HEROES’ HOME RUN

C

aptain America, Iron Man and Spiderman were among the 5,000-strong crowd of runners who answered HomeTeamNS’ call for heroes on 17 May. Still Singapore’s only run to feature road, trail and sand terrains, this year’s HomeTeamNS REAL™ Run proved once again to be a big draw for amateur and professional runners of all ages. This edition featured 10km and 5km competitive and recreational run categories, both stretching from the Sentosa Gateway bridge to Siloso Beach. Guest-of-Honour Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for the Ministries of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, and President of HomeTeamNS, flagged off the run. He also took part in the 5km run with his family. An inaugural “HomeTeamNS Celebrates Life” 5km torch relay paid

homage to the over 180, 000 NSmen from SCDF and SPF who keep Singapore safe and secure. The 20 athletes involved, including members from the SCDF and SPF, ran the race and finished it as a team. Among them, Amos Chia (SPF) and Haikal Low (SCDF), both 20, found the sand segment the most challenging. One of the runners was Mohammad Shariff Abdullah, who runs and cycles some 200 kilometres every week despite being born without a left foot. The Singapore Blade Runner hopes that his performance will inspire fellow runners to go the distance: “If I can do it, they can do it much better.” Now how’s that for inspiration? Racing with the Best

Be it two wheels or four, Motul continues to test its lubricants in the world’s most demanding races

every motorsport race, the spotlight Itheninevitably shines on the hardware and talents behind the wheel. Yet just as important are the lubricants that keep the engines performing at their peak.

Just like the Home Team members who work in the background to keep us safe, Motul lubricants are the unsung heroes of the track, the product of relentless R&D and pushing limits on the toughest tracks for more than 160 years. MOTUL SUPPORTS SUZUKI’S RETURN TO MOTOGP 2015 This year sees Motul’s biggest involvement ever in MotoGP, the pinnacle of two-wheel racing that is both a perfect test bench and technical showcase for the brand. Motul is the technical supporter to four teams – Suzuki Factory team, Yamaha Tech3, Yamaha Forward Racing and Aprilia Racing Team Gresini. Making a comeback this year is Team Suzuki, who temporarily withdrew from MotoGP in 2012. Suzuki has developed its new GSX-RR, a fuel-efficient, aerodynamic and amazingly maneuverable fourcylinder machine that performs best on specially formulated Motul lubricants. The first rounds of the 2015 MotoGP season have seen the Suzuki team achieving strong performances, qualifying for instance in the front row of the grid in Argentina!

2015 is a busy year for Motul in the twowheel arena, as it will also be supporting scores of other teams in world-class competitions such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans motorcycles, the WSBK, the FIM EWC, the Rally Dakar, the WMX and the Isle Of Man Tourist Trophy. NISSAN NISMO PARTNERS MOTUL AT 24 HOURS OF LE MANS Motul is the appointed lubricant of choice for Nissan in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

24 Hours. For more than 60 years the iconic MOTUL logo has not only been seen on track-side ads and banners, but also on more than 200 cars that have enjoyed great success at La Sarthe. To stay on track with the latest racing events from around the world, follow www.facebook.com/motulsingapore. To find out more, drop Motul a line at enquiries@motul.com.sg

This year also marked the return of the Japanese marque to the premier class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its LM P1 Hybrid. This is a front-engine, twin-turbo 3-litre machine with carboncomposite body panels that is designed to excel with Motul experimental lubricants for the gearbox and engine. Motul has a longstanding relationship with Nissan that dates back to 2003, and has supported its motorsport arm NISMO for more than 100 races. Said NISMO President Shoichi Miyatani: “MOTUL is a brand that we trust after working together for over a decade in Super GT… the LM P1 is going to be our toughest challenge yet so we need partners we can rely on. MOTUL was the obvious choice for us.” Motul has, of course, an even more historic association with the Le Mans

Honouring our NSmen volunteers at the HomeTeamNS 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner

