Biden wins Wisconsin, presidency still hangs in balance

ivision 33 of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), which serves the Hemet/San Jacinto valley and surrounding communities, recently awarded three $100 teacher grants to local educators.

Teachers in the Hemet, San Jacinto, Temecula, Murrieta, Menifee and Lake Elsinore school districts were notified in September that the first drawing would be held during Division 33’s virtual membership meeting on October 13th. Nearly 40 teachers applied for the grants, and the three winners were randomly drawn from the list of applicants.

Equine influenza outbreak killing Southern California burros

Retired Teachers Make a Positive Impact

An equine influenza outbreak has killed about three dozen wild burros in the inland region of Southern California and authorities expect the number to rise.

Horse owners are being urged to consult their veterinarians, get booster vaccines for previously vaccinated animals and move them away from fence lines in areas where wild burros frequent, Riverside County Animal Services said in a press release.

The deaths, which began in mid-October, have mostly occurred in the Reche Canyon area in the western foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains. About 500 burros live in the area 60 miles (97 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

Equine influenza is a highly contagious virus specific to horses, mules and donkeys.

It spreads rapidly through aerosolized droplets created by coughing or by contamination of surfaces, Animal Services said.

Most symptoms are respiratory but there are others including fever. Clinical signs are more severe in younger horses as well as in donkeys and mules, while older horses usually have milder illness, the agency said.

Experts say the virus can be spread on equipment, brushes, water buckets, clothing and hands.

State veterinarian Alisha Olmstead said owners should avoid traveling with their horses if they believe they’ve been exposed, and visitors with horses should not come onto their properties.

Animal Services said the public should avoid contact with the burros.

Suspect fatally struck by car after fleeing California scene A man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle Thursday was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene, police said.

The 35-year-old man, whose name has not been released, allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, police said in a news release.

The vehicle's owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car, authorities said.

As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander driving south, police said. The Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital.

The Outlander's driver was not injured and cooperated with police.

The city of Riverside is about 55 miles (88.51 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

Amazon buys old OC Register printing plant for $63M The Orange County Register newspaper's former printing plant has been bought by Amazon with the intention of converting it into a distribution center.

The 63-year-old building in Santa Ana is expected to be bulldozed and rebuilt into a new 112,485-square-foot (1,160 square meter) “last mile� distribution center serving Orange County, the Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

Amazon paid about $63 million on Oct. 19 to purchase the facility and 16.5 acres (66,773 square meters) of land along the 5 freeway, said Jack Haley, one of the property’s four listing agents.

The new warehouse would join another proposed one in Mission Viejo, where the online company is converting a recreational vehicle storage facility into another “last mile� distribution facility.

2 Arrested In Fatal Hemet Attack

wo men suspected of beating, attempting to abduct and ultimately killing a 36-year-old Hemet resident were behind bars Wednesday.

Alberto Franco, 24, of Hemet and Christian Anselmo Gomez, 43, of Homeland were both arrested Tuesday following an investigation by the Hemet Police Department.

Franco was booked into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of murder, attempted kidnapping and attempted carjacking. Gomez was booked into the same facility on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted kidnapping and being in

Gomez was being held in lieu of $2 million bail, while Franco was being held on $1 million.

According to Hemet Police Lt. Nathan Miller, at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, the suspects confronted the victim, whose identity has not been released, in an alley-

way in the 200 block of East Stetson Avenue.

Miller said the pair corralled and pummeled the man before he was able to break free and run to a nearby strip mall in an attempt to find cover outside a pizza parlor.

"The suspects chased the victim, cornered him ... and then one of them shot the

victim several times," the lieutenant said.

As witnesses called 911, Franco and Gomez allegedly jumped into a white SUV and sped away.

However, moments later, the vehicle slammed into a brick feature outside a residence in the 1400 block of South Palm Avenue, causing the SUV to become disabled, according to Miller.

He said patrol officers converged on the location and initiated a search for the suspects, which ended in the predawn hours Tuesday, when both were located hiding on Coral Avenue, where they were taken into custody without further incident.

A possible motive for the deadly shooting has not been disclosed.

Man Shot and Killed After Being Cornered by Two Individuals at Shopping Center in Hemet OSCAR FLORES | CONTRIBUTOR

36-year-old man was shot and killed at a shopping center in the city of Hemet after being chased by two individuals Monday evening, police said.

Officers responded to the 200 block of E. Stetson Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. after receiving a call about a man bleeding and being chased by two men, according to the Hemet Police Department. Soon after, another caller reported hearing gunshots and seeing a bloodied man fall to the ground and a white SUV seen driving

away from the area.

Investigators learned the 36-year-old victim was seen being punched and hit by two men in a nearby alley a few minutes before the first 911 calls, and somehow, the victim managed to get away from the attackers and made his way to a shopping center on E. Stetson before the two suspects cornered the victim near a pizza restaurant and shot him multiple times, said Hemet police.

The victim died at the scene.

At some point, the white SUV seen driving away from the area, crashed into a brick mailbox in the 1400 block of S. Palm

Avenue after the driver lost control, according to police. Officers found two suspects hiding nearby and took them into custody. Police say a weapon and other evidence of the crime was also found.

The identity of the victim was not immediately known. Detectives would like to talk to anyone who was in the area at the time of the crime.

