ARLENE LEHTONE | CONTRIBUTED S AINT PATRICK, the patron saint of Ireland, became part of Irish heritage, through his service across Ireland in the 5th century. Born in 4th century AD, into an affluent Romano-British family, his father (a Roman-British army officer) and grandfather were deacons in the Christian church. Patricius was his Roman name, but he became recognized as Patrick. When Irish raiders came ashore, they abducted 16-year-old Patrick and others, selling Patrick into slavery in Ireland for six years (mostly imprisoned). Patrick had a dream of sighting God, and a legend says that God told him to escape on a ship, and return to Britain, which he did, continuing to France. He joined a monastery and studied under St. Germain (the Bishop of Aux

churches. After almost 30 years of evangelism, this cherished Irish saint passed away March 17, 461 A.D, and traditionally was buried at Downpatrick. That

MONEY 5 Important Financial Decisions: Should You DIY or Hire a Pro?

STATEPOINT | CONTRIBUTED F inancial decisions can have a big impact on your future and the future of your loved ones. Good financial decisions you make on your own can save thousands of dollars, but according to experts, there are some decisions that may be better left to the professionals.
1. Do your taxes. There is no one-size-fits-all answer but if you don’t have dependents or investments, don’t own a business, and have the time and patience, you may be able to file a simple tax form on your own fairly easily. As you gain significant income and your financial situation becomes more complex, a pro might be helpful. 2. Buy or sell a house. Weigh the pros and cons to determine the best plan. Choosing the “For Sale by Owner” route lets you avoid paying a commission to real estate agents, which averages 5 to 6% of the home’s sale price. On the other hand, your house may get less traffic compared to what it would receive if it were included in professional listing platforms. You’d also need to be prepared to handle all the paperwork, organize open houses and screen potential buyers yourself.
3. Purchase life insurance. Life is always changing, and it’s important to make sure your coverage is keeping up so that your loved ones are protected in the event that something happens to you. Because life insurance is so critical, companies like Erie Insurance recommend always working with a pro instead of going the DIY route. For example, term life insurance provides coverage for a specific number of years, while a whole life policy is designed to last a lifetime. But which type is best for you -- and how much you actually need to protect your family -- is something your trusted insurance agent can help you determine. In addition, studies show that people often overestimate the cost of life insurance, sometimes assuming it costs as much as three times more than it does. In addition to being surprised at how affordable it is, you also might be surprised at how quick and easy

it is to get a quote.
4. Create a retirement savings plan. The right advisor can help you figure out a monthly amount of money to set aside in a 401(k) or Roth IRA and choose the right investments to reach your longterm goals. If you want to DIY, there are free calculators available online that use your savings and spending habits to look at your financial situation. The federal government also offers a calculator to estimate your social security benefits.
5. Write a will. This is an area where many experts say it may be advisable to hire a pro. Estate-planning software can be generic, as it considers compliance across the country instead of state-specific laws. It’s important to use the correct legal language in a will and be knowledgeable about estate and inheritance taxes when leaving behind property. As part of estate planning, you may want to consider addressing whom you’d want to care for your minor children in the event of your passing. Federal regulations prevent minors from legally owning property, but they can be beneficiaries.
Determine whether you have the right skill set and time to take on these five important financial decisions. Doing it yourself can save money but the long-term result could be costly.

