An official ribbon cutting celebration for the Charles and Anita Cabe StudentAthlete Success Center was held September 10, 2021.

The facility, which was made possible by a gift from Anita and the late Charles Cabe of Gurdon, Arkansas through the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation, opened for use by Henderson State student-athletes in April.

“I AM SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED AND PROUD TO SEE THIS NEW FACILITY UNVEILED,” Anita Cabe said. “It was always our goal to be able to provide something that would impact Henderson State student-athletes for generations to come and this academic center is the culmination of that dream.”

The 4,230 square foot academic facility now sits connected to the west side of the Formby Athletic Center and features a group-sized study room, 15-person computer lab, study lounge, new office for the academic advisor, private study carrels and a full-sized classroom for team study halls. A glassed in foyer welcomes students and guests into the building and houses plaques honoring Charles and Anita Cabe, as well as the C. Louis and Mary C. Cabe Foundation and all of the contributors to the project.

The construction of the Charles and Anita Cabe Student-Athlete Success Center also created an extra 1,490

square feet of weight room space, which provided the opportunity to revamp the work-out area which serves every Henderson State athletic program.

The weight room features 15 Reddiesbranded weight racks, new heavy-duty rubber flooring, enhanced lighting, and new wall signage. The expansion increases the number of studentathletes allowed in the weight room at the same time by 25 percent.

“I want to once again thank Charles and Anita Cabe for their vision, generosity and spirit, which helped make this dream of theirs a reality,” Athletic Director Shawn Jones said. “None of this is possible without their selflessness and love for Henderson State University. I know how unbelievably excited our student-athletes are to have a resource like this available to them, and I have no doubt that this facility will positively impact the lives of Reddie student-athletes for years to come.”

Q&A WITH DR. CHUCK WELCH, PRESIDENT OF THE ARKANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM Henderson State officially became a member institution of the Arkansas State University System on February 1. For Reddies who may not be as familiar with the ASU System, can you please give a brief introduction?

The Arkansas State University System is based in Little Rock across the street from the State Capitol in the historic Winthrop Rockefeller Building and serves almost 38,000 students annually on campuses in Arkansas and Queretaro, Mexico, and globally online.

As the second-largest system, we serve as a significant collective voice on state higher education issues.

Henderson is the system’s seventh member institution and just the second four-year university. Additional members include Arkansas State University, a four-year Carnegie R2 research institution in Jonesboro with degree centers at ASU-Beebe, ASUMountain Home and ASU Mid-South in West Memphis. The $100-million, privately funded Arkansas State University Campus Queretaro opened in September 2017. The system’s two-year college institutions include ASU-Beebe, with additional campuses in Heber Springs and Searcy and an instructional site at Little Rock Air Force Base; ASU-Newport, with additional campuses in Jonesboro and Marked Tree; ASU-Mountain Home; ASU Mid-South in West Memphis; and ASU Three Rivers (formerly College of the Ouachitas) in Malvern.

The Henderson campus is already seeing the benefits of being part of the ASU System, including a new enterprise system implementation. What other opportunities do you see for collaboration across campuses?

Our Accelerate ASU initiative with Huron Consulting in 2017 enabled us to perform a comprehensive operational and programmatic review of the System. It identified many opportunities to increase revenues and become more efficient operationally.

Early implementation efforts have been very successful. Centralized information technology functions have led to substantially lower group pricing for software and labor savings. Our new strategic research department is providing critical data to help us make informed decisions. We see additional opportunities in areas such as procurement and payroll services.

All of these shared services–in addition to long-standing system areas such as finance, legal, audit, and governmental relations–bring tremendous value and expertise to Henderson.

Henderson is working through a multi-year financial recovery process. Where do you already see progress, and what can Henderson alumni and friends expect to see in the year ahead?

We are making progress in building accurate, transparent and sustainable budgets and operational models. We are making progress in implementing financial controls, reporting and protocols that will prevent some of the challenges of the past from reoccurring. We are also making progress in analyzing the finances of the institution in an effort to strategically allocate resources to ensure long-term growth and sustainability.

This is most definitely a multiyear recovery process and difficult decisions remain. However, I am confident we are moving in the right direction and implementing the appropriate structures to place the university back on stable financial footing. Henderson will follow the same four guiding principles expected of all ASU System institutions when making key decisions: Strategic, Analytical, Efficient, Accountable.

