Fleeing scene of Hemet Crash, DUI Driver causes Head-On Wreck TREVOR MONTGOMERY| CONTRIBUTED

A

uthorities last night arrested a man they allege plowed into and knocked down a light pole at the intersection of Florida Ave and Santa Fe St., before fleeing the scene and hitting two additional vehicles. The second, major injury crash happened on Stetson Ave., just west of Lyon Ave., about three miles from the first collision.

Several people and a dog were injured in the second crash, which left vehicle parts and debris spread across the roadway.

The wreck forced officials to temporarily close the street while they investigated the crash, removed the wrecked vehicles, and cleaned up the extensive debris caused by the separate crashes.

On Saturday evening, Feb. 15, City of Hemet Police and Fire, along with AMR and other emergency personnel, were dispatched to the intersection of Florida Ave and Santa Fe St. about 10:50 p.m., after receiving

When officials arrived at the scene they confirmed the SUV that hit the pole had fled the area prior to their arrival; however, they soon discovered the suspect who fled the scene left behind

his front bumper with its license plate still attached to it.

Officials also found the destroyed light pole, which had toppled over onto a row of businesses and damaged the roofs of at least two of the connected offices.

As officers were beginning to investigate the first crash, City of Hemet emergency dispatchers received another call reporting a

multi-injury, head-on collision involving at least three vehicles in the area of Stetson and Lyon avenues. 911 callers reported at least one of the injured victims, a female passenger from one of the involved vehicles, was trapped inside the destroyed truck and could not get out.

When officials arrived at the second crash site they found three wrecked vehicles, de-

scribed as a black Chevy Suburban, red pickup truck, and silver Jeep. All three vehicles had sustained major front-end damage, and the wrecked vehicles left the street blocked and impassable.

Firefighters quickly confirmed one passenger inside the heavily damaged red pickup truck was trapped inside the mangled wreckage of her vehicle, while another injured driver also appeared to be trapped inside the silver Jeep. A third victim was found down in the roadway writhing in pain. It was not immediately known which vehicle the man had been in when the accident happened.

The man, who was later identified as 24-year-old, Jonathan Padilla, was seen repeatedly punching himself in the face and head and heard crying “I messed up, I messed up,” until a Hemet PD officer intervened to calm the man down.

resident Donald Trump traveled to the Coachella Valley on February 19 to attend fundraising events at the private estate of Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison in Rancho Mirage.

Air Force One touched down at about 10:40 a.m. at Palm Springs International Airport, roughly 45 minutes behind schedule. Trump made a brief appearance at a breakfast fundraiser in Las Vegas Wednesday morning before departing for California.

A group of supporters cheered as Trump emerged from Air Force One. Trump waved and then walked over to the group, shaking hands and posing for photos as the crowd broke into chants of "Four more years!"

The attacks underscore how seriously Democrats are taking the former New York mayor’s campaign, now that he’s rocketed to double-digit support in national polls and qualified for the next two debates. Bloomberg, who formally registered as a Democrat in 2018, has faced relatively little national scrutiny in his surprisingly swift rise from nonpartisan megadonor to top-tier presidential contender.

On CNN Wednesday morning, Sanders’ national press secretary Briahna Joy Gray tried to rebut questions surrounding the Vermont senator’s health by pointing to Bloomberg, who she said had also “suffered heart attacks in the past.� Sanders suffered a heart attack last fall and released letters from doctors attesting to his health.

But Bloomberg has never suffered a heart attack; he released a doctors’ letter last year that said he did undergo coronary stent surgery in 2000.

Gray later walked back her statement, saying on Twitter that she “misspoke� about Bloomberg’s health.

Separately, the Biden campaign took on Bloomberg over ads the former mayor is running that feature shots of him working closely with former President Barack Obama. The Biden campaign posted a video to Twitter highlighting past comments Bloomberg made criticizing Obama on health care and climate change and accusing him of failing to address racism during his term. The video also includes a clip of Bloomberg declaring “I’m a friend of Donald Trump’s, he’s a New York icon.�

Bloomberg had until recently largely escaped scrutiny from the media and attacks from his opponents by avoiding the early primary states and focusing instead on campaigning in the 14 states that vote in the March 3 Super Tuesday primaries.

over $400 million spent on ads already — has thus far given him enough of a boost to win high-profile endorsements and double-digit support in the polls.

But Wednesday night’s debate in Las Vegas, where Bloomberg will face off against five opponents who have made clear in recent days they’re eager to take him on, will pose the greatest test yet of his unorthodox campaign strategy. “He is going to have a giant target on his back from all sides,� said Democratic strategist Brian Brokaw. “It’ll either all come together brilliantly or could fall apart very quickly.�

The debate comes at a pivotal point in the campaign. Some moderate Democrats increasingly are looking to Bloomberg as an alternative to progressive Sanders.

Bloomberg’s been running a campaign focused on his work on progressive priorities, like his gun-control and climate-change advocacy.

His campaign released a list of more than a dozen debate guests hours before the 9 p.m. EST event, featuring survivors of gun violence from several states. They include one man present at the 2017 shooting in Las Vegas that left 58 dead and hundreds more injured.

The stakes are high for every candidate onstage just days before Nevada’s presidential caucuses, the third contest in the Democrats’ chaotic 2020 pri-

mary season. After more than a year of campaigning, there is little clarity in their urgent search for a nominee to run against President Donald Trump in November.

Longtime establishment favorite Biden, a former two-term vice president, is fighting to breathe new life into his flailing campaign, which enters the night at the bottom of a moderate muddle behind former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar. Sanders, a Vermont senator, has emerged as the progressive wing’s clear preference after two contests as Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren is struggling to regain energy around her campaign.

Some Democrats fear that the conditions are ripe for a bare-knuckles brawl on national television that could carve new scars into a divided Democratic Party that must ultimately come together this fall if it hopes to deny the Republican president a second term.

Bloomberg’s rivals have already indicated they will lean into his explosive comments on race and gender in addition to their charge that he’s using a fortune earned from a career on Wall Street in an effort to buy the presidency. Bloomberg’s rise in national polls has been fueled almost exclusively by an unprecedented national advertising campaign, carefully controlled campaign events and a sprawling national

organization that has likely already cost him more than half a billion dollars.

Alexandra Rojas, executive director of the Sanders-allied Justice Democrats, called Wednesday Bloomberg’s first “public moment of accountability.� “It’s going to be a chance to finally bring scrutiny to Bloomberg’s record as a Republican plutocrat,� she said.

Bloomberg’s team was working to lower expectations ahead of his performance, suggesting his debate skills are rusty after more than a decade since his last election.

Bloomberg hasn’t been on a debate stage since 2009. His team notes he never faced more than one rival at a time over three elections for New York City mayor.

Despite the challenges, senior adviser Tim O’Brien signaled that Bloomberg welcomed a fight against Sanders, whom the campaign perceives to be the race’s clear front-runner. “I think you’re going to see us go toe-to-toe with Bernie Sanders on important issues,� O’Brien said in an interview, raising questions about Sanders’ personal wealth, record on criminal justice and gun control.

Sanders welcomed the fight as well.

The Vermont senator railed against Bloomberg and “a system that allows billionaires to buy elections,� while campaigning in Nevada on the eve of the debate.

While the same age and race, Bloomberg and Sanders are ideological opposites.

