I don’t know how different my life would’ve been had she not made the choice to care for me, and I’m happy

The San Jacinto Valley Con gressman, Dr. Raul Ruiz, is one dedicated to his constituents. Ask any veteran or member of a veteran's family in our communi ty and it will be difficult to find any of them who would disagree. Staff Sergeant Ronnie Imels, a member of Hemet's American Legion Post in Hemet, was laud ed by the good Congressman at a recent breakfast meeting at the Legion Hall and blushed as the red strips of our flag trying to hide his humility at the honor. The occasion was to credit Ronnie's assistance in help ing Ruiz pass through the House and Senate and on to the White House for President Biden's sig nature. The week leading up to Biden's signature was a big lift for the President, who has not been getting all the credit he de serves. The Republican Leader ship in Washington tried every way possible to drown the bill, but it was a day for the Veter ans and no question about it.

Happens During A DUI Arrest

In most driving under the influence (DUI) cases, police will pull motorists over because of a traffic violation or signs of impairment. Often, a stop is legal as long as police have reasonable suspicion or reasonable cause to be lieve you have violated the law.If authorities had no reasonable justification for pulling you over, you could bring a motion to suppress. This can result in the case being thrown out. You will also need the help and guidance of an experi enced DUI lawyer to help you achieve a favorable outcome.During a DUI stop, you will be asked if you have been drinking. Typically, most would give an un derestimation of what they have drank. Once police get confirmation that you have been drinking, they will of ten investigate further. Also, if authorities have reason to believe there is incriminating evidence in side your vehicle, they can search it even if they don't have a warrant. Generally, they can also look inside your vehicle if you permit them to do so. Officers who suspect you are driving under the in fluence will often confirm their suspicions through roadside tests. Some tests include preliminary alco hol screening (PAS) tests and field sobriety tests (FSTs).All50 states have "im plied consent" laws. This requires that you submit to chemical testing if you have been lawfully arrested for DUI. The test is done to measure the amount of alcohol or drugs that are in your system. If you refuse the testing, you will likely face conse quences that include fines, license suspension, and installation of an ignition interlock device (IID). In other states, refusing the testing can result in a sep arate criminal conviction. If authorities determine probable cause to arrest you, you will be cuffed and taken to the police station or local jail. Typically, your driver's license will also be taken. Peace in Your Time

Bliss initially escaped but returned to try and save his wife. Both ended up per ishing in the inferno. After his death, those who went through his surviving lug gage found these words to a new song he had just writ ten: “I will sing of my re deemer, And His wondrous love to me; On the cruel cross He suffered, From the curse to set me free.” Life is short and often unpredictable and the reali ty is that life is hard. Some times it’s really hard! But what the Christian life of fers us isn’t a perfect life, but peace and contentment in the midst of difficulty. Our goal isn’t to have a life that is trouble-free, but to live a life in which we respond to every difficulty with faith. Forget your troubles, Come on get happy. You better chase all your cares away. Shout hal lelujah, Come on get happy. Get ready for the judgment day.” Sound familiar? That’s the first verse to the song, “Get Happy,” made famous in 1950 by Judy Garland. It’s a happy, up-beat tune for sure - with words about an often allusive emotion! At first thought, hap piness and contentment should be something that comes naturally for us. They shouldn’t be things we have to work for, think about, or purchase. Unfor tunately, it just doesn’t work that way. We have choices and although many peo ple allow circumstances to sway their emotions, it’s ab solutely possible to be hap py and content regardless of what’s going on in our lives. But we are pretty much an “if-then” society. If it’s well with my job, then it’s well with my soul and I’ll be happy. If my kids are behav ing and my spouse is good, then it’s well with my soul and I’m content. If my doc tor says I’m healthy, then it’s well with my soul and I’m good to go. But honest ly, that’s not real life, is it?! Things can get tough. We can lose our jobs, our teens can crash the car, and we can fight with our spouses! Can we still be okay? It’s our choice!Horatio Spafford was a successful lawyer in Chica go in the 1800’s. He and his wife Anna had four daugh ters and a son. In 1870, his son died from scarlet fever, and just a year later the great Chicago fire hit, killing hundreds and destroying many of Spafford’s proper ties. The Spafford’s decided to take a break and travel to Europe, but just before leaving, Horatio was de tained with business. Anna and his daughters traveled on ahead, but the ship car rying them collided with another vessel and sank. All four of their daughters died - only Anna survived. Of the 307 passengers, 226 drowned. When Anna reached England she wired her husband the following message: “Saved alone.” While sailing to meet up with his wife following the accident, Horatio was noti fied as his ship passed near the spot where his daugh ters perished. Horatio, heartsick, returned to his cabin and poured out his heart to God. Here are some of the lines he penned: “When peace, like a riv er, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul.” “Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, Let this blessed as surance control. That Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for Contentmentsoul.”has been described as being in a state of “peaceful happiness.” Paul tells us in Philippians that he had “learned to be content in all situations.” Contentment, he’s say ing, isn’t automatic - it’s a process. And, by the way, Paul wrote this while im prisoned in a Roman jail around 62 AD, and was later beheaded by the Ro mans. Now - here’s the rest of our story. A few years af ter Horatio wrote the words to “It Is Well,” Philip Bliss set it to the music we know and love today. But in 1876, while traveling by train to a crusade with his wife, a bridge collapsed and Bliss’s trainplunged seventy feet down into a ravine. Even before the wooden cars slammed to the bottom, they were on fire from the kerosene heaters.