CRIME BRIEFS RANCHO MIRAGE

Explosion On October 31, 2020, about 12:29 AM, deputies responded to the 70200 block of Highway 111, within the city of Rancho Mirage, reference an explosion. The Riverside County Hazardous Device Team along with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) responded to conduct the investigation. The investigation revealed that an explosive device placed inside a trashcan caused it to catch on fire. There were no injuries due to the incident.

POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE AND STOLEN VEHICLES INCIDENT DATE: November 3, 2020

On November 3, 2020 at approximately 2:20 A.M., a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy assigned to the Perris Station was conducting pro-active enforcement in the unincorporated area of Perris. He saw a suspicious vehicle hauling a trailer on a dirt road near the Riverside National Cemetery.

After conducting a traffic stop the deputy learned that the truck, trailer and a John Deere tractor were unreported stolen vehicles.

The truck had been stolen out of Murrieta; the trailer

and tractor were stolen from the National Cemetery. The driver, Johnathan Durr (age 30) of Lake Matthews, was in possession of 5 grams of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He was arrested and booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center.

BURGLARY

INCIDENT DATE: November 2, 2020

On Monday, November 2, 2020, at 8:20pm, deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s station responded to the 31000 block of Grape Street, city of Lake Elsinore, regarding a commercial burglary. Upon arrival, deputies saw a subject inside the Wells Fargo Bank. Deputies contacted the subject as he exited the building through a side door. The suspect was identified as Duane Blunt, a 42 year old male from Lake Elsinore.

Upon contact with Blunt, deputies located evidence linking Blunt to the burglary. Blunt was transported and booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center for commercial burglary charges. Deputies authored

a bail enhancement, which was later approved by a judge to increase Blunt’s bail to $1,000,000.

Additionally, Blunt was responsible for multiple thefts in the Lake Elsinore area. On October 20, 2020 Blunt was arrested for several counts of commercial burglary, dating from October 13-20.

A bail enhancement was authored and approved by a judge for $500,000. Blunt was released after two days, and was arrested on an additional crime of possession of a stolen vehicle on October 26, 2020. He was booked and released on that charge.

Months after George Floyd's death ignited a wave of racial justice activism across the country, voters appeared likely to reject a proposal that would bring back affirmative action programs in college admissions and government contracting. The measure was failing by more than 1 million votes.

Scott Bennett, 49 and a retired Army officer, voted no on Proposition 16.

“You want the best people to rise up," said Bennett, who put up a Trump campaign poster near a polling station in the San Francisco Bay Area community of Danville.

“I think meritocracy idea is the best.”

Voters resoundingly rejected an attempt to undo some criminal sentencing changes passed in recent years while also agreeing to allow some people on parole for felony convictions to vote. An effort to do away with cash bail was trailing by a wide margin.

There was little drama at the top of the ticket, as Biden and U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, his California-born running mate, cruised with 65% of the vote after nearly 12 million ballots were counted.

Biden captured the state's mother lode of 55 electoral votes, more than one-fifth of the 270 needed to secure the presidency.

California has now voted for the Democratic presidential nominee in every election since 1992.

Gil Cisneros and Harley Rouda, who both won their seats two years ago, were in tight battles.

Michelle Steel, the GOP chairwoman of the county Board of Supervisors, led Rouda by about 2,000 votes out of nearly 340,000 counted while Cisneros trailed former Assemblywoman Young Kim by about 1,200 votes.

In the Central Valley, U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes — a staunch ally of President Trump — had 53% of the vote over Democrat Phil Arballo.

In San Diego, former longtime U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa had a narrow lead over Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in a district that was vacated when GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty to a corruption charge and resigned. And in the Central Valley, another former congressman, David Valadao, had a slim lead over Democrat TJ Cox, who defeated Valadao by less than 1,000 votes in 2018.

The election came under the pall of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 17,600 people in California so far, including Alameda County sheriff’s Deputy Oscar Rocha in July. His widow, Maureen Ennor-Rocha, cast her ballot for Trump on Tuesday.

“This is my first voting day without him, so I think that might be part of my anxiety,” she said. “We fly the blue line flag, we believe in protecting our police.”

It’s been decades since the Republicans were the dominant party in California.

Starting in 1952, the GOP won nine of 10 presidential elections and the state helped send Californians Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan to the White House.

When Bill Clinton defeated President George H.W. Bush in 1992, it started a streak that has now reached eight straight victories for the Democrats, including Biden.

But voters have been fickle when faced with policies championed by the state's Democratic leaders. Two years ago, lawmakers passed a law that would end the state's system of cash bail, arguing the system favored those who could afford to pay. But Tuesday, when voters were asked to uphold that law, the “no” side was winning with more than 55% of the vote.

Left unresolved on Tuesday was an initiative to raise property taxes on some commercial properties by up to $12.5 billion per year to pay for schools and local government services. No votes for Proposition 15, which enjoyed the backing of most of the state's Democratic leaders, were leading with more than 51% of the vote.

Democrats’ Senate drive halted

D

emocrats had a disappointing night in the battle for Senate control, but it was too soon for Republicans to take a victory lap Wednesday, although they brushed back multiple challengers to protect their now teetering majority.

Key races in North Carolina, Maine and Michigan remained undecided, and at least one in Georgia was headed to a January runoff.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said President Donald Trump’s campaign helped his GOP allies, but it’s still to soon to declare victory as state election officials count ballots.

“We’re waiting — whether I’m going to be the majority leader or not,” McConnell said at a press conference in his home state of Kentucky.