Can you provide an update on recruitment for the next chancellor of Henderson State University?

It was announced on August 23, 2021, that Dr. Jim Borsig would be stepping down for health reasons, and we would be relaunching the chancellor search immediately. We will utilize essentially the same process, materials and advisory committee from the initial search that was suspended because of the pandemic. I am hopeful that we can name a new chancellor during the fall semester.

You currently serve as board chair of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, an association of more than 400 public colleges, universities and systems. How has this influenced your work, and what trends do you see across higher education?

My service as AASCU Board Chair for the past two years has given me a deeper appreciation for the challenges and opportunities facing higher education institutions across the country. I have also come to realize that the institutions within our System are generally in a much stronger position than many of their national peers. Enrollment challenges, financial constraints, mergers and acquisitions, and radical operational model changes are trends we will see nationwide in the next decade. This will be the result of changing markets and student

enrollment patterns, as well as a greater focus on accessibility and affordability.

I believe institutions will also be forced to take a closer look at programmatic offerings to ensure viability. Institutions that are flexible and willing to consider change will thrive, while others face a very uncertain future.

As a former president of Henderson State University, you have lived on this campus and are extremely familiar with all things Reddie.

What is your favorite Henderson tradition and why is this important to you? How do you describe the Reddie Spirit to others?

Wow! This is most definitely the toughest question of all. There are so many wonderful traditions that I love. I immediately think of the Battle of the Ravine and the week-long activities and fun. There is nothing like it in America! I also think of the chills I get hearing the Henderson Showband play “B Flat to G.” I guess the most special tradition, and my personal favorite, would have to be “The Pine Tree Speech.” There is just nothing quite like that atmosphere and that story. It is hard to truly describe the Reddie Spirit, but it is definitely a sense of pride and unwavering commitment to the university. It is also a spirit of resilience that has allowed Henderson to recover from multiple tragedies in her 131-year history, and it is exactly that spirit that will lead us back from our recent challenges.

REMEMBERING

COAK MATTHEWS Henderson State Athletics and the Reddie family suffered a tremendous loss on June 27, 2021, when legendary former swimming and diving head coach Coak Matthews passed away at the age of 66. Matthews was one of the most decorated coaches in Henderson history and was at the helm of the Red Wave swimming and diving programs for 39 years.

HE RECENTLY RETIRED from full-time coaching in April and is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary, and their three children, Sallie, William and Blanton.

A certified master level coach by the College Swimming Coaches Association, Matthews coached over 200 All-Americans, four individuals who won national championships and led both the men’s and women’s programs at Henderson State to numerous Top-10 national finishes at the NAIA and NCAA II levels of competition during his time at HSU. He was named the CSCAA National Diving Coach of the Year in 1990, the NAIA National Men’s Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year in 1994, was inducted into the Arkansas Swimming Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Henderson State Athletic Hall of Honor in 2003.

An icon of the sport in the state of Arkansas, Matthews’ impact extended far beyond the campus of Henderson State. In addition to his work at HSU, Matthews served as the swim coach at Arkadelphia High School from 1983 to 2005, where he led the Lady Badgers to state titles in 1986 and 1987. Outside of competition, Matthews dedicated much of his time to advancing the sport of swimming in Arkadelphia and the surrounding community. Throughout his career, Matthews taught and organized swimming lessons, summer All-Star clinics, and camps in Southwest Arkansas.

TRIBUTES TO COACH MATTHEWS Matt Bold, ‘08, ‘10 “During such an important stage in our lives, when many of us were hundreds or thousands of miles from home, Coak Matthews was a father to us.

Coak didn’t just care about how fast we were in the water, he wanted to make sure we were successful in the classroom and in life after we left Henderson. He taught us many life lessons through the sport of swimming. How to work hard, how to persevere through adversity, how to be a family and how to love unconditionally.”

Jodi Baker Coffee, ‘98 “Coak has been a constant my whole life. Leading, pushing, guiding—in the pool and many other aspects. His Christ-centered approach was unwavering. He never mentioned accomplishment without giving God the glory. A fierce competitor with a gentle spirit. I will miss him dearly.”

Payten Frunzi, ‘16 “Coach Matthews was a one of a kind type coach.