former actress made headlines in Britain on Tuesday with com ments made during an interview with U.S. mag azine The Cut. In the in terview published Mon day, the duchess said it’s not easy to “forgive” when asked if there was room for forgiveness between her, Britain’s royal family and her own family. She also referred to Harry’s strained ties with his fa ther, Prince Charles. “I think forgiveness is really important. It takes a lot more energy to not forgive,” she said. “But it takes a lot of effort to forgive. I’ve really made an active effort, especial ly knowing that I can say anything.”Meghan, 41, and Harry, 37, have been in a tense relationship with Brit ain’s royal family since they stepped away from royal duties and left the U.K. in early 2020, citing what they said were the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media.

The timeline laid out by the Justice Depart ment made clear that the extraordinary search of Mar-a-Lago came only after other efforts to re trieve the records had failed and that it result ed from law enforcement suspicion that additional documents remained in side the property despite assurances by Trump representatives that a “diligent search” had accounted for all of the material.Italso included a picture of some of the seized documents with colored cover sheets in dicating their classified status, perhaps as a way to rebut suggestions that whoever packed them or handled them at Mar-aLago could have easily failed to appreciate their sensitive nature.

Asked about Meghan’s privacy lawsuit against a British tabloid, The Cut — part of New York Mag azine — said the duchess spoke about the terrible impact of “toxic tabloid culture” on both her and Harry’s“Harryfamilies.saidto me, ‘I lost my dad in this pro cess.’ It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision,” she told the magazine.Aspokeswoman for Meghan later clarified that the duchess was re ferring to losing her own estranged father, Thomas Markle, and saying that she hopes this does not happen to Harry and his father. The couple have signed deals with Spotify and Netflix, and the first of fering, a podcast featur ing Meghan as a host in conversation with celeb rities, has just launched.

Since their move to Cal ifornia, where they are now settled with their two young children, they have publicly discussed their unhappiness with the roy al family. In a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, Meghan spoke about racism within the monarchy and Harry said Charles had stopped taking his calls.

Sens. Debbie Staben ow, D-Mich., and John Boozman, R-Ark. have proposed a bill that would give the regulatory au thority over Bitcoin and Ether to the Commodities Futures Trading Com mission. Stabenow and Boozman lead the Senate Agriculture Committee, which has authority over CTFC.InJune, Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., proposed the Responsi ble Financial Innovation Act, which would create legal definitions of digital assets and virtual curren cies; would require the IRS to adopt guidance on merchant acceptance of digital assets and chari table contributions; and would make a distinction between digital assets that are commodities and those that are securities.

