Holiday Travel Tip Old paperbacks. I’m not good at reading books electronically, so I carry pocket-size editions of classic books—stuff I should have read by this point in my life.

They actually fit in your pocket, so they’re easy to pull out on the train or plane or (in my earlier days) bus station, and you don’t use up your battery.

Project On My Bucket List We have a little cabin (you might call it a shed) that I want to turn into a painting studio for my wife, who’s an art therapist and a gifted painter. Solar panels, wood stove, a little deck out front so she can work outside.

Favorite Holiday Tradition I make this hors d’oeuvre called rumaki.

I think it’s from the ‘50s. You wrap a piece of bacon around a water chestnut and a piece of chicken liver that’s been marinated in soy sauce and ginger and some other stuff, and broil it until the bacon is just crispy. It’s the greatest party food of all time. But you can’t tell people what’s in it.

They just have to eat it.

Craziest Project Submission I’ve Seen At Popular Mechanics One of our editors is currently trying to build a trebuchet, using an authentic all-wood design from the Middle Ages. I think he might do it. If he does, we’ll publish it.

How to Saber a Champagne Bottle Remove foil and wire cage from a chilled bottle of champagne. Find the seam running down the side of the bottle and turn it toward you. Grasp the bottom of the bottle and angle it away from your body at 45º.

Using the dull side of a knife (the pictured Viski Champagne Saber $92 works best), run the blade straight down the seam and then forcefully back up at a 45º angle as you strike the bottle’s neck ring. Don’t forget to follow through. Finally, collect high-fives from your thoroughly impressed guests.

The Dirty

Snowman

This boozy concoction got its name because it looks like a snowman jumped into a pool of beer. But take it from us, though it may be sweet, proceed with caution.

Ingredients

Directions:

Cocoa nibs and chopped hazelnuts, for garnish 1/2 ounces simple syrup 1 tsp cocoa nibs 1 1/4 ounces Cognac 3 ounces dark beer Splash coconut milk

Use simple syrup to rim a glass with crushed hazelnuts and cocoa nibs. In a shaker, muddle 1 teaspoon cocoa nibs and the simple syrup. Add the Cognac and shake well with ice.
