Is Joe Males a Hemet City Councilman or Is He Not? RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR REPORTER

n November 3, 2021, Joe S. Males was elected to the Hemet City Council in the Fourth District of Hemet, replacing Bonnie Wright, who vacated the seat on July 9, 2020, and moved out of State. However, she did not “formally� submit her resignation until July 28, 2020.

The deadline set by the City of Hemet for filing of nomination papers was originally on August 6; however, the deadline was extended by the City of Hemet to August 12, 2020. A Statement of Contest of Election was filed by Kenneth J. Graff, a resident of District 4, claiming that Mr. Males missed the original filing date and thus, was disqualified to run for nor to occupy the seat he currently holds as Mayor pro tem as a councilman for the City of Hemet.

The City extended the filing date on the assumption that Ms. Wright was an incumbent, which she was not, having resigned. Under those circumstances, there would not have been a problem, according to Mr. Graff ’s suit filed on December 23, 2020, in Riverside Superior Court.

Further, Mr. Graff claims that Males was not registered to vote in District 4 on July 20, 2020, when nomination papers were issued to him and thus, not eligible to hold office as City Council Member in District 4 at the time the election was held.

The deadline set by the City of Hemet for the filing of nomination papers was originally August 6, 2020, but was extended by the City to August 12, 2020, and according to the claims of Mr. Graff, that was six days past the deadline for filing, thus preventing Males from being a legitimate candidate for the seat vacated by Ms. Wright.

Former City Councilwoman, Lori Van Arsdale states in her declaration that she checked the voter registrations for Riverside County and discovered Joe Males, as of October 30, 2020, had a residence at 1129 Hornbeam Court, Hemet CA 92545 (in District 5), and yet he updated his voter registration on August 10, 2020, to show that he lived in District 4.

This seems to be that Mr. Males lived in District 4 as registered in August 2020 or did the registrar of voters fail to update his records, or did he violate a law by filing late based on information from the City of Hemet that he presumed to be accurate - that is the extension

of time after Wright left her seat.

Further research developed shows that Mr. Graff ’s attorney Patricia A. Madrid in Anaheim Hills, CA, has the same last name as Miguel Madrid, Mr. Males opponent in the November election.

Coincidence?

As I recall, Ms. Van Arsdale had some issues about residency when she first ran for office in Hemet.

Ruiz Highlights Vaccination Challenges Facing Underserved Communities Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-36) has been sounding the alarm on the need for a vaccine distribution plan that prioritizes and implements health equity for months – long before a vaccine was even approved for use in the United States. On January 2, 2021 during the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee entitled, “No Time to Lose: Solutions to Increase COVID-19 Vaccinations in the States,� Rep. Ruiz laid out continued challenges facing communities like the East Valley in getting vaccines. “Prioritizing high-risk groups on paper is not effective if those individuals are not able to actually access the vaccine,� said Dr. Ruiz in the hearing. “Underserved, hardworking communities lack clinics and providers. Many people in my district don’t have access to broadband to schedule a vaccine online. They don’t have hours to spend on the phone trying to get an appointment. They don’t have transportation to the vaccine site. They don’t have access to information in a language they understand to help them navigate the system.�

Activists to host car caravan demanding guaranteed health care in California Local activists in association with the California Nurses Association to host a local car caravan urging state legislators to pass California Guaranteed Health Care for All (CalCare), similar to Medicare for All on the national level.

This event will be part of the nurses’ kickoff day of action with car caravans in 23 cities across California. Participants will practice physical distancing, mask wearing, and other Covid safety guidelines.

Lewd Conduct, Sexual Battery On December 11, 2020, about 6:40 p.m., a lewd conduct, sexual battery incident occurred at a retail store on the 32000 block of Temecula Parkway in the city of Temecula. An unidentified adult male was caught on security cameras fondling himself and following female customers around the retail store. The male subject eventually sexually assaulted a female customer before leaving the store. That incident was also caught on security cameras.

The investigation is currently on-going and the male subject has not been identified. If anyone has information in regards to this incident, or the male subject, they are encouraged to call Investigator Cornett at the Southwest Station at 951-696-3000.

Attempt Murder

Further investigation revealed the suspects to be 25-year-old San Jacinto resident Joshua Rivera and 24-year-old San Jacinto resident Jose Monrial.

Rivera was arrested on Saturday, December 19, 2020 and booked for his involvement in the incident. Later that day, personnel from the San Jacinto Station, with the assistance of Riverside County Special Weapons and Tactics Team served a search warrant at Monrial’s residence in the 800 Block of Minor St., San Jacinto. Monrial was not located during the service of the search warrant.

On Sunday, January 31, 2021, at approximately 7:09 P.M., a deputy responded to the 800 block of Minor St., San Jacinto, in reference to a medical aid call for service. While at the location he located Monrial, he was arrested and booked for his involvement in the incident.

Deputy Involved Shooting RIVERSIDE COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT | CONTRIBUTED

n January 29, 2021, at 12:40 pm, Deputies assigned to the Palm Desert Sheriff ’s Station responded to the 39000 block of Washington St., in the city of Thousand Palms, regarding an assault with a deadly weapon call.

Prior to the “911� call being made, the victim ran into a local business and reported that her estranged husband was armed with a rifle and trying to kill her.

