TWO NEW DEGREES Henderson adds: n B.S. Natural Sciences n B.S. Education with focus on Mathematics Henderson State University added two new degrees last fall following approval by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education. The Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Sciences provides a pathway to medical and pharmacy school. The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a focus on mathematics addresses the high demand for secondary educators both state-wide and nationally by placing emphasis on teacher preparation and math content courses. As a meta-major, the natural sciences degree plan “provides students with a strong background in the sciences, while giving them the freedom to hone in on the careers that really interest them,”

said Dr. Shannon Clardy, director of Applied Professional Sciences and Technology. The new secondary education degree will attract prospects desiring to teach secondary math, said Dr. Charlotte White-Wright, director of Health, Education, and Social Sustainability. “This degree has a strong focus on education coursework while maintaining the rigor and high expectations of state math competencies,” Wright said. A third degree program has been re-named with a focus on the everchanging digital landscape. Digital Media Production, formerly Innovative Media, aims to prepare students for employment in the modern media workplace through practical, hands-on experiences, and by introducing new media technologies and production. 2023

ALUMNI AWARDS Henderson State University honored six outstanding alumni at the Alumni Association’s annual awards banquet March 31. Distinguished Alumni awards were presented to Ellis “Scooter” Register and V.L Cox. The late Malachi Smith received the “H” Award, and the Young Alumni Award was presented to Nikki Chandler. Register is a high school coaching legend who was inducted into the Arkansas High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2021. He was head coach at Little Rock McClellan (1990-1994), El Dorado (1995-2002), Little Rock Catholic (2003-2009), and Little Rock Central (2010-2017). Register attended Henderson State where he earned both his bachelor’s (1974) and master’s (1979) degrees. Cox is a professional artist who has been highly active in projects that involve human rights and equality. In 2015, she launched her national “End Hate” project, an anti-discrimination series based on segregation-era doors that were twice placed on the steps of the Arkansas State Capitol and at the base

of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Cox earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Henderson State in 1991. Smith served the campuses of Arkadelphia Methodist College, Henderson College, Henderson-Brown College, and Henderson State Teachers College for more than 40 years. He became the head cook in 1903 and retired from Henderson in 1947. After the fire of 1914 destroyed much of the Henderson-Brown campus, Smith and his kitchen staff contributed $25 (an immense amount of money at the time) to help rebuild the college. Henderson’s dining center was named the Malachi Smith Dining Center in February 2023. Chandler is a 2013 Henderson graduate who has been very active in the community, including a leadership role with the Arkadelphia Regional Economic Development Alliance and Area Chamber of Commerce before moving to a new role with the area’s newest corporate addition, Hostess Brands, in the past year.

Students often need assistance navigating various campus resources at Henderson State University. The new Reddie Outreach Center (ROC) helps point students in the right direction, while also providing critical assistance such as a food pantry, clothes closet, and a life skills education center. The center, located in the former campus radio station in the Garrison Center, also serves as the office for Title IX. Bobbie Lee, director of compliance and student advocacy, leads the center, which is also staffed by two graduate assistants. “Our goal is to provide wrap-around services for all Reddies,” said Lee. “As specific needs are identified, we will take steps to ensure students have what they need to be successful.” Tax deductible donations to the ROC can be made online at hsu.edu/give.

Jackson joins Henderson Advancement team Dr. Lloyd Jackson has returned to his alma mater to serve as Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancement and Chief Fundraising Officer for Henderson State University. Jackson, who started his new position May 8, graduated from Henderson in 2002 with a degree in mathematics and earned a master’s degree from Henderson in educational leadership in 2006. He received a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. HSU.EDU

The lessons I learned from the people of Henderson forged not only early memories, but also gave me leadership exposure and daily examples to follow that I still use today.” — Dr. Trey Berry others. ‘That Old Reddie Spirit’ is alive and well. It is time to harness the power of our history and look ahead to a future we can create together. It’s time to come home and serve the community that shaped our family. “I know we can build upon the talents of so many wonderful and dedicated students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends at Henderson to shape an even stronger and more vibrant ‘Reddie Family’ and to create an ever-evolving, unique campus where students come not only to learn, but to flourish,” Berry said.

Berry has a Bachelor of Arts in history degree from Ouachita Baptist, and a Master of Arts degree and Doctor of Philosophy in history from the University of Mississippi. He is married to Dr. Katherine Simms Berry, also from Arkadelphia. They have an adult son, Tanner, and a daughter, Berkeley, a 10th-grade student.