THE 7 ARTS day has been honored as St. Patrick’s Day, to celebrate the baptizing of Ireland.
Dancing in the Wild West In the early days of the wild west, pants were made from wool and canvas occasionally was worn in summertime. Throughout the Gold Rush of the 1840’s, denim overalls were preferred because it was inexpensive and "breathable.". Levi Strauss enhanced the design by attaching copper rivets, and by the 1870’s, this was used by ranchers and cowboys. Leather chaps were often worn to protect the cowboy’s legs from cactus spines and discourage the material from wearing out. Ladies sported knee-length prairie skirts, gingham dresses, or suede fringed skirts made from Native American outfits, so get out your Western-style outfits for this dance.
The following bands will play for the month of March: • March 4 American Made. •March 11 Rainbow Cottage. St. Patrick’s Day theme. •March 18 Trail Mix. Western theme. •March 25 Marvels These popular Wednesday Night Dances for seniors are from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Admission is $6.00 per person, proper attire is required, and alcohol is not allowed. PLAY BALL Spring Baseball is around the corner for High School Athletes
Spring sports are around the corner and you know what that means: baseball season is here. Let’s take a look at how the teams finished last year, and make some way-to-early-but-interesting predictions on how they may place this season. Last year Tahquitz finished at the top of the league with a 17-8-1 record. They outscored their opponents 147 runs to 74. They made it into the playoffs but lost in the first round against Santa Margarita 7-1. Tahquitz graduated six seniors at the end of the season including their catcher and four pitchers. This means that coming into this season they will have an entirely new pitching staff as well as a new catcher. It will be interesting to see how Coach Savage was able to fill those spots and rebuild his roster. Last year Dylan Plutner, Ezra Farmer and Jacob Hyde are the only returning pitchers from last year’s CIF roster. This season’s Tahquitz roster is carrying seven seniors, so there is definitely veteran leadership, especially from Travis Booth who comes from the football team. Citrus Hill also made it into the playoffs last year with a 17-11 record, but there glory was shortlived: they had a first round exit against Moreno Valley. They graduated six seniors of their 25 man roster which means they have plenty of new talent on this season’s team. Expect them to be very competitive against the other teams in the league.

15-11 record. They were outscored by their opponents 125-109 and went on a horrendous five game losing streak to close out the season. They only graduated five seniors. Even being third in the league, they still made it into the playoffs, but lost in the first round against Ramona. The Tigers will be aiming to finish the season in the top three again this year. They have their work cut out for them.
The Bulldogs went 12-13-1 on the season and missed a CIF berth. They only graduated four seniors, so they have virtually the same exact team coming back, but with the addition of four new players. Best case scenario is that the Bulldogs will experience addition by subtraction this season and the four replacement players will come in and play better than the four they lost. Otherwise the Bulldogs are looking at a similar finish as last year hovering around .500.
West Valley finished their season last year with a 9-13 record, what is odd is they outscored their opponents 107 runs to 83. The runs just didn’t come at the right time. They have a new coach this season and some new faces on the team. They only graduated two seniors last season. This season they will dress nine seniors.
Beaumont finished the season 9-17 last season, they graduated six seniors. Don’t expect much to change from the Cougars, unless they have a secret weapon they have been hiding in their farm system (JV/Freshman Teams).
Notable Returning Players According To The Numbers: Last season’s best hitter, Marty Munoz (Citrus Hills) will return. He posted a .447 BA on the year. Jacob Mcmillon and Ethan Leonard from Hemet were both top five in home runs last season at 59 & 58 respectively, and they are ready to lead the Bulldogs offense this year. West Valley returns the two leaders in steals from last season Gabe Castro (12) and Issac Sandoval (11). Issac Sandoval is also last year’s strikeout leader (68) and banked in one no hitter.
Our “Way-to-early-but-intersting” power rankings:
1-Citrus Hill
2-Tahquitz
3-Hemet
4-San Jacinto
5- West Valley
6- Beaumont
PREVIEW Preview the Softball Season before it starts
The girls in the Mountain Pass League are ready to lace up their cleats, hit the field, and get to work. Softball is back and we couldn’t be more excited. Last season Beaumont finished as the number one team in the Mountain Pass League with an 18-8 record and 10-0 in league play. They graduated six girls out of 18, so they have a healthy mix of returning and new players. They lost in the first round of the playoffs against El Modena. El Modena scored ten runs and held Beaumont scoreless in the game. The Cougars will be coming back with a chip on their shoulder and ready to play some ball.
The West Valley Mustangs finished in second place last season. They graduated a host of seniors (9), at the end of the season. This could be troublesome for the Mustangs: they will have a bunch of new girls on the team. Last season they outscored their opponents 217-111, it will be tough to replicate that kind KYLE HEADLEE | STAFF WRITER of production. However, we know ACE pitcher Serena Herbranson will be returning for her senior year. Herbranson was “lights out” last season: her pitches have major heat on them and batters struggle tracking them down. With a whole other year of training under her belt she will be dangerous in the circle this season.
San Jacinto placed third last year and posted an impressive run ratio against their opponents ,219-97. They couldn’t keep the momentum up in the playoffs, losing in the second round against Wilson. San Jacinto only graduated three seniors last year, but among those was their best pitcher Alexis “DLC” De La Cruz. Their team is well-built and put together: they should put together another playoff run this season.
Hemet came in fourth place last season. Their record was 8-16, but they only graduated one senior. They have a lot of returning players this season who are looking to get revenge. Their pitching staff led by Kassidy Long and Payton Priefer may be the best duo in the league at this point, with all the other schools graduating starting pitchers last season. It will be exciting to see if the duo can lead their team to more wins than last year.
Tahquitz finished fifth place with a 5-13 record and graduated six seniors last year. Hopefully they have some fresh talent coming up to replace those girls, otherwise this could be another hard season for the Lady Titans.
Citrus Hill finished last with a 4-18 record, 0-10 in league. There isn’t much known about their roster due to lack of information available online. It is safe to assume that unless there were major changes in their roster, it will be much of the same for the Hawks.
Notable Returning Players According To The Numbers:
Tahquitz’s Shelby Durant who led the league in Batting Average (.556), West Valleys Amarah Farley second in Batting Average

HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP
Two Time Heavyweight Champ Ready To Return To The Cage
There is a lot to dive into here, so let’s get to it. Winter sports have started for the middle schools in the valley: this includes boys and girls basketball and boys soccer. It’s fun to go out and watch the middle-schoolers play: you get a chance to see what athletes have the potential to play in high school, as well as getting the opportunity to see them grow and develop into elite athletes. One of these athletes that are standing out is Ethan Saenz of Dartmouth. Saenz is only a 6th grader but is the starting point guard at Dartmouth middle school. He is still young and with that, a little undersized, however, he doesn’t let that affect his game. Saenz is a natural scorer but does a great job at filling out the stat sheet: he gets assists and rebounds on a regular basis and plays “in your face” defense. Last week Saenz and the rest of his team put the smackdown on Diamond Valley. The final score was 36-6. Keep working hard middle schoolers, you never know when we are watching!
San Jacinto’s Arturo Ojeda Jr. finished his league wrestling season as the Heavyweight champ. He was undefeated on the year and has been dominating gyms all winter. Ojeda’s wrestling season will continue with CIF and State tournaments on the way. He is positioned to make a deep run in the brackets and could potentially win the whole thing.
Citrus Hill is currently in the KYLE HEADLEE | STAFF WRITER running to finish as the league champs in boys soccer, with an 11-5 record. Hemet High’s girl’s soccer team is expected to finish in first place in the league this year. They have a 16-3-2 record and have scored 79 goals to their opponents 15. They have been awfully dominating this year and could potentially make a deep run in the CIF playoffs. In boys basketball, Citrus Hill has dominated the league. It’s important to note some of the basketball players that stood out this season as exceptional athletes who should be playing at the next level when they graduate: Tahquitz’s Jaden Haywood, Citrus Hill’s Brain Brown Jr., West Valley’s Elijah Edwards, Beaumont’s Riley Sutton, and San Jacinto’s Jorden Hudson. All of these young men played hard all season long and showed the true spirit of “Mamba Mentality.” In girl’s basketball, Hemet and Beaumont are neck and neck, although Hemet has a better overall record. Beaumont’s leading ladies; Jada Long and Jana Roman aren’t ready to call it quits just yet though. The Freshman and Sophomore tandem is going to keep playing until the final whistle in hopes to break into a CIF bracket. If they don’t, expect both of them to be a force to be reckoned with next season. With a full year of training under their belts, they will be a problem for the opposition.
Well, that’s it for the winter sports round up! Spring sports will be starting soon, so until then... stay tuned.
DAWGS: Dawgs want to prove they have the best pitching staff | Photo by Kyle Headlee

(.519), along with Beaumont’s Julia Sheppard, who hit ten home runs last year and West Valley’s Serena Herbranson who hit five are all stand-outs.
San Jacinto’s Lea Iribe and Maya Felipe both were top 5 (2&3 respectively) in RBI’s last season (33&31).
Amarah Farley and Cayla Crawford led the league in stolen bases last year (17 &16). Kassidy Long(, Hemet, Julia Shephard, Beaumont, & Serena Herbranson and West Valley were top 5 in strikeouts (73,61,44 respectively) last season.
