eer flowed, music played, and guests enjoyed an unforgettable evening at Soboba Casino Resort’s first Oktoberfest celebration on October 5. More than 1,000 visitors had the opportunity to sample 36 different types of draft beers and authentic German cuisine at food stations offering an array of sweet desserts, savory meats and sauerkraut laden dishes. Special sauces were ordered for this event and all gingerbread hearts at the dessert station were made specifically for the occasion.

Each corner of the Event Center offered a distinct focus: Schnapps, café, wine and souvenirs. Seating was traditional Oktoberfest style of long tables with about 20 chairs each.

“In true German style, nobody ever needs to dine alone – tables are shared between family, friends and strangers alike,” said German-native Victor Mortazavi, SCR’s Food and Beverage Director.

n Tuesday, October 8th, at about 2AM, City of Hemet Police Officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2400 block of W Oakland Ave, Hemet.

Officers located Ricardo Curiel, a 31-year old male, suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso. Family members were surrounding the victim. Ricardo was transported to Riverside University Health System where he succumbed to his injuries.

Though AMR medics responded as quickly as police could clear the area, victim Nathaniel “Nate D” Houston was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.

Coachella Valley's Desert X to take part in Saudi Exhibition CNS | CONTRIBUTED

he government of Saudi Arabia, which suffers from a battered image and seeks to open itself to tourism and expand cultural ties with Western countries, has found a willing partner in the Coachella Valley-based contemporary art biennial, Desert X, which said this week it will collaborate on an exhibition in the kingdom in early 2020, which was reported on Tuesday.

Desert X consisted of large-scale site-specific works staged across the Coachella Valley in 2017 and again in 2019. The new exhibition, Desert X AlUla, will be held in northwestern Saudi Arabia and funded by the government's Royal Commission for AlUla, the Los Angeles

Times reported.

Although the Saudi exhibition signals growing international interest in Desert X, three of 14 members on the organization's board of directors resigned over the decision to work with a government responsible for human rights abuses and the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The three are artist Ed Ruscha, art historian and curator Yael Lipschutz and philanthropist and former fashion stylist Tristan Milanovich, according to The Times.

Desert X founder and board President Susan Davis defended the collaboration as an opportunity to generate "a new dialogue, one that reaches across boundaries and borders."

The suspect is said to be a light-skinned adult black male wearing a red shirt, black hoodie and black pants.

The alleged assailant was last seen running away from the scene. Onlookers said that Houston, a resident of Hemet, was having an argument across the street, possibly with the assailant, when he was followed and gunned down.

"To pretend it's about some sort of dialogue when you're receiving money from the Saudi royal family -- this isn't about dialogue among artists, it's about striking a deal with a national government that has committed a horrific genocide in Yemen, that is

completely undemocratic and that has an appalling record of discrimination against the LGBTQ community," Lipschutz said.

A year ago, Khashoggi, a Saudi dissident and Washington Post columnist, was killed inside the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul.

The CIA concluded that the country's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, ordered the assassination, a finding the prince denies, though he did accept "full responsibility" for the killing in a recent "60 Minutes" interview.

Davis said that Desert X organizers -- other founding board members include collector Beth Rudin DeWoody and former Palm Springs Art Museum Director Steven A. Nash -- spent months solicit-

ing artists' opinions and reaching out to other arts organizations and individuals who had worked in the Middle East. The board had "long conversations," she said, and a "large majority" voted to pursue the project, The Times reported.

Desert X AlUla, which is scheduled to run January 31 to March 7, is co-curated by Desert X artistic director Neville Wakefield and two Saudi women, Raneem Farsi and Aya Alireza. Artists will create large-scale outdoor works responding to the locale: in a canyon, surrounded by towering sandstone rock formations, across about one mile of the AlUla desert. The exhibition will coincide with AlUla's annual winter at Tantora music festival, which start-

ed in 2018.

AlUla is a historic area that the Royal Commission envisions as an "open museum" focused on heritage, nature and the arts. Archaeological and historical sites are being conserved, representatives have said. The area is home to the country's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient city of Hegra.

Desert X AlUla is part of the crown prince's economic, cultural and social reform plan, called Vision 2030, which includes opening the region to tourism. Last week, Saudi Arabia announced a new visa program that will allow tourists from 49 countries, who aren't traveling for religious purposes, to enter the country and stay up to three months, The Times reported.

Man Suspected of Fatally Shooting Son

A Hemet octogenarian allegedly gunned down his 31-year-old son October 8 during a confrontation at the suspect’s residence.

Salvador Aceves Curiel, 84 was arrested and booked into the Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million, according to Hemet police Lt. Jeff Davis.

The suspect allegedly shot Ricardo Curiel once in the upper body with a handgun about 2 a.m. in the 2400 block of Oakland Avenue, near Kirby Street. What prompted the confrontation was not revealed.

Other family members were present during the shooting, and police officers were summoned immediately, according to Davis. They arrived to find Curiel’s relatives standing around the wounded man who was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died a short time later, according to the lieutenant.

Salvador Curiel was questioned and taken into custody without a struggle.

Trial proceedings resume on October 9 in the Riverside County Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta with pretrial motions being heard today ahead of jury selection The defendant's case was transferred from the Banning Justice Center to the Southwest Justice Center in Murrieta, where Riverside County Superior Court Kelly Hanson heard pretrial motions related to scheduling, proposed witnesses and other matters.

Hanson is expected to summon prospective jurors for screening as to their availability and qualifications Tuesday or Wednesday and testimony is likely to begin next week.

According to court records, Steward has prior convictions for assault with a firearm and possession of drugs for sale.

San Jacinto slaying of 40 year old woman

On the morning of April 29, 2017, Latoya Calhoun, 40 was killed by multiple gunshots while riding in a car with convicted felon Traevon Denae Stewart, 43, and was then shoved out of the moving vehicle into a ditch in the 2600 block of Esplanade Avenue near Kirby Street in San Jacinto. Paramedics arriving minutes later pronounced her dead at the scene. Stewart was arrested in Banning two days later along with Michael Wayne Bird who was charged as accessory after the fact. A possible motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

On Tuesday, October 8, 2019, deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a traffic collision near the intersection of Bundy Canyon Rd and Christopher Lane, in the City of Wildomar. Upon arrival, deputies learned a pedestrian was walking in the eastbound lane of Bundy Canyon Rd and was struck by a tractor trailer combination, also traveling east on Bundy Canyon Rd. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

The Lake Elsinore Station Traffic Reconstruction Team is conducting a full investigation into the cause of the collision. At this time, it is unknown if alcohol/drugs may be a factor in this collision. Bundy Canyon Rd, in both directions, was closed for approximately 5 hours during the investigation. The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

I

n our first game this week we take you to Titan Stadium, where the Tahquitz Titans hosted their cross town rivals the West Valley Mustangs. Tahquitz and West Valley have been rivals since Tahquitz opened in 2007, forcing a very promising group of football players to split up.

In 2006 the West Valley Freshman Football team had an impressive 8-2 record, blowing out their opponents on a regular basis.

Half of the team was relocated to Tahquitz and the other half remained at West Valley. Players from that Freshman team went on to receive scholarships, earn all-league honors, and play in many CIF games, but for different schools.

Both teams had to work off a lot of nerves in the beginning of the game.

Tahquitz scored a defensive touchdown from a failed hand off attempt.