The deputy arrived and attempted to contact the suspect who was sitting inside a red Ford pickup truck. The suspect backed up his pickup truck and fled the area at a high rate of speed. At that time, a vehicle pursuit began. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in the area joined in the pursuit. The vehicle pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle collided with an uninvolved vehicle in the area of Jefferson St. north of Avenue 48, in the city of La Quinta. At that time a deputy / officer in-

During the pandemic, Amazon was one of the few retailers to benefit as shoppers stayed clear of malls and shopped from their phones. On the same day Amazon announced Bezos would step down, the company reported making a record profit in the last three months of 2020, and its quarterly revenue shot past $100 billion for the first time.

Bezos' riches have also swelled: His stake in Amazon is currently worth about $180 billion. For years he stayed behind the scenes, running the company. More recently, he sometimes stepped into the spotlight, showing up at movie premieres and Hollywood parties.

In 2019, he announced he was divorcing Scott in a tweet, just before the National Enquirer published a cover story saying Bezos had an affair with a former TV host. Scott received a stake in Amazon after the divorce worth nearly $40 billion at the time. She has pledged to give away half her fortune to charities.

As Amazon has grown, so has scrutiny. Amazon and other tech giants have enjoyed light-touch reg-

ulation and star status in Washington for decades, but calls for greater regulation are growing. A report by the House Judiciary Committee in October called for possibly breaking up Amazon and others, making it harder for them to acquire companies and imposing new rules to safeguard competition.

Bezos is one of the last founders of a big tech company to still be CEO. The founders of Google, Oracle and Microsoft have all stepped down from the top job of the companies they created. Facebook is still led by co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Jassy, Bezos’ replacement, is a longtime Amazon executive, having worked at the company since 1997. The cloud-computing business he runs powers video-streaming site Netflix and many other companies, and it has become Amazon's most profitable business. “He’s deeply steeped in technology and a very seasoned executive in his own right,� Gartner analyst Ed Anderson said.

But he will also face many challenges. “Amazon’s size makes some industries uncomfortable, some governments uncomfortable, and Andy Jassy will have to deal with the consequences,� Anderson said. “That will be some of the new era of his leadership.�

Some Democrats are now starting to whisper about the need for a backup plan should voters decide the first-term governor needs to go.

Newsom's slide from the early days of the pandemic points to the pain facing leaders, particularly Democrats who avoided early political backlash, as virus fatigue takes hold, vaccines remain elusive and voters stop blaming the Trump administration for their trouble.

A poll released Tuesday by the Public Policy Institute of California found just over half of Californians — 54% — approve of how Newsom is handling the job, suggesting the recall effort still has an uphill climb. But that’s down from 65% in May, at the height of his approval. Among Democrats, he’s dropped from 86% support in May to 71% now. About half of independents support him and

sional leaders also paid their respects.

The arrival of Sicknick’s remains at 9:30 p.m. was solemn, with dozens of Capitol Police standing at attention as his urn was carried up the Capitol steps. There was a viewing period for Capitol Police overnight, and lawmakers were to pay tribute at a ceremony Wednesday morning. A ceremonial departure for Arlington National Cemetery was planned later in the day.

Members of Congress remain shaken by the attack and are grappling with what it means not only for the future of the country, but for their own security as elected representatives. While lawmakers were united in denouncing the riots, and Trump’s role in them, the parties are now largely split on how to move forward.

House Democrats impeached Trump a week after the attack, sending a charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate, where Republicans are unlikely to provide the votes necessary to convict him. At the same time, the building has been cut off from the public, surrounded by large metal fences and defended by the National Guard.

Sicknick, 42, of South River, New Jersey, enlisted in the National Guard six months after graduating high school in 1997, then deployed to Saudi Arabia and later Kyrgyzstan. He joined the Capitol Police in 2008. Like many Capitol Police officers, he often worked security in the Capitol itself and was known to lawmakers, staff and others who passed through the building’s doors each morning.

There are still questions about his death, which was one of five as a result of the rioting. As the mob forced its way in, Sicknick was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher, two law enforcement officials said. He collapsed later on, was hospitalized and died. The officials could not discuss the ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Investigators are also examining whether he may have ingested a chemical substance during the riot that may have contributed to his death, the officials said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced last week that Sicknick would lie in honor, which is reserved for a select

few. In a joint statement they said his heroism “helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that the Congress was not diverted from our duty to the Constitution.”

His sacrifice, they said, “reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve.”

Pelosi said in a letter to colleagues on Tuesday that the Capitol Police “demonstrated extraordinary valor” on Jan. 6 and urged members to pay their respects.

She has also encouraged members to take advantage of trauma resources available to congressional employees.

She said protecting the Capitol and the lawmakers who work there is a “highest priority” and that there will be a need for extra money to do so. During the assault,

many of the insurrectionists called out for members, including Pelosi. They also targeted Vice President Mike Pence, who was in the building to preside over the electoral count.

“The insurrectionist attack on January 6 was not only an attack on the Capitol, but was a traumatic assault targeting Members,” she said.

Sicknick is only the fifth person to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda, a designation for those who are not elected officials, judges or military leaders. The others who have lain in honor were John Gibson and Jacob Chestnut, Jr., two officers who were killed in a 1998 shooting at the Capitol; civil rights leader Rosa Parks, who died in 2005; and the Rev. Billy Graham, who died in 2018.

