What’s 4-H? It is an international organization including over 7 million members in 80 countries throughout the world. For Canada, 4-H started in Roland, Manitoba. The 4-H programs available today are for both farm and non-farm youth across Canada.
Why 4-H? 4-H allows youth to experience, learn and to do lots of activities. There are many different 4-H clubs around Canada that range from taking photographs, cooking and caring for animals.
Why is it 4-H? 4-H represents the four “H”s in the pledge. We pledge our Head, Heart, Hands and Health.
To Prospective Buyers, Another year of 4-H has flown by and we are once again approaching our sale. This year we have 10 members in the Rivers 4-H Beef Club. This year has been a struggle to gather as we normally would to do activities, speeches, rally day and weigh days. Our club has remained positive throughout the year and has held virtual meetings and speeches to stay connected and to plan for the upcoming achievement and sale. Throughout the past few months, every member has continued to work with their project animal(s). Although we cannot have a live show and sale, we are offering 9 steers for sale on DLMS Farmgate Timed Auction. We are striving to make this experience as easy as possible for both bidders and buyers. On DLMS, all prospective buyers will be able to place bids on the steer of their choice. There are also a variety of options as to how you would like your bidding experience to be. On the following pages, you will find a DLMS Farmgate Sale manual for further instructions and explanations. The 2020-21 4-H year has posed a struggle for us to do fundraising and for activities we could attend. We did a First-Aid Kit fundraiser which consisted of us selling kits to family and friends and over social media. Throughout this past year, covid has struck families financially. During Christmas this year, every family gathered food which I then delivered to the Rivers Food Bank where families in need could receive food to enjoy over the holidays. We would like to throw a big thank you to our leaders Shawn Airey, Wenda Best and Jr. leader Connor English. We can not thank you enough for your commitment and support. Also, we would like to thank the parents for helping us with our projects, sitting in on the meetings and with whatever jobs need to be done. I would like to thank my fellow board members: Vice President-Jillian Burt, Secretary-Karas Munz, Treasurer-Austin Peters and the Club Reporters, Chase Airey and Corbin Munz. Also, I would like to recognize Blake Airey, Kinley Peters, Landon Hockley and Shayden Manz. I thank you all for the effort and commitment you have shown to the 4-H club. The group of steers we are offering this year allows you to be confident in your purchase. They have been well fed and you can see the amount of effort each one of my fellow members have put in. Please join us for the sale on July 7th! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at (431)282-3225. Thank you for taking the time to read this! Your truly, Kate-Leigh Heapy—President

4-H Beef is the cream of the crop as far as purchasing beef goes. This is a very cost-effective way of stocking your freezer with premium beef. In comparing the cost of purchasing a 4-H beef to a whole beef from your local grocery store you can save between $2200 & $2500. Don’t miss this opportunity to stock up on quality beef while supporting these future cattle producers. Team up with another business or family. Processing can be split into halves or quarters. Not only are you supporting a local 4-H member but also the local butcher and you know you are getting the best beef money can buy! Purchasing a 4-H steer is a very effective way to advertise your business. The 4-H members make a great effort to make sure your advertising goes a long way. Sale buyer’s names are posted in several places. Buyer’s lists are reviewed with members. As a business the advertising expense is a great tax write off. Fill out the registration form to signup for a free user account and it allows you to select a username and password for use on all Farm Gate Timed auctions. (please note due to some of the text notification features the FarmGate Time Auction Site requires a new account separate account from your DLMS Live sale site) - After you create your FarmGate account you will receive a txt message with a pin code to verify your account. - On your first log in to FarmGate Timed auctions we recommend you go to your profile and confirm your notifications are set to YES. This allows the site to send you text and/or email notifications when you are out bid and if there is activity on your favorite lots. Returning FarmgGate users: - If you have used Farm Gate Timed auctions in the past simply enter your user name and password to continue. After you have logged in you are able to browse the timed auctions on DLMS FarmGate Timed Auctions. 3. How to Bid Now that you are logged in and your account phone number / email is verified you are able to bid on an upcoming sale. Simply find the lot you are interested in bidding on. After you have found the lot there are 2 options for bidding on the lot. - Place Next Bid – to place the next bid on the item, you see the amount in the first box, you simply click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed. - Max Bid Amount – to place a max bid you put your max bid in the second box listed as “Max Bid” on the item, and then click the “Place Bid” button and after you review the bid and agree to the terms and conditions your bid will be placed as the next bid. With the Max Bid placed the computer will then keep you as the high bidder to the max amount you have placed. This can be a
