Headaches are NOT normal. Back pain is NOT normal. Numbness & tingling is NOT normal.
The human body can live five days without food and water, minutes without air, but without a nerve supply, life cannot exist. Nothing happens in your body without the involvement of the whole nervous system.
As a chiropractor I don’t treat the symptoms, rather I locate and correct the nerve interference which allows the body to do what it does best…heal itself. Chiropractic adjustments assist in the healing process by reestablishing the nerve flow to its optimal level. This allows the proper communication between the brain and the body.
Did you know a seven-year study showed that patients who saw a Chiropractor regularly experienced;
85% less pharmaceutical costs.
62% fewer surgeries
60% fewer hospital admissions
69% fewer days in a hospital
85% fewer outpatient procedures

Best dental experience I’ve ever had. It is perfect for nervous patients. I’m happy to recommend this office to anyone. Magdalenag
I have had some less than stellar experiences with dentists in the past, so I was pretty apprehensive beginning my treatment with Dr. Lim. He was very friendly and informative, and during the treatment I didn’t feel a thing! No pain, no discomfort. What a relief! My fear of dentists is beginning to subside a little bit. Cristin G.
Very grateful to have such a great dentist. Dr Lim takes the time to answer your questions and personally follows up after you leave his office. When I had a dental emergency at night, he personally answered my call and made time for me the following morning. He also has a wonderful group of people working for him. Thank you Elena
Everyone, and I do mean everyone in the office is alert and professional. Dentists and Administrators and all assistants answer all your questions without hesitation. Dr. Lim has assembled a wonderful staff! I have referred another family already! Lynnel
Doctor Lim is an excellent dentist who is an expert in his craft. He is a very gentle dentist which pleases me the most. Doctor Lim is also surrounded by a great staff. Love the humor and smiles of all the assistants which kept me calm….Thanks to you all… Alicia

2025 Editorial Calendar
Hello Neighbors
Aswe look ahead to 2025, we’re thrilled to embark on a year of growth and expansion across Contra Costa County. We’re also delighted to welcome our new Art Director, Greg Steffen, to the team. Greg brings fresh, creative ideas to give our magazine a new look as we feature more engaging editorials and community-focused pieces. Stay-tuned as we continue to evolve and celebrate the vibrant communities in our area!
As we step into the new year, January presents us with an opportunity for renewal, reflection and fresh starts. After the holiday rush, we find ourselves standing at a crossroads—looking back on the year past, and forward to the possibilities of the one ahead. It’s the perfect time to reset our intentions, recharge our spirits and, for many, embrace the idea of “starting over” with a renewed focus on health, habits and well-being.
For some, this means taking on the challenge of Dry January—a month-long break from alcohol that has grown in popularity as a way to press “pause” on excess, reflect on drinking habits, and improve overall health. For others, it’s a time to explore creative pursuits, dive into
new projects, or simply find more balance in our everyday lives. Whatever your approach, January gives us a blank slate and the chance to set new intentions.
Inside, you’ll find content that resonates with the spirit of new beginnings— including creative mocktail recipes, tips for navigating Dry January, and other ways to recharge your body and mind.
Welcome to our newest sponsors: Los Cerros Mexican Grill in El Sobrante, rejoining us with wonderful new menu items—always fresh and delicioso! Don Adamson with Red Oak Realty, who brings a wealth of real estate expertise, knowledge and exceptional service to his clients and to us in his articles. And, the 60th ANNUAL Crab Feed at Salesian College Preparatory School in Richmond, January 17 and 18. BUY YOUR TICKET IMMEDIATELY! (NO tickets sold at the door). See their ad inside.
I hope this issue sparks a sense of possibility for you, whether you’re planning your next big project or enjoying the quiet moments of a slow start to the year. May January be a time of self-care, exploration and joy as we navigate the possibilities ahead.

