t. San Jacinto College (MSJC) and city officials gathered on September 13, 2019, for the Temecula Transformation Celebration event to kick off the renovation of the new Temecula Valley Campus.

Temecula Mayor Mike Naggar praised the MSJC Board of Trustees, MSJC leadership, including Dr. Roger Schultz, college district superintendent/ president, and city leaders, like City Manager Aaron Adams and Councilman Matt Rahn, for working on an innovative solution to bring higher education to the region.

Dr. Schultz thanked the city, the MSJC trustees and recognized the contractors: CW Driver, KPFF, and 19six, which recently won an award for renovation design.

Tom Ashley, the MSJC board

member who represents Temecula and the surrounding region, said his son would be in the first class when the Temecula Valley Campus is fully renovated. He said he told his son how a transfer degree from MSJC would get him into a four-year university.

"That conversation now gets to happen with thousands of our local residents, like look what's here. You can go here now" because of the new campus, Ashley said.

The college district used voter-approved Measure AA funds on March 16, 2018, to purchase two five-story office buildings at 41888 Motorcar Parkway in Temecula. Buying an existing facility saves taxpayer dollars and expedites the District's ability to provide access to quality higher education much sooner than needed for new construction.

ture, and sought proposals for renovation to meet the Division of State Architect requirements.

The Temecula Valley Campus welcomes students in Fall 2020.

The campus will provide 22 classrooms, six science labs, and five computer classrooms.

It will also offer a Learning Resource Center, Library, Student Life, Health Center, and Veterans Center. Student Services – including enrollment, counseling, and financial aid will be included. The campus also will feature a bookstore, café, art studio, career center, transfer center, and campus safety.

Rachel Abelgas, a Murrieta resident who graduated from MSJC in May and served as a student speaker at the MSJC Commencement ceremony, made it a point to attend Friday’s event.

The deadly crash happened in a dirt area on the 13800 block of Mesa Dr. near Green St., west of Blythe in the unincorporated community of Mesa Verde.

CHP and other emergency personnel were dispatched to the crash shortly before noon, after receiving reports of four juveniles involved in a rollover accident, CHP reported on September 16.

Based on the severity of at least one of the victim’s injuries, an air ambulance was summoned to the scene and eventually life-flighted one or more of the critically injured victims to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

Charges expected for felon suspected of killing man in East Riverside

Man who killed passenger, injured another while driving drunk sentenced

A

probationer pleaded guilty today to killing one of his passengers and seriously injuring another in an alcohol-fueled wreck just west of Perris and was immediately sentenced to 14 years and four months in state prison.

Heraclio Armando Garcia, 34, admitted one count each of DUI gross vehicular manslaughter and attempted murder with a great bodily injury allegation. A second-degree murder charge was dropped under the plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

Superior Court Judge John Molloy certified the terms of the deal, which was reached as the defen-

dant's case was about to go to trial, and imposed the sentence stipulated by the prosecution and defense.

Cornelio Huerta, 24, of Compton was killed and then-23-year-old Sergio Garcia of Paramount was injured in the March 25, 2017, crash.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Garcia was driving westbound on Ellis Avenue, approaching Burton Road in excess of the speed limit, when he lost control of his 2010 Infiniti about 6 p.m. The car veered sharply left onto the shoulder of the road, where it "collided with several mailboxes and a chain-link fence,'' said CHP Officer Dan Olivas.

He said the car continued in a westerly direction

and collided with another chain-link fence, then overturned several times.

Both passengers were ejected from the Infiniti, which came to rest on its right side in a dirt field.

Paramedics pronounced Huerta dead at the scene.

Garcia was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he was treated for extensive injuries. Garcia was treated for minor injuries and jailed the next day.

According to court records, he had a prior misdemeanor conviction in Riverside County for driving on a suspended license.

Records also indicated a separate driving-related conviction in another jurisdiction, but details were not specified.

Riverside's Annual Fright Night Tours Return

Organizers of the annual "Ghost Walk Riverside" announced today that the spine-tingling tours will return on the weekend prior to Halloween.