The score quickly was 7-0.

Tahquitz wouldn’t let up either. Their offense looked electric, making quick welltimed throws. Tahquitz also found success when running the ball against West Valley. At the start of the fourth quarter Tahquitz was leading 24-6.

That's when West Valley seemed to wake up.

They started playing the way their offense is designed to play: quick slants to their wide receivers and bubble screens to their speed guys. West Valley was able to get back into the game at 24-20. Their

defense made an incredible stand and got the ball back. With only 8 seconds left in the game and across mid-field they had time for just one play. The last time they lost was in 2010 against Beaumont High School. Citrus came into the game with a 44-0 win streak against league opponents. Hemet embraced the underdog role and welcomed their opponents with attitude. The game was a defensive battle and Hemet showed that they are no one’s doormat.

In the fourth quarter the score was 7-7. The game was filled with huge hits, trash talk, and aggression.

Hemet would keep their

composure and the offense would march down the field with less than two minutes to play. The ball was in the red zone, but it was fourth down. Coach Gregovich had a decision to make: go for it or trust his first year senior kicker Asaiah Aguilar (Asaiah is a soccer standout for Hemet High). Coach Gregovich decided he would put the game in the leg of his kicker. Asaiah Aguilar drilled the game winner and made history that night: Hemet never beat Citrus before last Friday. Now we are left to wonder: did David slay Goliath, or did they just awaken a sleeping giant?

Beaumont thought they were the team to beat in the league, averaging of 40 points a game in the first five games of the season.

However, all of their first five opponents were ranked much lower than them in the Maxpreps California Rankings, (478, 910, 1007, 732, 809.). Beaumont was feeling confident with their 5-0 record coming into Friday night. San Jacinto had quite a different story this season: coming into Friday night they had record 3-2 record and played some very difficult opponents in the first half of their season.

San Jacinto’s opponents were respectively ranked 253, 97, 301, 133, and 145.

San Jacinto also averaged 21 points per game, but they have also been playing with a handicap: senior receiver Antoine Sullivan has been sitting out. Having

fter a crazy, hectic previous week, some teams in the Mountain Pass league will look to keep up the momentum while others will seek to get back into the win column.

In our "Game of the Week" we will take you to San Jacinto High School as the West Valley Mustangs come into town and try to take SJ down.

Historically San Jacinto has dominated this matchup.

San Jacinto is currently ranked 129 in the state.

They have dropped quite a bit from the beginning of the season when their ranking was 97: currently they have a 4-2 record and are fresh off a dominant victory against Beaumont.

West Valley started the year with a 2-0 record, but have struggled since. Currently they are on a fourgame losing streak coming off a tough loss against Tahquitz where they basically beat themselves.

One of West Valley’s key playmakers, Alfred Jones, went down with a possibly significant injury last week: it is unknown if he will be available for this matchup.

The West Valley Mustangs are definitely playing the underdog role this week. Many players are going to have to have the game of their lives and hope that San Jacinto struggles to find chemistry.

West Valley is a good team, but they have half as many players as San Jacinto. That imbalance has many disadvantages: players get tired more easily as they have no one to sub for them; if injuries occur, it gets harder and harder to keep key players in the game. Many West Valley players have to play on both sides of the ball. As the season goes on, the challenge

Hemet is traveling up to Beaumont. Hemet is fresh off their amazing victory over Citrus Hill. They have all the momentum and energy on their side going into this matchup against Beaumont. Beaumont seemed poised to finish at the top of the league until they ran into the San Jacinto Tigers last week: the Tigers brought them back to reality. Beaumont will be looking to rebound off of their week six lost and re-assert themselves amongst the best in the division. The last time Hemet and Beaumont played each other Hemet left the game the victors winning 25-14.

Even though this is a different team, Hemet will hope to have a similar performance.

Citrus Hill is hosting Tahquitz this week. Citrus is fresh off a loss against Hemet High, getting beaten by a field goal. Tahquitz is in a position to reap the consequences of that crushing loss. Citrus Hill doesn’t believe a team like Hemet should have ever beaten them. Hemet is a Division 11 team with a brand new QB; their offense and defense have been inconsistent for the majority of the year, showing flashes of brilliance at times, but they've struggled to get things going as of late. Citrus Hill is a Division 5 school with a huge roster and talent pool to match, which means they should have a huge advantage over schools like Division 11 Hemet.

Division 13 Tahquitz is the Dark Horse in the league. They certainly have the potential to play competitive games against the upper echelon, but they have a tendency to beat themselves by making silly mistakes.

Marijuana Cultivation Search Warrants Incident Date: 10/07/2019 Incident Location: Unincorporated Hemet County area known as Anza On October 7, 2019, personnel from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Hemet Station, Riverside County Sheriff Marijuana Eradication Team, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board served nine marijuana cultivation search warrants in the unincorporated county area known as Anza. During the service, 4,131 plants and 1,029 pounds of processed marijuana were collected for a total of approximately 10 tons, $900 in US Currency was seized as evidence and two firearms were located, (all weights are approximate, the currency is estimated as it was placed in a sealed bag for counting at a later time).

Two suspects, identified as 68-year-old John C. Crieg and 61-year-old George Hanin , both Anza residents, were located at separate grow sites. Charges will be filed with the District Attorney's Office for Marijuana Cultivation.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department's goal is to keep all of our citizens safe while also improving the quality of life for those residing within the community. Marijuana cultivation negatively impacts the environment in several ways, including diminishing and poisoning the water table and pesticides adversely impacting the health of neighboring residents. ARRESTED FOR ARMED ROBBERIES INCIDENT DATE: October 8, 2019

On Tuesday, October 9, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force with the assistance of Riverside County Sheriff’s Department SWAT served a search warrant at a residence in the 51000 block of Calle Avila in the City of Coachella.

The search warrant stemmed from an investigation into a series of armed robberies that occurred in the City of Coachella between August and October of 2019. Gang Task Force Officers identified documented gang member, Brian Jamand , 23 of Coachella as being a suspect in the robberies. Jamand was apprehended during the service of the search warrant. Gang Task Force Officers seized a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun and heroin from the residence. Additionally,

a seventeen-year-old juvenile was arrested at the residence.

Brian Jamand was charged with multiple counts of Armed Robbery and booked at the Indio Jail. The seventeen-year-old juvenile was charged with Possession of Narcotics with a Loaded Firearm and booked at Juvenile Hall in Indio.

ARMED ROBBERY

INCIDENT DATE: October 7, 2019

On Monday, October 07, 2019, at 3:28 AM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department-Norco Station responded to an initial call of an armed robbery at the 2600 block of Hamner Avenue.

The perpetrator brandished a handgun at the store clerk and demanded the cash register money. He fled the scene on foot with the evenings' sales.

Norco Sheriff's Deputies, along with the Norco Special Enforcement Team, continued the investigation and developed information on the perpetrator. A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a black

Nissan Maxima with expired registration tabs in the City of Corona. The driver, along with three other occupants, were detained for investigation.