In a delicate pushback against Trump’s own premature claims of victory over Joe Biden in the presidential race, the GOP leader said: “Claiming you’ve won the election is different from finishing the counting.”

McConnell said he felt “pretty good” about the remaining contests. He secured a seventh term in a costly campaign, fending off Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot.

Election Night delivered a jarring outcome for Democrats who had devised an expanded political map, eager to counter Trump and his party’s grip on the Senate.

While Democrats picked up must-win seats in Colorado and Arizona, they suffered a setback in Alabama, and Republicans held their own in one race after another — in South Carolina, Iowa, Texas, Kansas, and Montana, dramatically limiting Democrats’ hopes to make inroads.

The races attracted an unprecedented outpouring of small-dollar donations for Democrats, from Americans apparently voting with their pocketbooks to propel long-shot campaigns.

The voters’ choices

will force a rethinking of Democratic Party strategy, messaging, and approach in the Trump era.

“You wasted a lot of money,” said White House ally Sen. Lindsey Graham in Columbia, South Carolina, after defeating Jamie Harrison, despite the Democrat’s stunning $100 million haul for his upstart campaign. “This is the worst return on investment in the history of American politics.”

Trump loomed large over the Senate races as did Democratic rival Joe Biden. The Trump administration’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout, as well as the nation’s uneasy mood all seemed to be on the ballot.

Voters ranked the pandemic and the economy as top concerns, according to AP VoteCast , a national survey of the electorate.

“It’s time for a different approach,” said Democrat John Hickenlooper, a former governor who unseated Republican Sen. Cory Gardner in Colorado, in a live video message posted on Facebook.

Yet voters, for the most part, stuck with the status quo.

Securing the Senate majority will be vital for the winner of the presidency.

Senators confirm administration nominees, including the Cabinet, and can propel or stall the White House agenda. With Republicans now controlling the chamber, 53-47, three or four seats will determine party control, depending on who wins the presidency because the vice president can break a tie in the Senate.

Democrats contested seats from New England to the Deep South and the Midwest to the Mountain West, reaching deep into GOP strongholds. But by early Wednesday, the tally was not too different from before Election Day. The Democrats’ gains were in Colorado and Arizona, where former astronaut Mark Kelly beat GOP incumbent Martha McSally. But they couldn’t hold on in Alabama: Former college football coach Tommy Tuberville defeated Sen. Doug Jones.

Several battlegrounds broke for Republicans: In South Carolina, Graham

survived the race of his political career against Harrison; in Texas, Sen. John Cornyn turned back former Air Force helicopter pilot MJ Hegar; in Iowa, Sen. Joni Ernst defeated Democrat Theresa Greenfield in a race seen as a toss-up; in Montana, Sen. Steve Daines routed Gov. Steve Bullock; and in Kansas, Rep. Roger Marshall prevailed over state Sen. Barbara Bollier, a former Republican who energized Democrats in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932.

The final breakdown awaited the outcome of races in Alaska, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina.

North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis has struggled against Democrat Cal Cunningham, despite the married challenger’s sexting scandal with a public relations strategist.

And in Maine the race between GOP Sen. Susan Collins and Democrat Sara Gideon could be another one that pushes later into the week. If no one in the multi-candidate field breaks the 50% threshold in the first-round votes, then there are additional tabulations in which lastplace finishers are eliminated. Under the state’s rank-choice system the tabulations continue until a candidate achieves a majority.

In Georgia, two seats were being contested and at least one is headed to a runoff after no candidate reached the 50% threshold to win.

GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler will face Democrat Raphael Warnock, a Black pastor at the church where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached, in the Jan. 5 runoff special election for the seat Loeffler was tapped to fill for retired Sen. Johnny Isakson.

In the other Georgia race, GOP Sen. David Perdue, the former business executive Trump calls his favorite senator, tried to stave off Democrat Jon Ossoff, another candidate who has benefited from the “green wave” of campaign donations. It, too, could go to a runoff.

T

he fate of the United States presidency hung in the balance Wednesday as Democratic challenger Joe Biden picked up a win in Wisconsin and fought President Donald Trump in other battleground states that could prove crucial in determining who wins the White House.

Neither candidate cleared the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, and the margins were tight in several fiercely contested states. Top advisers for both Biden and Trump on Wednesday morning expressed confidence that they respectively had the likelier path to victory in the outstanding states.

The Associated Press called Wisconsin for Biden after election officials in the state said all outstanding ballots had been count-

ed, save for a few hundred in one township and an expected small number of provisionals.

Trump’s campaign requested a recount. Statewide recounts in Wisconsin have historically changed the vote tally by only a few hundred votes; Biden leads by 0.624 percentage point out of nearly 3.3 million ballots counted.

It was unclear when or how quickly a national winner could be determined. The latest vote counts in Michigan gave Biden a small lead, but it was still too early to call the race Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said the president would formally request a Wisconsin recount, citing “irregularities in several Wisconsin counties,” and the campaign filed suit in Michigan to halt counting of ballots because it contended it wasn’t given “meaningful access” to observe the opening of ballots and the counting process At the same time, hun-

dreds of thousands of votes were still to be counted in Pennsylvania.

The margins were exceedingly tight in states across the country, with the candidates trading wins in battlegrounds.

Trump picked up Florida, the largest of the swing states, while Biden flipped Arizona, a state that has reliably voted Republican in recent elections.