"Tours are new each year, and no two have ever been alike,'' according to a statement released by the California Riverside Ballet, which manages the production, now in its 28th year. "This event has the esteemed reputation for attracting artists from various areas, making a truly exceptional collaboration. Writers, storytellers, actors, musicians and vocalists all take part in a display of talent and walking adventure."

This year, tour attendees will be treated to one of four downtown walkabouts that occur hourly on the nights of Oct. 25 and 26. Each of the outings will have Edgar Allen Poe themes, woven around Riverside's haunted history. Poe died 170 years ago this October. "The Blood Red Tour'' will highlight the author's stories "Tell-Tale Heart'' and "Murder at the Rue Morgue.'' The "Black Death Tour'' will recount features of Poe's "The Pit & the Pendulum'' and "The Black Cat.'' The "House of Doom Tour'' will use passages from "The Fall of the House of Usher,'' while the "Beast Tour'' will be based on "The Raven'' and "The Sphinx.''

High school students perform re-enactments and take on the roles of the goblins, apparitions, victims, malefactors and other Halloweenish figures who populate the tours, all of which begin on the Main Street pedestrian mall at the intersection of Main and University Avenue.

elony charges were expected to be filed on September 19, 2019 against a convicted felon suspected of fatally shooting a 24-year-old man on the east end of Riverside.

Tyler Allen Diaz, 28, was arrested Monday, September 16, night and booked into the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on suspicion of murder, felony evading and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.

According to Riverside police, Diaz allegedly shot Emilio Espinoza about 4 a.m. Monday, September 16 in the 900 block of La Cadena Drive, just off of

floored his vehicle, leading officers on a chase through Grand Terrace, Jurupa Valley and then back into Riverside. “As the suspect was driving eastbound on the 60 freeway, just past the 91 Freeway interchange, he collided into a vehicle which caused his car to become disabled and stop,�

No officers were injured during the chase, nor was Diaz or the motorist whose vehicle he hit.

According to court records, Diaz has a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon.

Sex Trafficking: Felon who assaulted, pimped out teenager sentenced CITY NEWS SERVICE | CONTRIBUTED

convicted felon who compelled a 15-year-old girl to work as a prostitute in Riverside and San Bernardino counties was sentenced on September 19 to 25 years in state prison.

DeJuan Darsean Lewis, 35, pleaded guilty in March to pimping, witness intimidation, assault and two counts of unlawful intercourse with a minor.

In February, his co-defendant, 31-year-old Brandon Deonte Ellison, pleaded guilty to pimping and recruiting a minor for the purpose of prostitution. He was sentenced to 14 years in state prison.

The pair were arrested in April 2016 following a Riverside County Anti- Hu-

man Trafficking Task Force investigation.

According to investigators, the defendants became acquainted with the victim, whose identity was not released, after an encounter at the Moreno Valley Mall in March 2015.

They coaxed the girl into joining them and then would not permit her to leave once she was under their control, investigators said.

The girl was taken to an apartment in Palm Desert, where the defendants snapped explicit photographs of her and where Lewis beat and sexually assaulted her, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The girl's pictures and services were broadcast via

online classified advertisements.

She was then put to work as a prostitute and transported to Colton, Indio, Palm Springs, Rancho Cucamonga and other inland locations as part of a twomonth-long sex trafficking operation, according to prosecutors.

The teen was threatened with injury or death if she attempted to get away.

However, in May 2015, she managed to escape and reveal what had happened to her, investigators said.

According to court records, Lewis had a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon resulting in great bodily injury. Ellison had no documented priors.

As she was operating the vehicle, the teenage girl attempted to make a sharp left turn, causing the Polaris to overturn onto its right side.

As the vehicle rolled onto its side the two teenage boys, who were not wearing seat belts and had been sitting on top of the right rear door panel of the vehicle, were ejected and then crushed to death by the overturning UTV, according to CHP. The 13-year-old female

driver and 9-year-old female passenger suffered minor to moderate injuries, CHP and CAL Fire later reported.

Although officials have not released the victims’ names, CHP has said all of the teens were from San Jacinto, while the 9-year-old girl is from Blythe.

