program Lorna initiated. “We planted tower gardens and used the harvested produce to create healthy foods,” she recounts. “One young boy, Jerry, became so invested in the program that he would come in during his free time to tend to the plants, even when school was out!”
“I’ve seen tweener girls grow from being tough and full of attitude into young women holding jobs and looking forward to their future,” Lorna says. “The Club is a safe place where kids can learn, explore and grow into leaders. We provide life skills, technology training and workforce development.”
It’s ‘Fore’ the Kids!
Support for the Boys & Girls Clubs extends throughout the community. This October, Vern Glenn, sports anchor at KPIXTV CBS Bay Area, helped promote the Club’s 20th Annual “Golf Fore Kids’ Sake” Tournament. One of the event’s proud participants was Oakland A’s legend and Club alumnus Dave “Smoke” Stewart.
Additionally, the 7-Eleven Cares Foundation recently donated $5,000 in honor of the rock band Green Day, which has roots in Pinole, to support the Club’s Pinole and Martinez locations. This generous contribution helps the Club continue its mission of empowering and engaging youth through fun, characterbuilding activities.

WINTER SEASON PROJECTS
Winter is the perfect time to tackle home improvements that enhance comfort and efficiency. As temperatures drop, consider insulating your home to prevent heat loss and lower energy bills. Upgrading windows with energy-efficient models or adding weather stripping can significantly improve your home’s warmth.
This season is also ideal for indoor projects. Fresh paint or new flooring can revitalize your living space while providing a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, focus on maintenance tasks like servicing your heating system to ensure it operates efficiently when you need it most.
Don’t forget about safety; installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is crucial during the winter months when heating systems are in use. Finally, consider organizing your space, de cluttering rooms, and maximizing storage to create a more functional home environment. By planning these improvements now, you’ll enjoy a more comfortable, efficient, and welcoming home throughout the cold months ahead.