The unsettled presidential race came after Democrats entered election night confident not only in Biden’s prospects, but also in the party’s chances of taking control of the Senate. But the GOP held several seats that were considered vulnerable, including in Iowa, Texas, Maine and Kansas. Disappointed Democrats lost House seats but were expected to retain control there.

The high-stakes election was held against the backdrop of a historic pandemic that has killed more than 232,000 Americans and wiped away millions of jobs. Both candidates spent months pressing dramatically different visions for the nation’s future, including on racial justice, and voters responded in huge numbers, with more than 100 million people casting votes ahead of Election Day. Trump, in an extraordinary move from the White House, issued premature claims of victory and said

THE POLITICAL NOTEBOOK From the Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto

WILL OF THE PEOPLE This article will appear 2 days after the election. My deadline is before the election so I can only guess what the results may be.

My hope is that the results will reflect the will of the American people.

In political philosophy, the general will, is the will of the people as a whole. The term was made famous by 18th-century Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Politicians of both parties frequently use this phrase to suggest that the position or policy they are advocating is what the people want. If they are elected, they suggest that implies that the people want what they support or oppose. A constitution is an aggregate of fundamental principles or established precedents that constitute the legal basis of an organization or other type of entity and commonly determine how that entity is to be governed. A constitution is also a way to give certain rights and privileges to a minority and to limit the will of a people so that a majority cannot repress a minority.

In America we the people express our will through voting. In an ideal world, everyone who is a lawful citizen would vote and the “will of the people” would be known. We have never come close to that ideal. In the 2016 presidential election, only 61% of citizens voted. So how can we determine the “will of the people”.

For the purposes of this article, let’s assume that those who vote roughly represent the sentiments of those who choose not to vote.

The Presidential election in 2016 favored Democrats over Republicans by 48.5% to 46.4%. Neither party had a majority but three million more voted for Hillary than Donald. The current U.S. Senate has 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats. These 100 Senators were elected over 3 elections, 2014, 2016, and 2018. The total Republican votes across all 50 States in those 3 elections was 98 million. The total Democrat votes was 124 million, a margin favoring Democrats by 26 million votes or 11% more for Democrats than Republicans. It is obvious that the current Senate does not reflect the will of the people. Neither does Donald Trump. Neither does the Supreme Court. While Republicans have won the popular vote only once in the last 7 Presidential elections since 1992, they have appointed six of the nine current Justices.

Polls indicate that a majority of Americans support:

The Affordable Care Act or Medicare for All.

Action to address Global Warming

Black Lives Matter.

Increasing Minimum Wage.

Gay Marriage and LGBTQ rights.

We need our government to reflect the will of the people.

America will never be great until the will of the people is reflected in the representation in Washington and the actions of our politicians. Unfortunately, Republicans have tried and are continuing to thwart the will of the people. Republicans have tried to suppress the vote all across the nation, from reducing polling and drop off locations (Texas) to filing law suits to invalidate ballots submitted on time. According to the New York times, there have been over 300 lawsuits, in 44 states, over voting rules this election cycle. Republicans have attempted to kneecap the Postal Service to prevent mail-in-ballots being received on time. Republicans have encouraged armed thugs to “monitor” polling places as intimidation tactics and just this week have surrounded and harassed a Biden / Harris campaign bus in Texas.

Let’s hope the true “will of the people” was expressed in this election despite Republican efforts to thwart it. Let’s hope the election results reflect the “will of the people.

In South Carolina, Harrison energized voters, among several Black Democratic candidates for Senate including Warnock, drawing an outpouring of national support in a year of racial reckoning.

“We didn’t get the result at the ballot box that we wanted, but we showed courage and determination,” Harrison said on Twitter. “We brought hope back to South Carolina.”

Stuck in Washington as McConnell rushed the Senate to confirm Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett a

week before Election Day, senators quickly fanned out — some alongside the president — for last-ditch tours to shore up votes.

The political landscape is quickly changing from six years ago, when most of these senators last faced voters.

The Senate will welcome some newcomers as others retire. In New Mexico, Democrat Ben Ray Lujan, a member of House leadership, was elected to the seat held by Democrat Tom Udall.

Tennessee Republican Bill Hagerty won the seat held by Republican Lamar Alexander. Republican Cynthia Lummis, the former congresswoman from Wyoming, won the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Mike Enzi.

Joe Biden Is Targeting a Great U.S. Industry RICH LOWRY | COLUMNIST

J

oe Biden wants to take one of the great American success stories of the past several decades and drive it into the ground.

He would turn his back on the stupendous wealth represented by proven reserves of oil and gas in this country.

Rather than focusing on producing cheap, abundant energy -a key ingredient to human progress through all of human history -- he’d embark on the fool’s errand of trying to adjust the world’s thermostat 80 years from now.

After a 50-year effort to diminish our reliance on Middle Eastern oil, which has miraculously happened at last, Biden would force the U.S. to transition to solar and wind, industries currently dependent on Chinese supply chains.

Whereas California has embraced the radical goal of a carbon-free electric grid by 2045 (and has drastically increased the price of energy in the state already), Biden has seen and raised the Golden State by embracing a goal of 2035. All this was underlined by Biden’s statement at the end of the last debate that he wants to transition from oil.

It’s a funny time to want to kneecap oil and gas. Proven reserves of

natural gas in the U.S. are higher than ever before, thanks to American-made technological innovations. A couple of years ago the U.S. surpassed Russia and Saudi Arabia in crude oil production.

In recent years, petroleum and natural gas exports have been increasing. And, of course, the rise of natural gas has cut U.S. carbon emissions.

