A Message from

Chip Cherry, CCE

The blend of volunteer and staff leadership, coupled with strong public sector partners led to a number of outstanding accomplishments in 2017. Chief among those accomplishments were: • Vision Statement – developed a new Vision Statement that more accurately frames who we are and what we do.

• Strategic Plan – developed a plan which will provide the Chamber with focus and direction for years to come – bit.ly/HMCCstrategic.

• Membership – remained strong with more than 2,100 active members; engagement was impressive with over 12,000 members attending events.

Our performance and accomplishments shown throughout this report culminated in us being selected as the #1 Chamber in the country, in our size category. This recognition reinforces the belief that our Chamber is doing meaningful work and is a key partner in moving the community forward!

We played a role in a number of other noteworthy accomplishments to include securing State support for Cyber Camp and the new Alabama School for Cyber and Engineering. Both of these are significant developments for our region that position us well for the future.

Normally, I would close by saying that the potential for 2018 is bright. In this case, that would be an understatement. On January 10th, an announcement was made that will forever change the economy of our region: Mazda-Toyota will build a joint automotive manufacturing facility here that will produce 300,000 vehicles a year and employ 4,000 people. That $1.6 billion investment, coupled with growth on Redstone and a strong economic development pipeline, will lead to an exceptional 2018.

Cummings Research Park Cummings Research Park (CRP) is the Nation’s second largest research park with 3,843 acres and nearly 300 companies. We manage, internally market, and promote CRP to expand industry and recruit new companies to a vibrant and connected community that fosters ingenuity, creativity and scientific achievements that solve our Nation’s most complex challenges.

MASTER PLAN IMPLEMENTATION UPDATE Following the approval of the new master plan in late 2017, the CRP Board and City of Huntsville began to work on revisions to zoning ordinances.

Revisions to the existing CRP East and CRP West zoning ordinances were made and approved this year.

Those revised zoning ordinances are now officially in the City’s Red Book.

Additionally, the CRP Board and City have been working on a new zoning ordinance for the new mixeduse sites in CRP. This has been a very deliberate and thoughtful process. We anticipate this new zoning ordinance will be approved in mid-2018.

We have worked on a design for new gateway and light-pole signage for CRP in accordance with the rebrand. We anticipate new signage in 2018.

Government & Public Affairs The Chamber represents the business interests of the Huntsville and Madison County area on the local, state and national levels of government, promoting policies and legislation that allow for the continued economic prosperity of the region. Roughly half of the local economy is a function of federal spending on military, space and homeland security concerns, consequently much of the Chamber’s government and public affairs efforts are focused on the growth and protection of these activities and the Redstone Arsenal. The division also conducts a number of events which are intended to enhance relationships with elected local, State and Federal officials and key federal partners.

Small Business & Events 2017 was another year of growth, progress, and development. We added preevent Contender receptions to both the Small Business and Best Places to WorkŽ awards, giving business leaders and event sponsors a chance to network, exchange ideas, and engage in conversation. Continuing our partnership with the Huntsville/Madison County Public Library, computer application classes were offered as part of our Professional Development Series – which also included topics such as social media marketing and starting a business in Alabama. We made a point of distinguishing between Networking (Business & Brews and Breakfast & Biz) and Professional Development events to make it easier for individuals to attend events that were most beneficial to them.