Officials investigating the fatal crash have said they do not believe drug or alcohol intoxication were contributing factor in the crash, but their investigation is ongoing.

Interstate 215. The suspect and victim were involved in a confrontation, and Diaz allegedly opened fire with a handgun, police said.

According to Officer Ryan Railsback, patrol officers reached the location within a few minutes and found the victim suffering from a gunshot to the upper body. He was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he died a short time later.

Railsback said investigators developed leads that day pointing to Diaz as the alleged shooter, and when he was spotted driving in the area of MLK Boulevard and I-215 about 7 p.m., officers signaled him to stop.

AGRICULTURAL THEFT INCIDENT DATE: June 28, 2019

On September 18, 2019, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Thermal Station Southern Coachella Valley Community Services District, served a search warrant in the unincorporated area of Mecca. This operation was initiated by an agricultural theft that occurred on June 28, 2019.

The thefts totaled $1,500 in Brown Turkey Figs and $450 in plastic crates unique to the ranch they were sto-

len from. Thermal Station Agricultural Liaison deputy assumed the investigation and identified the suspect as Edgar Cazares Castillo, 24 of Mecca. Deputies then wrote a search warrant for his residence. Castillo was taken into custody at the Thermal Station. Castillo was charged with Grand theft and Agricultural Grand theft. Castillo was booked at Indio Jail.

DUI TRAFFIC COLLISION

INCIDENT DATE: September 17, 2019

On September 17, 2019, at 10:55 p.m., Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Palm Desert Station responded to a single vehicle traffic collision in the 70600 block of Highway 111, within the city of Rancho Mirage. Deputies determined a blue Honda sedan traveling eastbound on Highway 111 veered off the roadway and collided with a palm tree. The driver of the Honda, Jorge Casas,

age 34 of Palm Desert, was determined to have been operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Jorge Casas was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio for driving under the influence.

INCIDENT DATE: September 16, 2019

On Monday, September 16, 2019, at 9:12 PM, deputies from the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s station responded to the area of Scrivener Street X Graham Avenue, in the city of Lake Elsinore, reference reports of a Green BMW driving erratically.

Deputies arrived and located a Green BMW driving in the area and performed a vehicle stop. The driver of the BMW, Richard Cooley, age 39, a resident of Wildomar was on Felony probation for receiving stolen property. Deputies

searched his vehicle in accordance with his probation terms and located 11.5 grams of heroin, 5.9 grams of methamphetamine, packaging, an airsoft pistol and other items common with the sales of narcotics.

Richard Cooley was arrested and booked into Cois Byrd Detention Center on the charges of transportation for sales of methamphetamine and heroin, as well as violation of probation.

CRIME BRIEFS PALM DESERT

The defendant charged with gunning down an octogenarian couple at their home in a gated community in Palm Desert is the victims' grandson, a spokesman for the Riverside County District Attorney's Office confirmed today.

Frank Castro, 83, and Carolina Castro, 81, were found shot to death after deputies responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 2 p.m. Sept. 11 in the 43000 block of West Calle Las Brisas, just east of Warner Trail.

Their 32-year-old grandson, Frank Scott Castro III, was standing at the front of the property and taken into custody without a struggle, according to police, who have not commented on a motive for the attack.

Castro faces two murder counts, along with a special circumstance allegation of perpetrating multiple killings and sentence-enhancing gun and great bodily injury allegations. Prosecutors have yet to determine whether they will pursue the death penalty against him, according to district attorney's spokesman John Hall.

Castro, who pleaded not guilty to the charges on Friday, has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County. He is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside and is due back in court on Tuesday for a felony settlement conference.

Tough night for the San Jacinto Tigers Odds Were Stacked Against Them KYLE HEADLEE| CONTRIBUTED

T

he Eastlake Titans made the trip from Chula Vista last Friday night. They entered Tiger Stadium with a 0-3 record and felt determined to not go home with a 0-4 record.