He took chances on his athletes and always believed in his team! He really embodied the One Heart, One Mind, One Team slogan we had painted in the pool. He made such an impact in the swimming community, leaving his mark as a person who will never be forgotten. He taught me to never give up hope in swimming and in life.

He will be sorely missed. Red Wave for life.”

Coach Scotty Serio, ‘14 “Coach Coak loved every single one of his swimmers and divers. As an athlete for Coak, his influence and drive went way further than just being faster in the pool. He often would just ask me about life and would always be willing to show me how sometimes the thing you want is sitting right in front of you—even though there may be obstacles in the way. Coak was an integral part of our community and will be a dearly missed mentor, confidant and role model.

We can’t express enough thanks and gratitude to the Matthews family for sharing such a great Godly man with so many of us during a crucial time in our lives. There are no words to express our sorrow, but Coak’s legacy will live on in this program and will serve as a guiding example of what it means to be a part of this team and this community.”

PORTRAIT OF MAURICE R. HORTON, SR., UNVEILED AT CEREMONY

Family members and friends of Maurice R. Horton, Sr., gathered on campus May 6, 2021 for a reception and unveiling of a portrait in his honor. In 1957, Horton became the first African American to receive an undergraduate degree from Henderson.

HORTON GRADUATED from Peake High School in Arkadelphia and originally attended college in Pine Bluff. At the encouragement of his mother and others, he returned home and transferred to Henderson State Teachers College.

Following graduation, he taught math and science at Peake High School and returned to Henderson in the early 1960s to pursue a master’s degree, which he completed in 1963.

The Horton family established the Maurice R. Horton, Sr., Emerging Leader Scholarship in 2012 through the Henderson Foundation. The scholarship is awarded annually to an incoming freshman from Clark or Jefferson County.

Henderson’s Black Alumni Chapter started the Maurice R. Horton Awards Ceremony in 2018 where African American graduates receive a medallion to wear during commencement.

JOHN AND MELISSA DAVIS ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP FOR LIBERAL ARTS STUDENTS

Henderson Foundation is excited to announce the John and Melissa Davis Alumni Scholarship, a $50,000 endowment for junior and senior students majoring in the liberal arts.

THE ENDOWMENT is made possible by a generous gift from Melissa and the late John Davis, two 1972 graduates of Henderson State University. Melissa and John had strong ties to the theatre department—spending many hours both onstage and backstage.

John earned a BSE in English/philosophy and was the editor of the first Proscenium literary magazine. Melissa earned a BA in history/ library science. Influential professors were Dr. Bill Gentry, Bob Greene, John Barton and James Durham.

“We are grateful for this amazing new scholarship endowment, which will support students studying liberal arts for decades to come,” Tina Hall, interim executive director of Henderson Foundation, said. “Melissa and John spent their careers teaching young people to think critically, and this gift is a lasting legacy to their life’s work.”

The Reddies kicked off the home opener with a 55-7 win over Northwestern Oklahoma on September 11. The day began with a recognition of the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and presentation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Scholarship. Henderson Foundation hosted 205 Reddies for an Alumni Tailgate Party, and Showband alumni participated in pregame and halftime performances.

GREATER HOT SPRINGS ALUMNI CHAPTER ENJOYS A DAY AT THE RACES Members of the Greater Hot Springs Alumni Chapter hosted a Day at the Races on April 23, 2021. Approximately 40 alumni enjoyed the afternoon at the Oaklawn Jockey Club in Hot Springs, Ark., and raised over $2,500 to support their chapter scholarship.

REDDIES GATHER FOR COOKOUT, TRAVELERS BASEBALL GAME More than 150 alumni and friends gathered at DickeyStephens Park in North Little Rock, Ark., on May 16, 2021 for a cookout and to cheer on the Arkansas Travelers. This event was a great opportunity to gather with fellow Reddies for the first time in more than a year. A group spanning from recent graduates to Golden Reddies enjoyed a beautiful day at the ballpark.

 Delta Zeta sisters, Susan Cooley (‘82) and Beth Wyatt (‘85, ‘90), are just as close now as they were during their college years.  Some good stories and laughs are shared by this group of Reddies who are enjoying a chance to catch up while enjoying the game.  From Golden Reddies to recent graduates, this group of alumni stayed until the very end catching up with old friends and making new friends with fellow Reddies.