POLITICAL BRIEF

Monday, the Feder al Bureau of Investigation warned that criminals are more frequently exploiting vulnerabilities on certain decentralized finance plat forms to steal cryptocur rency.Several major legislative proposals were offered in Congress this year as well.

ERIC TUCKER | AP NEWS T he Justice Depart ment says classi fied documents were “likely concealed and removed” from a storage room at for mer President Donald Trump’s Florida estate as part of an effort to ob struct the federal inves tigation into the discov ery of the government records.TheFBI also seized boxes and containers holding more than 100 classified records during its Aug. 8 search of Mara-Lago and found classi fied documents stashed in Trump’s office, ac cording to a filing late Tuesday that lays out the most detailed chronol ogy to date of months of strained interactions between Justice Depart ment officials and Trump representatives over the discovery of government secrets. The filing offers yet another indication of the sheer volume of classi fied records retrieved from Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida. It shows how investigators conducting a criminal probe have focused not just on why the records were improperly stored there but also on the question of whether the Trump team intentional ly misled them about the continued, and unlawful, presence of the top se cret documents.

AP NEWS | CONTRIBUTED A House oversight sub committee asked regula tors and industry leaders on Tuesday to explain what they are doing to stop cryptocurrency fraud and other scams perpetrated onIllinoisconsumers.Rep. Raja Krish namoorthi, head of the Economic and Consum er Policy subcommit tee, asked leaders of the Treasury Department, Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commis sion, and Federal Trade Commission for more information on the steps they are taking to curb the growth of fraud and consumer abuse linked to cryptocurrencies.Theinquiries come as the cryptocurrency market has seen immense volatil ity, as bitcoin lost nearly half its value at one point this year and other crypto currencies fell even more.

Five of the biggest cryp tocurrency exchanges were also sent inquiry letters, requesting documents on company policies regard ing the removal of fake ac counts.Areport on the impacts of cryptocurrencies and other digital assets on fi nancial markets and illicit finance is expected to be released in the coming weeks. In March, President Joe Biden issued an execu tive order calling for sever al agencies to look at ways to regulate digital assets and gave them 180 days to doOnso.

DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I met and started dating 10 years ago. After about four years, during a very turbulent and toxic time in our relationship, I found out I was pregnant. When I told him, his response was very cold, and we separated. I terminated the pregnancy, as my life was in shambles and I had no way to even carry a child to term. We reconciled after a year and now have a happy fam ily with our son and another on the way. A woman he had been seeing during that time became pregnant, and her son looks identical to my boyfriend’s childhood pic tures. I have never talked to him about this. But I find it very painful to think that one day my children and the child of the woman will learn of each other through ancestry testing or some other way. Should I speak with him about my suspicion and fear of the pain for our children? Should I consult a therapist to try to cope with this fear before addressing him or try to move past it on my own?

As for Ms. Cheney’s lik ening herself to Abraham Lincoln, I have seen, at the National Museum of Health and Medicine, the bullet that killed him and fragments of his skull. I’m no life coach, but I wouldn’t call following in his footsteps a particularly upbeat career goal.