Bill Burton, a Democratic communications strategist and former spokesman for President Barack Obama who lives in Southern California, said Democrats nationally have hammered a “follow the science” message when many Americans are more immediately worried about getting their kids back in school and reopening their businesses.

“There’s some disconnect between public policy and what regular people are experiencing in their lives,” he said.

For Newsom, the trouble started in November when he was caught dining out at the posh French Laundry restaurant for a lobbyist's birthday as he told Californians to avoid gatherings, reinforcing perceptions that he is out of touch with people.

California's messy vaccine rollout and a fresh round of business closures just before Christmas sparked further criticism.

In the new year, Newsom drew fire for initially refusing to release the data he was using to determine

which regions of the state should be locked down, then abruptly reversed course last week and lifted stay-at-home orders statewide.

Editorial boards for the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle, two of the state's major newspapers, sharply criticized his decision and questioned his motives.

The decision “raised questions about whether the governor was truly ‘following the science' as he so often says, or was influenced by growing public discontent about the pandemic restrictions," the Los Angeles Times editorial board wrote.

Even some of Newsom's traditional allies criticized him.

Assemblywoman Laura Friedman, a Democrat from the Los Angeles area, was among those who took to Twitter to express surprise and frustration at Newsom's sudden turnaround. She and others said they'd been given no headsup by the administration, making it impossible to explain the new rules to confused community members and business leaders.

“If we don't know in ad-

vance, we can't help with that messaging," Friedman said. “And then we all look dysfunctional."

Still, she said she supports Newsom and doesn't want to see him recalled.

Among voters, there is evidence of frustration. Recall organizers say they've collected 1.3 million of the 1.5 million signatures needed by mid-March to put the recall on the ballot.

State officials had verified 410,000 as of early January.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials are investigating threats of death and violence against the governor, his family and his businesses, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Mike Trujillo, a Los Angeles strategist who worked for one of Newsom's Democratic opponents in the 2018 governor's race, said Newsom can't afford to take hits from Democrats with a potential recall looming. The governor's decision to reverse the stay-at-home orders could alienate members of his own party who have been taking the pandemic extremely seriously, Trujillo said.

“If you're Team Gavin, your political operation

has to be ‘make every Democrat happy,' and that's not been his operation style since Day One as governor," Trujillo said.

He added: “If the lawmakers are willing to speak out, imagine how the base feels."

Sonja Diaz, founder of the Latino Politics & Policy Initiative at UCLA, said that young workers and people of color are bearing the brunt of the state's coronavirus surges. She said the Trump administration deserves much of the blame for the disjointed response, but that Democrats need to stay focused on the priorities of vaccinating people and providing economic help rather than bending to critics on the right.

“This isn't really just on one governor," she said.

Newsom last week called the idea that he's making decisions based on politics “nonsense," but he's otherwise sidestepped commenting on the recall.

Beyond Faulconer, several other Republicans and a tech billionaire are considering bids if the recall happens, though none are particularly well-known to voters. Most of California's

Republican mega-donors remain on the sidelines.

For now, many Democrats doubt whether the recall will make the ballot. Still, they are looking back to 2003, when voters recalled Gov. Gray Davis, for lessons as they debate whether its worth standing behind Newsom or finding an alternative. In that election, the Democratic lieutenant governor ran, a move that some Democrats say helped Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger win. But others say the party can't take the chance of not having a credible alternative.

Dan Newman, Newsom's political strategist, said he's not worried about the party turning on Newsom and that facing the ire of voters is part of the job.

“People are frustrated and upset, understandably.

The pandemic has caused suffering and disruption and it makes it a challenging time to be a public official," Newman said. “It's part of what you sign up for — fires and pandemics and vaccine development are not all under your control, but you're held responsible and that's part of the deal, fair or not."

It’s also the year Bob and I moved to the Hemet Valley to run a juvenile facility out in Castile Canyon, behind the Soboba Indian Reservation.

The 320 acre ranch came to us complete with buildings, furniture, frozen food and barrels of wild rice. But, alas, just three weeks into enjoying our meals with the tasty rice we found it was actually white rice with tiny, little weevils!

So gross! But no one died so I guess we were none the worse for wear! It would have been great though, had we been able to sift out those pesky little buggers, as we ended up throwing away quite a lot of “wild rice!”

It reminds me of when

Jesus told Peter that Satan had asked permission to sift him like wheat. Being an agricultural society, Peter knew exactly what that meant - a vigorous shaking process to separate the dirt and chaff from the grain.

It’s basically getting rid of the bad and keeping the good.

So why in the world would Satan desire to sift Peter if he knew he would come out the better for it? The way I see it, Satan planned to sift Peter so violently and so brutally that he would be left disheartened and completely fallen in his faith. Don’t forget that the savage beating and crucifixion of Jesus took place right after this.

But the sifting process worked and Peter came through stronger than ever! Sifting time just confirms God is ready to do something new - out with business as usual. As someone once said: “If you want to be shifted, you gotta be sifted.”

But I believe this sifting process will bring a greater divide between those who merely attend church and have compromised with the ‘spirit of the world’ under a banner of tolerance and collusion, and those who truly call Jesus Lord and Savior! God is making everybody get on a side

- no more chaff - and our choice is between righteous God or blood-thirsty Baal.