Bloomberg is one of the world’s richest men, having generated a net worth estimated at $60 billion after a career on Wall Street. He has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to combat climate change and gun violence and promote immigration reform in recent years, yet he takes a decidedly pragmatic approach that celebrates incremental improvement backed by data.

Sanders has a net worth estimated at $2.5 million thanks to book sales and the value of his home, but he has spent a lifetime in politics as an uncompromising democratic socialist demanding a political revolution to transform the nation’s politics and economy. He measures his success largely by the impact he’s had on the public debate, which has warmed to his calls for a $15 minimum wage, universal health care and sweeping action on climate change.

Bloomberg is not actually competing in Nevada’s Saturday caucuses or any of the four primary contests scheduled for this month, preferring to invest his time and resources in the delegate-rich states that begin voting in March. In the modern era,

such a strategy has never worked. Yet it’s never been attempted by someone as wealthy as Bloomberg, who has already invested more than $400 million into a national advertising campaign and hired more than 2,000 campaign staffers.

The focus on Bloomberg on the debate stage, of course, means there will be less oxygen for others at a critical moment.

Buttigieg essentially tied in Iowa with Sanders and was a narrow second-place finisher in New Hampshire, yet many establishment leaders remain skeptical of the 38-year-old’s limited experience and ability to assemble a multiracial coalition to defeat Trump.

Klobuchar surged into the top tier of the race with a strong debate performance in New Hampshire. But with a significantly smaller national brand, she faces lingering questions about the strength of her organization and appeal among minority voters.

Warren may have the most to gain Wednesday night, having been pushed from the top tier after a bad performance in New Hampshire’s primary last week. And Biden is betting everything on a comeback fueled by minority support in Nevada and South Carolina in the next two weeks.

POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA FOR SALE INCIDENT DATE: February 18, 2020

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 9:06pm, Palm Desert Sheriff Station deputies responded to College of the Desert, located at 43500 Monterey Avenue in the city of Palm Desert. The call for service was regarding a student in possession of marijuana on campus.

The investigation revealed that Juan Romero Velazquez, 18 years old of Mecca, was in possession of several pounds of marijuana stored in individual jars. Velazquez also had a scale,

baggies, marijuana e-cigarettes, marijuana edibles and other paraphernalia. Velazquez was arrested for possession of marijuana for sale and booked into the jail in Indio.

transported by ground ambulances to area hospitals, including one victim whose injuries were considered severe.

As the rescue efforts were continuing, a large black dog that was inside one of the vehicles when the crash occurred was found to be injured and could not walk. After the injured pup was pulled from its wrecked vehicle animal control officers responded to the scene to take the dog to a local animal shelter to receive treatment for its injuries.

As of this article the dog’s condition was unknown.

During their subsequent investigation, officers determined Padilla was traveling on Florida Ave. when for an unknown reason he lost control of his SUV and plowed into the concrete light standard. The impact sheared the pole off at the base and knocked it down – where it fell onto and damaged the roof a nearby business complex.

After speeding away from the scene of the first crash, Padilla fled several miles to the area of Stetson Ave., just west of Lyon Ave., where he plowed head-on into the red pickup, causing a secondary collision with the silver Jeep.

THERMAL VEHICLE PURSUIT AND DUI TRAFFIC COLLISION INCIDENT DATE: February 18, 2020

On February 18, 2020, about 3:36 PM, a deputy attempted a traffic enforcement stop of a suspected DUI driver, within the city of Coachella. The vehicle did not yield, and a vehicle pursuit was initiated. The pursuit terminated at Avenue 50 and Jackson Street after the suspect vehicle collided with another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle which was collided into suffered minor injury.

The suspect was identified as Froilan David Ramirez, 40 of Coachella. Ramirez was booked at the jail for felony DUI resulting in injury, felony evading and committing a felony while on bail. Ramirez was also booked for two outstanding felony arrest warrants.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY ARREST INCIDENT DATE: February 18, 2020

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at 7:38 AM, Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to an in-progress residential burglary in the 16000 block of Via Corto East, Desert Hot Springs. Deputies established a containment perimeter and the suspect refused to exit after repeated announcements. Carl Cimino, 61 of Desert Hot Springs, was

taken into custody inside the residence with the use of a police service dog. No other suspects were located. Cimino was transported to local hospital for a medical clearance prior to being booked into jail for Residential Burglary.

ASSAULT AND POSSESSION OF A FIREARM INCIDENT DATE: February 17, 2020

On Monday, February 17, 2020, at 3:32 P.M., deputies from the Perris Station responded to an assault with a deadly weapon in the 500 Block of Indian Hills Circle, Perris. Upon deputies’ arrival, they located two juveniles suffering from non-life-threatening wounds.

Both juveniles were treated by paramedics and transported to a local hospital for treatment.

During a search of the scene, a firearm was recovered.

During the investigation,

three juvenile suspects and one adult suspect was arrested. Gabriel Vasquez, 18-year-old from Perris, was booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for assault with a deadly weapon, two juvenile suspects were booked into Juvenile Hall for assault with a deadly weapon, and one juvenile suspect was booked into Juvenile Hall for possession of a firearm.

It was not immediately known why Padilla was not charged with the initial hit and run, but additional charges could be added when the alleged suspect is arraigned.

Jail records indicate Padilla remains in custody on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at an unspecified court Feb. 20.

Hemet PD’s accident investigation is continuing and officers have asked that anyone with information regarding the collisions or who witnessed either of the crashes and has not yet provided a statement to authorities to contact Hemet PD at (951) 765-2400. Callers can remain anonymous.

medals. Willie Hendrickson is also an avid sportsman: he has competed in discus, javelin, shot put, motor rally, relays and power chair soccer. He also has competed in the National Wheelchair games the last 14 years and has won the gold medal in slalom every year, so it was perfect to add the word “adaptive sportsâ€? to the name. The name change was just one of the reasons I got so excited to write this story: the other is Jonny Sandoval, the captain of the team. Another reason was Willie Hendrickson an Army Veteran, the assistant and also an ambassador for Invacare Corporation and an advocate for Cloverlane Foundation and Veteran Mobility Projects. You can see these two guys living this spirit everyday and always sharing their stories with fellow veterans around town so they will come back and check it out.

These two are like brothers. They have put together a five-man team: Johnny Sandoval Navy Captain, Willie Hendrickson Army Assistant, Al Marconi Navy team mate, Richard Galindo USMC team mate, and Glen Bryant Navy teammate and all from the Inland Empire . The Warrior Veterans Adaptive Sport Club is the first of its kind.

They are like a family that loves to practice and play expo games. They will tell you that it’s not about wining, it is about getting out and having fun, and these guys know how to have fun! Spending time with these guys, filming, taking their pictures, and getting to know them, lead me to get more involved with the team, and, being a disabled veteran myself, I have the pleasure and opportunity to learn something totally new: how to be a soccer coach! I am the coach for this great team. I am having so much fun learning how to be a coach, and the guys make me feel so good. I love their positive energy and I enjoy watching them play and cheering them on. You can see Johnny always giving the opposing team tips and words of encouragement. It really isn’t about winning or losing, it's about having fun: it’s a totally different mind set‌everyone is a winner .