Last year the University of Virginia Center for Politics issued an unnerving re port in which 41 percent of Democrats and 52 percent of Republicans “somewhat agree” that red and blue states should secede from the Union and form separate countries. Eighteen percent of Democrats and 25 percent of Republican respondents “strongly agree.” Thus seces sion is one of those subjects where each party’s extremists are de facto allies, like forsak ing the First Amendment or provoking every educator and librarian in America to resign.Mynephew used to play a video game in which he gave digital haircuts to bears. That is less absurd than founding two new separate “blue” and “red” countries. The party leanings of states can be flu id. Colorado, for instance — it’s almost as if a secret cabal of tech millionaires shoveled a mountain of cash into turn ing a Republican state into a Democratic one. The federal government owns almost 50 percent of the land out West, so how to divvy it up with out antagonizing thrifty New Englanders? What would happen to swing states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania? Do they form a third Republic of WishyWashy?Somewhere around 40 percent of us do not live in the state where we were born. The ability to move from one state to another is not only an essential freedom that Liz Cheney should defi nitely look into; it is also an economic imperative. How much of Florida’s economy is New Yorkers and Midwest erners waiting around to die? Moreover, interstate migra tion is a foundation of our arts and culture. Pittsburgh’s Billy Strayhorn wrote “Take the A Train” after following Duke Ellington’s subway di rections to Harlem. “This is the story of the United States,” said T Bone Burnett. “A kid walks out of his home with a song and nothing else, and conquers theAworld.”pollof more than 8,000 Americans released by the University of California Davis Violence Prevention Research Program and the California Firearm Violence Research Center found that half of the respondents agreed that “in the next sev eral years, there will be a civil war in the United States.” First of all, yikes. Second, how would bringing Shiloh to the suburbs even work? Full-blown wars tend to get bogged down in geog raphy pretty quickly. The arc of George Washington’s command of the Continen tal Army can be told largely from the banks of rivers. A topographic map of Afghan istan now looks like a proph ecy.Yes, the 2020 Electoral College map gives the im pression that there are still dependable, contiguous re gions of this continent with natural or psychological boundaries akin to the Ma son-Dixon Line of yore. But the county election results maps tell a messier story of who we are and where we live. More Californians than Texans voted for Donald Trump. And even Richmond isn’t Richmond anymore — now that the city removed all the Confederate monuments from Monument Avenue, it’s just a bunch of Joe Biden voters driving past a statue of the tennis star Arthur Ashe.

DEAR FEARING: Discuss this with your boyfriend privately, at a time when you are both calm and relaxed. If you feel you need the emotional support of a ther apist in order to work up the courage to do that, by all means do so. Because of DNA testing, the scenario about which you’re concerned may very well happen, so it’s wise to be prepared in advance. But please don’t worry about causing your children “pain.” If they aren’t made aware of the other child, their reaction is more likely to be one of surprise. Because DNA “reunions” are becoming more common, it’s less of a scandal than it was years ago.

Ms. Cheney might pull off being our generation’s Millard Fillmore — every girl’s dream. In choosing majority rule as her life’s work, she has landed on the only either-or issue in the United States (aside from pineapple on pizza).

polling on the growing support for seces sion echoes that 1850s-style tripartite political divide.

The fires are burning up the country; on the other hand; the country is overcome with floods. The problem is, the two should be meeting and providing us with serenity but it isn’t working out that way.We have been listening to the powers that be in the oil and gas industrypump, pump, pump. When it comes to water, it always “costs too much.” Baloney. Which is more import ant: profits or survival? I watched on TV this after noon and saw a 10 or 12foot pipeline being trans ported by rail from one place to another.

Hence the intoxicating ap peal of these continuing fan tasies of partition and civil war: We are stuck with each other. We are stuck. With each other. Perpetually.

BRING WATER TO THE DROUGHT AND FIRES, and enjoy weather fit for civilization. Let Spring be Spring and Fall preparing us for Christmas. If the greatest congress and pres idency in the world can’t do that, then we are surely doomed for destruction. It doesn’t have to happen. Voters demand leaders to lead. - EMBARRASSED IN WISCONSIN DEAR EMBARRASSED: People sometimes let their dental health lapse because they don’t see what others do when they speak or smile. Your husband may have a fear of dentists, or think you are nagging him for the pleasure of it. If his damaged tooth is ignored much lon ger, he may wind up losing it. You might be able to get your point across if you film him with your cellphone while he’s speaking, laughing, etc., and show him what you and others have been see ing. (If that doesn’t help, suggest that because of the up surge in COVID variants, he wear a mask to the event.)