I have always felt the zeal in the Battle Hymn of the Republic (written in 1861) and find its third verse strikingly well-timed for us in 2021: “He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgement seat; Oh, be swift my soul, to answer Him; be jubilant my feet; our God is marching on!”

Our feet should be swift - racing to get that sifting job done and here’s why - and trust me - it’s exciting!! Ready? God hates evil. He fiercely hates it.

There’s a concept from the Bible that reveals: “What Satan meant for evil, God will use for good.” Why is this exciting news for us?

Satan has designed evil for America and its people, but countering that, God is getting ready to move across our nation as He sifts our hearts, and do something extraordinarily good! It’s imminent and it’s exciting!!

Mario Murillo has written spot-on about this very topic: “It’s time for you to settle your spirit behind an historical fact. God has always dealt with evil in America. It’s not by accident that “wokesters” have tried to destroy our histo-

It is not simply the people of America that God loves, it is the idea of America. It’s time to stand our ground and get fired up! Check out this intriguing dialogue between two warriors in Tolkien’s book, The Return of the King. One warrior asks another, “What do you fear?”

JoAn Lee Vreeland April 25, 1934 - January 26, 2021 JoAn Lee Gordon Vreeland died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. She was hospitalized and being treated for COVID. She was 86 years old.

Raised in Tucson, Arizona, JoAn attended Tucson Senior High School and the University of Arizona and married her high school sweetheart, Walter Vreeland, who predeceased her in 2007. They were married for 53 years. While Walter built a career in life insurance, JoAn raised a family of five children in Placentia, California. Her household was remarkable for its love, laughter, and enduring connection.

JoAn’s professional pursuits were usually based on the needs of her family and close friends. She became a licensed art agent in order to assist her brother-in-law, who was a talented artist. For a while, at the request of a close friend and neighbor who owned a local franchise, JoAn managed her friend’s business. Still, JoAn’s enduring passion was her family. Her boundless love and positive energy was a gift to all who knew her.

After both of them retired, Jo and Walt moved to San Jacinto, California.

Having a love of luxury cruises, they traveled the world over. Together they explored the furthest reaches of the planet, including such diverse destinations as Russia, Hong Kong, Cairo, Bora Bora, and many others. When not traveling, Jo and Walt devoted their time to lovingly indulging their seven grandchildren.

In 2017, JoAn moved to an assisted living, memory-care facility in Hawthorne, California, to be closer to her family. JoAn is survived by one daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Hers was a legacy of love. Our universe shines brighter from her touch. She will be missed.

resident Joe Biden and a group of 10 Senate Republicans have offered competing proposals to help the United States respond to the coronavirus pandemic and provide economic relief to businesses and families.

The president is meeting with the senators on Monday at the White House in what press secretary Jen Psaki described as “an exchange of ideas” and not a forum for Biden to “make or accept an offer.” Meanwhile, Democratic leaders in Congress are laying the groundwork for taking up Biden’s proposal in the coming weeks.

The topline numbers are this: Biden’s plan calls for an additional $1.9 trillion in federal spending.

The 10 GOP senators are calling for about $618 billion in federal spending.

The aid would come on top of the $900 billion coronavirus package that Congress passed in December and the $2.2 trillion package passed in March.

A look at the major differences: AID TO INDIVIDUALS Biden is proposing $1,400 checks for individuals earning less than $75,000. The amount would

be $2,800 for couples earning less than $150,000.

The 10 GOP senators seek $1,000 checks. They would go to individuals earning less than $40,000 a year and would begin phasing out with a hard cap at $50,000 a year. The payment would increase to $2,000 for couples earning up to $80,000 and phase out with a hard cap at $100,000 a year.

AID TO STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS Biden’s framework would send $350 billion to state and local governments to allay service cuts and keep police, fire and other public-sector workers on the job.

The Republican senators did not include any direct relief to state and local governments in their proposal. There has been strong resistance in the GOP to such assistance, with many arguing it would reward states for poor fiscal management.

s they say in the newspaper world, “You could have mailed it in.” That’s what happens when everything runs like a river just drifting along in the summer breeze. Tuesday night’s San Jacinto City Council Meeting was another love fest. Every item on the Agenda was rubber-stamped okay and so it went.

There was a roll call, followed by invocation, pledge of allegiance and into the meat of the session.

The following items were all approved as presented.

1. Consent calendar.

2. Approval of previous minutes dated 01/21/2021.

3. City Council received and filed the Treasurer’s Report for the month ending December 31, 2020.

4. City Council accepted the Local Road Safety Plan submitted by the Engineering Department.

5. City Council approved the plans and specifications for the Ramona Expressway Median Art Project, Phase 1; Awarded the construction contract to Universal

MINIMUM WAGE HIKE Biden’s plan includes a gradual increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. The plan from GOP senators does not address the federal minimum wage, which now stands at $7.25 an hour.

CHILD CARE Biden is proposing $40 billion in federal spending for child care.