I

t was a night of jubilation as HomeTeamNS held its 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner on 24 April at the Bukit Batok Clubhouse. On that evening, the association recognised 46 NSmen volunteers who have played an important role in the HomeTeamNS transformation, and presented letters of appointment to 76 volunteers who served in various committees in HomeTeamNS. Gracing the event were Mr S Iswaran, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second 8

Minister for Trade and Industry, Chairman, Board of Governors; and Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs, President, HomeTeamNS. Said Mr Mohd Yusoff, who received the Long Service Award (15 Years): “I think it’s a passion to grow the club, and as an NSman it’s a way of giving back to the nation… senior members like us would like to share our positive experience with the young NSmen, for them to join us and make the association better.” It takes a “can-do” attitude to make the transformation happen. “Sometimes people are not so positive, or we don’t have enough budget. So we’ve got to be positive to get things done, or work around things,” said Mr Frederick Tan, who received the Meritorious Award (Gold).

“I’ve served in both the SPF and SCDF. They’ve seen me rise through the ranks – from a ‘nobody’ to a full colonel and I was the first NS colonel in SCDF. Probably the (‘can-do’) attitude helps.” For CPT (NS) Hisham Hasim, who received the Meritorious Award (Bronze), the transformation was a step in the right direction as it has made the clubhouses more relevant for the entire family. “Ten years ago, the clubhouses were just venues with swimming pools, bowling alleys and that’s it… but now we also cater to families, with more eateries and floaters in the pool, so we can bring our kids along and try new things and have fun in the clubhouses.” Our HomeTeamNS transformation would not have been possible without the support of our dedicated NSmen. Thank you all for your support!

He then proceeded to the briefing room where a team of fully armed officers was waiting to be deployed for operational duties. His confident voice rang out “Good morning guys. Let’s start the briefing.” This scene would have been an unthinkable dream for Cpl (APF) Mansur seven years ago. Today, he manages over 100 officers as assistant team leader at the Jurong Island Checkpoint and also safeguards the premises by conducting patrol duty and checking of vehicles entering and leaving the checkpoint. Aimless job-hopping “After graduating from ITE (Yishun) with a Nitec in Automotive Technology (Heavy Vehicles) and army thereafter, I job-hopped for two years as a mechanic, storekeeper and even did pest control at a prison facility,” shared Mansur. “Stepping into the world of work is very different from schooling days. I had seniors who were not willing to share their

knowledge with the juniors like me and I had to find my own way around.” Supporting his family When he was 10 years old, Mansur’s parents divorced and he had to share the burden of supporting the family with his three siblings – two elder sisters and one younger brother. “I started working part-time when I was 14 years old… at McDonald’s, Shell station...” said Mansur. “Even after

Taking the right career step During his stint as a pest control contractor, Mansur secretly observed some AETOS Auxiliary Police Officers (APOs) who were deployed at the same prison facility. Impressed by their professionalism, Mansur wanted to become a police officer like them. “I am glad that I made the right step to join AETOS in 2008. We APOs play a key role in safeguarding our national borders and key events like the Chingay parade. My mum is very supportive of my career choice because she can see that I truly love what I do.” A world of difference After joining AETOS, Mansur finally managed to buy over the house from his mum and take his Class 3 driving licence as well. “I have good mentors who take the time to guide me. I was even promoted to Corporal last year… this was all thanks to my seniors who gave me the opportunity.” “Today, I can proudly say that I draw a high monthly salary of over $3,000 and this amount truly means a world of difference to me and my family. I can definitely see myself working here for a very long time and I hope to lead my own division one day.”

Lend a helping hand Nadiyana Yacoub, 32, developed kidney failure after delivering her daughter, who was born with only one kidney

