The start of the year is always a powerful time to take inventory of what is and isn’t working optimally in your life — and to set intentions for improvement so you can live your best life. Try this simple Life-Balance Wheel exercise and gain insights on areas of your life that are out of balance. It takes about 10 minutes, and upon completion you will be more aware of the areas of your life that are fulfilled, and those which need a little more love. DIY Life Balance Wheel Instructions: STEP 1: Draw a circle with eight even-sized slices STEP 2: Starting at the center, write out 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 on one line. Make sure you start with 1 at the center of the circle and work your way out in even segments to 10. Reference the accompanying illustration. STEP 3: Label each section with these categories: Financial, Physical Health, Mental Health, Spiritual/ Emotional Health, Fun/Recreation, Work/Career, Romance/ Sexuality. STEP 4: Rate your satisfaction for each segment with one representing the lowest and 10 being the highest level of satisfaction in your life for a given slice. EXAMPLE: If your physical wellbeing is tip-top, you might shade-in that pie slice to a level 9 or 10. If it were a one or two, you’d shade in only up to those lower levels.
JOURNAL PROMPTS (ONCE WHEEL RANKINGS ARE COMPLETE): • What did you notice from doing the wheel? • How satisfied are you with the different areas in your life right now? • Where are you in balance? PREPARATION DUMPLINGS & ASSEMBLY 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 2 tbsp. baking powder 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1 large egg 2/3 c. buttermilk 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted 1 c. heavy cream Chopped fresh parsley, for serving
SOUP Step 1 In a large Dutch oven or heavy pot over medium heat, heat oil. Cook onion, carrots, and celery, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 7 minutes. Stir in oregano; season with salt and pepper. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Step 2 Add chicken, broth, and thyme to pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to mediumlow and simmer, stirring occasionally, until chicken is cooked through, about 10 minutes. Transfer chicken to a plate or cutting board and shred with two forks. Keep soup at a simmer until ready to use.
DUMPLINGS & ASSEMBLY Step 1 In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, and salt. Make a well in center of flour mixture. Add egg, buttermilk, and butter to well and whisk with a fork until combined. Step 2 Add shredded chicken and cream to soup, then return to a simmer. Drop small or big spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture into pot. Cover and cook over low heat until dumplings are cooked through, about 5 minutes. Step 3 Top soup with parsley and divide among bowls.