Within that amount, $25 billion would go to an “emergency stabilization fund” to help child care providers offset expenses necessary to reopen or stay open. An additional $15 billion would go to a long-standing block grant program that subsidizes child care expenses for low-income families with children under age 13. Biden is also calling for increasing tax credits to help cover the cost of child care.

t. San Jacinto College (MSJC) invites the public to attend and participate in several virtual events during its annual celebration of Black History Month in February.

The monthlong series of free events kicks off on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The events are coordinated by the MSJC Umoja program and several groups at the college, including A2MEND, Sankofa, and Ujima.

Positive Investments Secures $36 Million Refinancing for Apartment Properties HANNAH MADANS | CONTRIBUTED

C

apital One Financial Corp. has provided $35.7 million in loans to Positive Investments Inc. to refinance 17 apartment properties in Southern California.

The apartments are located in Covina, El Monte, Lynwood, Pacoima, Torrance, and Whittier, as well as in San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties.

The properties range in size from five to 54 units.

Arcadia-based Positive Investments invests in multifamily, office and hotel assets.

Capital One Vice President Andrew Kwok worked on the Freddie Mac loan.

“Times like these underscore the value of a longstanding relationship with an experienced borrower,” Kwok said in a statement.

“Our working relationship with Positive Investments gave us a jumpstart as we began underwriting each of these loans.”

The loans all have a fixedrate and five-year term.

APARTMENT PROPERTIES: The River Rock Apartments in Hemet are included in the refinancing.

They will be amortized over 30 years.

“Capital One’s expertise in financing multifamily projects of all sizes is clearly evident in this transaction,” Srinivas Yalamanchili, a principal at Positive Investments, said in a state-

ment. “After completing a nine-property transaction with Andrew’s team earlier in the year, I had every confidence in their ability to execute on the financing of this 17-property portfolio — and they really came through.”

In November, the company gave a $20 million Freddie Mac loan to refinance a 36-unit apartment community in Culver City

that wrapped construction in 2019 and had a stabilized tenant base by August. The client was a local developer, and the loan is for 10 years with five years of interest-only payments.

Also in November, Capital One provided $13.3 mil-

lion in Fannie Mae loans, including a $9.1 million loan for the 42-unit Rodney Apartments in Los Feliz and a $4.2 million loan for the 42-unit Crosscreek Apartments in Van Nuys. Both were 10-year, fixed-rate loans.

Soboba Honored by School District

Park University Fall 2020 Graduates Announced Park University announces its Fall 2020 graduates from the University’s flagship Parkville Campus, as well as the Downtown Kansas City (Mo.), Independence (Mo.) and Lenexa (Kan.) campuses. The list of graduates also includes fall online graduates worldwide and graduates from the University’s other campuses across the country not previously announced this year.

Park hosted a virtual all-University commencement ceremony on December 12, featuring keynote speaker Anthony Melchiorri, host, co-creator and co-executive producer of Travel Channel’s “Hotel Impossible” series of shows, and a 1990 Park graduate and U.S. military veteran. The graduates were originally scheduled to participate in an in-person ceremony that day at the Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence, Mo., but the event was cancelled earlier in the fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The University had 607 students eligible to graduate — 260 students received a master’s degree and/or a graduate certificate, and 347 students received a bachelor’s degree, associate degree and/or undergraduate certificate.

SOBOBA BAND OF LUISEÑO INDIANS | CONTRIBUTED

he San Jacinto Unified School District recently honored the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians, the Soboba Foundation and a Soboba Tribal Member. At its Jan. 19 school board meeting, Deputy Superintendent Sherry Smith, on behalf of the district’s American Indian School, Family and Community Liaison Delia Vazquez and the Board of Trustees, presented the recognition certificates.

Su’la Arviso is a sophomore at San Jacinto High School and current president of the school’s Four Directions Native American Club.

She was singled out for her leadership in honor and celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

“Su’la is part of the reason we took a group of our San Jacinto leaders to visit the Soboba Reservation and learned from the Soboba Cultural Department on the unique aspects of their culture,” Smith said. “This included, but wasn’t limited to food, traditions and government. Su’la contacted the Soboba Tribal Council and made the proposal for the visit and she contacted the Cultural Department to organize it.”

SJUSD Superintendent Dave Pyle said it was his first “official” field trip since joining the team in San Jacinto and was thankful for the opportunity.

“I couldn’t think of a more important place and such a wonderful time to visit and to hear from not only one of our students but many of our members,” he said.

Su’la has been with the Four Directions club for two years, serving as its secretary when she as a freshman. However, she founded the club at Estudillo Elementary when she was in fifth grade.

San Jacinto High School and the district, to help non-native and Native American students expand their knowledge about the Native American culture/problems and to prove Native American kids can make a difference within the community.

“Personally, my favorite goal is the first one; it lets me make that connection with the school district and the kids here,” Su’la said. “Because not a lot of people know of the Native culture, I’m just proud to share it and share who I am.”

Working closely with the high school’s 35 club members, Su’la has helped keep things active despite the inability to have regular in-person meetings or large events.

“The most recent activity we had was a handful of us were picked to help prepare Thanksgiving food boxes for those in need within the district,” said Su’la, 15. “I am currently trying to organize a day where the younger Four Directions club members (at other schools) can join us and ask questions or just get to know each other.”

