Happy New Year!

No part of this publication may be reproduced without prior written permission from the publisher.

Hello Neighbors H appy New Year! January brings a fresh start, a clean slate, and a renewed sense of possibility. It’s the perfect time to reset, recharge, and ease into the year ahead. This month, our editorial focus is wellness — mind, body, and balance. From healthy habits to local resources, we’re starting the year with inspiration to help you feel your best! However you begin your year, we hope it’s filled with positivity, purpose, and progress.

This month, we are really excited to offer options for fun music events as well, thanks to Moon Coin Productions. Check out their ad for details on their upcoming Eagles show at Lesher Center for the Arts later this month! We would also like to welcome Mr. Tree Specialist, a family-owned small business with over 25 years of experience. Their group of arborists and technicians can help tackle a job of any size or complexity for all your tree needs.

It’s CRAB SEASON in the Bay Area, giving us crustacean-lovers a chance to feast! So, call your friends, grab your special butter warmers and bibs and get cracking! You’ll find some AMAZING local Crab Feeds in this issue— including at the Elks (hot crab, cooked on site), St. Joseph School (Western theme, auction & dancing), and Salesian (a two-day affair!). Don’t wait, look for these ads inside and make reservations already!!

Here’s to a bright January and a wonderful year ahead for us all!

From Holiday Hustle to Holiday Healing: Crafting a Sustainable Self-Care Plan in West Contra Costa County By Suzanna Mannion

T

he holiday season is in the rear view mirror and you get to return your focus to YOU! Take a cue from nature: like plants drawing energy deep into their roots for winter dormancy, January is your sacred time to turn inward. Shift your attention from giving to others to fortifying your own foundation. By embracing this period of rest for internal examination, you ensure the deep roots, health and resilience needed to sustain yourself (or even flourish!) throughout the year. THIS IS THE SEASON TO ASK YOURSELF: • What seeds of self-care do I want to plant right now? • What changes promote year-long well-being?

THE POWER OF INTENTION AND SMALL STEPS January’s “New Year, New You” rhetoric often pushes us toward unrealistic resolutions. Sustainable wellness is built on achievable micro-goals and practices like habit stacking — linking a new behavior to an established routine—not on deprivation or drastic change. One example that sets a positive, proactive tone for your entire day is implementing a daily micro-practice in the morning. When you reach for your phone first thing (inevitably met with dozens of texts, emails and notifications), you lose the power of presence, and it’s too easy to get swept into response mode. Instead, defend 3-5 minutes each morning to simply connect to your breath, stretch, or journal about the day’s intention. This puts you in the driver’s seat, affecting the trajectory of your morning, day, and ultimately, your life. Understandably, dedicating even five minutes for self-care can be a real struggle when babies, pets, partners, work and caregiver duties amount. Prioritizing self-care, no matter how small the effort, improves mood, focus and physical health. Bonus: When you take care of you, you show up more fully for those you care for.

KEEP IT SIMPLE: How to keep your New Year Resolution, for REAL this time By Karen F. Walker

Who doesn’t like a fresh start? And every January 1 we get a big, bold new calendar beginning. If you’re like me, you pick a motto for the year, maybe a Bible verse that strikes you, or a few words or ONE word (my go-to choice in recent years). You write it down and “realign” in early summer. If you’re like a good friend of mine, you say, “nah, why bother?!” That said, surveys show that way more than 50% of us make New Year Resolutions. Other surveys show that only a few keep those resolutions. So, here are 3 tips for finding yourself on the winning side…

Paver & Stone • Flagstone • Fences • Decks • Irrigations • Maintenance • Patios • Natural Grass • Synthetic Grass • Trees • Pruning • Retraining Walls

510.672.7257

magnogomez311@gmail.com

Instead of abandoning your new goal(s) as soon you mess up once or a few times, start out expecting hiccups along the way. Expect resistance. Anticipate the bumps in the road, and get resourceful about planning ahead to avoid them. Give yourself permission to adjust the new goal to better fit your abilities and time.

TRACK IT

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld (Seinfeld) often talks about how he grew from wanting to do comedy full time, to actually doing it. Of course, great comedians rely on great jokes, gags or stories, in addition to good delivery, timing and any necessary physical execution. But it starts with the jokes. SO… Seinfeld decided he would write ONE—at least one—joke every day. Every. Single. Day. I think he decided to do it for a year, but it was such a boon and became a habit so he kept it up.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Seinfeld was realistic. He told himself the daily joke did not have to be good. He knew he was likely to slack off, so he created what we now call a Habit Tracker. He kept is simple, just a grid with dates. He got a notebook and after writing down a joke, he checked off a square on his grid. After a week, he had 7 checked squares and more than 7 jokes.

GET REAL

After a month, he had 30 jokes… AND he had an unbroken 30 days of check marks on the grid, enough to make him not want to break the streak. Each week, the desire not to break his track record grew stronger than his inner resistance to take a day off. Even through challenging times, deadlines, illness, Seinfeld got resourceful and found a way to write a joke or story and check off that box for the day! Remember, it did not have to be a good joke or story.

Come on, five or 10 new goals. Really? I mean, honestly, how realistic is that?! Instead, start with just one. One New Resolution. Or, if that doesn’t put a smile on your face and relief in your heart, write down two or three goals, and then start with ONE goal first. YES, one new goal or habit can, and will, change your life. “Change happens when we consistently show up for ourselves,” says Dr. Colleen M. Fairbanks, a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in health and wellness. “Consistency doesn’t mean perfection.” 32 ccmarketplacemag.com
