EYE EXAMS LEAD TO A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR

WWhether they are looking at a whiteboard, watching their teacher or reading on a screen, children rely on clear vision to learn. For school-aged children, up to 80% of learning occurs through the eyes. Vision issues in the classroom can transform fun educational experiences into frustrations for young learners, parents and teachers. If your child is struggling in school, it may be time to consider if their eyesight is to blame. To ensure children can see well enough to succeed in school, parents and teachers need to know the signs of vision impairments and help young learners access the vision care they need.

SIGNS OF CHILDHOOD VISION PROBLEMS

Unfortunately, children don't always know that they are experiencing vision problems. Many children naturally accept poor vision as normal since they don't have a basis for comparison. Children may also have trouble expressing themselves and may not be able to tell adults what they are experiencing. It is up to parents and teachers to recognize the signs of vision impairment.

Adults should be on the lookout for these common signs of childhood vision concerns.

• Holding books or screens near to the face

• Dislike and avoidance of reading and school

• Fatigue or tiredness after reading or learning activities

• An attention span which is shorter than ageappropriate

• Moving or tilting their head from side to side while reading

• Rubbing their eyes, or eyes that appear red or irritated

• Recurring headaches during the school day

• Frequently losing their place while reading

• Difficulty distinguishing between similar letterforms, such as knowing the difference between "b" and "d"

• Inability to retain the information they have recently read or looked at

• Difficulty focusing or staying on task during learning activities

Unfortunately, vision problems are often misunderstood and misdiagnosed as behavior issues, Attention Deficit Disorder or hyperactivity. Though there is some overlap between the signs and symptoms, vision impairment may actually lead to a short attention span and behavior challenges.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE AN EYE EXAM

When your child displays any signs of vision impairment, scheduling a comprehensive eye exam is the first step toward a solution. If falling grades or complaints of hating school are a concern, an eye exam can also be an insightful part of getting to the root of the problem.

Aside from one-off eye exams in response to concerns, an annual eye exam is crucial for every child's health care. Children grow quickly, and eye changes are an inevitable part of that growth. Just as children visit the pediatrician each year for a check-up, an annual eye exam can lead to early detection of issues. Just as importantly, yearly eye exams help young people understand the importance of eye health and establish a lifelong habit of good vision care.

Most schools offer vision checks during the school year. Too often, parents mistake these for a complete vision exam and believe a child's vision is perfect just because they scored well while reading an eye chart. However, in-school vision checks fall short of a comprehensive eye exam. In addition to an eye chart, an eye-care professional will look at the anatomy of a child's eye, and check eye focusing, eye tracking, visual perception and visual acuity.

Eye health is an often overlooked and misunderstood part of a child's growth and development. Since vision is such an essential part of the learning process, young learners need support to ensure they see well. By understanding the warning signs to look for and taking advantage of annual eye exams, parents can help ensure that students have the tools they need to achieve in school.

FOREST BATHING: A QUICK START GUIDE

Bathe in the forest? Do I need a towel? How much does it cost?

Luckily, no scrub brush is needed, no towel, and there is no cost to participate.

So, what is it, why would I want to do it and how do I get started?

Forest bathing simply put, is a self-care practice where an individual (or group) consciously spends time in nature. While it’s been practiced for centuries, it was coined shinrin-yoku in early 80s Japan, which translates to “forest bathing.”

To get the most out of this increasingly popular selfcare practice, a person immerses themself in nature, and engages in a full sensory experience where they awaken sight, smell, hearing, taste and touch.

This practice has been scientifically proven to yield multiple health benefits including lesser symptoms related to physical and mental ailments. Even major health care providers recognize the positive effects and tout its benefits to their members.

Forest bathing is a close cousin to mindfulness in that the practitioner slows down and arrives at the present moment, however, with mindfulness there’s a neutralization of sensory input whereas with forest bathing, the practitioner is encouraged to identify and relish in that which feels pleasurable and brings them joy (e.g., a bird’s song, a gentle breeze or the warmth of the sun on their skin).

BLACK BEAN & MUSHROOM ENCHILADA CASSEROLE

INGREDIENTS

1 (15 ounce) black beans, be sure to rinse.

½ cup veggie broth

2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

½ medium onion, chopped

1 teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

¼ teaspoon salt

8 ounces sliced button mushrooms

8 (6 inch) corn tortillas

1 cup red enchilada sauce, divided (see below)

½ cup shredded pepper Jack cheese

Optional:

1 avocado, cilantro, sour cream, cotija cheese

PREPARATION

Preheat oven to 350⁰.

Place beans and broth in a blender or food processor; blend until thick and saucy, about 10 seconds.

Heat oil in a medium pan over medium heat; add onion, cumin, oregano, paprika and salt; cook, stirring frequently, for 3 minutes. Add mushrooms; cook, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms begin to release their liquid. Add the pureed beans and simmer, stirring frequently, until thickened slightly, about 5 minutes.

Microwave tortillas on High until the tortillas are pliable.

Coat the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch casserole dish with olive oil spray. Spread 1/4 cup enchilada sauce on the bottom of it. Add about 1/3 cup black bean filling to each tortilla; roll and assemble, seam-side down, tightly in the casserole dish.

Pour the remaining enchilada sauce over the enchiladas, spooning the sauce onto the tortillas so they’re completely covered. Top with cheese. Cover with foil and bake until melted and bubbly, 25 to 30 minutes.

Serve with avocado, cilantro, sour cream and cotija cheese on top. Enjoy!