The driver of the vehicle, a 38 years old, white male adult, and resident of the City of Corona, identified as Dwayne Wardell Haw Jr., was identified as the perpetrator of the robbery. Evidence of the crime was located inside the black Nissan Maxima. The three passengers of the vehicle were released at the scene pending further investigation. DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE INCIDENT DATE: October 6, 2019

On Sunday, October 6, 2019, at 3:01 AM, Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff Department, located a single-vehicle traffic collision at the 31700 block of Bob Hope Drive, Rancho Mirage. It was determined the driver, Hector Hermosillo, 33 years of Cathedral City, was traveling southbound Bob Hope Drive when he veered off the road and collided into a raised center median.

Hermosillo did not sustain any injuries as a result of the colli-

sion. During the investigation, it was determined that Hermosillo showed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Hermosillo was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Hermosillo was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Once treated, he was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio.

ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPT HOMICIDE INCIDENT DATE: October 4, 2019

On Friday, October 4, 2019, at 3:30 PM, the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force conducted a follow-up investigation reference an Attempt Homicide that occurred on September 27, 2019, near the 88000 block of Airport Boulevard in Thermal. During the incident, the suspect shot at multiple victims with a handgun as they sat inside their vehicle.

None of the victims were struck by the gunfire. Task Force Officers identified documented criminal street gang member, Juan "Chucky" Linares, 19 of

Thermal as the shooter.

On 100419, Task Force Officers arrested Linares near the 83000 block of Pinot Noir.

Linares was charged with two counts of Attempt Homicide and booked at the Indio Jail.

During the past year, Lake Elsinore Sheriff Station deputies investigated several complaints of theft stemming from an individual offering to sell a vehicle. The suspect would meet the victims at a location and take their cash offer, through force or fear, without turning over the vehicle.

The Lake Elsinore Station Detective Bureau identified additional victims during the investigation from the cities of Moreno Valley, Perris, Riv-

erside, and San Diego, along with the suspect, Jarbi Recinos , a 23-year-old resident of Eastvale. On Thursday, October 3, 2019, investigators located Recinos in the area of Clinton Keith Road and Interstate 15 in the city of Wildomar. Recinos was arrested without incident and booked at the Cois Byrd Detention Center for robbery.

riend of the Church is a small church with plenty of heart. Located at 26448 Olive in an obscure cul-de-sac of Hemet is blessed with a pastor and congregation dedicated to the service of people in the San Jacinto Valley. The Senior Pastor, Amber Lee Perada sat down with this reporter recently and we became engaged in one of the most intriguing and ambitious interviews one could imagine. Here is her story: "My husband David, who is my associate are fairly new to this community, although he has been with the Church for a long time. I became Senior Pastor in January of this year. We met and married and lived in Perris when we decided to move to Hemet to be close to the Church here since we felt a need to be with the Church here. At first, it was just the small property where the Church building is located, but we noticed that the two acres adjacent to

The property they were interested in

"The owner was excited with our ideas and offered to work with us and let us on to the property and we are working with him to buy the whole property. We were thinking about how wonderful it would be to come up with something that would not only benefit us but, more importantly, provide a new way to serve the community.

Our primary goal is and has always been to follow Jesus and do as he did, give to the community and provide something that everyone could benefit from. We love to have people come to services, but we want to be able to serve and so we had all this land. The question became, what to do with it."

That decision was quick in coming.

Noli volleyball team best ever he Lady Braves at Noli Indian School on the Soboba Reservation are taking the girls volleyball team to new heights this year as they continue a winning streak that began on Aug. 28. As the regular Warrior League season comes to an end with an away game on Oct. 16, the players are staying motivated.

Coaches Andrea Helms and Brian Savage work tirelessly to keep the girls at the top of their game with almost daily practices and twice weekly games.

Helms has been at Noli for eight years and coaching the girls volleyball team for four.

“We have a team of strong girls who have the want to play,” Helms said. “They have a good attitude and the competition has been pretty evenly matched this season.

She said her goal for each game is the same: looking forward to getting the win.

“Our returning players are working well together with our new players,” said Savage, who has worked at Noli for 15 years and has been helping coach the volleyball team for two years.

“We have put a lot of focus on defense this season.”

He said the team has been working to improve its serving and its consistency, but they have been doing a great job. Many of the players are multi-sport athletes and Savage said that can be a double-edged sword.

“It’s an advantage because they stay athletic year-round but is can sometimes be a disadvantage if they overwork themselves and suffer from being tired,” he said.

Co-captain Shalea Luna has been playing for the team since her sophomore year but has been playing the sport since she was a young girl.

The senior said she tries to be as supportive as possible, especially to the freshmen players. She said when someone gets down, it brings the whole team down so she tries to build everyone up so they can continue to do good.

while in middle school at Noli, which she has attended since sixth grade. She also plays basketball and softball. As one of several freshmen on the team she said she thinks her ability to play back row well is her strongest contribution to the team.

“I’m a good setter, too,” said Soza, of Morongo. “I came out for the team because it’s fun!”

Sophomore Abbie Nevarez said she started with the team this year because her mother encouraged her to play a sport and now is considering playing basketball as well.

“I think my best skill is supporting the team – sometimes players forget what we learned in practice and I can remind them,” said Nevarez, of Soboba.

The philanthropic arm of the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians will host this year’s event at the new Soboba Casino Resort Event Center.

Presented by the Hemet-San Jacinto Exchange Club and Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation, the extremely successful and much anticipated evening of food and beverage tasting will take place on Nov. 2 from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

“Autumn Elegance is recognized as one of the premier events of the year,” said Dean Wetter, Executive Director of the Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation.

Traditionally capped at 600 guests due to venue size, this year’s larger location will allow for more vendors and mingle room for more visitors. About 20 eateries will be on hand for tasting of their signature dishes and more and a dozen wineries will be represented, offering tastes of their finest. There will also be a beer garden.

“The Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians has supported Autumn Elegance the majority of the 27 years,” said Tom Wilson, Autumn Elegance Committee Chairman. “Friends of Valley-Wide and the Hemet-San Jacinto Exchange Club appreciate the tribe’s support of this event and other programs.”

Aside from the semi-formal, over 21 evening of fun it also benefits the local nonprofits. The Hemet-San Jacinto Exchange Club offers many youth projects and scholarships throughout the year and the Friends of Valley-Wide Foundation provides scholarships for families who cannot afford the cost of having their children play sports through the many programs that Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District offers for all ages. Funds also help with building and expansion projects of Valley-Wide facilities.

"We had surprisingly good production. We have harvested corn, cucumbers, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes and watermelon. Our first trial and error turned out okay. Our goal is to have fruit trees and animals and have already planted young fruit trees plus our initial chicken population is ten, and they are laying eggs.

We want to see the community come and bring their children and learn about gardening and animals and how to care for them. My hope is to spread the word.

I would like to learn how to can food as folks did during the Great Depression."

They are planning to offer the community a chance to come and plant and partake of the vegetables and fruits.

Eventually, they will post a sign in front of the Church for times when the garden will be open for folks to come and participate in the garden.

"Everything is free. Nothing is for us to profit from.

Giving back is the motto or our Church and our congregation, although small is growing. A recent Sunday saw 70 people, 30 of whom were children. We have a trunk or treat coming up soon."

Their recent grand opening was highly successful.

There are many churches in this Valley and they do not intend to compete with them, according to the Pastor.

"We are offering something different that contributes to the good works other churches do in the community. We also recently had our first children's day. The entire Sunday was for children and their needs and it

was a delight to see them enjoy being included as a part of our community activities.

We have some goats and pigs and the kids love them as they learn about farming and the growing of food and nurturing the animals."