This should be considered a national strength to be built on, not a national shame to be put on a glide path to extinction. Fossil fuels are a tremendously useful source of energy, and no hype about renewables can obscure that reality.

In 2019, petroleum, natural gas and coal accounted for 80% of overall energy consumption in the United States, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration. Renewables made up only 11%, and the bulk of that came from biomass (wood and biofuels) and hydroelectric. Despite being heavily subsidized, wind and solar, combined, were responsible for only about a third of our renewable energy.

The oil and gas industry should also be prized as a source of good American jobs. Earnings range from about $137,000 a year for petroleum engineers to roustabouts at $44,000, according to

The idea that we are going to transition to wind and solar painlessly is a fantasy. Germany has been spending tens of billions of dollars a year trying to make this happen. Its renewable energy program has doubled the cost of energy, while fossil fuels still account for about 80% of its energy supply.

If we think eschewing fossil fuels is going to convince other countries to do the same, we are fooling ourselves. Like in the United States, the industrial takeoff in China coincided with a jump in the use of coal. China is still building coal plants at a furious clip, and its already prodigious use of coal accounts for more than half of the world’s total, according The Institute for Energy Research.

The Biden plan is an assault on American ingenuity and wealth, not to mention common sense.

Now no one can say he wasn’t warned.

Bicycling in the Valley: Part II Park Hill and Bike Paths PETER PUTNAM |CONTRIBUTED

icycling is easier when one is retired.

That is, assuming that one’s health and inclination hold out. This excursion requires a circle around Park Hill, a prominence in the valley, then a ride up and down the bicycle paths adjacent Esplanade Ave on both sides. As I pedal, I see a former colleague at nine AM, and families with children. My colleague will have to return for the next school year. Homeless people now make the park their home. During my ride, I see squirrels, rabbits, and a long gopher snake. When on the south side of Park Hill, the road runs between an orange grove on the hillside, and a row of olive trees on the other. These are the kinds of thing you youngsters might have seen if you hadn’t been born so late. A neighbor on Park Ave. has constructed barrier walls against any future cars driving into the house; another neighbor’s wall is broken down and repaired on the west side of the street as it joins Hewitt and climbs. Once on this trip, on the west side of Park Hill, I saw a man’s body on the ground on the east side of the street, with his bicycle lying nearby. It looked bad. Later I found out later that he had been struck and died. On the other side of the hill, another man-- “Danny” met his fate—or so said the signs. His mourners have set up quite a display, including candles, a cross and signs like “Stop Impaired Driving” and “Don’t Be a Jerk—Stop Hauling Ass”. There is a photograph of a handsome, young man. Someone took black marker in hand and detailed the death, including the intoxicated culprit who left him there to die.

Sometimes a bicyclist’s wreck is all his own fault. I crashed back in 2009, this time on a significantly more upscale bike that my friend and ex-colleague, Gary Norgan, sold me for $50. I forget the make and model, but it was worth quite a bit more than $50. So, I came down out of the newer tract above Park Ave, Grace St., and was slowing to negotiate the turn to the left when I hit just a little bit of water

and . . . DOWN I went! My helmet completely protected my head, except the top right bone surrounding my eye socket. I had no idea what I looked like. But this cut short my ride and back home I went. It was a shame not to have gotten through life without getting a black eye, but I looked bad, as people do when they get a black eye. I wore an eye patch for a few days until the swelling and blackness went away. As I was running for office that year (San Jacinto City Council), I rather thought that my eye patch might make me menacing and mysterious looking and so attract votes.

As it happened, not enough voters agreed with this assessment, and I failed to win any of the four open seats. But, again: there were fifteen of us running that year . . .

Of all the things, creatures, dangers, weather and traffic that I have encountered on my trips around Park Hill, most interesting by far was a white and black sheet of paper that I saw affixed once to a chain link fence, just after the road passes Columbia St. Although I prefer to maintain the cardiovascular workout, I stopped once to read the notice. I don’t recall the name, but clearly it was a memorial to a man who had fought in World War II. The man’s survivors thought it most important to advise passersby to know that this man was a ‘Liberator of Dachau’. He had lived a long time—into his eighties as I recall. A man accomplishes much in that time, but of all the things that he did, this one fact was the one that someone thought most important. He had freed other human beings from slavery.

The notice is gone now, but I made sure during my years as an English teacher to mention to my students, whenever we covered our World War II unit in the Spring semester what I had read that day and why.

I

t has ever so often been said, "Necessity is the mother of invention."

Due to the Coronavirus, night-time has been dimmed to a flicker in most musical venues. However, I witnessed something recently when the Derby's Bar and Grill introduced a special kind of entertainment under the stars as Neil Morrow opened his Piano on the Patio show. Neil and guitarist Travis Daggert caused the stars to shine brighter and toe-tapping a retro form of keeping time.

The joint jumped with the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, Billy Joel plus a dash of Sinatra and Reba McIntyre tossed in to spice up the already boiling stew of original rock and then some.

Yes, the joint was jumpin'.

Actually, the music was so hot nobody noticed the chill of an October breeze drifting in from the Pacific Ocean.

If you like Elvis, The Coasters, Kenny Rogers, Garth

Brooks, Credence Clearwater or the Eagles you would have had more to digest than at a Thanksgiving Dinner in New England. These two guys are so talented I wondered why I'd never heard of them, so I began asking questions.