San Jacinto's defense was playing short-handed. Three key defensive starters sat out this week for various reasons — one in the second two on the defensive line. The backups tried their best to give pressure and shut down Eastlake's running game, but it just wouldn't be enough. Eastlake continued to punish San Jacinto inside basically running it up the middle over and over again without much variation.

San Jacinto's coaches consistently told the players what was going to happen, but it didn't matter. Eastlake wanted to prove the point that they can run the football. Their Passing game was in-effective San Jacinto's secondary did a great job of shutting that down.

Junior Defensive Back/Safety Keith Hunter made a few great defensive plays, which made Eastlake

re-think passing the football, he got his hands on the ball two plays in a row and barely missed out on the chance to come out with the interceptions. Senior Safety Kameron Rocha was laying down big hits and shedding blockers all night as well. One can't help but think that this game would have been dramatically different if San Jacinto's defensive unit would have been completed.

On the Offensive side of the ball, the team struggled to get anything going; it's hard to tell if it was self-sabotage or Eastlakes energy and passion that was making hard for the Tigers. Kajiya Hollawayne (Tigers Dual-Threat QB) wasn't seeing any openings when being forced to scramble out of the pocket, and Juan Denny (Tigers Senior RB) was being met at the line of scrimmage with two or three defenders every time he touched the ball. Eventually, Coach Galliano decided to start throwing the ball, and Kajiya Hollawayne started to connect with Junior Wide Receiver Damonce Williams on a consistent basis, but Eastlake figured out

San Jacinto ended up falling to Eastlake 31-14, there is no more time left to figure things out, with only one more game until League Play starts the Tigers need to come together and discover their identity.

Player of the Game went to Eastlake's Maximus Susi who played on all phases of the game and made a huge impact. After the game, Max made himself available for an interview and said, "We knew they were a tough team, but we needed to come out here and show that we could play with a chip on our shoulder too and that's what we did." It seems like the Eastlakes

game plan was all about coming out and playing aggressive smash mouth football. It is safe to say that the strategy paid off.

It was a tough week for half of the league Hemet and West Valley would lose close games this week.

Tahquitz and Citrus Hills both won their games and Beaumont dominated their rivalry game against Banning.

he State Legislature passed a bill last week that would allow Student-Athletes to get paid in the State of California. It went unopposed in the house and is heading to Gov. Gavin Newsom's feet. Naturally, the NCAA isn't happy about the bill because it directly affects their Golden Egg that they feel no one can touch. The NCAA is all about protecting their money and keeping their billion-dollar industry for themselves. They are the world's largest mafia and are allowed to operate within their own rules with no one to police them.

If you don't agree or go against the grain, they throw you out and pick the next guy standing in line to take your place.

The first argument people will make when hearing about this is, "these athletes are paid, they are

paid with an education," although a statement like that holds some truth it also doesn't shed light on the big picture. Education is not the reason why these kids attend school, nor is it the reason the schools offer scholarships to players.

When playing a high-level sport at the college level, it is your fulltime job and your priority. You put in 40+ hours a week practicing, working out, watching a film, or in treatment. That is separate from mandatory attendance in your classes and homework requirements for those classes.

There is no time for these Student-Athletes to work part-time jobs and they shouldn't be expected to. The university and the NCAA benefit off of them. It's their skills, their work, their talent that gives the university recognition. If it weren't for the players, there would be no market. For example, former

UCLA point guard Lonzo Ball said when he first got to UCLA the stadium was empty. Students, Faculty, Alumni, and Fans were not showing up to the games. The games weren't being nationally televised. When he was in High School, the gym was always packed with spectators. UCLA started winning, and people started to; show up to the games again, buy jerseys, and talk about the team. It wasn't the university that did that; it was the players.

I don't think the university should be able to pay these athletes millions of dollars, I don't believe the NCAA or the universities should have to pay these athletes anything past their scholarship agreement, but what is wrong is taking money out of these kids pockets for your gain. The NCAA and Universities make money off the players every day, with jersey sales, TV deals, and endorsement

deals. If a student-athlete tried to do any of these on their own, they would get suspended.