A GIFT OF HOPE Nadiyana is currently going through a divorce, her father has just passed away, and she has difficulty finding a job due to her thrice-weekly dialysis treatment at KDF. She and her daughter depend on community development council grants and whatever savings they have left for their daily and medical expenses. Unsubsidised dialysis treatment costs around $2,000 per month. For Nadiyana, her treatments are heavily subsidised by KDF, which in turn depends entirely on the generosity of our donors to bring hope to our needy patients, who are from the bottom 10% income group in Singapore. For KDF patients like Nadiyana, there is little festive joy during Hari Raya or National Day due to the immense problems they face. You can help by making a donation. For more information on how you can help, visit www.kdf.org.sg or call 6559-2630. ABOUT KIDNEY DIALYSIS FOUNDATION The Kidney Dialysis Foundation (KDF) is an independent, non-profit charitable organisation that provides subsidised dialysis treatment to needy members of our community so that these patients will not be deprived of treatment due to financial difficulties. AN UNBREAKABLE BOND A mother’s love stays strong till the end of time. Nadiyana Yacoub, 32, first developed gestational diabetes while she was pregnant with Nurizzah, 6. She did not worry much about it because gestational diabetes is expected to go away after giving birth. In the case of Nadiyana, it did not and she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Within two years, her kidneys failed and she now has to go for dialysis three times a week for the rest of her life. Her baby daughter, Nurizzah was born with Goldenhar Syndrome, a rare congenital defect that resulted in a deformed ear, lip, head and only one kidney. For Nadiyana, it was her daughter who gave her strength to endure the hardship. “My daughter is a special baby, she is very smart and is now learning how to write. She has no problem memorising numbers and the alphabet,” she said. Concerned that Nurizzah’s remaining kidney will fail, Nadiyana watches her daughter’s diet carefully and hopes she will learn to be independent.

This gorgeous colonial building is painting the town red, and it’s hard to miss it as you exit Tanjong Pagar MRT or travel along Maxwell Road. Built in 1928 by the British colonial government and designed by architect Frank Dorrington Ward, the grandiose four-storey building was a barracks for married junior officers, and in 1975 became the headquarters of the Singapore Traffic Police. Awarded heritage status in 2007, the building is now home to a contemporary design museum, where over 1,000 winners from over 50 countries have their designs displayed courtesy of the prestigious Red Dot Design Awards in Essen, Germany. Entry to the museum is $8 for adults and $4 for children, and there’s also a gift shop and cafe to explore. 28 Maxwell Road, Singapore 069120

You may have heard of Dr Sun Yat Sen, but did you know that this villa in Balestier was used as the Chinese revolutionary’s Southeast Asian base? The elegant double-storey home was built in the 1880s and bought over by Teo Eng Hock, a rubber magnate who was a keen supporter of the Chinese Nationalist Movement. He offered the house to Dr Sun in 1906, and the spacious Chinese bungalow, with its Victorian grandeur and spacious verandahs, later became the local headquarters of the Kuomintang party where important uprisings were planned. Admission is free for Singaporeans and PRs to view the galleries of artefacts, paintings and photographs of Dr Sun and his supporters in Southeast Asia. 12 Tai Gin Road, Singapore 327874 16

Nicknamed the “Little Whitehall of the Far East”, this sprawling 14-acre hilly terrain along Tanglin Road is located just a 10-minute drive from Orchard Road. Katong Antique House

Stepping into this house is like being transported to a Peranakan home in the 1920s. Owned by Peter Wee, a fourth-generation Baba, the fully restored two-storey shophouse is a living heritage and family home he inherited from his maternal grandfather. Opened to the public in 1979, the partshop part-museum is filled with antiques and family heirlooms, from exquisitely beaded slippers to colourful tiffin carriers and embroidered kebayas – the result of his collection of many years. 208 East Coast Road, Singapore 428907 FRONTLINE 17

LOST AND FOUND These un-un-un-unforgettable eats are back!

Brekkie Next Door Many locals were left wondering what happened to Tong Ah – one of Singapore’s most-loved coffeeshops – after it moved from its iconic corner location of 76 years. Well, just walk a few doors down and you’ll find it! The reassuringly familiar combo of kopi, kaya toast and soft-boiled egg is still as shiok. We Shell Return

Formerly from Lim Tua Tow Market in Hougang, the oyster omelette of Ah Hock Fried Oyster Hougang is a hit with succulent oysters, sweet potato flour, homemade chilli and loads of lard. Sinful, yes, but definitely worth trying if you’re in the area (Balestier Clubhouse anyone?). WHERE #01-54 Whampoa Hawker Centre OPEN 12.30pm–11pm, closed on Wednesdays