Jesse Spriggs teaches Social Science at San Jacinto High and is serving as the club’s advisor for his third year. He said the past year has made it very difficult to execute any activities for any clubs.

and successful marketing effort, the MSJC bonds attracted more than $346 million of investor orders during the order period on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2021. All bonds sold the morning the market opened. Of the $346.1 million investor orders, $343.0 million orders were placed by 33 institutional investors and $3.1 million orders placed by individual retail accounts.

THE POLITICAL NOTEBOOK From the Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto

THE CORNERSTONE OF DEMOCRACY It has been a request for many months that we wear a mask and socially distance ourselves in order to prevent contracting Covid 19 and to prevent the spread of this virus to others. Every time when leaving the house, I think “got mask?”. Why do I care about adhering to this precaution? I think it comes from something that I heard long ago.

A question posed by an instructor during a college class, must have been Political Science 101, was “what is the cornerstone of democracy?” Everyone offered opinions such as Law and Order, cooperation with others, or good government leadership. Granted, there are many things that contribute to democracy but identifying a single, foundational cornerstone is not easy to condense down to a single property. His answer was “self-discipline”.

In simple terms, self-discipline is the control over personal feelings and actions. In this context it refers to those behaviors that preserve family, community, and country. So, am I to understand that the strength of our government, the defense of our country, the application of law and order, and the humanity of our healthcare system all depend upon how I manage my own behavior?

This idea is more than a pearl of wisdom, it is a golden nugget of understanding. I have been trying to rationalize this idea for a long time. This is not the discipline that is enforced in many countries around the world in autocratic countries. It is something that must originate from an individual’s ethical or moral personal realization. How I behave determines, to some degree, the success of family, community, and a functioning democracy.

Where does self-discipline come from? How is it developed?

Well, I am hardly qualified to talk expertly about this subject.

But I can share where I think my own sense of self-discipline arises from. It comes from family and the environment a person is raised in. It comes from educators and the models of behavior that they exhibit. We learn from our friends. When work life begins, we learn from colleagues and supervisors.

We do live in a society that is based in Christian ethics as well as the moral and ethical standards taught by other religions. I think we pick from the people found in these circumstances who would be best to emulate. We hope we choose wisely. It takes a long time to work on our self-discipline and develop a sense of personal character. It doesn’t work for everyone and doesn’t always work the way we would want for ourselves.

In these times of Covid 19, choosing to wear a mask, socially distance, and be cautious in all public circumstances fulfills my sense of self-discipline. Based on the scientific advice that I have heard through the media, self-discipline in this matter will protect the things that matter most to me. The safety of family, friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens.

This has been a round-about way of getting to the point.

We want our people to thrive and we want our democracy to thrive. Laws can punish the lack of self-discipline but that does not always instill the best behavior. It is hard to regulate self-discipline, but given the people I have observed through life, it can be inspired.

According to S&P, the AA rating reflects the district’s solid economic indicators, and healthy available funds ($38.6 million in its unrestricted general fund

and approximately $13 million in various funds as of June 30, 2020) equating to what the agency considers a solid 50.7% of total general fund expenses.

“We are thrilled to receive these ratings,” said Beth Gomez, Vice President of Business Services. “A stable outlook means that our rating agencies expect our rating to remain high. It’s good for the district, good for the taxpayers and good for investors.”

Biden seeks to boost vaccine supply Last week, the Biden administration announced plans to purchase another 200 million vaccine doses, 100 million each from Pfizer and Moderna. That brings the nation’s total order to 600 doses — enough for 300 million people — of the authorized, mRNA-based vaccines.

The U.S. also has an order for 100 million doses from Novavax, which announced Thursday its two-dose regime was nearly 90% effective in preliminary results, but only 49% effective in South Africa, where a new variant is raging. On Friday, Johnson & Johnson announced its vaccine — which requires only one shot — was 72% effective in the U.S. trial group, but only 57% effective in South Africa. The US also has also ordered 100 million doses of this vaccine, as well as 300 million doses from AstraZeneca.

The U.S. adult population is approximately 255 million, and vaccines are currently only available to those 16 and up. In other words, there should be enough for all adults by summer’s end — but not everyone is eager to sign up just yet. Here’s what the latest polls say: • 47% of Americans, surveyed in January, said they were eager for the vaccine or were already immunized, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation survey.

• A CNN poll, also in January, reports 66% of Americans would accept a vaccine right now.

• Gallup finds 65% were willing to take a vaccine in December and early January.

• The California Health Care Foundation finds that 71% of Californians, polled between November and January, were “definitely” or “probably” willing to take a vaccine, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

It’s likely that at least 60%, and likely many more, of people will need to be vaccinated in order for the country to reach herd immunity.

Biden is also setting more short-term goals. Over the next three weeks, the federal government will deliver a total of 10.1 million doses per week, up from 8.6 million. The president may also up his goal of 100 million doses in 100 days — which has

been criticized for being too low — to 150 million. Dr. Anthony Fauci has said the 100 million figure is a “is a floor, not a ceiling.”

Biden also plans to reopen the national health insurance marketplace HealthCare.gov, allowing people who lost their coverage along with their jobs to sign up, and to expand Medicaid access, since millions of Americans have lost coverage during the pandemic.

Of course, Biden’s orders cost money, and Congressional Democrats hope to vote soon on his $1.9 trillion pandemic relief plan that includes stimulus checks, unemployment benefits, and funds for schools and vaccination.