Neil began tinkling the ivories at age 4 or 5. His grandmother was a resident of Hemet and when he visited her, his fingers went directly to her upright Piano and there was born a true musician.

He explained, "I knew my fingers were gonna do something more than holding a shovel or pitchfork. L was born to play the Piano.

Although I didn't major in music, I was beginning to be seriously involved with music while in high school."

After graduation, he began to play with different local bands throughout Orange County. "I was born and raised in Anaheim. I began to be known as the kid on the Piano, so I began to get lots of local gigs.

"I did a lot of work for Disneyland. That's where I met Scott Bruce who was the official 'Elvis' for 15 years. He took me under his wing and taught me a lot about showmanship. I owe him a lot."

Neil also toured with a group known as, "Cash, Killer and the King." Johnny, Jerry Lee and Elvis. "We toured the country - the Nevada Clubs, Laughlin, Vegas and Mesquite, expanding into the Midwest and South. They loved our show in Mississippi and Louisiana because they were all born and raised Southerners; he admits to loving Swing and Country.

"One of the greatest things about musicians is how they understand each other no matter the genre. I get requests from all generations.

Sinatra or Little Richard. I keep tuned to the generational music progression."

He no longer resides in Orange Country. "I recently moved my family to Menifee, a town nearby to Hemet."

The COVID virus has restrained musicians in Cal-

ifornia. Lately, he has been performing in Arizona and Nevada. "Places I've had relationships with in the past that are still open. Right now, there are not many entertainment options in California.

This is our first time at the Derby and the reception has been awesome. I think it is a great idea this 'Piano under the stars. It is quite unique.

I'm looking forward to coming back in the near future."

His sidekick, Guitarist Travis Daggert, is a product of nearby Moreno Valley.

His father was a Pastor, so his musical education began at age 12 in a church.

He's been working with Neil the past few years and they blend well together. Everybody in the entertainment business, either artist or club owner, is struggling. Jesse Vivanco, the genial owner of Derby's, has managed to survive the pandemic so far. Many club owners have shuttered their doors. A few have kept the home fires burning. The Runs is one of the Mission Inn’s main fundraising events for their Foundation. In the past few years, the Golden Era Productions’ Truth About Drugs Running Team has participated in the run with thousands of other runners. A Move-Up Homebuyer Turns Moxie into Money NEWSUSA | CONTRIBUTED

ocelyn Vasquez is a determined Hispanic woman who knows exactly want she wants: To build financial wealth through homeownership.

Three years ago, the L.A.-based mortgage professional was on the cusp of making her dream of buying a home - before she turned 30 -- a reality.

She was single, 28 years old and wasn't going to let a little thing like not having a 20 percent down payment stand in her way.

Her parents, like many people, felt she should hold off until she could save for a larger down payment. But Jocelyn had other ideas.

"I did my homework and knew using mortgage insurance (MI) would allow me to make as low as a 3 percent down payment," she explains. "I bought my townhouse for $278,000 and put down $13,900. It would have

taken me almost eight years to save $55,600 for a 20 percent down payment! As it was, my 5 percent down payment used up most of my savings."

Fast forward a few years and her decision paid off.

Due to low interest rates and increased demand for housing, her home had appreciated significantly.

In March 2020, she sold her townhouse and made an $86,926 profit.

"Imagine if I had waited eight years to save for a 20 percent down payment!" marvels Jocelyn. "I wouldn't have been able to get my foot in the door of homeownership when I did."

The sale of her townhouse allowed Jocelyn to move up to a much larger house in a gated community in Simi Valley, CA. Typically, when buyers like Jocelyn move up, they have enough equity or profit from the sale of their previous home to put down 20 percent.

Relying on her experi-

ence as a loan processor and mortgage insurance employee, Jocelyn chose to buck that trend and use MI as a financial tool again.

She purchased her second home this spring for $537,500, and despite having enough money for a 20 percent down payment, Jocelyn put down 11 percent or $60,000.

"In my last house, I cut myself short by using almost all my savings for my down payment," Jocelyn explains. "I didn't want to do that this time around. I knew my new house needed some repairs and updates. Plus, I was purchasing it during the uncertainty of the pandemic, and I wanted to have ready cash in case I lost my job."

Her decision gave her the financial freedom to remodel her kitchen, buy furniture, pay off two credit cards and still have savings left for a rainy day. In addition to having a bigger house in a bet-

By Freddy Groves BLUE WATER SAILORS AND AGENT ORANGE Blue Water sailors, heads up. The Department of Veterans Affairs has now made it easier for you to file a claim for Agent Orange exposure. Starting Jan. 1, 2020, The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 (PL 116-23) extends coverage to those who weren’t inland but were shipboard. The difficulty has been gathering all the records and logs required to prove your location.

Now the National Archives and Records Administration has digitized declassified Navy and Coast Guard deck logs (aka ship or captain’s logs) from 1956-1978 and put them online to make it easier for veterans to validate their claims. This includes the hospital ship USS Sanctuary.

Some particulars: * If you were within 12 nautical miles of the coast of Vietnam from Jan. 9, 1962 to May 7, 1975, or in the Korean Demilitarized Zone between Jan. 1, 1967 and Aug. 31, 1971, you qualify. * If you have any of these medical conditions, you qualify: AL amyloidosis, chronic B-cell leukemias, chloracne, diabetes mellitus Type 2, Hodgkin’s disease, ischemic heart disease, multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy, porphyria cutanea tarda, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers and soft tissue sarcomas. * If you’ve never filed, go ahead and do it quickly. Use VA Form 21-526EZ, Application for Disability Compensation and Related Compensation Benefits. If you did file and were turned down, try again, and use VA Form 20-0995, Decision Review Request: Supplemental Claim.