The team is getting ready to go the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Portland, OR., July 3 -8, the “National Veterans Wheelchair Games 40 years of Excellence.� This is the largest annual wheelchair event in the world. It is co-presented by the VA U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Paralyzed Veterans of America. The athletes come from nearly every generation of veterans and they participates in all kinds of sports.

he Soboba Foundation readily stepped up to help St. John’s School in Hemet implement a project for students to reduce use of plastic water bottles. The recent installation of two water filling stations has been met with excitement and involvement by the 160-member student body in transitional kindergarten through eighth grade.

Administrators at the school began talks last summer on ways they could reduce the use of plastic bottles after the issue was brought to their attention by students who have always participated in environmental awareness in one form or another.

“The ‘Reduce the Use’ program is moving forward in phases,” said Stephanie Lynch, Director for Staff and Students.

“We bought and installed two bottle filling stations, using the Soboba Foundation grant monies,” said Lynch.

Lynch credits the student council with trying to find a solution to the amount of plastic being used and concluded this would be a worthwhile project. Members Emily Domenigoni, Cayleigh Epstein, Marley Puckett, Luke Teague, Daniel Valdez and Riley Valle said they were eager to share details with classmates about the many reasons the stations should be utilized as much as possible.

“There are so many things ruining our environment and animals die because they lose their habitat and that’s not right,” said Luke, 10.

“I looked it up, and soon there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans and it’s just ridiculous.”

Eighth-grader Daniel said it’s important to realize that it’s not just plastic bottles causing the problems and that we need to keep our beaches and other areas clean of all waste.

away or recycled so refilling our own water bottles takes care of that,” said Marley, 13.

The students said they are environmentally conscious all the time, not just at school. “In my family we sometimes use metal straws and when we go to the grocery store, we reuse our grocery bags,” said Daniel, 13.

The next step of the “Reduce the Use” project is to move to water-only service with hot lunch and snack programs, which 100 percent of students and staff have agreed to do. Along with encouraging students to bring refillable bottles for use at the new filling stations, cafeteria manager Georgeann Bryan used this opportunity to begin serving fruit-infused water from two-gallon glass water dispensers

“She’s really on board with this program from a health education and nutrition side,” said facilities manager David Bellamy.

The school’s aim is to expand its environmental conservation program and to improve service to the community by ultimately having: four hands-free, refrigerated bottle filling/ drinking fountain units: one hands-free, refrigerated bottle filling/ADA bi-level drinking fountain unit and one outdoor water bottle filling station/ADA drinking fountain unit on the school’s campus.

“We are using this project as part of our science and health curriculum,” Lynch said. “We began our conservation efforts here years ago, moving away from Styrofoam and just learning how to be more environmentally friendly.”

The water filling stations also include a filtration system to remove deposits, including lead, so consumers are delivered a higher quality water.

The Elkay stations are the type used at stadiums, resorts and parks and come equipped with a “Green Ticker” informing users of the number of 20-ounce plastic water bottles saved from waste by using the station. More than 1,000 plastic bottles have been

“The kids love seeing the numbers go up,” said Bellamy, who has been at the school for 23 years.

Posters showing the positive results of the stations are posted at each station including the fact that students will drink 500,000 ounces of clean filtered water during the school year and that 6,500 single use plastic water bottles will be saved from landfills annually by St. John’s School.

A survey of staff and students was conducted before the installation of

the bottle filling stations to evaluate the impact and found more than 40 percent said they sometimes or always used a single-use plastic water bottle during school or after-school activities with an average of 35 bottles being used weekly.

The majority, more than 83 percent, said they disposed of empty water bottles in one of the many recycling bins located on the campus. More than 85 percent of responders agreed with the statement that “the production and disposal of single use water bottles negatively impacts our Earth’s resources, the size of

our landfills and the level of water pollution in the fluids you drink every day.”

Since it opened in 1983, the mission of St. John’s School is to serve the San Jacinto Valley by preparing students to be leaders and confident scholars by guiding them in recognizing and nurturing their talents and fostering a community that seeks to love, serve and encourage others.

Lynch said this latest program has been so gratifying because the kids feel like their words made a difference and it helps them learn that gradual change is still change.

We’ve all had them!

Recently, I had such a recall travel through my on-duty brain. Before I was even out of bed one morning the now famous quote from Queen Elizabeth 1 (1603) while on her deathbed dropped into mind. “All my possessions for a moment of time” and at that exact instant in her life, the Queen came to the stark reality that nothing is as valuable as time. You can always get more money, but you can never acquire more time. Amazingly and unfortunately, this is unforeseen by many people.

Eph 5:15-16 tells us to “Be careful how you live; be mindful of your steps. Don’t run around like idiots as the rest of the world does. Instead, walk as the wise! Make the most of every moment …” Yes! Of course! Why not, but how to do that is the big question!

Does our community need improvement, healing, motivation, inspiration, support, and encouragement??

Absolutely - just pick a project and get to work. I mean,

just how hard can it be to aid in the improvement of your own neighborhood?

Think about what your city would lose if you were never to get involved? I always ask people, “Are you part of the solution or part of the problem?” And just think, working within your own city can cost you something as free as your spare time.

Harvey Mackay nailed it when he said this: “Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it …” I’ve listed just a few things that each of us can actually do to get started to make our Valley a strong, vigorous, more delightful and amazing place to live and work. But listen, for God’s sake, we all need to stop complaining and just get involved. As Nike says, “Just do it!”

March 7, 1928 - February 10, 2020 Walter Farris Hampton, Jr., 91, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020, at his home in Hemet, California.

Surviving are wife Dorinne Hampton, sons, Steve Hampton and Dan Bowers, daughters, Patty Brandon, Cathy Hardy, Kathy Coger and Deborah Gould; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, February 28, 2020 at Miller-Jones Mortuary Chapel located at 1501 W Florida Ave., Hemet, California.

A reception will follow the service at the Miller-Jones Mortuary Ramona Room.

Residents scheduled a third protest called the "Trump UnWelcome Rally," was planned Wednesday morning at Dunes View and Sahara roads in Rancho Mirage.

Republican National Committee chairs Ronna McDaniel and Tommy Hicks Jr., national finance chairman Todd Ricketts and Trump reelection campaign manager Brad Parscale are among those expected to attend the fundraising event at Ellison's estate.

According to an invitation to the event, first obtained by The Desert Sun, a $250,000 contribution will pay for a roundtable, photo opportunity with the president and golf outing for two. A $100,000 contribution includes a photo opportunity and golf outing,

according to the invitation.

Democratic National Committee spokesman John Weber issued a statement calling Trump's Southern California fundraising swing "shameful."

"Just after proposing devastating cuts to California families' Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Donald Trump is spending time with the only Californians he's ever cared about: ultra-wealthy donors," Weber said.

"Californians deserve a president who prioritizes the needs of working families over the demands of a few powerful special interests, and this November, we'll send one to the White House."

Trump is scheduled to depart from Palm Springs International Airport early Wednesday afternoon aboard Air Force One, bound for Bakersfield, where he will speak to Rural Stakeholders on California Water Accessibility. Trump is also scheduled to speak at a campaign rally Wednesday evening in Phoenix.

He wanted me to learn, and I was avidly involved from day one in social issues. I had a yearning for knowledge, and some of my most fun times with my father was when I worked with him the garage, learning to do stuff — learning how things worked.

“I was adept at blowing up car engines. He wasn’t too happy with me when that happened with the first car he bought me, a VW. I gutter sniped. Since he owned a Chrysler Automobile business, I grew up around cars and garages. He taught me how to respect and take of cars, how to change a tire, make sure the radiator had water and check the dipstick so that I didn’t forget to see that the car had enough oil.