How is this fair? If your average college kid needs to make some extra money, he is allowed to; mow lawns, wash cars, or work a part-time job. How many college students start companies while in school and turn them into financially successful businesses? What the NCAA is doing to these student-athletes is telling them that they can't make money for who they are. If there is an excellent player who has a social media following, brands like Nike should be allowed to pay them to endorse their products without affecting the eligibility of the athlete. The reason why universities don't like this is that it takes money out of their own pockets. If they are an Adidas school, their star QB can't wear Nike's on Saturday, or they won't get paid.

This should be illegal and considered slave labor. They are profiting off of kids names and likeness selling their jerseys, making video games out of them, selling their posters/ pictures, signing deals with brands, getting paid for commercials, and many more things while literally making it against the rules for them to do the same thing off of themselves and if they get caught making money they will be suspended or kicked out of the program. The NCAA and Universities need to stop monetizing the opportunity for these athletes to make money and keep all of it for themselves. Players should be able to make any money that they can by using who they are as a person without it affecting their eligibility status.

I'm glad that California is taking the first steps to make this legal and hope more states begin following soon.

he Cultural Resource Department at the Soboba Band of Luiseño Indians Reservation near San Jacinto opened its Fall Cultural Program Series with arrowhead-making classes during September. About 15 students attended the first of four classes on Sept. 9 at the Soboba Sports Complex.

Also known as flint knapping, the art of making flaked or chipped stone tools by carefully chipping away material from volcanic stones in a carefully controlled manner takes special tools and much practice.

Led by instructor Art Lopez of Torres Martinez, the program is designed for students to join any of the classes to learn the techniques necessary to make an arrowhead from an obsidian flake.

The introductory course is meant to teach the basics of flintknapping.

“There is no obsidian available around here,” he explained. “It was a trade item for the Luiseños and Cahuillas, found mostly near the Salton Sea, Mammoth Mountains and in Mexico. As Natives would travel, they would trade with other tribes.”

When Lopez was working for the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, he had to learn how to make artifacts of tools they would

find in the field while on the job as a culture monitor. He started working as a monitor for Soboba in 2005.

“We have other cultural classes,” said Joseph Ontiveros, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer at Soboba’s Cultural Resource Department. “We started with basket-weaving classes years ago and are also looking toward classes on edible and medicinal plants, with the focus of how to incorporate traditional foods into your normal diet.”

Ontiveros said a survey was sent out to tribal members to find out what types of classes most interested them, and flint knapping was one of the items that were checked by many participants. He said language and material culture were requested as well.

"It also depends on being able to secure a suitable consultant to provide an adequate class," he said. "Art Lopez is one of our Native monitors, who is a well-respected individual in the tribal community."

Lopez said he had always wanted to teach a class like this but didn’t have the opportunity to do so until now. He provided students with a handout that contained flint knapping terminology and drawings of different types or styles of flaking. achieve a durable and productive projectile point.

As the students sat in a circle of chairs under a shade canopy, all eyes were on Lopez as he demonstrated the best way to get started on making an arrowhead. With a large block of obsidian on a square of leather draped over his leg, he broke off smaller pieces, or flakes, by using a copper bopper and a hammer rock. This is known as percussion flaking.

“I think the key to making a good arrowhead is to get the technique,” Lopez said. “You need to hit the right angles to knock the flake off.”

Once each person had a small enough piece to start shaping, they began the pressure flaking step using an “Ishi stick” or flaker.

The Ishi stick provides additional leverage so that the body’s energy is used more efficiently, providing more precision and control for the user. Traditional Ishi sticks are usually made from antlers or bone but can be made from modern materials.

Eloyd Rodriguez is part of Soboba’s Traditional Land Resource Management Crew and grew up with Lopez, a descendant of Soboba who lived on the reservation.

“We went out on a few excursions and are at the same cultural events which are all intertwined with who we are,” Rodriguez said.

Rudy Sanchez, 13, likes to learn about weaponry and how to make spears, bows, and arrows, so he found the class very interesting.

“These are the tools that were used to defend our people, so I wanted to learn how to make them," said Canyon Lindsey, 19.