Payment is retroactive to when you first filed. Priority is given to those with a terminal condition.

In one case, the doctor said that, no, she had never prescribed anything without first speaking to the patient over the phone to ensure that the drug or equipment was required. The VA OIG didn’t just take her word for it, though. It dug around and unearthed the truth: The doctor in Dallas had committed telemedicine fraud against federal insurers including Medicare, Tricare and CHAMPVA by repeatedly ordering products without ever talking to the patient. The result: She’ll have to forfeit $33,000 in fees she took for telemedicine visits she didn’t do and pay a $180,000 fine. Later, at sentencing, she could be sent to the slammer for five years.

In another case, the VAOIG investigated a urologist who had “severe hand tremors and possibly low visual acuity” to determine whether facility leaders had evaluated him and his continued clinical privileges with the VA. The OIG also discovered an additional concern: whether facility leaders had followed directives to report the surgeon to the appropriate state licensing boards.

The answer: No, facility leaders had not overseen the problem of hand tremors and low visual acuity; no, he hadn’t been reported to licensing boards; and no, nobody had made recommendations about the surgeon’s privileges. Meanwhile, there were veterans who had invasive urological procedures done by a doctor with shaky hands and bad vision.

Not all OIG cases are so serious, but they do merit attention. In one case, managers of a patient account center used government money to buy refreshments for employees in connection with a VA Diversity and Inclusion Initiative event. However, VA policy says they can only buy food for cultural events that raise awareness of ethnic history if the food is a sample of that culture and is meant to be educational.

he U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today their partnership with Veterans Matter has helped more than 4,000 Veterans exit homelessness and move into permanent housing since 2012.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and VA’s Supportive Housing program, known as HUD-VASH , works with Veterans Matter to help Veterans experiencing homelessness and who qualify for rental subsidies to cover the cost of security deposits.

“Collaborations with organizations like Veterans Matter is fundamental to achieving our goal of ending

homelessness among Veterans,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “We celebrate the more than 4,000 Veterans that have stable housing as a result of selfless acts of kindness by people who believe every Veteran deserves a place to call home.”

From 2012 to 2016, the partnership helped to house 1,000 Veterans and has since assisted 3,000 additional Veterans, an increase of 200% during the past four years. Veterans who receive this financial assistance are able to move into approved housing quickly, often be-

cause Veterans Matter is able to provide the security deposits to the landlord within 24-48 hours.

Veterans Matter is a program of the non-profit organization 1Matters.org . Established in 2012, the program removes financial obstacles to securing stable housing for Veterans experiencing homelessness in 25 states and the District of Columbia.

“As a nation, we have an obligation to help Veterans who fall on hard times,” said Ken Leslie, who founded Veterans Matter and once

was homeless. “Our partnership with VA demonstrates how the public and private sectors can unite to help Veterans exit homelessness and reintegrate back into their families and communities.”

The HUD-VASH program is a collaboration between HUD and VA that combines HUD housing vouchers with VA supportive services such as employment assistance, health care, mental health treatment and substance use counseling.

The program enrolls more Veterans who have experienced long-term or repeated homelessness than any other federal program.

Coronavirus Testing Jumps In Riverside County

iverside County’s coronavirus screenings have increased significantly, and with them a proportional rise in cases, though hospitalizations remain well below their summer peak, local health officials told the Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

“A lot of outreach and work was done to increase testing, and that has been successful,” county Department of Public Health Director Kim Saruwatari said. “We have increased tremendously.”

She said the county is now at a ratio of 236.4 tests per 100,000 residents in COVID-19 screenings, compared to 221.6 per 100,000 just over a week

ago. The state threshold for large counties is 239.1.

However, that figure can be adjusted, and the county is no longer being downgraded for low testing volume.

The county’s coronavirus positivity rate is 5.8 percent, up slightly from last week, and Saruwatari attributed part of the uptick to an ongoing elevated number of infections recorded in the eastern Coachella Valley.

The aggregate number of COVID-19 infections recorded since the public health documentation period began in early March is 69,407, compared to 68,920 Monday, according to the Riverside University Health System.

The agency said the number of COVID-positive hospitalizations is 194, up 15

since from Monday, and that includes 53 intensive care unit patients, an increase of 10.

Emergency Management Director Bruce Barton said the hospitalization rates have been gradually ascending over the last month, but he noted they are well below the mid-July highs, when nearly 600 people were hospitalized.

“Hospitals and clinics have returned to pre-COVID levels, so those who really need care (for anything) need to come to our hospitals,” Barton said. “They are safe.”

Officials said the number of deaths tied to COVID-19 stands at 1,324, two more than Monday.

Soboba Fire Adds to Fleet MIKE HILES | CONTRIBUTED

T

he Soboba Fire Department recently added a new vehicle to its fleet, and it has already proven to be a perfect fit.

Chief Glenn Patterson said he recognized the need for a patrol truck and once funding became available, he was able to start the search.

Fire Captain Howard Maxcy Jr. is one two tenured Fire Captains assigned apparatus specification duties. It took only about three weeks for Maxcy to find a vehicle that met the department’s requirements and was readily available.