Variants versus vaccines in deadly race The virus is changing, which is a normal thing for a virus to do. But recent changes have created variants that scientists suspect could be more contagious or more deadly, as Brian Resnick explains at Vox. Three new variants to watch are those first detected in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil: • The UK variant appears to be more infectious, and it may be 30% more lethal, too. It’s now present in at least 26 states, and the CDC says it could sweep the nation by March.

• The virus from South Africa appears to be about 50% more contagious than the original virus. So far, it doesn’t appear to be any more severe. It’s been spotted in two people in South Carolina, who didn’t travel or know each other, suggesting local spread.

• The Brazil version was first detected in the U.S. on January 25, in a traveler who’d been to Brazil. The transmissibility and lethality of this variant is still unclear, but it’s led to a large surge in Manaus, Brazil. That city should have been at or near herd immunity — researchers estimated 75% of the population was infected last spring — raising the worrying possibility that the new variant is unchecked by existing immunity.

Discussing new variants with STAT, vaccine developer and pediatrician Paul Offit said, “Don’t worry yet.” But prominent epidemiologist Michael Osterholm

The South Africa variant is of particular concern because it seems to be only partially blocked by existing vaccines.

Antibodies from people who received an mRNA vaccine were able to stop this variant in lab tests, though only at high levels of antibodies, Kai Kupferschmidt reports in Science.

“The results don’t spell doom yet,” Kupferschmidt writes.

Vaccine-makers are already working on booster shots that could enhance immunity to these new variants. For the mRNA vaccines, it’s a fairly simple update, but the regulatory hurdles to testing and approving such a booster are uncertain, as Julie Steenhuysen and Michael Erman explain at Reuters.

Health departments struggle with vaccine equity Meanwhile, the U.S. vaccine rollout continues to fall short in reaching some of the most atrisk communities, with vaccination sites rare in neighborhoods dominated by people of color, and vaccination rates for Blacks lagging behind whites. The disparity persists even among health care workers.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom raised further concerns when he announced that moving forward, vaccine priority groups will be based on age, not occupation. Disability advocate Andy Imparato told the Los Angeles Times, “It sounds like it’s more bad news for people with disabilities” who may be younger but nonetheless vulnerable, or members of marginalized groups.

There are local efforts to address these equity problems.

For example, some cities are vaccinating homeless people, reports Amanda Coletta for The Washington Post. Religious organizations, nonprofits and community groups are also helping improve vaccine access by educating people about the vaccines and helping them set up appointments.

‘Free Speech for Me, But Not for Thee’ RICH LOWRY | COLUMNIST

L

ong a stalwart defender of the First Amendment, the American media is now having second thoughts.

For decades, it was a commonplace sentiment among journalists that freedom of the press was one of the glories of our system.

It helped to make the government accountable and to air diverse points of view -- even unpopular ones -- to be tested in the marketplace of ideas.

Media organizations were at the forefront of the fight to vindicate First Amendment rights, with The New York Times involved in two landmark Supreme Court decisions (New York Times Co. v. Sullivan and the Pentagon Papers case) and tended to rise as one against any perceived threat to their prerogatives and freedoms.

This advocacy has been sincere, although, if nothing else, journalists should be First Amendment purists out of a sense of self-interest. In a 2018 essay in

The Atlantic representing the bygone conventional wisdom, titled “Why a Free Press Matters,” the longtime newscaster Dan Rather noted, “As a working journalist, I know I have a stake in this concept.”

One would think so.

Yet, now journalists have lurched from finding a threat to freedom to the press in every criticism of reporters and news outlets by former President Donald Trump to themselves calling for unwelcome media organizations to be shut down.

They’ve become the thing they profess to hate -- closed-minded censors who want to stifle free expression, First Amendment be damned.

Perversely, the TV program and email newsletter of the top media analyst at CNN, Brian Stelter, has been a clearinghouse for such advocacy, whether it is demands to get right-wingers removed from social media or -- more astonishingly -- to keep conservative cable networks off the airwaves.

Stelter’s colleague, media reporter Oliver Darcy, tweeted about his effort to get cable companies to answer why they carry pro-Trump channels like Newsmax and One America News Network. “Do they have any second thoughts about distributing these channels given their election denialism content?” he asked on Twitter. “They won’t say.”

In the same vein, Washington Post columnist Max Boot drew a direct line between how we deal with foreign terror groups and how we should treat right-wing media organizations. “We need,” he wrote, “to shut down the influencers who radicalize people and set them on the path toward violence and sedition.”

Boot noted, approvingly, that the U.K. doesn’t have the equivalent of Fox News because regulators won’t allow it. The U.K. also doesn’t have a First Amendment, a small detail that might be worth considering if the point is to protect our freedoms rather than destroy them in a fit of ideological

vengeance.

A writer at the progressive publication Mother Jones argued for an advertiser boycott instead of regulatory action in a post called, charmingly, “It’s Time to Crush Fox News.”

A boycott wouldn’t violate the First Amendment like a direct crackdown on Fox and others.

Still, it would be private action undertaken in the service of a profoundly illiberal goal, running counter to the country’s culture of free speech.