“My mother and grandmother taught me how to be a good home maker. It was a time the family unit still existed. We didn’t sit around with a crappy cell phone. I don’t understand how a family having dinner in restaurants and there is dead silence. Every cotton-picking one of them is fingering a cell phone, like it was the main entre.”

Robin was an only child because mother was older and unable to have more children. “However, it was important to them that I had a relationship with all my cousins and extended family.

HOW DID SHE BECOME INVOLVED WITH LOCAL POLITICS? “My parents introduced me too community events: President of the PTA Father’s Club and Pancake Breakfast Club. They were football parents and I became scorekeeper for the high school team.

My first boyfriend was captain of the baseball team, so I was into that kind of thing and my folks promoted that for me. They wanted me to be aware of social issues.”

Robin had retired from Bell Telephone Company in Chicago because they wanted to transfer her to their Lab in Morris Town, New Jersey. A born and raised product of Southern Sunshine, she preferred sunshine to the East Coast’s cold and freezing winters.

HOW DID SHE MEET HER HUSBAND, MEL? “That’s an interesting story. He was superintendent on an air conditioning job in Riverside County, doing construction work in 1984. We were both working on that job. I used to kibitz him because he seemed always to be late. I later discovered that we lived in the same neighborhood when I was a teenager, although we went to different schools. He also lived in the San Fernando Valley and was one of my Godsister’s friends. I knew a girl that he was dating, but he and I had never met. So here we were

in Hemet in our forties, both the product of previous marriage and divorces. My aunt and uncle had lived in Hemet since 1961 and my parents came here in 1974 after my dad’s accident. So I knew Hemet and had spent a lot of time here over the years.

“My mother invited him to Easter Dinner after church.

He asked if he could go to church with me the next Sunday. Of course, he could.

My mother was crazy about him. He ended up renting an apartment in a building we managed.

“My mother died in 1986 and six months later, we were already living in Hemet, on a Sunday morning we had come home from Riverside where were property managers. My father was sitting at the kitchen table, busy writing out his check for church that morning. He put his book away and handed me a newspaper. ‘I want you to read this article. You’re going to build that library in Hemet.’ The city council had just turned down a grant for 10 million dollars to build a new library. That money went to three other libraries.

‘You are going to run for city council and that will be your issue. I’ll give you the money you need to get started. Not a lot, but you’re going to get that library built. I can’t believe that the best they can do is that little building at Florida and Buena Vista.’ I had not even thought about running.

There was an opening on the planning commission. So I went to see Lori Van Arsdale about the Planning Commission vacancy. I knew a lot about engineering because during my years with the telephone company my accounts were with the U. S. Government and banking industry in Illinois. Consequently, I felt I could work out fine on the Planning Commission.

ard to imagine someone born in the tinseled city of Hollywood, finding a home in a bedroom community like Hemet, but I found a lady with that background.

Last week we sat down for a breakfast interview at Four Seasons, a somewhat elegant retirement community on the far west side of Hemet.

Robin Lowe has a long history of being her own person, doing her own thing and with the encouragement of her parents. Growing up in the View Park area of Los Angeles, she attended both the Lutheran Parochial and Englewood Unified School District.

“My mother was an RN. She applied for medical school but was turned down.

So she opened three nursing homes (known as sanitarium in those days) and became a successful businesswoman.

“For a while, my dad owned a hardware store.

After some time at that, he went to work for American Hospital Supply Company and finally settled into the automobile business where he operated a successful enterprise until he was injured in an automobile accident.”

Her parents were progressives who believed strongly that women had the right to anything a man could do at a time when that was not a popular idea in a country pretty much dominated by white men when it came to business.

“My father was a veteran of World War II, and they waited until the war ended before getting married. Then I came along, and they both decided I would not be the victim of parents who both worked.

They wanted a traditional upbringing for me. So she sold her businesses and concentrated on being a good mother to me. My father was sup-

My cousins are like brothers and sisters to me. So we have always been a close family.

My mother’s parents lived in California so they were an integral part of my life growing up. It was a rare occasion that we did not spend Sundays with the family. So family structure was implanted in my mind from birth.”

City Council decision waives costly liquor license fees for veterans’ organizations JAYME CASTRO | STAFF WRITER

O

n Tuesday, at Hemet City Council Chambers, council members approved to waive conditional use permitting (CUP) process fees, simplifying the process for bonafide, nationally recognized Veterans organizations in obtaining a liquor license for on-site sales.

For the past two years, Joe Males, Commander for the American Legion Post 53, in Hemet, has been an active voice at city council meetings on behalf of the Legion.

He and other members seek to meet Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) requirements that will enable the Post to sell beer, wine and liquor on site, but processing fees run skywards from $5,200, a bill the non-profit simply cannot flip.

Post 53 has been requesting to have a licensed bar within their building to facilitate in fund raising event opportunities and provide service to generate more revenue for their operations and veteran services.

ABC requires the city to approve what is called a type 52 license – a liquor license pertaining to Veterans groups recognized by congress - that of which the American Legion falls under. The application for such license requires a CUP and its costly fees.

“It’s too expensive when you’re struggling,” says Males, regarding the fees.

“During the Summer our electricity bill is over $1,000 . . . to keep the doors open and to help our veterans as needed, we have to have some type of income – our bingo

City Council voted unanimously in favor of waiving fees. This action will pertain to all nationally recognized veterans’ organizations who seek a type 52 ABC license.

Though fees are waived, the organizations are not exempt from the process of obtaining the CUP and must have said permits attached to the operation of their licensed bar, giving the city the enforcement to deal with potential violations.

The American Legion Post 53, until recent years, was only open once a month for meetings. Their doors are now open daily, which creates the need for generating more revenue – something a liquor license would help with. The process takes time and the organization looks to be serving up drinks within the next 3 to 4 months.

“We’d like to thank City Council for voting yes on it,” says Male. “We appreciate their willingness to help us . . . we’re really happy . . . our whole outlook towards what we do is even better knowing the city is there to back us.”

THE POLITICAL NOTEBOOK From the Democrats of Hemet-San Jacinto PERFECTION I won’t bother with a Merriam-Webster’s definition of the term “perfect”. It would take up too much space and besides you already have a pretty good idea of what it means. “Perfect can be an adjective, a verb, or noun. It is interesting that while “perfect” means that something cannot be any better, being perfect means there are no flaws whatsoever.

Even more interesting is that there is no opposite. Antonyms are amiss, bad, defective, faulty, flawed, or imperfect. Those terms imply that there is something less than perfect but no total absence of desirable qualities but just falling short of “perfect”. Let’s face it, we all fall short of perfect, some of us fall shorterthan others. Everything we have done could have been done better. Jesse Owens was recognized in his lifetime as perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history. He set three world records and tied another, all in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet, a feat that has never been equaled and has been called “the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport”. That day was close to perfection for Owens. But it was not perfect. Owen’s 100 meter record of 10.3 seconds held for 20 years until a man named Willie Williams ran the 100 meters in 10.2 seconds. Owen’s long jump record lasted 33 years until Bob Beamon jumped over 28 feet in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

It is interesting that so many people expect our politicians to be perfect. Joe Biden has been criticized for positions he took 20 years ago. Elizabeth Warren has been criticized for claiming some of her heritage is Native American and earning her the moniker “Pocahontas”. Her claim was proven correct through a DNA test although several generations back. Some think it is disqualifying to be a billionaire, or to be young, or to be old, or to be female, or something other than heterosexual. The chief resident in the White House has criticized Mike Bloomberg for being short. The young lack experience but they bring fresh outlooks on issues, they haven’t become jaded yet. The old may lack the energy of the young but with experience comes wisdom. I am 77 years of age. My views on sexual orientation have changed since I was young. My views on gender have changed.