They also have an in house band that Pastor Perada calls "A worship team." It consists of 3 singers, one of which is the lead who also plays guitar, a second guitarist drummer and pianist and will be adding as the opportunity arises, "Our numbers are not the heart of what we care about so much as our primary purpose of giving and serving."

acebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will appear before Congress this month as the tech giant is under pressure from lawmakers and regulators over its massive market power and record of privacy breaches.

Rep. Maxine Waters, the California Democrat who heads the House Financial Services Committee, announced Wednesday that Zuckerberg will testify at a hearing by the panel on Oct. 23. The focus will be on Facebook’s plan to create a digital currency and its role in housing. The company agreed in a legal settlement in March to overhaul its ad-targeting systems to prevent discrimination in housing, credit and employment ads.

Lawmakers from both parties and top regulators, including Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, have criticized Facebook’s plan for the new currency, expressing concern that it could be used for illicit activity such as money laundering or drug trafficking. There also is concern that the massive reserve created with money used to buy the new currency, to be called Libra, could supplant the Fed and destabilize the financial system, and that consumers could be hurt

by Libra losses.

“Mark looks forward to testifying before the House Financial Services Committee and responding to lawmakers’ questions,” Facebook said in a statement Wednesday.

In July, Waters and other com-

mittee Democrats sent a letter to Facebook requesting a halt on moving forward with the currency and with the digital wallet, called Calibra, which would be used in the new currency system. House Democrats also have threatened legislation that would block big tech companies from getting into banking.

Waters has called Libra “a new Swiss-based financial system” that potentially is too big to fail and could require a taxpayer bailout.

France’s finance minister said Wednesday that the European Union should not allow Facebook to develop the currency project on “European territory” because it threatens the monetary sovereignty of member countries. “It should not be the role of a private company to try to get a sovereign currency like a sovereign state,” Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said.

Unlike digital currencies such as bitcoin or Ethereum, Facebook’s plan calls for Libra to be backed by real currencies.

David Marcus, the Facebook executive leading the project, told lawmakers over two days of congressional hearings in July that Facebook would not launch the currency project until it had received all the necessary approvals from regulators and secured safeguards to protect the privacy of users’ data. He said Facebook will not control Libra because Facebook will be only one of about 100 companies and nonprofits in an association that will manage the currency.

ower to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses went out early Wednesday, affecting millions of people in California.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said a forecast of extreme wind and dry weather has created fire danger of an unprecedented scope, prompting it to initiate the largest preventive outage in state history to reduce the risk of wildfires sparked by faulty power lines, although critics noted Wednesday that the winds had not materialized.

Here are some questions and answers about the outage .

WHO IS AFFECTED? PG&E said it will turn off power to 800,000 customers — that means millions of people — in 34 counties in northern, central and coastal California. In Southern California, SoCal Edison warned that it might shut off power to more than

100,000 customers in eight counties as high winds are expected to hit the region Thursday.

The city of San Francisco isn’t covered by PG&E’s shutoffs. But much of the surrounding Bay Area and beyond is expected to go dark, including large swaths of Silicon Valley, the cities of Oakland and Berkeley and much of the Northern California wine country hit by wildfires that killed 44 two years ago. Hospitals have backup generators and could stay open, along with all emergency services. Cellphone companies have said most cellphones should work as long as they’re charged.

n this day and age the idea of Halloween is scary and dated. Dressing up your kids and walking around dark streets and up to people’s houses to ask for candy is such a freighting idea. You don’t know whose house you are going up to. Luckily there are events happening all around the city for you to take your kids to this Halloween to make sure they have fun but are as safe as can be.

Boo at the Bowl, Valley-Wide is putting on this event. The Event runs Oct 2527th and is a fun alternative to Trunk or Treating. Tickets for Boo at the Bowl are available at the Box office or at the gate.

Presale tickets are $5, at the Gate they are $7, each comes with 14 carnival tickets which can be used for carnival games or the trick or treat trail. The Ramona Bowl

is transformed into a Halloween Wonderland with a trick or treat trail that let’s children get their candy in a safe manner.

Carnival games, mini putt, bouncerland, a child appropriate magic show, spin art and lots of photo opportunities are all a part of the fun. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes. Plus there is a Haunted House for the older kids and adults to enjoy.

ell, the community has spoken. Last week’s Question to the Community, “How much authority should teachers have, and when do they take it too far?” has been answered and the responses were overwhelming. Many of you felt like teachers don’t have enough authority or power and that is why classrooms can be chaotic at times. A lot of our responders felt like students don’t give their teachers enough respect and that is a major part of the problem. Students refuse to listen to their teachers and if the teacher stands up for themselves or starts handing out detentions, the students will tell their parents that they didn’t do anything wrong and their teacher just has it out for them.

This doesn’t mean the teacher is bullying or mistreating a kid just because you don’t like them, however, it creates a grey area for parents, students, and teachers alike. How do you know when a kid is really being mistreated or deserves the punishment. Maybe if students respected their teachers a little more and respected their authority there wouldn’t be as many problems in the classroom, Here are what a couple of our readers said about last week’s question, “I think Teachers should be able to defend themselves against kids who pose a threat: Kid’s that push or hit them at middle or high school level.

I believe that teachers should be able to spank kids in elementary school just like parents open hand on the buttocks. I agree with the PBIS But I do think that there need to be exceptions were children are expelled and suspended.”

“How about giving an unruly child I hour of detention and the child cannot attend school until both the child and one of their parents complete that one-hour detention. Then double the time on every offense following it.”

A teacher shouldn’t be allowed to physically lay hands on a child in my opinion, however, they should have the right to hand out detentions and suspensions as they see fit. However, if parents feel like their kids are being treated unfairly they should have the right to have their kid switched into another class without the school making a big deal out of it, as long as there is reasonable cause. Ultimately the community decided that teachers should actually have more authority and power than they currently do. Rather you agree or not there is a compromise that can be made that empowers our teachers and help them be successful in their classrooms, but also protects our children and keeps their best interest in mind.

f you weren’t aware, it’s that time of year where the local, regional communities get together at the Southern California Fair. This year’s theme is “Go Hog Wild.” Local FFA competition, rides, food and special performances provide good family down to earth fun Americana style. As a kid, it was the Hemet Fair and was located on Florida and Palm Avenue. The fun I remember was carefree and a little wild to run about between hay bales, win a goldfish, and ride the Zipper. This fun still exists today in this tradition know located at Perris Fair Grounds.

The market is wild too, as we wrote about recently. There are new rules on trade and our economy. Recently, the United Nations decided on an over ten-year court case between the U.S. and the EU regarding unfair trade practices where the EU was subsidizing airplanes

from the EU, creating an unfavorable situation for American made aircraft. The U.S. won and is allowed to even the tables now and impose tariffs. This was pre-President Trump.

News this week prior to China and the United States picking up trade negotiations included the Commerce Department blacklisted twenty-eight (28) Chinese technology companies that are accused to be violating human rights and abuse in the implementation of China’s campaign of repression, mass arbitrary detention and high-technology surveillance against Muslim minority groups. China has ‘strongly urged” the U.S. to remove sanctions and stop accusing it of human rights. The market isn’t hog wild about this news and the tone it gives any negotiations.

I have said it over and over again recently that any substantial negotiation is off the table.