DEAR ABBY: My husband has terrible oral hygiene. He brushes his teeth at night before going to bed but won’t brush them in the morning. It’s disgusting. About a year ago, he chipped a front tooth. I have asked him over and over to please get it taken care of. My requests are being ignored. The damage has now become much worse and it’s really noticeable. It doesn’t bother him. Nice teeth have always been important to me. When I try to talk to him about it, he walks away. It’s to the point that I no longer want to go anywhere with him because it’s embarrassing. We have an event to go to soon and I’m dreading it. This may seem trivial, but I see the dentist on a regu lar basis and he hasn’t gone in years. It isn’t the money; he has no problem spending money on his toys. Please tell me how to handle this. It’s causing some major is sues between us. Am I asking for too much?

Midpandemic, I stood in line for hamburgers be tween a snarling blonde who chewed me out for wearing a face mask and a high school classmate’s brother keen to talk about the Times linguis tics newsletter writer John McWhorter. Both of my neighbors ordered French fries cooked in the same vat of oil. Where is the demarca tion line in that scenario — the milkshake machine?

Our country is dying from drought and flood and unless we connect the two we won’t have a coun try in which to be worried about costs. To say we can trans port people to MARS but can’t lay water pipelines or build peripheral canals from the flood lands to the drought-driven states is as phony as a $3 bill. If any of these naysayers saw 15 cents of profit, in it those canals and lines would spread out from the South and Northeast to drought-stricken western states like a Black Widow Spider’sAroundweb. the world, drought-stricken areas are surviving via piped water or desalination. The United States of America can send billions of dollars in arms abroad but can’t even take care of our own needs. An old adage about the Brooklyn Bridge sounds better than our excuses. To the Governor of California, state legislature, President Biden, the Democratic Congress - it is time to stop acting like Donald Trump is the only political issue in the coming elections. To win, do something that helps all, not just a few.

Liz Cheney said in her Wyoming concession speech that she takes courage from Ulysses S. Grant’s resolve to turn his army south toward Richmond in 1864. Mention ing that Abraham Lincoln lost House and Senate rac es “before he won the most important election of all,” she announced that her new political action committee to resist election denial is called the Great Task, a reference to the last line of the Gettysburg Address. How far will she take her Civil War analogies? If she’s running in the 2024 presidential primary, “Let’s burn down Atlanta” might not be an optimal vote-getter in Fulton County.

What’sCOLUMNWith

DEAR ABBY ADVICE

The Texas Republican Party, ever aspirational, put secession from the United States into its most recent platform. And yet seces sion is technically illegal — thanks to Texans. In 1869, in Texas v. White, the Supreme Court ruled secession un constitutional and declared the Union “perpetual.”

The idea was to be per manently chastened by the Civil War, that the relief of emancipation and reunification would always be tempered by the shock of 600,000 corpses. And yet “civ il war” has lately become one of those zeitgeist phrases that rattle around the internet, like “quiet quitting” or “Pete Da vidson.”After the F.B.I. searched Donald Trump’s home for archival documents, a white nationalist proclaimed, “Civ il war is imminent.” These whiffs of civil war from peo ple more enthralled with Fort Sumter than Appomattox Court House are, like the re-emergence of the word “secession,” escapist fantasies of reliving the four years this country was two countries, officially estranged.

circa 1850 was trapped in a trilateral predicament in which Presi dent Fillmore, presiding over a Unionist center aiming to prohibit slavery’s extension into the new western terri tories, was caught between a far left and a far right, some abolitionists being almost as keen on secession as the slaveholders — an outcome that would have benefited theRecentlatter.

- FEARING THE FUTURE

Defending the premise that, after a fair election, the legitimate Electoral College winner becomes the presi dent-elect — an idea so basic I literally learned it in first grade, when the kids who preferred Gerald Ford in our mock election just sucked it up and congratulated Jimmy Carter’s gang of 6-year-olds — is our most important is sue and explains the ginnedup rumors of war, especially since Ms. Cheney’s nemesis on the topic is something of an attention-getter. On every thing else, the United States in 2022 feels more 1850 to me thanThe1861.country

The investigation be gan from a referral from the National Archives and Records Adminis tration, which recovered 15 boxes from Mar-a-La go in January that were found to contain 184 documents with classi fied markings, including top secret information.

