American Legion Post 53 Installs Officers 2021-2022 RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR WRITER

O

n Juneteenth, 2021, the American Legion Post 53 of Hemet installed new officers for both the auxiliary, Legionnaire’s and SAL Officers for the coming year. The event began around eleven a.m. with a buffet luncheon/dinner that would honor any restaurant kitchen. That was followed by a tremendous amount of socializing and discussing past and present events of the Post. Among the honored guests was Jerry Chase, President of Cloverlane Foundation. For those who don’t know Jerry, he does not reside in Hemet, but he has contributed heavily, both financially and personally, to the welfare of Veterans here and throughout Southern California. At one P.M, the ceremonies began with the Auxiliary proceedings first on the agenda. The new officers installed were: PRESIDENT: Jeri Johnston 1ST VICE PRESIDENT: Brandy Rowe 2ND VICE PRESIDENT: Valerie Vandever CHAPLAIN: Irene Gabriel SECRETARY: Sally Imel TREASURER: Gloria Alvarez HISTORIAN: Charlene Booth PARLIAMENTARIAN: Cathaleen McCoy SERGEANT AT ARMS: Charlene Both ASST. Clergy Corner: The Wrecking Ball

fter a tumultuous year and a half of virtual and hybrid learning and an unavoidable hiatus in traditional school programs and activities in the Hemet Unified School District, this year’s graduating seniors finally felt some sense of normality as they participated senior awards ceremonies, the first since spring of 2019. Five lucky seniors from the district’s comprehensive high schools – Hemet High, West Valley, Tahquitz, Hamilton High and Western Center Academy -- received the Hemet Education Foundation’s (HEF) generous $5000 scholarship, while a sixth student from the Academy of Innovation, one of the district’s alternative schools, walked away with a $500 HEF scholarship. The $5000 HEF Scholarship recipients were Alize Acevedo, Hamilton; Malia Arrocena, Tahquitz; Cambria Beard, Hemet High; Elijahua Contreras, Western Center; and Lailah Dodd, West Valley. Judith Almaraz of the Academy of Innovation was the $500 scholarship winner. Hamilton High School graduate, Alize Acevedo, has already been accepted to the Pre-Nursing program at Cal Baptist University in Riverside, with the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse or midwife. Acevedo says she is a “very determined and hardworking person and going to college and receiving this scholarship will mean so much to me and my parents.” Hamilton English teacher, Rebekah Mortensen Young, says Alize “is conscientious with her work and applies her strong work ethic to her studies.” An avid cheerleader and one of a set of triplets, Malia Arrocena from Tahquitz High School knew early on that it

Grocery Outlet Changes Management in Hemet RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR WRITER

W

e have all been cautioned at one time or another to not judge a book by its cover, or just because you never heard of it doesn't mean it is sub-standard. Both ideas fit The Hemet Grocery Outlet in the mini-mall at San Jacinto Street and Florida Avenue on the Eastside of Hemet. The Grocery Outlet in Hemet has been there for as far back as I can remember. The company was established in 1946 and today claims 300 thriving stores. They stand up against Ralph's, Kroger or Safeway any day of the week. I doubt a lot of people know anything about their origins or products. Their patrons sure know about the quality of their product. I was in the local store last week when one of the cashiers told me it would be the last day of the current owners. Why, I asked. It seems that the current owners Darryl and Barbara

Salkele are retiring. Did that mean the store was shutting down? No, and here's why. Grocery outlets are not individually owned. It is a partnership company. Folks who would like to operate a food business can apply and join up with the Grocery Outlet Company by taking over an existing store or perhaps open one where there is a need. Hemet, for instance, recently opened a new store at the busiest corner in Hemet, an area that is growing with great speed - Florida Avenue at Sanderson on the west side. I arranged an interview with the new owners, curious to know why we would have two stores in Hemet and what made them attractive to the community. Chad and Leslie Trask, the new husband and wife management team, were anxious to tell me all about themselves, the store and the company. They have been with Grocery Outlet for only 3 years. Why, I asked, did you choose Hemet?

Chad has some relatives here but that was not his reason. He and his wife were located in Camarillo (Ventura County) prior to relocating in Hemet. If you buy for a big name company, whether it be Levi Straus or

Kroger Grocery Company you pay for all that expensive advertising. That can become quite expensive in a year's time. That's not the way it is with Grocery Outlet. Chad ex