All of this would be bad enough if it weren’t people who write and comment on TV for a living advocating it. But journalists have been moving in this direction for a while now, as Armin Rosen catalogues in a disturbing report for Tablet magazine.

The author, Steve Coll, who is no less than the dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, said last December, “Those of us in journalism have to come to terms with the fact that free speech, a principle that we hold sacred, is

RICH LOWRY | Courtesy photo. being weaponized against the principles of journalism.” The former managing editor of Time magazine, Richard Stengel, has written: “All speech is not equal.

And where truth cannot drive out lies, we must add new guardrails.”

And so its erstwhile champions are ready to retreat from strict adherence to the First Amendment to a new rule of “free speech for me, but not for thee.”

The defense team denied that Trump had ever endangered national security and disputed the Democrats’ characterization of his remarks and his role in the riot. When he told his followers to fight like hell, they said, he was talking about “election security in general.”

Trump, they said, was not attempting to interfere with the counting of electoral votes, only encouraging members of Congress to engage in the customary process of challenging vote submissions “under a process written into Congressional rules,” as had been done in years past.

“The actions by the House make clear that in their opinion the 45th President does not enjoy the protections of liberty upon which this great Nation was founded, where free speech, and indeed, free political

speech form the backbone of all American liberties,” the defense lawyers wrote.

Trump’s legal team also laid out a challenge to the constitutionality of the trial now that Trump is no longer president. Though that claim may not be resolved any time soon in the courts, it may nonetheless resonate politically.

Republicans have signaled that acquittal is likely, with many saying they think Congress should move on and questioning the constitutionality of an impeachment trial with Trump out of office. In a test vote in the Senate last week, 45 Republicans, including party leader Mitch McConnell, voted in favor of an effort to dismiss the trial over those constitutional concerns.

Su’la said participating in those events during Native American Heritage Month in 2019 was the most fun.

“Every Friday of November during both lunches, we either had Wayne Nelson and his singers or other bird singers come and sing/dance a couple songs for us,” she said. “Tekla Diaz, me and a couple girls I dance with put on a Fancy Shawl exhibition, which consisted of crow hop, double beat, straight step, and lastly round dance. At the end, students at the high school could come out and dance with us to a round dance song, since it’s the song of friendship.”

Spriggs said there are multiple reasons why he accepted the responsibility to advise the Four Directions club.

“First, and overall, I totally understand the hardships and atrocities suffered

by First Peoples; therefore, I would like the students to have a voice and feel included in society,” he said. “Secondly, I grew up with Native kids back in Northern Virginia where I was born and raised. These were my friends plus east coast school systems have a heavy curriculum in Native studies. Lastly, I earned my bachelor’s degree in sociology at California State University at San Bernardino. There I continue my studies of Native history with elective courses. In addition, I served as a professor’s assistant to Dr. James Fenelon who is of the Lakota Nation. He is not only a great mentor but a good friend as well. I knew that I was going to get involved with Native affairs once I started teach-

Su’la said she was proud to be publicly recognized for her efforts at the recent board meeting.

“Just seeing that the school district is trying to make that connection with their Native students and acknowledge our presence makes me even happier and prouder about myself and my culture,” she said.

She added that the club’s purpose is to advocate for Native American and any Indigenous students/people’s agendas and to offer social gatherings where students can immerse themselves in First People’s culture and student camaraderie. Any student is welcome to join the club.

“Su’la is very active outside of the club,” Spriggs said.

“I have witnessed her display great pride and talent in her cultural traditions.”

Her mom, Melissa Vera said, “She continues to make us proud with all she does.

We have no doubt that she will reach her goal to be on

Soboba Tribal Council one day as an adult.”

The Democrats wrote that the framers of the Constitution would not have wanted to leave the country defenseless against “a president’s treachery in his final days, allowing him to misuse power, violate his Oath, and incite insurrection against Congress and our electoral institutions” simply because he is leaving office. Setting that precedent now would “horrify the Framers,” the brief said.

“There is no ‘January Exception’ to impeachment or any other provision of the Constitution,” the Democrats wrote. “A president must answer comprehensively for his conduct in office from his first day in office through his last.”

She said that while this year’s event couldn’t be held in the same style as previous years with a long line of community volunteers unstuffing the bus filled with toys, Christmas carols blaring from loud speakers and hot cocoa for all guests, Soboba didn’t disappoint.

“They came out in force and helped us find an alternative way to impact and help our families,” Smith said.

Along with certificates of appreciation, she noted that a perpetual plaque will stay at the school board room and the years will be added as the partnership between Soboba and the district continues to deepen and strengthen.

“On behalf of the Tribe and the Foundation, we appreciate the recognition and the honor,” Vivanco said.

“It’s something we really enjoy doing – giving back to the community. The idea came out of our office to expand upon what we’ve done in the past and Andrew and the Foundation team really took off with it and you’ve seen the outcome. We are honored to be in a position to help out when we can. I know it’s been a trying year for everyone, and I know it just meant that much more for everyone to receive these meals at this time. It’s something we are pretty proud to participate in.”

Vivanco also thanked all the school district staff and volunteers that came out to help distribute the turkey dinners.

“There were hundreds out there helping and it made things that much easier,” he said. “I really appreciate it and I know the Foundation and Council appreciate the support while working together to make something like this happen and go so smoothly. It was a true community effort.”