I would like to think that I have gained some wisdom with age.

No one is perfect and that includes all politicians. The Democrats have many very good Presidential candidates from which to choose.

They all have imperfections. Respect those who have the humility to admit to their imperfections.

Beware of anyone who tells you they have no imperfections, that they are perfect. I’m not aware of any place in the Bible where even Jesus claimed to be perfect though many Christians believe he was and is. In fact I can only think of one person who has claimed perfection, who never apologizes for anything as that would be an admission of imperfection. That person resides in the White House.

I tell my wife I will expect her to be perfect just as soon as I become perfect. She doesn’t expect that to happen anytime soon. At least my spelling in this article is perfect according to spell-check. And may your day today seem perfect to you.

Mike Bloomberg’s Offensive Campaign RICH LOWRY | COLUMNIST

T

he rich are different from you and me -- they can buy themselves instant presidential campaigns.

Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has elbowed himself into the Democratic nomination race solely on the basis of his fortune.

His campaign is high-handed as only a billionaire many times over could even contemplate. He entered late, is skipping the early contests and hasn’t participated in any of the debates to date (although that will change soon, thanks to the Democratic National Committee retrofitting its rules for Bloomberg).

It’s a free country, and with more than $50 billion to his name, Bloomberg can spend as much money as he likes on whatever suits his fancy. But Bloomberg 2020 is still an affront to small-d democratic sensibilities, a tribute not to his superior political skills or messaging compared with the other candidates, but to his access to an enormous personal bank account.

The level of his spending is truly astonishing -- Croesus goes allin on Super Tuesday. Bloomberg spent more than $300 million on various forms of advertising. He’s single-handedly changed the market for TV ads in many places. He spent $10 million on a Super Bowl spot, or about half of what Joe Biden raised in the entire fourth quarter.

This is the Bloomberg way. He spent a quarter of a billion dollars to become and stay New York mayor for three terms. He was eligible for his third term only because he got a term-limit law changed, with the support of charities that he happened to make generous donations to.

What’s wrong with all this, be-

yond the cynicism of thinking everything has a price tag? Maybe Bloomberg is right, that trying to go in and convince voters of your appeal at town hall events and meet-and-greets in places like Iowa and New Hampshire is for suckers.

But there is much to be said for grassroots politics. It forces candidates to take account, up close and personal, of what their voters believe and want. As president, Abraham Lincoln devoted serious time to meeting with random people who showed up to see him, in what he called “public opinion baths.”

The candidate who does countless of these early-state events must have the ability to inspire and impress, think on his feet, show endless patience and stamina. If he’s not up for it, or is a pretender, he will inevitably be exposed.

In comparison to the other candidates, Bloomberg is a Wizard of Oz candidate, shielded and inflated by his TV ads.

Another advantage of the traditional approach is that anyone can do it. Pete Buttigieg, the unknown mayor of a small Indiana town, finished strong in Iowa through sheer talent, tireless work and clever messaging.

All this said, perhaps Bloomberg will break all the rules and be the last man standing between Bernie Sanders and the cusp of the American presidency. Then, his spending might look to a lot of Democrats like a public service. There is also no denying that Bloomberg is a genuinely talented man.

Yet this style of campaigning shouldn’t be the norm. If Bloomberg succeeds, he will enrich many TV stations, consultants, pollsters and campaign workers, but impoverish our politics.

resident’s week shortened the week with markets closed Monday and most schools closed for the week allowing some time off with loved ones. What a great wrap for Valentine’s Day. Lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel singing, “Slow down, you move too fast, you’ve got to make the moment last” pursed my lips at moments. In between those moments the 2020 debate on whether the market was slowing down or not was continuing with new economic data points.

Economic readings reported the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing that producer price inflation in January came in above projections. This had headline inflation rising 0.5% month over month, marking the highest since October of 2018. PPI measures the change that producers receive for their domestic products.

This ultimately works it way to the consumer price inflation which is the gauge of something being more expense or not to us, the consumer. We have had very low inflation and the Federal Reserve has been

working to increase it to improve the health of the U.S. economy. This is a positive sign at this point since there are no fears of it being out of control. Another indication released was the January housing starts. They were stronger than expected and new permits surged to a near 13year high. Earlier in the week treasury prices inverted again. This has been a repeating concern, a historic marker for possible looming recession, since last year when it first inverted. Treasuries turned higher though after the inflation rose more than expected last month.

Updates on the Corona Virus reported two deaths in Iran. After testing positive for the new virus in the holy Shi’ite city of Qom, died the same day they tested positive for the respiratory illness. U. S. Senator’s Salary, are we getting our money’s worth?

Senator’s salary is $174,000 a year or $14,500 per month or $3,372.00 per week, in addition to other benefits such as health insurance and retirement.

The average yearly median wage in 2019 was $47,000 or $3,917 per month or $910.00 per week. Other benefits such as health insurance and retirement usually have to be paid by the worker.

This huge disparity in salaries is not based so much on education, experience, accomplishments and other qualifications such as a record of honesty and ethical behavior, but rather on your willingness to tow the party line which is indispensable if you want to perpetuate yourself in that position. Recently we were all witnesses, but with few exceptions to the rule, to Republican Senators towing the party line.

Instead, the Senate responded with platitudes, insipid and ludicrous arguments proffered by expensive and controversial attorneys and voted to acquit the President of any wrongdoing. Sadly the American tax payer has been short-

changed by this partisan decision.

The U. S. Senate failed in its sworn duty to conduct a fair and impartial trial by also turning a deaf ear to testimony heard in the House of Representatives that solidly implicated the President in wrong doing; evidence. This decision (to Impeach) was brought forth by career diplomats, decorated military personnel and civil servants with an impeccable reputation.

It is my sincere hope that in the voting booth, the electorate of this seriously divided country, set straight the wrongs perpetrated by Senators of the Republican Party, thwarting the rights of the American citizen to hold accountable its public servants. Hopefully this sham committed by Republican Senators is duly addressed by the electorate come election time who has the right and obligation to remove those Senators who failed in their duty to punish the guilty party and re-unify the country.

We returned to Hemet and met with Congressman Sonny Bono. He even came to Hemet to demonstrate with us. Thanks to him and other demonstrations were set up throughout the United States.

“HUD had the idea that we should live by a completely different situation that existed on the East Coast. What they were suggesting was totally assisted living whereas, we preferred to live independently.

Our attorney donated her time to our cause and wrote the amendments that needed to be put into the bill to have them ready for the Unruh Act in California. We knew we’re going to have trouble in Sacramento and we did, but finally got it through the legislature.”

She considers that to be the highlight of her 16 years on the City Council, but finally getting the new public library opened in downtown Hemet rates high on her list of accomplishments. She has served on more committees and panels than can be listed, among them Chairwoman of RCTC, Chairwoman for

the County Integrated Plan committee, Chairwoman for the Endangered Species K-Rat Committee.