Back from the Hill

Widely touted as the best char kway teow in Singapore, this version by Hill Street Fried Kway Teow wins hands down with its crunchy bean sprouts, cockles, lup cheong and crispy lard packed with a distinctive wok-fried aroma. Definitely well worth the wait! WHERE Blk 16 Bedok South Road #01-41 Bedok South Road Market & Food Centre OPEN 10.30am–4.30pm, closed on Mondays

Still Got Power

Originally at Serangoon Road, Rahim Muslim Food has moved many times before settling in its current location. The “die-die-must-try” dish is undoubtedly their Mee Rebus Power – it’s probably the only mee rebus in Singapore where you can find an entire chicken thigh and satay sauce in it! n 15 April, five Home Team NSman of the Year Awards and five NSF of the Year Awards were presented at the SCDF Day Dining-In 2015. Held at Civil Defence Academy, the ceremony was graced by Ms Goh Soon Poh, Deputy Secretary (Policy), Ministry of Home Affairs. The award presentation to the NS personnel was in recognition of their exemplary commitment and contribution to NS and to SCDF’s vision and mission. The unprecedented occasion where both the NSFs and NSmen received the awards together gave added significance to the event. Home Team NSman of the Year 2015 recipient CPT (NS) Shah Indra Bin Abdol Rahim, 37, sees himself playing a crucial role alongside regulars in the event of a national emergency. Currently the Company Commander of 21(B) Rescue Battalion, CPT (NS) Shah Indra is dedicated to put in his best for NS, both physically and mentally: “I want to inculcate this same thinking in my men to inspire and motivate them. I always remind them to take their training seriously and carry out their tasks with a sense of purpose. I am honoured to receive this award and this will definitely inspire me to do even better.” He also thanked his wife – who was with him to receive the award – for her unwavering support.

SCDF volunteers cycle 10 hours on water filtration bicycles in aid of earthquake victims in Nepal

Associate Professor (A/P) Ho Peng Kee, Chairman of the Home Team Volunteer Network and Advisor to Mercy Relief, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi were on site in the afternoon to receive the cheques from corporate donors. “I hope what has been donated will be translated to practical, meaningful help in terms of the things that are needed by the victims in Nepal, such as water, blankets or medical supplies,” said A/P Ho Peng Kee. Kayden Leow, 17, a Civil Defence Lionhearter from ITE Central College, was one of the SCDF volunteers who took part in the cyclothon. “This is a very meaningful event and I’m glad I can do my part as a Lionhearter to raise awareness and support for the victims in Nepal,” he said.

W

hen the Civil Defence Lionhearters learned about the earthquake victims in Nepal, they knew they had to help. Together with the NGO Mercy Relief, they held a 10-hour cyclothon on water filtration bicycles to raise funds. On 2 May, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) volunteers, and volunteers from the Civil Defence Lionhearter Clubs, National Civil Defence Cadet Corps and Civil Defence Auxiliary Unit took turns on six bicycles, pedalling continuously from 10am to 8pm at Bugis Junction. While they cycled, Mercy Relief volunteers went around collecting donations from the public. The water filtration bicycles, known as PedalPure water filtration systems, are 100 per cent manually powered and can produce potable water for up to 1,000 persons per day. They had previously been deployed in disaster relief efforts such as the Malaysia floods in 2014, and the Typhoon Haiyan and Myanmar conflicts in 2013. Mercy Relief is currently assessing the possibility of deploying the bicycles in relief missions to Nepal. Seven organisations donated $3,000 each in support of the initiative, raising a total of $21,000. They were CityGas Pte Ltd, EMARCO Enterprise Pte Ltd, Fire Safety Managers’ Association (Singapore), Syntech Engineers Pte Ltd, Vanguard Fire Systems Pte Ltd, Association of Company Emergency Response Teams (Singapore), and Avid Architects Pte Ltd.