Seven-year-old Shania Guacheno joined the class because she thought it would be “cool” to make something she could give to her brother or dad.

“You really have to have the desire to keep it going and to learn more so that one day you can pass it on,” said Lopez, who typically takes about three days to make an arrowhead because he likes to take his time with it.

Dr. Stephen Marmer is a psychiatrist in Los Angeles and is affiliated with UCLA Medical Center. Years ago, I heard him on a radio talk show discussing what leads to maturity in individuals.

He said that there are three major qualities that we must develop to accomplish successfully reach maturity: mastery over the past, a high capacity for anxiety, and the willingness to take on responsibility. I want to focus on the first characteristic, mastery over the past, which seems foundational to the others. We need to go back to go forward.

Nobody comes from a perfect home, with caregivers who never made mistakes. As much as I appreciate my parents, I faced challenges in my life for which they did not adequately prepare me. I had to master the dysfunctional parts of my past to successfully mature as an adult.

Some of the rules and patterns I learned in my family of origin were distorted and handicapped my ability to face all the circumstanc-

es I encountered as I grew older.

The Beavers Systems Model of Family Functioning delineates five styles of family relating. Level 5 is the Family in Pain. It is the most dysfunctional level of family and is characterized by chaos and incoherence.

Family members have feelings of fear and a permanent sense of pending danger. It's like living in a state of anarchy or civil disorder.

Level 4 is the Borderline Family. At this level, the family has dealt with its chaos and lack of structure by installing a tyrannical leader, often the father. He strictly regulates the behavior of the family, down to what everyone will eat for breakfast. Everything is seen as black or white, and any attempt to develop one's personality is viewed as treason.

Level 3 is the Rule Bound Family, and most families fall into this mid-range category. The tyrant has been deposed in favor of an internalized system of rules, silently agreed upon by family members. They live by a code of “oughts”

and “shoulds,” which must not be violated. To the outside observer, this family appears to function relatively well, yet individuals suppress spontaneity and emotion to get along with each other.

Level 2, the Adequate Family, and Level 1, the Optimal Family, share many common characteristics. They are flexible and resilient in the face of conflict. Power is shared, and differences among members are celebrated, rather than suppressed. Level 1 families can adapt better than the previous levels to changes and challenges as they progress through the many phases of life. They maintain a high level of emotional connection and hold the belief that they can successfully work through conflicts.

in a two-semester elective course called Life Skills/ Community Outreach in semester one they would learn about things like Paying Taxes, How To Register A Vehicle, How To Make A Resume and other things that will help prepare you for life after High School.

In semester two, the class will plan and organize a community service project. This project can be big or small. Students will be graded on attendance and participation. I feel like a class like this will help prepare students for life after school and help show them the benefit of giving back to the community. The position of the classes could even be flipped if the school district felt like that was a better idea. Either way, our community and students at the local high schools could benefit from the idea of a community service class.

However, West Valley is currently number one in league with a 12-0 record.

The two teams won't meet up until October first in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Many say that West Valleys Schedule isn't as difficult as some of these other schools, so right now they are going to have to prove to the rest of the league that they are the real deal. Six seniors and three juniors anchor west Valleys team. That is nine upperclassmen on a thirteen player roster.

ome dog lovers show their puppy love with fancy dog food, a particular spot on the sofa or toys and outfits.

And then some buy their dog a house. Not a doghouse mind you, a whole HOUSE. Meet Whitney, a 31-yearold mortgage industry professional who lives in Falls Church, Va. Similar to many millennials; she is focused on her career, so for now, her 3-year-old dog, Lucy Goose, is her baby. And as with any good parent, it's important to Whitney that her baby be happy in their family home.

"When my dog is happy, I'm happy," she confides.

Whitney became a firsttime homebuyer nine years ago when she was only 22 years old. She purchased a one-bedroom condo because it was cheaper than renting in the high-priced, Washington, D.C.-area Where she was living. With her family's help, she bought a $165,000 condo using a 10 percent gift down payment ($16,500) and private mortgage insurance. Her monthly mortgage payment was $2,100 (yes, that was cheaper than the average rent!), and she lived there for more than six years.