The Firematic patrol wildland fire apparatus has a Ford F-550 XL chassis, a 4x4 drive train and a 5-speed electric overdrive transmission. The rear pumper tank can hold 250 gallons of water. This truck marks the fourth piece of fire apparatus the department now has at its disposal.

It also maintains its Engine 1, Brush Engine and a Tractor-Driven Truck also known as a Tiller Truck.

“It’s basically a light fire engine,” Patterson said of the

newest addition. “It has all the basic tools for firefighters but was built for off road, tight spaces and short turnarounds which is perfect for some of the outlying areas of the reservation. It’s much narrower than our other trucks and is only meant to carry two or three people so it gives captains the option of taking it instead of the ladder truck when appropriate.”

The new truck has been in service since early August and has already been used for several incidents. The department has been consistently busy since early summer helping with wildfires throughout the state as part of its mutual aid agreement.

“California has a very intricate mutual aid system,” Patterson said. “Soboba responds to mutual aid when requests come into the Operational Area (Riverside County). Dispatch looks at who can send what and we base our availability on vacation schedules, training assignments and our daily staffing.”

The request can be for personnel or equipment and Soboba Fire Department has sent several crew members

out on overhead assignments in recent months. The incident determines the need and the chief can call back his firefighters at any time, should it become necessary. The usual assignment is two to three weeks. This year alone, engines have been dispatched to the counties of San Bernardino, Mariposa, Napa, Santa Cruz and most recently to Orange County on October 26.

“Being a one-station department, you have to provide into the system to get help from others when you need it,” Patterson said.

He said sometimes an engine is left at a site and the people are replaced based on evaluations done at the 14and 21-day marks. For a major incident it can be a 12- or 24-hour shift.

“I think you get used to it,” Fire Captain Jacob Briones said. “A couple of times I was involved with an initial attack which was 36 hours straight.

With those, you get pretty worn out. The main thing is to stay hydrated and rest, which is what we all learned in training.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell discounted the president’s quick claim of victory, saying it would take a while for states to conduct their vote counts. The Kentucky Republican said Wednesday that “claiming you’ve won the election is different from finishing the counting.”

The president stayed out of the public eye but took to Twitter to suggest, without basis, that the election was being tainted by late-counted ballots. Twitter flagged a number of Trump’s tweets, noting some of the information shared was “disputed and might be misleading about an election or other

civic process.”

Biden, briefly appearing in front of supporters in Delaware, urged patience, saying the election “ain’t over until every vote is counted, every ballot is counted.”

“It’s not my place or Donald Trump’s place to declare who’s won this election,” Biden said. “That’s the decision of the American people.”

Vote tabulations routinely continue beyond Election Day, and states largely set the rules for when the count has to end. In presidential elections, a key point is the date in December when presidential electors met. That’s set by federal law.

they arrive up to three days after the election.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said he had “promised Pennsylvanians that we would count every vote and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Trump appeared to suggest those ballots should not be counted, and that he would fight for that outcome at the high court. But legal experts were dubious of Trump’s declaration.

Trump has appointed three of the high court’s nine justices including, most recently, Amy Coney Barrett.

The Trump campaign on Wednesday pushed Republican donors to dig deeper into their pockets to help finance legal challenges.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, during a donor call, spoke plainly: “The fight’s not over. We’re in it.” Biden’s running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, made a pitch on Twitter to support-

ers to pitch in $5 to help pay for a fight that could “stretch on for weeks.”

Democrats typically outperform Republicans in mail voting, while the GOP looks to make up ground in Election Day turnout. That means the early margins between the candidates could be influenced by which type of votes — early or Election Day — were being reported by the states.

Throughout the campaign, Trump cast doubt about the integrity of the election and repeatedly suggested that mail-in ballots should not be counted.

Both campaigns had teams of lawyers at the ready to move into battleground states if there were legal challenges.

Trump kept several states, including Texas, Iowa and Ohio, where Biden had made a strong play in the final stages of the campaign. But Biden picked off states where

Trump sought to compete, including New Hampshire and Minnesota. But Florida was the biggest, fiercely contested battleground on the map, with both campaigns battling over the 29 Electoral College votes that went to Trump.

The president adopted Florida as his new home state, wooed its Latino community, particularly Cuban-Americans, and held rallies there incessantly. For his part, Biden deployed his top surrogate — former President Barack Obama — there twice in the campaign’s closing days and benefitted from a $100 million pledge in the state from Michael Bloomberg.

The momentum from early voting carried into Election Day, as an energized electorate produced long lines at polling sites throughout the country.

Turnout was higher than in 2016 in numerous counties, including all of Flori-

Since Patterson became fire chief in 2019, he said he has been able to implement a lot of efficiencies that have improved operations for the department, from electronic scheduling to paycheck parity.

“I’m glad we have the support of Soboba Tribal Council to help with all our needs,” Patterson said. da, nearly every county in North Carolina and more than 100 counties in both Georgia and Texas. That tally seemed sure to increase as more counties reported their turnout figures.

Voters braved worries of the coronavirus, threats of polling place intimidation and expectations of long lines caused by changes to voting systems, but appeared undeterred as turnout appeared it would easily surpass the 139 million ballots cast four years ago.

On Wednesday, some awoke to fresh anxiety about an election undecided and what could be ahead.

“Honestly I’m just more concerned about what’s gonna happen after we find out,” said Deion Flan, 30, a voter in Atlanta. “I just want everything to just go back to the American way. It’s the tension of what could happen, what may happen, what’s going to happen after.”