In the face of stealing propri-

etary U.S. company information, the revolt in Hong Kong and now further exposure of human rights, how can a deal be made on just tariffs. This is more than about dollars, which is how dollars became a pain point. What we do know form the recent economic data is that higher tariffs are not translating in higher inflation to us. These readings were down, not up.

Now listen up. This translates into your portfolio, as we have stated. Let your defensive and aggressive sides of your portfolio be even and fair right now.

We are around 50/50 and if the market continues to rally upward, we will increase to 40% growth and 60% conservative.

Start identifying companies and indices you want to add to your portfolio, how much and at what price. It appears the headwinds are increasing. I want to see the market go lower. When that happens, you can go hog wild.

Is the customer always right?

T

he customer is always right.

That was the adage they used to hammer into our brains when I started my first business. That was what they taught us in all the business classes and that’s what the marketing geniuses always preached. I’ve spent most of my business life regurgitating that very same maxim.

But lately, I have to wonder if the truth to this dictum—yes, I have access to a thesaurus and I intend to abuse it to the max—still holds true. The real purpose behind this phrase is to reassure customers that they can expect the best service at your establishment and to make your staff work hard to keep customers happy by providing such service. But in today’s social media savvy (I mean heavy) environment, is the customer always right?!

In my experience, most customers are the silent type. They come to your business expecting good service and if they don’t get it, they simply go somewhere else. They don’t file any complaints, or demand to see the manager, or insist on talking to the owner. They simply take their business to another service provider.

There are, however, a lot of customers these days who fall into the category of “not always being right,” and they all seem to have been made worse by the existence of social media. They have been granted tremendous power—albeit unfair power—over local businesses

by Yelp, Google, and other search engine based entities. Always ready at the drop of a hat to give a bad review, whether deserved or not, simply because they didn’t like the way you greeted them, or the way y o u handed them the money, or even the fact that it took a couple

able food, fill their gas tanks, charge their phones and have cash at hand. People who need powered medical equipment or refrigerated medicines were urged to contact their providers. Authorities reminded people to park their vehicles outside garages or make sure they know how to manually open their garage doors. People also were warned to drive slowly and carefully because traffic lights could be out and roads closed.

There are many types of these customers, each worst than the other and each determined to make your life, as a business, harder so that they can feel good about themselves and then share their “experience” with a really narrow and limited circle of friends.

The first type is my favorite. Customers that belong to this type are always looking for a refund. “I want my money back,” they would always shout because you missed this or you didn’t do that.

Whatever they point to, is not even that significant sometimes. They want to feel superior by nitpicking on some shortcomings, real or otherwise. Sometimes they haven’t even paid for what they claim to be missing. “Oh, you took too long.” “I had to wait close to an hour.”

When you look at their receipt, it is not even twenty minutes, which is actually below the average time it usually takes.

They just want their money back. When you explain to them that you have done over ninety-nine percent of the work, they still want their entire payment back because that one percent is all they “really” cared for.

The second type is the one that carries a perpetual chip on their shoulders.

Any service is poor to them, no matter how hard you try to please them. They cannot be pleased. They don’t want to be pleased.

That’s how they go through life.

The third type is the opposite one.

They are the ones with their prejudice entirely on display. They are the ones that believe that you don’t belong in their neighborhood/city/country because you happen to look different from them. You are considered an outsider, even though you may have lived here longer than them. If you have an accent, even if the person with the accent is just an employee and the actual owner is one just like them, they would tell you to go back to where you came from. In my case, that would be West Covina. Horrible commute, but doable, if I must.

Then there are the dishonest ones, the cream of the crop, who try to find some way not to pay you for your service.

My favorite line is, “Oh, I already paid.”

When you ask to see the receipt, “Oh, I threw it away.” When you say that you are the only one collecting payments, they say, “Oh, I paid it to the other guy.”

When you say that there is no other guy, we can check the cameras, then the foul language starts. They start cursing as if you are the one doing something wrong.

The customer is not always right.

You must keep this in mind that this world is full of shysters, scammers, and thieves. Most of them end up at my business, and my employees, God bless them, have to deal with them on a daily basis.

It was being switched off in stages. The outage could last for up to five days. PG&E said it can’t switch the power back on until its equipment is inspected for damage and repaired.

B

efore his untimely death at the age of 22, Buddy Holly was a rising star and a central figure in the evolution of Rock and Roll. In his seven year career, Holly recorded only three albums, but his impact on future artists was so significant that he was among the very first singers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and he remains near the top of Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest artists of all time.

In 1959, Holly was killed in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper. In his iconic hit “American Pie,” Don McLean memorialized the date as “The Day the Music Died.”

On Saturday, October 26th, “Not Fade Away” will bring to the Historic Hemet Theatre their high energy

Cory n Chad smash into comedy stardom RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR WRITER

C

had and Cory, better known as The Smash Brothers comedy team, are twins and without any doubt, one of the most popular and sought after comedy due in the country today.

They still live in the Inland Empire, Chad in Highland and Cory in San Jacinto. You could easily say locals make it big.

They have appeared in 48 states and Canada and every major city and venue where comedy is welcome, including Nashville, Baltimore, Houston and Los Angeles.

How, you ask, did two local kids hit it so big. Chad gives his explanation: “I was working in the purchasing department of a plumbing wholesaler where my job was basically taking care of purchasing orders and boxed plumbing supplies all day.

Cory, on the other hand, is now a 20 veteran employee for the State of California.

“We used to fool around a lot with jokes, and one day, 17 years ago, we were cutting up and making the line workers at STARBUCKS laugh. After we got out coffee, a guy came up and asked what we did for a living. Cor y, just smart mouthing said, ‘oh, we are stand up comedians.’

The guy happened to be the manager of The Improv Comedy Club in Ontario and asked if we’d like to do a show that weekend. Ever brave beyond our abilities, we both said sure.”

Neither of them knew what they were doing, having had no professional experience they wondered what they were going to do for five minutes on

stage Chad continued. “A day later, we put enough material together to do five minutes on stage. We were not a howling sensation, but the audience gave us some applause and we were suddenly going to be dedicated stand up comedians.”

That first experience sent them off in whatever directions available for open mike availability and over time, they improved, polished their material and before long clubs began to offer them places on a bill. Before long, they were headlining shows at comedy clubs around California and beyond. They were soon headlining every comedy club in the Los Angeles area: The Comedy Store, Hollywood IMPROV, Laugh

Quite often I get asked how long a particular car will last.

And I get it because a car is one of the biggest investments many people will make for years. That begs the obvious question, especially when money is tight and cost of living is ever increasing so then, you ask, “how long will this potential car I’m interested in buying will last?”

This depends on many factors; there are some tried-andtrue tactics to figure out the average lifespan of your vehicle.

Here’s what you need to know According to Consumer Reports, the average lifespan of today’s cars is about eight years or 150,000 miles. however I’ve seen vehicles last over 200,000 miles that are properly maintained.

While there’s no real way to tell how long a car will stay trouble-free, as you don’t know how the vehicle was maintained before you got it. We don’t knowingly hand off a foreseen problem at the dealership we start off with a good inspection to determine what needs to be done, we fix them, service, smog, and safety the vehicle ready for sale. Though we can’t

You’ve made an investment in that car that’s why we recommend a routine of ongoing maintenance to prevent major parts from failing.

