Riverside County reports 6 more Monkeypox cases, total now 171 CNS | CONTRIBUTED

iverside County reported six new confirmed or probable monkeypox cases Monday, raising the overall number to 171. Jose Arballo, a spokesman for the Riverside University Health System, provided the updated numbers, which can be found at www.rivcoph. org/mpx/Data — a monkeypox dashboard that shares a breakdown of cases in the county with cityby-city data and more. Last Monday, the number of cases in the county was 128, up from 87 the previous week. The county’s first probable or confirmed case in a female was reported last week. A total of 84 probable or confirmed monkeypox cases have been reported in Palm Springs, making up almost half of the county’s aggregate count of 171,
according to the latest RUHS data. The county declared a public health emergency in early August to focus attention on the virus. State and federal officials also proclaimed emergencies. According to health officials, the monkeypox vaccine can prevent infection if given before or shortly after exposure to the virus. The county is working with community partners to expand eligibility for the two-shot vaccines to include at-risk individuals, and to set up treatment sites with Tecovirimat — an antiviral medication used to treat orthopoxvirus infections such as monkeypox. Riverside County has distributed 75% of its allotment of vaccine doses to DAP Health, Eisenhower Medical Center, Borrego Health and RUHS’ EIP clinic in the Coachella Valley from the county’s
limited supply, Arballo told City News Service. He said the county received 5,413 doses of the two-dose JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccine, enough for 2,706 people, before the 75% was distributed to the Coachella Valley. The other 25% was kept for RUHS efforts such as large-scale events and post-exposure prophylaxis, Arballo said. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the California Department of Public Health advise that the vaccine be prioritized for high- risk and exposed patients. Gay and bisexual men are at increased risk of contracting the virus, according to the CDC. The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a “public health emergency of international concern.” As of last Friday, a total of 3,291 monkeypox cases

were confirmed in California — the highest of any state — while nationwide, the aggregate count was at 17,432, according to the latest CDC data. Monkeypox is generally
spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact, resulting from infectious rashes and scabs, though respiratory secretions and bodily fluids exchanged during ex-
tended physical episodes such as sexual intercourse can also lead to transmission, according to the

or the thousands of children and teenagers in the foster care system, there are many hurdles that limit their chance of graduation. In 2021 the California Department of Education reported that the statewide average high school graduation rate for students in foster care is an alarming 55% and only 10% will go
onto college. As a part of its mission to address poverty, hunger, and health disparities throughout communities in the Inland Empire, Family Service Association developed a scholarship opportunity to help graduating high school students, cared for in the foster care system, pursue a post-secondary degree. The pilot program was funded by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for students in
Riverside County. Seventeen students were awarded a scholarship of $1,250 to help offset the cost of attending a community college, trade school, or university. The winners shared their stories about the challenges of being in foster care and the impact that trusted adult supporters made in their lives. One of the scholarship awardees, Lesslie Cuevas, shared the impact that her

high-school counselor had on her life. “My school’s administrator was a true blessing in disguise. She made me a part of her family and helped changed my life’s trajectory for the best”. Another scholarship winner, Lilith Barajas, shared the impact that her aunt made in her life by taking her in and supporting her since childhood. “Although being in foster care is hard mentally, my aunt manages to make me
laugh… I know taking care of four children is hard, especially when two of them aren’t yours biologically. Despite all of the court and social worker visits, she still manages to stay on track and keep us happy and healthy. I don’t know how different my life would’ve been had she not made the choice to care for me, and I’m happy I

Some congressmen do their jobs, Habit Burger Grill Signs Seven others just get re-elected Unit Deal in Riverside, California RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR REPORTER
The San Jacinto Valley Congressman, Dr. Raul Ruiz, is one dedicated to his constituents. Ask any veteran or member of a veteran's family in our community and it will be difficult to find any of them who would disagree. Staff Sergeant Ronnie Imels, a member of Hemet's American Legion Post in Hemet, was lauded by the good Congressman at a recent breakfast meeting at the Legion Hall and blushed as the red strips of our flag trying to hide his humility at the honor. The occasion was to credit Ronnie's assistance in helping Ruiz pass through the House and Senate and on to the White House for President Biden's signature. The week leading up to Biden's signature was a big lift for the President, who has not
been getting all the credit he deserves. The Republican Leadership in Washington tried every way possible to drown the bill, but it was a day for the Veterans and no question about it. THE PACT ACT The Pact Act had a long road and heavy load coming to fruition. Prior to Ruiz's election to the House, it was Congressman Mark Takano who carried the banner but had a sincere and honest passion for the veterans. The PACT ACT makes it easier for many survivors to receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC); VA will be contacting survivors who were previously denied DIC benefits and may be newly eligible under the PACT ACT. You do not need to wait for the VA to contact you to submit a claim.

Known for its signature Charburgers and incomparable fast-casual dining experience, popular Southern California-based The Habit Burger Grill announced a recently-signed franchise agreement with existing operator, Stan Singh, to add seven restaurants and two food trucks to his North Riverside portfolio. The development agreement makes history as Singh becomes the largest Habit Burger Grill franchisee in the company’s system. After purchasing five Habit Burger Grill restaurants in June 2021 and successfully running the restaurants, Singh’s exponentially increasing success led him to purchasing seven additional existing restaurants and two Habit Burger Grill food trucks

The team’s handson guidance and proven business model have allowed me to grow my portfolio beyond what I expected,” said Singh, who also owns and operates 20 KFC restaurants throughout California. “I’m eager to open even
