STRAIT ON ELVIS Lives and Lives and Lives

RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR WRITER I t is a fact that three names always sell: Adolf Hitler, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.
Golden Smoothies Productions reiterated the point this past week, presenting "For the Love of Elvis" at Simpson Center in Hemet. To a loud and enthusiastic audience (mostly boomers or seniors) more than a dozen energetic singers paraded across the stage in enough glittering togs that would leave a Vegas Chorus girl gasping in awe.
Opening with "That's All Right Mama" through "How Great Thou Art," the performers took a fifteen minute break and rolled on into "Devil in Disguise" plus a number of other Elvis hits, ending the show with "Memories."
All in all it was akin to an Elvis Reunion. After 29 of the King’s hits, you felt like you were at a rock concert with howling teenagers and girls tossing their bras to the mighty one. But these were not teenagers. There were a number of 80 and 90 year old Elvis fans who seemed to never forget their idol.
There were some exceptional moments, led by

Aaron Craig who opened the show, belting out Elvis gems from a wheelchair. With a voice as clear as a bell, he belied his senior age and garnered the greatest ovations of the evening.
Amy Chambers lit up the occasion with a peppy rendition of "Spanish Eyes" and "It's Now or Never."
Staging was fast paced and precise. Director Denise Schwab and Assistant Director Dianne Richard seemed to be all over the room, checking to assure clear sound. Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory sponsored the event. Something to be said about Miller-Jones, they are not just in the business of the dead. They are always contributing to the community in any number of ways and are greatly appreciated by the San Jacinto Valley for their efforts to make us a better community.
One would think that

the name of the performers would indicate going back to Lawrence Welk or Swing and Sway With Sammy Kaye. Not on your life. Their bodies may show a few wrinkles but folks, they swing like rock stars.
You might want to take in their country western show "The Magic Jukebox" on June 28 at Simpson Center. They promise more than just toe-tapping, this middle-aged and beyond troop. Just sayin’.

Guest speakers shared their journeys, one of whom was keynote speaker, Chef Rosie O’Connor – an award-winning chef who has appeared on numerous Food Network television shows. She shared her story of overcoming obstacles to get where she is today, saying, “I started my life again at the age of forty...it’s never too late. I wanted to start enjoying this life, so I surrounded myself with people who are passionate and inspiring.”
An attendee expressed how she felt inspired by the women’s stories, saying, “I love how the stories are so different, but the message is the same-finding your identity, living your purpose. I was super inspired by Erica [London] and her story of turning survival into thriving, and the work she is doing with the youth.” “I want to be the woman that I needed as a girl,” says Holt. “The only way we’re going to have positive role

BASKETBALL Eagles Advance to Regional Final with Win Over Pasadena
The MSJC women’s basketball team advanced to the CCCAA Southern California Regional Final last Friday night with a second round play-off win over visiting Pasadena City College 58-47. The Eagles led for nearly the entire game, but it was never a comfortable one as MSJC led 15-11 after the opening period and 27-22 at the half. Both teams struggled to find offensive rhythm in the game as neither team shot over 25% in the contest from the field. MSJC was able to connect on 6 of 19 three pointers. The Eagles did control the boards throughout the evening though as they out rebounded the Lancers 65-45 and hauled in 27 offensive rebounds.
Pasadena made things very interesting in the closing minutes of the third quarter as they rallied to tie the score at 41 a piece at the end of three. MSJC SPORTS | CONTRIBUTED

The Lancers also scored the first two points of the fourth quarter to take their only lead of the game at 43-41, before the Eagles answered by out scoring them 17-4 the rest of the way. First Team All-State and Inland Empire Athletic Conference Player of the Year Haylei Janssens scored a game high 18 points to lead the MSJC offense, she also grabbed 8 rebounds. Third Team AllState selection Deja Blue scored 16 as she recorded a double double.
Blue also had a team high 10 rebounds in the win. De’Adra Ross added 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots for the Eagles while Kiana Castello came off the bench to add 7 big points. Keiara Barton played a pivotal role for the MSJC defense as she spent the evening holding two time All-State forward Dariel Johnson of the Lancers to 6 points in the game. The win advanced the Eagles to the State Sweet 16 and the Southern California Regional Final on Saturday March 7th when they travel to Mt. San Antonio. MSJC improved their record on the year to 27-2, Mt. SAC will enter Saturday’s contest with a season mark of 22-7, they were the regular season champions of the South Coast North Conference. The Eagles have reached at least the State Sweet 16 for five straight seasons.

If you’re like many Americans, your car is your lifeline. When it’s in need of repair, being able to cough up the cash to keep it running is critical.
A new survey finds that U.S. consumers spent an average of nearly $2,000 on vehicle repairs and maintenance in the last five years, with millennials and generation Z being hardest hit by the costs. The 2019 Ally Financial survey, conducted online by The Harris Poll, found that while adults 55 and older spent $1,654 on average for vehicle maintenance and repairs in the past five years, millennials and generation Z paid an average of $2,334 during the same time-frame.
Ally’s survey results come on the heels of research from the Federal Reserve, which found that nearly four in 10 adults would not be able to cover unexpected expenses of $400 without selling something or going into debt.
If you’re concerned about the cost of a surprise car repair leaving you running on empty, consider these tips from Ally Financial. STATEPOINT | CONTRIBUTED

An emergency savings fund can prepare you for unexpected car repair bills. Another recent Ally survey found that two-thirds of 18- to 24-year-olds haven’t established any type of emergency savings fund, compared to approximately half of all other adults. Over time, setting aside even $10 each month can potentially protect you against having to borrow or

incur debt.
STAY PROTECTED
A vehicle service contract (VSC), similar to an extended warranty, is a protection plan that covers vehicle repairs costs outside of the manufacturer’s warranty, and may be easier to budget for than a large unexpected bill from the mechanic’s shop. Unfortunately, many people aren’t taking advantage of VSCs. The Ally survey found that only 21 percent of Americans have purchased one in the last five years.
Before committing to a particular service contract, shop around to ensure that you’re working with a reputable company that offers services at locations convenient for you. Also look into additional benefits.

For example, Ally’s FlexCoverage includes 24/7 roadside assistance, towing, trip interruption protection, (e.g. reimbursement for room and board if your car troubles require an overnight stay) or rental car reimbursement. While these reimbursements are usually capped at a certain dollar amount, they can alleviate some of the burden BE PROACTIVE
Maintenance issues that go unattended can lead to heftier repair bills down the road. Schedule timely oil changes, brake pad replacements and tire rotation, and mark your calendar to check fluid levels like coolant and windshield washer fluid. If flashing lights appear on your dashboard, check your owner’s manual and contact your dealer or mechanic to see what the problem could be.
“Unfortunately, too many Americans are just one repair bill away from being forced to make tough financial decisions,” says Mark Manzo, president of Insurance at Ally Financial.
“But proactive strategies can offer peace of mind and protect your wallet.”

Bank of America y JPMorgan Chase bajaban casi 3%.