No car can last forever; generally, cars that have exceeded 200,000 miles on the odometer are running on borrowed time and may begin requiring additional maintenance in the coming year.

ow many houses have you been outbid on? And if you’re an owner who can’t even get a nibble out of buyers - if some barely even bother stepping inside - are you starting to feel like screaming?

“Rising demand among millennials, full employment, and the strong economy have bumped against limited inventory,” the Washington Post reported, “which fuels price increases.”

What to do? Read on for some of the best insider tips. * January and February are the best months to buy. Forget the “experts” who warn you shouldn’t try to time the

market. A recent study from NerdWallet shows houses typically cost 8.45 percent less during those two months than in June and August.

True, the pickings might be slimmer, given that most sellers list a house in the peak spring or summer seasons.

More than two-thirds of those Gen Z buyers spent less than three months on their search, compared to 54 percent of Millennials and less than half of both Gen Xers (born between 1965 and 1976) and Baby Boomers.

motivated and keeps the ball rolling because this isn’t as easy as people think. Making people laugh week after week isn’t a snap. You always have to come up with new material even if some of it is on an old theme. Sometimes it is really hard to make enough money to support your family, but we’ve been tight going through divorces or whatever. We always had each other to say; we still have comedy.

Like brothers and especially twins, they have their differences. Chad admits they get on each other’s nerves on occasion, especially arguing over ideas, but it is never serious.

Cory was still a State employee but managed to work their comedy gigs into his work schedule. Chad, however, said goodbye to hardware and never looked back.

“To be honest,” says Chad, “it is hard work and working as a team with Cory. There have been times when things got tough that I would have given it all up, but Cory wouldn’t let me. He always saw a bright light around every dark corner and I’m glad he did. Being twins and having each other keeps us

I’ve noticed at our Improv Dirty Comedy Night shows they line up for hours ahead of time to grab front-row tables so they can become part of the show. They loved to be picked on and tell their friends how they are part of the show. Maybe it is because they seek recognition, but

they keep on coming and giving us back what we hand out.”

They have appeared at the Derby in Hemet, and owner Jesse Vivanco tells me they have sell-out crowds and are the biggest comedy draw he ever gets.

People who go to their type of comedy or maybe all current comedy shows know what to expect and that’s why they like it. Folks that go for the first time or haven’t been in years quickly learn that the public doesn’t expect Bob Hope and Red Skeleton of days gone by.

Of course, it is well known that women get together and often say things amongst themselves just as rough.

Chad admits that audienc-

es in different locales have different tastes. “In New England, you have to approach the audiences slowly and work up to speed whereas, in Los Angeles, they expect hardcore comedy from the beginning because that’s what they’re accustomed to.

Oh, yes, we’ve bombed. Every comedian has at one time or another. I remember our first show in Las Vegas. We were on a bill with the great Ralphie Maye. It was the early dinner show at 7 p.m. on a Friday. He warned us to go easy on them. Well, we ignored his advice and went full boar. There were no boos but we faced stone silence for 20 minutes and you tell the audience couldn’t wait for us to get off the stage. Ralphie

came out and said we’d make up for it on the late show because it would be a different crowd and we were well received.”

One thing he expressed that whether you do comedy, sing, or any other kind of public performance; if you don’t know your audience, you will not be successful and I would say for sure that The Smash Brothers generally have their audiences eating out of hands. W

hen I was discharged, the U. S. Navy paid my train fare from Portsmouth, Va to Charleston with a small severance pay in cash. I saw my mother on the platform at the C&O Depot. Still angry, I wanted nothing to do with her. My life was screwed up and I blamed her.

I walked several cars back and got off toward the rear of the train. With so many people getting off, I slipped into the waiting room and out the other side. Instead of going home, I took a cab to a downtown hotel.

For three days I holed up in my room and tried to figure out what to do. Finally, I called my friend Sonny Lofts. He met me at the Summers Street Diner. Sonny played piano and sang. We had worked some of the beer joints in town as a duo, but both wanted something more. During my running away days, New York had been one of my destinations.

I’d spent only a few days there before a one-way ticket awaited me at the Greyhound Depot, but New York had seduced me. I knew that someday I’d be back.

I was so angry with my mother I swore I would never go home ever again.

So that afternoon in my hotel room Sonny and I made our plans. He had some money. I had my severance pay, minus my hotel costs. Mom had remarried some cowboy from Montana before I left for the navy. They both were working days, so it was easy for me to slip into the house, pack my bag, spend the night at Sonny’s and hit the highway by way of thumb on our way to Parkersburg where we bought two one-way tickets to New York. We didn’t purchase tickets in Charleston because mom my would be working and, even if she wasn’t, there would have been a phone call from one of the other waitresses. I had no intention of having anything to do with my mother because she caused me to get kicked out of the Navy.

The bus took us north to Pittsburgh and across the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Philadelphia and on to New York. Sonny and I managed to get seats up front close to the driver. As the bus approached the Holland Tunnel, it was late at night and I noticed an orange light on top of a building in the distance. “What’s that little building?” I asked.

The driver laughed. “Son, that’s the Empire State Building, the tallest building in the world.”

I shrunk down into the seat and shut up.

Due to the war with so much troop movement, most transportation terminals set up information bureaus. An attendant in the Greyhound Depot directed us to the YMCA on 23rd Street where we checked in for the night.

Aware of the need to find some kind of job right away, the following morning we hit the employment office. There were more jobs than man power. Sonny found work in a midtown restaurant. I was hired as an elevator operator at the Pennsylvania Hotel. Of course these were to be temporary jobs. We were entertainers and intended to find employment as a duo. That would not be our future in New York.

I’d never heard of the Café Rouge, The Pennsylvania Hotel’s big band venue. Since I had no experience operating an elevator, I was not immediately designated as a main lobby operator. Instead my job would be the back elevators that led down to the Café Rouge, which meant that my passengers would be the night club’s patrons and employees which, included the band members.

I did not know that I would be part of music history. I got to meet many famous band leaders and

One of the great delights of my young life occurred with Glenn Miller.

He’d always ask, “What would you like to hear tonight, kid?” I was called on the carpet several times when I kept the car door open, ignoring the buzzer so I could hear the Miller Orchestra’s wonderful tunes drifting out of the Café Rouge.

When the hotel transferred me to the front elevators I missed the music. I remember one celebrity while working the main elevators. My passenger was cowboy movie star Roy Rogers who asked directions to the Lincoln Hotel where Harry James and his orchestra were playing. He was so friendly I couldn’t believe he was a movie star. People I’d met from Hollywood over the years always insinuated that they were all unapproachable. Of course, being a dumb-assed hillbilly they probably thought that Hollywood would be beyond my educational level. Mr. Rogers threw a monkey wrench into the argument. He was about as plain and respectful of others as anybody from up the holler.

There were more treats for me in the Big Apple and some disappointments also. While I worked at the Pennsylvania Hotel, I still had the urge to sing with a band in a night club. One night oft from work I took the IRT Subway down to Greenwich Village and strolled down Third Street where clubs and bars liked both side. My luck was about to change.

he MSJC Art Gallery is pleased to present “The Prototype,” a very special sculptural installation by Gustavo Godoy. He will provide a public tour of the installation from 2 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

“The Prototype” was originally installed at The Bakersfield Art Museum earlier this year, and this second installation will expand on the bright red explosion of form and content in our gallery. With this work, Godoy explores themes of how Latinx people have contributed to our constructed environment and how the world we live in is ever-changing.