During that visit, the document says, Trump’s lawyers told investiga tors that all the records that had come from the White House were stored in one location — a Mara-Lago storage room — and that “there were no other records stored in any private office space or other location at the Premises and that all available boxes were searched.”

The purpose of the Tuesday night filing was to oppose a request from the Trump legal team for a special master to review the documents seized during this month’s search and to return to him certain seized prop erty. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon is set to hear arguments on the matter on Thursday. Cannon on Saturday said it was her “prelim inary intent” to appoint such a person but also gave the Justice Depart ment an opportunity to respond.OnMonday, the de partment said it had already completed its review of potentially privileged documents and identified a “limit ed set of materials that potentially contain at torney-client privileged information.” It said Tuesday that a special master was therefore “unnecessary” and that the presidential records that were taken from the home do not belong to Trump.

The investigators were permitted to visit the storage room but were not allowed to open or look inside any of the boxes, “giving no op portunity for the gov ernment to confirm that no documents with clas sification markings re mained,” the Justice De partment says.

Justice Department fil ing does not resolve a core question that has driven public fascination with the investigation — why Trump held onto the documents after he left the White House and why he and his team re sisted repeated efforts to give them back. In fact, it suggests officials may not have received an an swer.During a June 3 vis it to Mar-a-Lago by FBI and Justice Department officials, the document states, “Counsel for the former President offered no explanation as to why boxes of government re cords, including 38 doc uments with classifica tion markings, remained at the Premises nearly five months after the production of the Fifteen Boxes and nearly oneand-a-half years after the end of the Administra tion.”That visit, which came weeks after the Justice Department issued a subpoena for the re cords, receives substan tial attention in the doc ument and appears to be a key investigative focus. Though Trump insist ed again Wednesday that he had declassified the documents at Mar-a-La go, his lawyers did not suggest that during the visit and instead “han dled them in a manner that suggested counsel believed that the docu ments were classified,” the Justice Department said.FBI agents who went there to receive addition al materials were given “a single Redweld ments,”containingdouble-wrappedenvelope,intape,thedocuthefilingstates.Thatenvelope,accord ing to the FBI, contained 38 unique documents with classification mark ings, including 16 docu ments marked secret and 17 marked top secret.

LIZ Photo S oaring real estate val ues mean many home owners are awash in equity — the difference between what they owe and what their homes are worth. The average-priced home is up 42% since the start of the pandemic, and the average homeowner with a mortgage can now tap over $207,000 in equity, according to Black Knight Inc., a mortgage and real estate data analysis compa ny.Spending that wealth can be tempting. Proceeds from home equity loans or lines of credit can fund home im provements, college tuition, debt consolidation, new cars, vacations — whatever the borrower wants. But just because some thing can be done, of course, doesn’t mean it should be done. One risk of such borrowing should be pretty obvious: You’re putting your home at risk. If you can’t make the pay ments, the lender could foreclose and force you out of your house. Also, as we learned during the Great Reces sion of 2008-2009, hous ing prices can go down as well as up. Borrowers who tapped their home equity were more likely to be “un derwater” — or owe more on their houses than they were worth — than those who didn’t have home eq uity loans or lines of credit, according to a 2011 report by CoreLogic , a real estate dataOthercompany.risksare less obvi ous but worth considering.

Some people who don’t have long-term care insurance instead plan to borrow against their home equity to pay those bills. Clearly, the more you owe on your home, the less equity you’ll have for other uses. In fact, a big mortgage could preclude you from getting a reverse mortgage at all. To qualify, you either need to own your home outright or have a substan tial amount of equity — at least 50% and perhaps more.