Man of the Band For trombonist Yeo Wee Aik, music is more fun when you play it together

I

served my full-time NS in SCDF as an emergency response specialist, and was a firefighter instructor in the Civil Defence Academy. NS has trained me to be a more positive person. There is always a solution to every problem. I just need to work to solve it. Like me, my men are passionate about NS, because they believe in our mission of saving lives and property. We are doing something good in the SCDF. I look forward to my ICTs. It’s a good time to catch up with my fellow NSmen. As Company Sergeant Major, I take care of their welfare and training, and the attendance rates for our last few ICTs have been consistently high. In fact, my men are constantly in touch with me, and we’d text one another to ensure that we’d meet at our upcoming ICT. I am honoured and proud to receive the Home Team NSman of the Year 2015. It certainly motivates me further to put in my very best to serve the nation. Music is my life. I started playing the piano when I was four, and most of the time I was only playing by myself. I was so happy when I played the trombone in my secondary school band with 40 to 50 people! I’ve been a band major since I was in Secondary Three, and I joined the Singapore Wind Symphony after my ‘O’ Levels, when I was 17. Brass is what I play. I play the trombone and euphonium in various bands, including the Singapore Wind 28

WO2 (NS) Yeo Wee Aik – shown here with his tenor trombone – is committed to his ICTs because he believes in the SCDF’s mission of saving lives

Symphony, Kim Seng Wind Symphony and City Swing Big Band. On my days off work, I practise with my bands, and I teach in schools as well. I want to reach out to more people to promote the music I love. The trombone and other wind instruments are more versatile than what most people realise. Recently my bands have been working with other musicians, such as a Chinese orchestra, and even collaborating on pop songs that are arranged for a wind symphony. If you like to make music with people, join a band! It’s fun to learn as a group… and performing is always a joy.

WO2 (NS) YEO WEE AIK, 31 Retail Executive, The Band World Trombonist with Singapore Wind Symphony and Kim Seng Wind Symphony NS appointment: Company Sergeant Major, 403 MRT Shelter Company (Hillview) Home Team NSman of the Year 2015

profile spf ASP (NS) Lam Kwok Yew, founder of Global Village for Hope, contributes warm clothing, blankets and sleeping mats to a mountain villager in Chin State, Northern Myanmar

ASP (NS) LAM KWOK YEW (LINUS LIN), 34 Founder and Principal of L-intelligent Horizons Eduhub Pte Ltd (www.lintelhorizons.com) Founder and Explorer of Global Village for Hope (www.facebook.com/ GlobalVillageForHope) NS appointment: Former Commanding Officer Queenstown Neighbourhood Police Centre

Inspiring Change

Lam Kwok Yew believes in empowering the needy at home and abroad

N

S brought me out of my comfort zone by challenging me to do things that are different from civilian life. It has made me a better leader and I continue to interact with the people I meet in NS. In my first ICT cycle as an NUS undergraduate, one of my teammates was the owner of a chain of cafes. He became my biggest customer for my computer business when I was still in school. To me, NS is the best experience any man can have. We just need to have an open mind. I am proud to be a PNSman.

My NS days have given me many stories to inspire my students – how I was involved in nabbing illegal immigrants at construction sites, going undercover to catch bookies at coffeeshops, raiding gambling dens, and so on. As an entrepreneur, I set up L-intelligent Horizons Eduhub to provide academic and life skills education to both children and adults. I aim to directly impact one million under-performing students in my lifetime with my team. Mother Teresa has been my inspiration. New-age and instrumental music are also food for my soul.

I inspire positive change in Singaporeans by conducting seminars, workshops and tutorials for students, parents and entrepreneurs. In Myanmar, I sponsor orphanages with English teachers, and poor communities with rice. I dig wells and install water pumps, widen roads and build libraries to improve their lives. I faced language barriers, food poisoning, infection on my legs, scepticism and more in my humanitarian work. But nothing stays bad forever, and I know I will overcome any problem. Humanitarian work is a lifelong journey for me. My goal is to build 100 schools or libraries for needy children around the world. You are welcome to join me in my next trip to the villages and experience the kind of lives these people are leading. There, you can impact their lives directly and I will show you how.