Los Angeles artist Gustavo Godoy’s (b. 1974, Ontario, Calif.) work is based

on concepts of labor, construction, social systems, and traditions of formal abstraction. It functions in the challenging space between high and low culture, both modernist tradition and survivalist problem-solving. Whether made of lumber, metal or cement, and often of accumulated or found objects liberated from their initial intention, the objects are constructed through intuition and unified by paint.

“The Prototype” is a project about the physical barriers that humans put up to separate and control each other. The “Fast Forma-Object” is meant to be ominous yet enticing, playful, mysterious and engaging. It is an intuitive construction, where every bit of wood and metal is considered for its unique

relationship to the logic of the larger accumulation.

It is meant to be complex armature for ideas, asking the viewer to consider the politics of our time in relation to the production of structures that can serve to divide, protect, distinguish, and contain individuals and groups.

As the son of a Mexican immigrant, Godoy has a unique perspective on how Latinx people contribute to American life and are perceived by society In many cases of constructing the built environment and grooming the daily lifestyle, the “day-laborer” is viewed as the lowest in society, yet essential to the workings of all industries and cities. omez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, and Grandmama are back and ready for the big screen once again in the first trailer for MGM’s “The Addams Family.” The computer-animated movie, based on the famous comic strip by cartoonist Charles Addams, comes from “Sausage Party” directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan and features an all-star voice cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Allison Janney, Bette Midler, and “Eighth Grade” favorite Elsie Fisher.

“The Addams Family” follows America’s most macabre family as they figure out a way to evade a greedy television host who is hellbent on turning their lives into a reality television series. The host shows up in the midst of the family’s preparations for a huge celebration with extended relatives.

Isaac is voicing Gomez, while Theron is taking on the role of Morticia.

The upcoming animated movie will be the first time the “Addams Family” characters have been in movie theaters since 1993’s “Addams Family Values,” directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and starring Raúl Juliá and Anjelica Huston as Gomez and Morticia. The duo first played the characters in the 1991 version of “The Addams Family,” which was a big financial win for Paramount and MGM with over $130 million worldwide. The live-action movies also starred Chris-

tina Ricci as Wednesday. “Addams Family Reunion” was a third live-action movie released straight to home video in 1998.

For Isaac, “The Addams Family” marks his biggest voice role yet. Theron has experience with the animation genre having voiced monkey Sariatu in Laika Animation’s acclaimed “Kubo and the Two Strings.” Theron also served as the narrator of the 2009 animated film “Astro Boy.” Isaac’s previous voice roles include the starring role on the “Homecoming” podcast, which was later adapted into the Amazon series starring Julia Roberts.

Here’s what MGM says about their film: “An animated theatrical version of Charles Addams’ series of cartoons about a peculiar, ghoulish family The Addams family’s lives begin to unravel when they face-off against the 21st century and its treacherous, greedy, arrogant and sly reality TV host Margaux Needler (Allison Janney) while also preparing for their extended family to arrive for a major celebration.

Happily ensconced in their Addams way of life for years, Gomez and Morticia prepare for a visit from their extended family for Pugsley’s “Sabre Mazurka,” a rite of passage ceremony to prove he is ready to become an Add-

ams Family man.

Little does the family know, their neighbor down the hill—design TV phenom Margaux Needler—is constructing a prefabricated community, replete with technicolor pop and perfectionism. When the fog lifts, Margaux is disconcerted to see The Addams Family mansion—the one thing standing between her dream of selling all the houses in the neighborhood and being adored as a TV personality forever.

As Pugsley struggles to learn the complicated “Sabre Mazurka” routine, Wednesday finds herself struggling with coming-of-age. She befriends Margaux’s daughter Parker and pushes boundaries, as well as, Morticia’s buttons by joining in on “normal” pursuits like attending public school, cheerleading, and pink barrettes.”

Juicio político a Trump: Emiten más órdenes de comparecencia

emócratas de la Cámara de Representantes que dirigen la investigación preliminar de juicio político al presidente Donald Trump emitieron el lunes órdenes de comparecencia al secretario de Defensa Mark Esper y al director interino de la oficina de presupuesto de la Casa Blanca, Russell Vought.

Tres demócratas que presiden comisiones exigieron que Esper y Vought les entreguen los documentos pedidos para el 15 de octubre.

Las comisiones de Inteligencia, Supervisión y Relaciones Exteriores están investigando las medidas tomadas por Trump para presionar a Ucrania a investigar a su rival demócrata Joe Biden y su hijo como una posible interferencia a la elección del 2020. El mandatario también retuvo cientos de millones de dólares en ayuda militar a Ucrania.

Los demócratas dicen que los documentos son necesarios para evaluar el orden de los sucesos y las razones por las que la Casa Blanca decidió retener la ayuda asignada por el Congreso para Ucrania para contrarrestar la agresión rusa.

La ayuda después fue entregada.

Entre tanto, ha surgido un nuevo informante que dice _ según su abogado_ tener conocimiento de primera mano sobre eventos claves.

Ahora que el Congreso está en receso una semana más y muchos republicanos son reticentes a hablar públicamente, la noticia de que hay otro denunciante que podría corroborar la denuncia original del primer informante sacudió a Washington y posiblemente aumentó lo que está en juego para Trump. La noticia del segundo denunciante trascendió a través de un texto del abogado Mark Zaid.

Zaid, quien representa a ambos denunciantes, dijo a The

Associated Press que el nuevo informante trabaja en el área de espionaje y ha hablado con el monitor interno de la comunidad de inteligencia.

Le denunciante original, un agente de la CIA, presentó una denuncia formal ante el inspector general en agosto que desató la investigación preliminar de juicio político. El documento sugiere que Trump usó una llamada telefónica con el presidente ucraniano Volodymyr Zelenskiy en julio para investigar a Biden y su hijo, Hunter, haciendo que la Casa Blanca encubriera el asunto.

n exalcalde y extraficante de droga hondureño declaró el lunes que el narcotraficante mexicano Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán le entregó personalmente un millón de dólares al hermano del presidente de Honduras en 2013 para financiar la campaña presidencial del actual mandatario.

“El Chapo” hizo el pago para poder traficar cocaína sin interferencias desde Honduras hasta Guatemala, testificó el exnarco Amílcar Alexander Ardón, durante el cuarto día de juicio por narcotráfico a Tony Hernández, hermano del presidente Juan Orlando Hernández.

Desde el 2007 al 2013 algunas de las toneladas de cocaína que transportó “El Chapo” fueron compradas a Tony Hernández, entre otros, y éste ayudó además al mexicano a transportar los cargamentos, gracias al acceso a valiosa información que obtenía por parte de altos funcionarios hondureños, testificó Ardón en una corte de Nueva York.

El extraficante y además exalcalde de El Paraíso, en Honduras, testificó también que Guzmán llegó a usar seis camiones de la televisora Televisa para llevar la droga y que cada camión tenía capacidad para transportar 6.000 kilos de cocaína, dijo Ardón, alias “Chande” o “Doble A”.

Portavoces de Televisa dijeron a The Associated Press que desconocen “datos específicos de la declaración” pero que “no sería la primera vez que pretenden hacer pasar vehículos como de empresas mexicanas”.