One month before she sold her condo, Whitney adopted Lucy Goose from a shelter. Although only a puppy, it was obvious the Labrador/Great Dane mix wouldn't stay small for long. The single month Whitney and her energetic new puppy lived together in her tiny condo was challenging.

Whitney knew she needed a larger place but wasn't sure exactly how much room she required. So she rented a townhouse - without a yard - in Arlington, Va., for $3,100 while she assessed the situation. It soon became apparent that a townhouse wouldn't work either, so she started house hunting.

This time, Whitney knew exactly what she wanted: a dog-friendly house with enough room to grow her family. She searched for a house with the following must-haves: * Big, fenced-in backyard for Lucy to run and play * A doggy door so Whitney wouldn't have to worry if she worked late and Lucy needed to go outside * Nearby walking trails * Proximity to dog-friendly establishments, i.e., restaurants, dog parks, etc. * Room for another furry baby and any future unfurry babies It took Whitney one year to find a house that checked all her boxes. Her monthly mortgage payment is $3,800 - only $700 more than she was paying for the townhouse. They moved in last summer.

And what does Lucy Goose think of her new house? "She is constantly happy," gushes Whitney.

"She loves going in and out of her doggy door, and I've caught her sunbathing on the deck. I sacrifice a lot for Lucy, but she is my baby."

Speaking of babies, Whitney is now engaged, and while she and, her fiancé Eric has no immediate plans to start having children after they're married, it's nice to know they'll have room to grow their family.

Then they can all sit, stay, and be happy in their forever home.

er looks and demean belie the streaks of grey and some sixty-plus years. She shows no signs of age. Ann Record is a human dynamo. Her eyes twinkle with mischief, ambition, and ‘let’s get on with the show.’ She is a real trooper who has devoted her whole life to the service of others in one manner or the other.

How did she come this far and where is she headed?

I asked those very questions. “My parents moved to the San Jacinto Valley when I was four years old. They were both very involved with community activities. Dad was a doctor; mom was a registered nurse. She gave up her nursing career and immersed herself in the Family Health Center and Family Service activities such as Mental and the Physical Health Services Association.

She encouraged Ann and her six siblings to do the same. Helping others became a way of life for the entire family.

“All seven of us kids were expected to follow our parents into the field of service beyond self, and we did it willingly.”

They all volunteered whenever help was needed.

After graduation from high school, she married Randy Record, whose family shared a dedication to service within the community. Her husband’s father, Clayton Record, also instilled in his children the importance of community. Clayton went on to serve several terms as Riverside County Board of Supervisor. Ann’s mother

Following college, Ann took a teaching position at Hemet High School, where she taught specific elements of agriculture, such as plant culture.

“I enjoyed teaching, but I took time away after we started a family which turned out to be two beautiful daughters.”

She took several years off to get her daughters off on the right foot and then went back to teaching but instead of returning to agriculture, she switched to elementary education and during that time she went back to school to obtain a master’s degree after which she taught in the San Jacinto School system where she taught until retirement 3 years ago. However, retirement is just a word to this lady with the drive of a steam engine who finds

President Donald Trump signed his name Wednesday on a newly constructed section of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, calling it a “world-class security system” that will be virtually impenetrable.

Trump toured a section of the border wall in San Diego’s Otay Mesa area. It was a return trip for the president, who traveled there in March 2018 to see border wall prototypes that authorities later destroyed to make way for 14 miles (22.4 kilometers) of steel, concrete-filled bollards currently under construction.

Before construction began, the border in San Diego was protected by an initial layer of sheet metal that was easily blow-torched and a second, more formidable layer that could be compromised with powerful, battery-operated saws.

“It was like a sheet metal and people would just knock it over like just routinely,” Trump said, referring to the initial layer that was replaced. He stood with construction workers and top Customs and Border Protection, Army Corps of Engineers and homeland security officials.

Mark Morgan, acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, defended the project, dismissing critics who call it the “president’s vanity wall.”