great feature if you are not able to give 100% attention to the sale close out and protect your interest so you do not miss out on any lots you want to purchase. The Max Bid amount is completely confidential from the seller during the sale process. Example of How the Max Bid Works - If the lot has a $2000 bid on it and you place a proxy bid of $3500 into the system, the computer will bid $2100 for you but if some one else bids $2200, the computer will again bid for you, this time at $2300. The system will look after your interest to a maximum of $3500. If another bidder is on at $3600, your proxy will no longer be effective and you will no longer have the winning bid on this lot without once again logging in and bidding again or moving your attention to a second lot of interest. Please note that in some cases a lot value can change very quickly if 2 max bids are placed on the same lot competing against each other. 4. Watch List Feature If you have items in multiple auctions or only a few from the same auction that you want to watch with out having to scroll through the entire list you can add the lots to your watchlist. On each lot you will see the “eye” button beside the bid button, by clicking this “watchlist” Icon that item is added to your personal watchlist for easy viewing of just your favorite lots in this sale or on the entire site. 5. Sale Ending / Closeout Most FarmGate Timed Auction sales close racehorse style with extended bidding. What is Racehorse Style Close? Racehorse style sale close is when the entire sale stays open in extended bidding. This type of sale allows you as the bidder to change to a different lot within the same sale if the bidding has gone in to extended bidding. How will Extended Bidding works? When we get to the close out end time the clock for close extends with any bid placed with less than 5 min on the clock. This type of extended bidding turns the end time to more of a soft time. Extended bidding allows bidders to compete in lots like a real auction and give all bidders the same time to make a decision. Always follow the clock to see how much time remains in the sale you are interested in.
6. Bidding Close & Follow-up After the clock has gone to “ENDED” and no bidding has occurred for 5 min the computer will declare the sale finished. Following the close typically within 24 hours of the sale close the sale consignor will contact all winning bidders to arrange payment, transfer of pedigrees and delivery/Pick up of your lot. Or as the winning bidding you can contact the sale consignor / sale manager to confirm payment instructions. Please make sure that your account info is up-to-date and correct if you are the winning bidder of a lot as this is how the billing is sent to Sale manager and/or Sale consignor. Charolais Cross Steers Blake Airey Hi! My name is Blake Airey. My parents are Shawn and Tanya Airey. Our family farms west of Rivers. I’m 8 years old and I enjoy crafting, gardening, baking, helping on the farm, camping and fishing. This is my first year with a 4-H steer project. I have been showing calves as a Peewee since I was 2 years old. My steer is named Blockbuster. He’s a Charolais cross. I think my steer will be at least AAA and you will find him very delicious. His meat might even make your mouth water. It will be the best meat you’ve tasted in a long time. Proceeds from my steer will go into my education fund. If you want to know more about my steer, please call or text my Dad, Shawn at 1-204-724-8823.
Chase Airey Hi my name is Chase Airey. I am 10 years old and my parents are Shawn and Tanya Airey. We farm west of Rivers and have a purebred Charolais cattle operation, HTA Charolais. I enjoy helping on the farm, fishing, playing hockey, camping and boating. This is my 3rd year in 4-H. My steer’s name is Fridge and he is a Charolais cross. I named him Fridge for 2 simple reasons: 1. He’s built like a fridge. He is big and thick. 2. He’s packed with delicious beef that will make your mouth water. I am almost certain he will grade prime. The profits from my steer will go towards my education fund. I really want to thank all the businesses that buy steers and support the club. If you are interested in buying my steer please call or text my Dad, Shawn at 1-204 724 8823. Thank you!