“Cuando hemos sabido se han presentado las denuncias respectivas”, señaló Televisa.

El juicio en la corte federal de Manhattan, que se espera dure dos semanas, se sigue con atención desde Honduras porque ha salpicado al presidente y lo ha relacionado con

el sucio mundo de los sobornos y la droga. El mandatario ha negado repetidamente las acusaciones de los fiscales estadounidenses y los testigos del juicio en ruedas de prensa y en Twitter.

La Presidencia de Honduras dijo el lunes en su cuenta de Twitter que “cualquier acusación que @JuanOrlandoH como candidato a presidente haya recibido o aceptado dinero del Chapo de manera directa o indirecta es 100% falsa, absurda y ridícula. Es una locura como la de Alicia en el país de las Maravillas”.

Ardón, vestido en uniforme de preso de color marrón claro, testificó durante horas el lunes y dio detalles de decenas de reuniones entre traficantes, algunas de ellas con “El Chapo”, a quien dijo haber conocido en 2007 y haber visto seis veces, hasta el 2013.

En 2013, Guzmán puso sobre la mesa el millón de dólares para el actual mandatario en una reunión en El Paraíso, a quien supuestamente acudieron Ardón, Tony Hernández, Otto Salguero, Ronald Salguero, Melvin Pinto y Mario Calix, entre otros.

Los fajos de billetes, dijo Ardón, estaban en grupos de 50.000 y 100.000 dólares. “El Chapo” al parecer le dijo a un socio suyo, llamado Don Amado, que los fuera a buscar a su auto. Después fueron colocados en la mesa, siguió Ardón.

“Lo contamos”, testificó Ardón. “Estaba en bolsas de plástico”.

Según el testigo, el presidente Hernández le pidió a Ardón dinero para financiar las campañas electorales del Partido Nacional. Ardón dijo que pagó sobornos en elecciones de 2005, 2009, 2013 y 2017.

uando Rudy Giuliani presionaba a las autoridades ucranianas para que investigasen posibles irregularidades del principal rival político de Donald Trump, un grupo de individuos vinculados con el mandatario estadounidense y su abogado personal hacían gestiones de otro tipo en la antigua república soviética.

No se trataba de iniciativas

políticas. El objetivo era lucrar.

Un grupo de empresarios y donantes republicanos promocionaban sus conexiones con Giuliani y Trump en un esfuerzo por colocar una nueva directiva en la gigantesca empresa estatal ucraniana productora de gas. La idea era conseguir lucrativos contratos para aliados de Trump, según dos personas al tanto de esos planes.

n recluso que asegura haber matado a más de 90 mujeres en todo Estados Unidos es considerado ahora el asesino serial con mayor número de víctimas en la historia del país, informó el FBI. Samuel Little, quien ha estado en prisión desde 2012, dijo a los investigadores el año pasado que había matado a unas 90 personas en todo el país entre 1970 y 2005.

El FBI señaló el domingo en un comunicado que los analistas federales tienen motivos para pensar que todas sus confesiones son creíbles, y hasta el momento las autoridades han podido corroborar 50 de sus confesiones.

Little, de 79 años, cumple una sentencia de varias cadenas perpetuas en California. Asegura que estranguló a sus 93 víctimas, casi todas del sexo femenino.

Originalmente, muchos de los casos fueron determinados como sobredosis, o atribuidos a accidentes o causas no determinadas.

Algunos de los cuerpos nunca fueron recuperados.

El FBI difundió 90 dibujos de algunas de sus víctimas, retratos a color que el mismo Little dibujó en prisión. Son imágenes aterradoras, en su mayoría de mujeres negras.

La agencia también difundió videos de algunas entrevistas en prisión con Little. Describió cómo estranguló a una mujer en 1993, y cómo la arrojó por una pendiente de un camino desolado.

“Escuché otro sonido en el camino y eso significaba que iba rodando cuesta abajo”, declaró.

En otro de los videos, Little describió a una víctima de Nueva Orleans.

“Era bonita.

De piel morena clara”, dijo con una pequeña sonrisa. “Era alta para ser mujer. De formas hermosa. Y, uh, amigable”.

Fue en 1982 y se conocieron en un centro nocturno. Salieron del lugar y ella subió al auto de Little, un Lincoln, y estacionaron junto a una marisma.

“Fue a la única que maté ahogándola”, señaló.

Investigadores de todo el país siguen intentando ligar las confesiones con restos no identificados y casos sin resolver de las últimas décadas.

En agosto pasado, Little se declaró culpable de matar a cuatro mujeres en Ohio. Fue condenado en California en 2012 por tres homicidios y el año pasado se declaró culpable de otro asesinato en Texas.

Las autoridades en el condado de Knox, Tennessee, dijeron el domingo que es posible que una mujer de nombre Martha Cunningham haya sido una de las víctimas de Little.

Tampoco está claro qué papel puede haber tenido Giuliani en los esfuerzos por conseguir contratos para sus amigos.

Pero estas presiones revelan que personas allegadas a Trump y a su gobierno estaban promoviendo negocios en Ucrania que van mucho más allá de los intereses políticos personales del mandatario. También plantean interrogantes sobre si los allegados a Trump mezclaban los negocios con la política en momentos en que los republicanos

pedían que se investigase a Biden y a su hijo Hunter, quien sirvió cinco años en la junta de otra empresa energética ucraniana, Burisma.

El viernes pasado, según el portal noticioso Axios, Trump le dijo a un grupo de legisladores republicanos que fue Perry quien propuso que hiciese la llamada en la que le pidió a Zelenskiy un “favor” (que investigase a Biden).

Axios dijo que un informante había dicho que Trump indicó que Perry le había pedido que hiciese la llamada para hablar de “algo sobre una planta de

Si bien no se sabe si la declaración de Trump del viernes aludía específicamente a gestiones secretas relacionadas con la empresa gasífera, la Associated Press entrevistó a cuatro personas con conocimiento directo de los esfuerzos por influir en Naftogaz, y sus relatos reflejan el importante papel de Perry en estas gestiones. Tres de los cuatro informantes hablaron a condición de no ser identificados por temor a represalias. El cuarto es un empresario estadounidense con estre-

mado Elías Hernández.

A finales de 2009 o principios de 2010 Ardón dijo que habló por teléfono con el actual presidente Hernández y que este le pidió a Ardón que sobornara a tres diputados del departamento de Copán, del Partido Nacional, para que votaran por él y así Hernández pudiera ser presidente del Congreso.

“Yo les soborné para que votaran por Orlando Hernández”, dijo Ardón.

A cambio, el actual presidente le dijo, que tal y como habían hablado con Lobo, le ofrecían protección a él y su familia para sus actividades de narcotráfico, dijo el testigo.

La semana pasada el extraficante Víctor Hugo Díaz Morales testificó

que pagó 100.000 dólares en 2009 para financiar las campañas electorales de Lobo, y de Orlando Hernández al Congreso.

La sala del juez Kevin Castel en la corte se ha llenado cada día de hondureños curiosos por ver a Tony Hernández, además de algunos miembros de su familia.

El presidente Hernández ha logrado mantener una cercana relación de trabajo con Estados Unidos a pesar del caso criminal de su hermano en Nueva York y a pesar de que su país es una zona de tránsito en el tráfico de la cocaína, originada en Colombia y con destino final en Estados Unidos.