Using your home equity to pay off much higher-rate debt, such as credit cards, can seem like a smart move. After all, home equity loans and lines of credit tend to have much lower interest rates.Ifyou end up filing for bankruptcy, though, your unsecured debts — such as credit cards, personal loans and medical bills — typically would be erased. Debt that’s secured by your home, such as mortgage and home equity borrow ing, typically isn’t.

THE DEBT It’s rarely, if ever, a good idea to borrow money for pure consumption, such as vacations or electron ics. Ideally, we should only borrow money for pur chases that will increase our wealth : a mortgage to buy a home that will ap preciate, for example, or a student loan that results in higher lifetime earnings. If you’re planning to borrow home equity to pay for something that won’t increase in value, at least ensure that you aren’t mak ing payments long after its useful life is over. If you’re using home equity to buy a vehicle, consider limiting the loan term to five years so that you’re not facing big repair bills while still paying down the loan.

Home equity loans typ ically have fixed interest rates and a fixed repayment term of anywhere from five to 30 years. The typical home equity line of credit , meanwhile, has variable rates and a 30-year term: a 10-year “draw” period, where you can borrow money, followed by a 20year payback period. While it is true that children are our future, teachers that interact with them daily in their classrooms are their present and what they learn will determine their future success. Par ents who have students at tending the Soboba Tribal Preschool and the Noli Indian School on the So boba Indian Reservation, got to hear firsthand what this year’s expectations are during Back-to-School Nights held Aug. 24 and 26, Donovanrespectively.Post, who is the preschool’s Director and Noli’s Principal, said it was great to be able to have in-person events for the parents to visit the classrooms and meet their children’s teachers face-to-face. The past two years’ back-to-school nights were held virtually due to the pandemic’s re strictions and precautions. Back for her second year teaching the kindergart ners, Sierra Vivanco is looking forward to the new school year which in volves collaboration with Noli students and teachers. Tashina Miranda Ornelas, Culture Department Co ordinator/Instructor, said her students will be do ing many more hands-on cultural activities with the young children. His 7-year-old brother Aid en had been a student at the preschool and said it prepared him well for San Jacinto Valley Academy where he attends. “They have an open-door policy here which is a lot different from most schools,” Joseph Sr. said. The preschool’s office manager, Amber Lopez, helped organize the eve ning’s event that welcomed parents to the campus to visit the classrooms, chat with the teachers and learn about several of the part ners that assist throughout the school year. Represen tatives from Soboba Fire and Department of Public Safety greeted everyone and talked a little bit about the safety programs they would be introducing to each class. New Program: Breakfast in the Classroom

SJUSD | CONTRIBUTED A new “Breakfast in the programClassroom”isbring ing many positive results at Park Hill Elementary School in the San Jacinto Unified School District. Nutrition Services staff are working closely with the school principal, faculty and staff to fine tune details in this pilot program and hope to expand the service to all elementary schools in the Thedistrict.program is support ed by research which in dicates that students who eat breakfast in their class room are more focused and perform better aca Thedemically.program utilizes stu dent “breakfast ambassa dors” who take an insulated cooler with the day’s break fast for the entire class from the school’s cafeteria to the classroom. It only takes about 10-15 minutes at the start of each school day and teachers, who of ten eat with their class, also incorporate daily social emotional learning strat egies as well as announce ments, reading, music and journaling into a quiet start to the school day. School Principal Amy Rose is excited about creating a space for staff and stu dents to build community within the classroom. She reports that students’ com plaints about being hungry at school have declined and students are more ready to learn; in part because stu dents are not using recess time for breakfast – but are able to run and play. In ad dition, students are learn ing leadership skills, coop eration and manners. The timing of the new program is a big help to families who are adjusting to modified bell schedules and find it difficult to feed their chil dren before the school’s 7:30 am start time. San Jacinto Unified, which offers free breakfast and lunch to all students, saw an immediate increase in breakfast consumption at the school. Nutrition Services Director Tammy White stated, “providing healthy meals for students is a top priority and we are very pleased to find in novative ways to partner with our schools to help students be successful. We look forward to the pos sibility of replicating this initiative at other schools soon!”