“When I went on that Board, the K-Ray Agency was charging $2500 a house for K-Ray protection. The problem was that there were only one or two persons actually elected that Commission. The rest were staff I was encouraged to get more elected commissioners and we did.”

Robin has long been involved in Republican politics in a county that is one of the most conservative in the state, but I sensed some truly liberal ideas in our conversation.

She is a lovely blonde who wouldn’t allow a picture until she visited her hairstylist. A blonde but not a ‘dumb blonde.’ She is intelligent with a real down-home personality, but don’t ever take her to be weak in any instant. She has waded through more slings and arrows and probably has the battle scars to prove it, but she is one tough cookie and I don’t think anybody who would decide to take her on should underestimate her abilities.

She has survived political wars and many of her adversaries have made the mistake of taking her on and paid dearly for that mistake.

he rooms of Hemet’s Center for Spiritual Living were at full capacity this Saturday for the Peddlers Bazaar, a monthly event hosted by the Inspired Women Business Alliance (IWBA), a non-profit organization that supports women in business and the community.

The free event was an opportune time for women with small businesses to set up shop and offer their products to the Hemet/San Jacinto community; network with one another, and offer an eclectic variety of goods and services.

“Our goal is to strengthen women in business; to strengthen our families and our community,” says president of IWBA, Miranda Owens, who expressed her joy in witnessing the non-profit growth since

its establishment in 2016.

The program offers a range of services to help women succeed; there are business, computer and craft classes and extensive outreach efforts to lower income women. Success is in the numbers as Owens explains, “our first event, we had 15 vendors, and now we are upwards of 35.”

Many locals were inspired by the talent-laced

ideas these biz savvy women brought to the tables. A local who simply goes by Connie, wove her creativity into her small business, Roses by Connie, and sells beautifully fashioned flowers . . . flowers fashioned from plain, mundane coffee filters into colorfully detailed works of art.

Some, like Debbie Mummert, took a sweeter approach to their start-up.

Mummert, owner and pastry chef of "Hers truly, Debs Delicate Pastries" handed out bite size samples of to-die-for toffee, chocolate treats, cinnamon buns and other delectable goods to satisfy the everyone's sweet tooth.

Dr. Jeanne Hounshell, a local life coach and author of "This Precious Love," offered her services in helping others. Potential customers were invited to attend seminars where the doctor applies her knowledge of spiritual healing therapies, to live their most healthy, vibrant life possible.

The Peddlers Bazaar will continue on the third Saturday of each month at the Center for Spiritual Living: 40450 E. Stetson Ave. in Hemet.

VAC, The Diamond Valley Arts Center, located at 123 N. Harvard St., Hemet 92543 has two great eclectic shows coming up in the next two weeks.

Local Legend Rocky Zharp and the Blues Crackers Rocky Zharp and The Blues Crackers will perform Saturday, February 22, The doors open at 6:30 PM with the show starting at 7:00 PM. Admission is $20 for general admission and $15 for DVAC members. Student tickets are $5 for online pre-sale and $10 at the door. Tickets may be ordered online at the DVAC website (www.thedvac.org) or purchased at the Arts Center.

Rocky Zharp, born in Indiana, was given his first musical instrument, a harmoni-

ca, by his great grandmother when he was but 5 years old.

By age 17 he was working with the elderly Rev. Ervin Davis playing blues on the harmonica at picnics and on street corners for tips.

Glenn Frazier (Glenn "MannRaw" Frazier) has been playing the drums since the age of two. He has made appearances on several television networks accompanying different artists.

Appearances include CBS, FOX, KUSI, PBS, BET, and TBN to name a few.

Jerry Cox has played the Electric Bass professionally for almost 50 years "holding down the low end" with many great musicians all across America.

ogs, in their rambunctious domesticated way, can lead us overly civilized humans a step or two closer to the natural world. So it’s only fitting that the best dog movies have saluted that unruly canine spirit without a lot of artificial flavoring. Hollywood’s classic dog tales, like “Old Yeller” (1957) or “Lassie Come Home” (1943), are lyrical marvels of plainspoken storytelling — primal fables of love, loss, heart, and home — and so, in its way, was the last great dog movie, “Marley & Me” (2008), which treated the title pooch of John Grogan’s memoir as a scruffy agent of canine chaos who was also, in his way, a figure of faith.

That said, I’ve never had much patience for synthetic anthropomorphic dog comedies like “Beethoven” or “Benji” or “Turner & Hooch.” If I want to see a dog turned into a cartoon, I’d rather watch a cartoon.

“The Call of the Wild,” an adaptation of the Jack London classic that’s true to the spirit, i f not always the letter, of the 1903 novel (which

I admit, as a kid, I could never get through), is a dog movie that’s more concocted than it has any right to be. It was produced by 20th Century Studios, back when the company had a “Fox” in its name, but in this case there’s something almost poetically appropriate about the fact that the film is now emerging from the gates of the Disney empire. That’s because “The Call of the Wild,” directed by Chris Sanders (the co-director, with Dean DeBlois, of “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Lilo & Stitch”), is a semi-live-action film that nevertheless bounces along with the glibly overdone visual logic of an old Disney dog comedy from the 1960s.

The film’s style, to put it bluntly, is more than a bit fake.

Early on, when we meet Buck, a St. Bernard/Scotch Collie mix with a keen intelligence and adorable eyes, he’s ruling the roost of his big pastoral home in Santa Clara, California, and the way the film establishes what an innocently fearsome beast he is to have the cupboards of the kitchen

n Saturday February 15, Jerome Robinson and five of his very talented friends brought a "Touch of Vegas" to the Historic Hemet Theatre.

A small but enthusiastic crowd was on hand to hear an assortment of Pack Rat favorites, classic rock, R&B and even a bit of opera.

Every one of the singers was a Vegas veteran and the roar from the audience reflected the caliber of talent on the stage.

Meanwhile a few tickets remain for the Tribute to Marvin Gaye on Saturday February 22nd. However, tickets for the Tribute to the Bee Gees on March 7th have completely sold out.

shake, rattle, and roll as he bounds around the house.

He’s a very big dog, but all I could think was: Come on, he’s not frigging Godzilla!

Why the exaggerated effect?

Because that’s the film’s way of coddling the audience, treating us as if we needed a collective pat on the head. Buck doesn’t spend a lot time at the house before being stolen by an evil canine kidnapper, who trains him with a club and sells him into service as a sled dog. It’s the 1890s, and Buck lands in the bustling town of Skagway, Alaska, gateway to the Yukon and the dreams of a thousand prospectors. As soon as he hooks up with Perrault (Omar Sy) and François (Cara Gee), who run a mail-delivery route for the U.S. government, he learns how to be part of a dog team — but here, too, his exuberance is communicated with sled-dog sequences that have the feel of stylized CG action rides, because that’s essentially what they are.

The filmmakers employ a blend of live action and digital enhancement, and I guess you could say it’s an achievement that we can’t totally tell where the one leaves off and the other begins. But what we do know is that everything we’re seeing is a shade faster, more bumptious, more animated than real life.

Does that mean it’s more exciting? I’d say that makes it less exciting.