SELF-CARE
FOR BUSY PEOPLE:
5-Minute Practices for Everyday
Does it ever seem to you that time flies and life passes at a dizzying pace?
Suddenly, you realize the holidays are “a wrap,” yet it seems like yesterday that you complained about summer heatwaves. You simply don’t know where the time has gone!
What you do know is that — you’re tired, and you can’t remember the last time you had a real break. You know, one where you weren’t boxed in by deadlines or pelted with constant “asks” coming from all different directions.
Between keeping up with work and personal obligations, the list of to-dos can seem to be never-ending, and it’s too easy to overlook— sometimes for months— that our personal needs aren’t being met. Overdoing without taking time to recharge will have us feeling fatigued, and if left unchecked, headed towards burnout. Let’s avoid reaching that breaking point and make self care a priority in 2025 by incorporating simple, quick self-care practices into our daily routines.
The Power of Simple Rituals
Luxury spa days and fine dining experiences are nice treats, however, these forms of self care are often impractical for most people with busy lives; a drain on both financial and time resources. What we need are bite-sized, nourishing moments that can fit into our days without disrupting our schedules. Even a five-minute practice can make a meaningful shift in your sense of wellbeing.
Quick Self-Care Practices to Try:
1. Breathing Exercises: Find a quiet spot, close your eyes and inhale for a count of four, hold for four, then exhale for six. Repeat for five cycles. This breathwork practice can reduce stress, ground you in the present moment and calm your nervous system. When our exhalations are longer than our inhalations, we may soothe our nervous system and evoke a calming sensation.
2. Gentle Stretching: A quick 5-minute stretch can work wonders. Queue up a few minutes of an online yoga class to move and stretch your body. Stretching improves circulation, releases tension and reinvigorates energy levels, giving us greater stamina to enjoy the important things in life.
3. Gratitude Journaling: Pause for a moment and jot down three things you’re grateful for. It could be as simple as your morning coffee, warm socks just out of the dryer or a kind word from a friend. A regular gratitude practice shifts your focus from challenges to areas of your life that you are grateful for. Bonus: enjoy a mood boost when you review past journal entries!
4. Mindful Moments: Set a timer for one minute and simply sit in stillness. Bring your awareness to your breath, the sounds around you, or how your body feels in the moment. This brief pause can create a sense of calm and clarity. Over time work up to two minutes, five minutes or more.
Why Prioritize Daily Rituals?
When you make space for even these brief moments of self-care, you’re signaling to yourself that you matter. It’s a commitment to your wellbeing that helps build resilience against stress.
Your Invitation
You deserve these moments. Take five minutes today to try one of these simple rituals. Tomorrow, try another. See what resonates with you and make it a habit. Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s essential. Which one will you try first? Give it a go, and see how even the smallest act of care can shift your entire day.
Tips:
Pair these practices with routines you already have. For instance, practice deep breathing before you start your car, do a quick stretch while waiting for your tea to steep, or keep a small notebook next to your bed for a nightly gratitude check-in. Try weaving these into your day and feel the difference!

DRY JANUARY
Originating in the UK in 2013, it was launched by Alcohol Change UK to encourage people to reflect on their alcohol consumption after the indulgences of the holiday season.
Dry January is a public health initiative where participants commit to abstaining from alcohol for the month of January.
The campaign aims to highlight the health benefits of taking a break from alcohol, such as improved sleep, clearer skin, increased energy, weight loss, and better liver function. It also provides an opportunity to reassess one’s relationship with alcohol and offers a chance to socialize without drinking.
TO GET THROUGH DRY JANUARY, TRY THESE TIPS:
The movement has grown globally, supported by an expanding market for non-alcoholic drinks, making it easier for people to participate. While Dry January can be a challenge, especially in social settings, many find it beneficial for their mental and physical well-being. It’s seen as a way to reset habits and promote healthier lifestyles, even if just for a month.
1. Set Clear Goals: Know why you’re doing it, whether for health, fitness, or financial reasons.
2. Find Alternatives: Stock up on non-alcoholic drinks like sparkling water, kombucha, and mocktails.
3. Socialize Without Alcohol: Enjoy events with non-alcoholic drinks and let others know about your commitment.
4. Stay Busy: Engage in hobbies or exercise to keep your mind off alcohol.
5. Track Progress: Celebrate milestones by tracking your alcohol-free days.
6. Reward Yourself: Treat yourself to small rewards, like a new book or spa day.
7. Seek Support: Join Dry January groups or find a friend to do it with.
8. Practice Mindfulness: Reflect on how alcohol affects your body and mind.
9. Avoid Triggers: Steer clear of situations that make you crave alcohol.
10. Focus on Health: Remind yourself of the health benefits, like better sleep and more energy
With preparation and focus, you can successfully navigate Dry January and establish healthier habits!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: COREY KATZ
Think Jedi Master with a “can’t get enough of Hawaii” vibe.
Corey’s inner passion for exceptional pizza and wine inspired his opening of Brix & Craft 10 years ago. But it was watching Chef’s Table Pizza on Netflix that re-ignited that original passion and focus. Today, Pizza, Wine, Craft Beer, award-winning Craft Cocktails and Mocktails await you in Martinez at Brix & Craft, where their bar and lounge can also accommodate large groups, private events and happy
So, how is Corey making a difference?
For Thanksgiving, Corey and his team provided and served 130 free meals for people and families who couldn’t afford it, even delivering to some of them. Others chipped in. “Somebody came with homemade cupcakes as well as mac & cheese,” he says. “We had turkey with turkey gravy. We had ham, cranberries, mashed potatoes, green beans and stuffing.”
For Christmas, “I do pizzas,” Corey smiles. Just as for Thanksgiving, he posts on social media, people let him know of anyone who needs help with food, Corey writes down the names and contact info. Then on the day of the feast Corey gives them a short time-frame to come pick up the pizzas.
Why? “I do it for families or individuals who may be struggling to put food on the table. There is no shame in needing support.”