DR. TREY BERRY

our family has a storied history with enderson. Could you please tell us a little bit bout that?

Our family history at Henderson started in 1951 hen my father, Clyde Berry, came to play football nd baseball. He played otball under Duke ells. Later in 1963, ur family returned to enderson and my father was assistant football oach again under Duke Wells. In 1967 he ecame head football coach and on two different ccasions he served as head baseball coach for e Reddies. He also taught kinesiology classes r over 20 years. Several members of my immediate family also old degrees from Henderson, including my wife, r. Katherine Berry. So, the history of Henderson ns deep and long in the Berry Family.

Q&A

hat are some of your favorite memories owing up on the Henderson campus?

Without a doubt, my favorite memories from the ge of three until my early college years has to e of the people of Henderson. So many faculty nd staff helped raise me and set great examples r leadership and human decency for a young oy. As a freshman at HSU, many members of e faculty taught what it meant to be a serious udent. That is a debt that can never be repaid.

ease share some of your hobbies and other terests. What is something others would be urprised to know about you?

Our family loves to travel when we can. That as been the most educational experience for ur children, Tanner and Berkeley. These days, avel revolves around club volleyball for our aughter, Berkeley. We have traveled throughout e country playing and watching volleyball. It has een a tremendous time for us all. Both Katherine and I find solace in nature and we ve our times hiking, spending time at our home way from home at Dauphin Island, Alabama, or oing to various Arkansas State Parks. Those are uch “regrouping” places and times for us.

ow does it feel to be returning to Arkadelphia this role at such a pivotal moment in enderson’s history?

We feel a calling to be here at Henderson and Arkadelphia at this time. We see so many

possibilities of working with the faculty, staff and students and building the Henderson campus. But we also see many possibilities for partnerships beyond our campus and within the Arkadelphia community. What role can alumni play in the success of the university? We want to work to engage our alumni and friends at a new level. Tapping into their love for and memories of Henderson will be pivotal in the future success of our campus. It is important to us that all alumni feel welcome to return to campus at any time and we want to get to know them all. Some of the best recruiters for university campuses are alumni and we would also like to engage them in many of those efforts as well. What strategies will you use to strengthen relationships with alumni, donors, and external partners? It is important to us to build personal relationships with our alumni and friends. That will be an important part of how we approach the entire Reddie Community. We also want to actively communicate in meaningful ways. Those will include personal visits and alumni gatherings throughout our state and region. How would you describe your leadership style and approach to decision-making? Best decisions are made collaboratively and when people feel free to voice their opinions openly and freely. I like to ask for facts, ideas and meaningful feedback before most decisions are made. We think best when we think together! What do you see as the key opportunities for Henderson in the coming months? The main focuses in these coming months will be on growing our undergraduate and graduate enrollment, getting to know the Reddie Community and showing our appreciation to the good people on campus and beyond, continuing to concentrate on sound fiscal management, and to help our campus grow strong continuing and new academic programs. It is also very important to Katherine and I to let Henderson students know that they are family to us. They are why we do all what we do -- each and every day! We want to be “present” to show them our love, care and appreciation.

In the interim...

BOB FISHER Dr. Bob Fisher, a native of Arkadelphia who spent 21 years as president of Belmont University, was appointed to serve as interim chancellor of Henderson State during the 2023 fall semester. Fisher is also an alumnus, former Student Government Association president and former dean of the School of Business at Henderson State. Fisher’s “family of Reddies” includes: his father, Jim Fisher; his wife, Judy; daughter Jennifer Knickerbocker and her husband, Neil; daughter Kelly Collamore; son Rob Fisher; sister Linda Fulbright and her husband, John. “From a personal point of view, it felt like a capstone moment for me to be able to return to Henderson at such a critically important time in the life of the institution,” Fisher said. “As the Phil Collins song goes, ‘I’ve been waiting for the moment for all of my Life, O Lord.” Bob and Judy Fisher were presented with the “H” Award for distinguished service to Henderson at a reception in December. Prior to joining Belmont, Fisher spent four years as vice president for academic affairs at Arkansas State University. He served for 12 years on the business faculty at the University of Central Arkansas before becoming business school dean at Henderson. HSU.EDU