In episodes like the one where Buck takes on and defeats the leader of the pack, a snarling Siberian husky named Spitz, or rescues François after she falls under the ice, you know you aren’t seeing the events play out with the kind of transcendent naturalism that was so enthralling, 37 years ago, in the wild-hound-inthe-Arctic landmark “Never Cry Wolf.” It may come as a shock to learn that “The Call of the Wild” was shot

by Janusz Kaminski, who in his work with Steven Spielberg (“Saving Private Ryan,” “Schindler’s List,” “Munich,” “The War of the Worlds”) became a maestro of graystreaked deep-focus existential realism, qualities that would have worked marvelously in a dog drama set in the wilderness. There are visually enthralling moments in “The Call of the Wild,” including an impressive avalanche, but most of the film has an impersonal look of sun-dappled squareness. It’s a picture-postcard saga with a real-dog-who’s-also-a-CGdog, and that may lead some to dismiss the movie as a dog.

And yet…much as I wish the filmmakers had put more

trust in the organic heartbeat of their material, “The Call of the Wild” gets better as it goes along. In Skagway, Buck forms a momentary connection with John Thornton (Harrison Ford), a furry figure who’s been cut loose from his family by tragedy. Buck finds Thornton’s harmonica in the snow and brings it to him (they don’t see each other again for a while), but we can already tell that this is going to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. And the way Harrison Ford plays it, it really is. Ford acts with pure soul here (he also narrates the film with his lovely storybook growl); it’s a minimalist performance, mostly very reactive, but the saintly gruffness of Ford’s thick-graybearded, sad-eyed presence helps to nudge Buck to life as a character. “The Call of the Wild” turns into a movie about a difficult but devoted dog and the master who’s a bit of a lonely old mutt himself. For all the wholesome cheesiness of much of the film, you’d have to have a pretty hard heart not to be touched by it.

In John Thornton, Buck, at last, has found a master who’s worthy of him. That’s why he keeps running away with bottles of whiskey — he can sense how the booze dampens Thornton’s spirit.

The two move into an abandoned prospector’s cabin and even hit pay dirt, but the film gets very Zen about this. It’s all about Thornton rediscovering how to live in the moment — which, of course, is what dogs, at least in human society, are the masters of. There’s a villain who must be defeated (totally flat, boilerplate stuff), but as Buck spends more time in the wilderness and begins to fuse with it, he becomes the free creature he was meant to be. He cuts himself loose from the artificial, concocted world. You only wish that the whole movie had done the same thing.

“That’s what makes it so unique,” Hawkins said.

“The students are able to come back and play with the teachers. Any other group can come join the orchestra, too.” He added there can be as few as seven people and as many as 35, but each performance exposes the kids to connections between music and society.

Hemet High’s Girls Soccer Team Advance In CIF KYLE HEADLEE | STAFF WRITER

T

he Lady Bulldogs have been on a roll this season, and it doesn’t seem like they are ready to call it quits any time soon. The girls have earned an impressive record this season, 20 with only three losses and two ties. The girls appear to be miles ahead of their competition. The roster is made of a healthy mixture of upper and lower classmen. Which means there is a bright future for the Bulldogs on the soccer field. This team has been built with high power scoring and tenacious defense in mind.

They have scored 91 goals on the year. While only allowing 17. The Bulldogs are currently on a 9-game

winning streak.

The Hemet High Bulldogs didn’t just win the Mountain Pass League; they are also the number one ranked team in Division 4. No other team has scored more goals than them. However, Bloomington High School’s defense has been elite this season, only allowing eight goals on the year.

Maxpreps.com has the Bulldogs listed as their favorites to win the CIF championship this year, and it looks like they could do it.

Hemet has a tough game coming up against Torrance High School, they are ranked 149th in the state and have outscored their opponents 52-20 on the year.

On paper, the Bulldogs should beat them; they

The biggest threats to the bulldogs are Bloomington and Sierra Canyon.

Luckily for the Bulldog’s, those two giants may have to face each other in order to make it to the championship round in the tournament. Sierra Canyon is ranked 101 in the state and has a 2-1 goal ratio

on the season. Bloomington is ranked 118 in the state. The game between these two should be exciting, and the Bulldogs will have their eyes on them.

All of these girls would love to bring a CIF championship home to Hemet.

by Football & Basketball.

Football & Basketball get all of the love and attention of the student body, boosters, and Athletic Director. These girls are on a mission to prove that they deserve the recognition.

It has been impressive what Coach Steve Strutz has been about to get done this year. Last year Hemet made it to the

Semi-Finals of the CIF playoffs. It’s not often that teams are able to repeat success, but it’s arguable that this team is even better than last year. It’s scary to think that some of their best players are only freshmen.

Division 4 better watch out, because these girls are here to stay and looking to make history.

he girl’s basketball team at San Jacinto Valley Academy is quickly making a name for themselves around Southern California, dominating day in and day out. Right now, they have a 15-1 overall record and are looking like the favorites to secure the “Chip” this season.

They have some tough opponents ahead of them, but they have what it takes to go the whole way. The team is coming fresh off a victory against La Puente 58-45, next up is Santa Paula is ranked 504 in the state while San Jacinto Valley Academy is ranked 433. On paper, the San Jacinto Valley Academy girls should win this game.

As long as they keep playing the way they have that’s gotten them this far.

Jheisymae Artagame is only a sophomore but is having an amazing season.

Artagame transferred from San Jacinto High School and was forced to sit out the first half of the season. So when she got the chance to start playing, she wasted no time.

Artagame is averaging: 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 steals per game. She has a quick release and has a really high basketball IQ. Krislyn Mozga is also a beast in her own right, averaging 11 points per game, 5 assists, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals. She is also only a sophomore. Kalia Anady is having quite the season; she is putting up double 7’s. Seven points a game and seven rebounds. Rayann Dudley grabs about seven rebounds a game as well.

In true Mamba fashion, the leading scorer for the Wolves is wearing #24, and she wears it with pride. Princess Mccauley is putting up 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. She is, Misses Double-Double and plays with a type of tenacity that

The crazy thing about this team is: it is loaded with underclassmen; in fact, there is only one junior and no seniors on

the roster. Get used to hearing these lady’s names now, because they are only coming up and there are four more years left of their reign.

rturo Ojeda Jr is a name you should be used to reading by now. He has been making headlines all year long, starting with his excellent play on the football field and continuing it through wrestling season. Ojeda has been lights out when performing on wrestling mats this season. He has really come into his own his senior year and wants to leave nothing on the table. Although he was the best offensive lineman in the league this year and helped to lead his Tiger to a deep playoff run, he didn’t really get the respect he felt he deserved from scouts. The potential to play at the next level is a huge dream to Ojeda, all that built up emotion from football season has led him to become a wrecking ball in the wrestling scene. When he comes into the gym, his opponents begin to sweat, the aura of the gym is filled with fear. It’s al-

most like the boogeyman has entered the room and everyone is scared to look under the bed.

Ojeda destroyed the competition at CIF’s earning the right to call himself the back to back CIF champion, but it wasn’t without drama. Earlier in the season, Ojeda suffered his first and only loss against Centennial Heavyweight, Issac Lopez.

The loss was controversial, as Ojeda pinned himself. When the CIF matchups were announced, Ojeda took notice of Issac Lopez’s position and quickly realized he was on the other side of the bracket.

Ojeda circled his name and went on a rampage, doing whatever he could to earn his chance at retribution. Ojeda was determined to prove to everyone watching that he should have beat him the first time. He wasn’t going to waste his chance this time.

El brote ha causado multitud de complicaciones y podría llevar a Beijing a aplazar su congreso anual, el mayor evento político del año en el país, para evitar que la gente viaje a la capital mientras continúen los contagios.

