INTRODUCTION

Hello!

My name is Hannah Spielberg, and I am a second year Interior Architecture student at The University of Kansas. I completed this semester remotely, making use of softwares like Revit, InDesign, Photoshop, and Fresco for design, as well as Miro, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams for Studio meetings and critiques. Our semester focused on medical and clinic design. We integrated ideas of safety and inclusivity into our projects, while beginning to learn ADA requirements, as well as considering human factors in our designs. My portfolio showcases my digital development, partial clinic renovation, and final full clinic renovation completed in Fall 2020.

PARTIAL RENOVATION PROJECT SUMMARY

The design project is an urban based Primary Healthcare Clinic. The clinic will be located on the 14th floor of a highrise near 875 North Michigan Avenue, formally known as The John Hancock Center. The care clinic has capacities at 1,500 patient beds, and will contain separate areas reserved for several functions. These will include public spaces like waiting rooms and restrooms, as well as private areas for patient rooms, consultation spaces, and offices. The clinic’s design will be influenced by ideas of spa-like design to make patients comfortable, as well as an increase in efficiency for physicians through use of proper circulation design. The care of this facility relies on preventative care, and sees patients on an appointmentonly basis. They will provide a variety of services including checkups, vaccinations, screenings, and injury/illness care. The patient to physician relationship is very important and it is crucial that the healthcare worker is knowledgable of the patients current and past medical histories.

FINAL RENOVATION PROJECT SUMMARY After designing the partial renovation of the primary care clinic located in Chicago, I was to then create a full renovation. I took into account the site of the space amongst the bustling city’s entertainment hub, Michigan Avenue. The clinic is a general practice office, seeing patients by appointment only, and includes services such as wellness visits, physicals, vaccinations, screenings, as well as sickness and injury care. GOALS My goal was to solve a problem. Privacy is something so sacred, yet often disregarded in the healthcare system. To combat the common malaise patients may feel when invaded with questions upon entrance to a clinic, or the discomfort of being surrounded by many others, during what should be a personal experience, I wanted to leave the decision of each slice of privacy up to the individual. To create spaces of comfort and retreat through geometric screening, and close attention to aspects like: Where patients wait, who they speak to, and making sure everyone experiences their own personal retreat.

CONCEPT To address the common lack of privacy in healthcare settings, allowing patients to create their own comfortable environment based on seating choice, and sensory details like audio and visuals through the use of screens, lighting, and overall aesthetics. CONCEPT DIAGRAM

SITE

Adapt a custom experience for each patient, patients decide their levels of privacy and interaction.

Produce a warm feeling in patients through genuine and natural interaction with staff members, patients feel heard.

Create a welcoming and inclusive clinic, a space for everyone. All genders, races, and ages.

Induce an autherntic feeling that patients have never experienced before in a medical setting, excite and distract.

Laurel Day is a common user and loves the clinic location, but she finds that sometimes she gets confused navigating the busy city. For patients like Laurel, a layout with clear circulation was very crucial to the design. Since there are many clinics in the urban setting, there needs to be something to set it apart. The space’s intricate and alluring design does the job of making local patients like Laurel come back again for the experience and care.

Sarah Johnson

Sarah Johnson is an example of a patient that requires more privacy. Sarah is a student at IIT and lives in South Chicago. She values her privacy and takes comfort in knowing her clinic is downtown so it is less likely she will see anyone she knows. Sarah appreciates the areas of comfort throughout the space, including the consultation room and the extra waiting room, which offer both audio and visual privacy while she attends her 15 appointment.

Paul Smith is one of the doctors on the site. When Dr. Paul arrives to work, he checks in with the team of nurses and administrators in the staff lounge. This space is perfect for an employee like Paul to chat in since it is private and contained. He sometimes works long hours at the clinic; therefore, he appreciates utilizing the comfortable lounge for his breaks and meals.

Sam is an 8 year old boy who is visiting the clinic with his mother. Sam is autistic and requires his spaces to remain familiar. He can often become distressed from fluorescent lights and loud noises, so his mother appreciates that he is put in a private exam room area with audio privacy, as well as complimenting lighting and furniture with simple textures.