El salón del automóvil de Beijing, que se celebra cada dos años y estaba previsto para abril, quedó demorado como muchos eventos deportivos y de entrenamiento, que se retrasaron o cancelaron para evitar desplazamientos que puedan propagar el virus.

A pesar de las estrictas normas sobre uso de mascarillas y trajes de protección, entre las víctimas hay trabajadores sanitarios, especialmente en los

inicios del brote.

En el anuncio sobre el deceso de Liu, la comisión de salud de Wuhan dijo que había formado parte de la batalla contra el virus desde el inicio y había realizado “contribuciones importantes en el trabajo de lucha y control del nuevo coronavirus”, señaló el aviso.

nfrentados a cientos de demandas por abusos sexuales, los Boy Scouts of America se declararon en bancarrota el martes con la esperanza de armar un plan de compensación de víctimas que permita a la organización de 110 años seguir adelante. La solicitud ante la corte federal de bancarrotas en Wilmington, Delaware, pone en marcha la que podría ser una de las mayores y más complejas quiebras jamás registradas en Estados Unidos. Decenas de abogados han reclamado acuerdos en nombre de miles de hombres que dicen haber sufrido abusos hace décadas cuando eran niños exploradores a manos de exploradores mayores u otros líderes, y que no han pudieron demandar hasta una reciente modificación en la prescripción de delitos de varios estados.

Al acudir a la corte, los Scouts pueden paralizar esas demandas por el momento. Pero en último término podrían verse

obligados a vender parte de sus numerosas propiedades, incluidos campamentos y zonas de senderismo, para reunir dinero para un fondo de compensación que podría superar los mil millones de dólares.

l gobierno de Donald Trump anunció el martes que suspenderá las leyes federales de contratación para acelerar la construcción del muro en la frontera con México.

El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional dijo que la suspensión de las normas de adquisición de materiales permitirá acelerar la construcción de 283 kilómetros (177 millas) de muro en California, Arizona, Nuevo México y Texas.

Las 10 leyes suspendidas incluyen los requisitos de permitir la competencia abierta, justificar las selecciones y recibir las garantías de un contratista antes de iniciar las obras.

El secretario interino de Seguridad Nacional, Chad Wolf, apela a una ley de 2005 que lo autoriza a suspender las leyes de construcción de barreras fronterizas. Los secretarios bajo la presidencia de Trump han decretado 15 suspensiones y el expresidente George W. Bush decretó cinco, pero ésta es la primera vez que se aplican a las normas de contratación. l brote de un virus que comenzó en China “no está fuera de control pero es una situación muy peligrosa”, dijo el martes el secretario general de Naciones Unidas a The Associated Press.

“Los riesgos son enormes y necesitamos están preparados en todo el mundo para eso”, explicó Antonio Guterres durante una entrevista.

Según Guterres, si el virus se extiende a países con “menos capacidad en sus servicios médicos” se necesitaría mucha solidaridad internacional. Egipto reportó recientemente su primer caso, despertando el temor a una posible propagación por el continente africano.

El brote ha infectado a más de 73.000 personas en todo el mundo y ha causado más de 1.800 muertes, casi todas en China. La Organización Mundial de la Salud nombró

l asesinato de una niña de 7 años en el extremo sur de Ciudad de México ha atizado el enojo colectivo por la muerte de mujeres en el país, incluyendo una que fue apuñalada y desollada hace pocos días.

La procuraduría capitalina informó el lunes que las autoridades identificaron el fin de semana los restos de Fátima, quien estudiaba la primaria y desapareció el 11 de febrero. Bajo la ley mexicana los fiscales no pueden divulgar el nombre completo de una víctima.

El cuerpo de la niña fue hallado en una bolsa y abandonado en una zona rural el sábado, y fue identificado mediante pruebas genéticas.

No se ha esclarecido la causa de defunción. Cinco personas han sido interrogadas en conexión con el caso, y las autoridades tienen video del momento en que una persona se la lleva.

La procuradora capitalina Ernestina Godoy dijo que el homicidio de la niña no quedará impune. La investigación se enfoca en identificar a la mujer que se aleja de la escuela con ella, según se aprecia en el video.

Guillermo Antón Godínez, abuelo de la pequeña, dijo el lunes que su hija llegó a la escuela 15 o 20 minutos después de que la mujer se llevó a la niña. Su nieta salió del plantel vestida con su uniforme, pero la mujer le colocó una camiseta y pantalones deportivos, ambos de color verde, agregó.

En un principio le dijeron a su hija que las autoridades no podían iniciar la búsqueda en las primeras 72 horas después de su desaparición, señaló. Sin embargo, la procuraduría indicó que se emitió una alerta amber por la desaparición de la niña el mismo día en que los parientes reportaron que no estaba.

El portavoz de la procuraduría Ulises Lara ofreció una recompensa equivalente a cerca de 100.000 dólares por cualquier información que ayude a dar con el paradero de la persona que recogió a la niña a la salida de la escuela.

La jefa de gobierno de la ciudad, Claudia Sheinbaum, acompañó personalmente a la madre de la niña a realizar los trámites necesarios para recoger el cuerpo de su hija.

“Vamos a acompañar a la familia y tiene que haber justicia”, dijo la funcionaria.

Por su parte, Maria Magdalena Antón, madre de la menor, se veía enojada e indignada afuera de las oficinas de la procuraduría. “Se tiene que hacer justicia, por la mía y por todas las mujeres”, afirmó.

Dijo que los investigadores hicieron que la familia esperara durante horas y que atravesara la ciudad para siquiera poder levantar un reporte de persona desaparecida. Otros familiares acusaron a la policía de no actuar con rapidez.

“Pudo haber sido encontrada con vida, pero nadie nos hizo caso”, dijo Sonia López, tía de la pequeña.

López señaló también que desde hace tiempo había cuestionamientos sobre la capacidad de la madre para cuidar a sus hijos, pero que las agencias de salud y asistencia social de la ciudad no les habían ayudado.

Posteriormente, familiares y amigos se reunieron para velar a la niña en la casa de la familia.

Muchos familiares y comentaristas pidieron cambios urgentes a los protocolos de seguridad en escuelas primarias. En las escuelas públicas de zonas urbanas de México, los niños simplemente salen a la calle después de clases. Aunque con frecuencia sus padres los esperan afuera, no es responsabilidad de la escuela asegurarse de que alguien autorizado los recogerá.

La Secretaría de Gobernación señaló en un comunicado el lunes por la tarde que los medios de comunicación no deberían publicar detalles personales ni imágenes de niños relacionadas con un delito, ya sea que sean los autores, las víctimas o testigos.

La capital mexicana ha registrado varias manifestaciones por los feminicidios en los últimos meses, y en algunas de ellas los participantes han vandalizado monumentos y otros inmuebles.

Los asesinatos se han convertido en un desafío político para el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador, quien ha dicho que las protestas en contra de la violencia son un intento de desviar la atención de sus programas sociales.

La semana pasada, el mandatario mostró escasa paciencia hacia quienes le increpaban sobre las medidas del gobierno para frenar los feminicidios.

El lunes, López Obrador defendió su gestión afirmando que “estamos trabajando para que no haya feminicidios”.

Sin embargo, criticó a quienes pintaron las puertas y paredes del Palacio Nacional durante una protesta el viernes organizada por el feminicidio de Escamilla.