“I’m here to tell you that’s false,” he said, telling reporters that Trump reached out to border experts to find out what they needed. “You listened to the agents,” he told Trump.

Trump highlighted features of the wall, which he said have been studied by three other countries. He said the wall absorbs heat — “You can fry an egg on that wall.”

The concrete goes deep into the ground to prevent tunneling. And agents can see through it to spot possible threats on the Mexican side of the border, he said.

“When the wall is built, it will be virtually impossible to come over illegally, and then we’re able to take border control and put them at points of entry,” Trump said.

He heaped praise on the Mexican government, especially for sending tens of thousands of troops to its northern and southern borders to help slow the flow of migrants headed toward the United States. He said Pres-

He said he dropped a preference for solid concrete, instead opting for concrete-filled steel bollards that allow agents to see through to Mexico to spot assailants throwing rocks or other projectiles. “It’s the Rolls-Royce version,” Trump said.

When Trump asked Army Corps Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite to explain how technology embedded in the wall alerts agents to illegal activity, he was told, “Sir, there could be some merit in not discussing it.”

Semonite offered new details on the pace of construction that underscored how quickly the administration plans to move.

It has built 66 miles (106 kilometers) so far, has 251 miles (403 kilometers) in various stages of construction at 17 sites and contracts for 163 miles (262 kilometers) planned in the next 90 days, the general said. Additional land on private property is expected to take more time.

Crews are installing 270 panels a day, each one with eight bollards.

Trump, whose construction targets have shifted, said he expects to build up to about 550 miles (885 kilometers) of wall along the 1,954-mile (3,126-kilometer)

Ruiz co-wrote the letter with Rep. Juan Vargas, D-El Centro, to the Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources requesting a hearing in the fall so that testimony can be heard from federal officials of various agencies he said have fallen short in their responsibility to help mitigate the environmental and public health challenges posed by the shrinking lake.

“Congress must hold federal agencies accountable for protecting the public’s health and recognize that managing the Sea is an emergency. A hearing will allow me to ask federal agencies tough questions and hold them accountable to their agreements,’’ Ruiz said in a statement.

He states in the letter that he would like the opportunity to ask officials from the U.S. Department of the Interior, which owns about 40% of the Salton Sea, “what obligations they have to prevent threats to public health as a result of that

Officials say that because the lake has historically been fed largely by agricultural runoff, dust picked up by the wind from newly exposed lakebed contains dangerous chemicals that have contributed to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses for residents living near the Salton Sea in both Riverside and Imperial counties.

Also of concern is the increased salinity level of the water, which has left the lake on the “brink of ecological collapse,’’ according to Ruiz.

“We view this hearing as a critical step towards establishing the robust federal-state partnership at the Salton Sea that is required in order to avoid a severe public health and environmental crisis,’’ he said.

The last Congressional hearing on the Salton Sea was conducted by the House Natural Resources Committee in 1997.

5 Tips for balancing a career and caregiving USA NEWS |CONTRIBUTED

A

n estimated 34 million Americans provide unpaid care to adults age 50 or older every year, according to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, and that number is rapidly growing.

More than half of those caregivers feel they have to make compromises at work to care for their aging parents, according to a new survey from Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network.

With the rise in our aging population, more and more adult children are assuming the role of caregiver while also maintaining a full- or part-time job. This pressure to balance work and caregiving responsibilities has left 61 percent of working caregivers feeling as if they must choose between being a good employee and being a good daughter or son. To make matters worse, only 29 percent of

these caregivers are satisfied with their employer’s family to leave policy.

As this issue grows to impact a larger percentage of the workforce, it will be essential that employees and employers work together to find solutions. Consider the following recommendations as to ways to get started: 1. Ask for help - For caregivers, it can be extremely difficult, but also tremendously beneficial, to ask their employer for help. For employers, create opportunities for employees to express their needs. Schedule brief weekly meetings to check-in and ask how they are doing. Transparency helps eliminate pressure on the employees to keep their concerns to themselves.

2. Create a flexible policy -When it comes to caring for a loved one, there are no fixed hours or planned deadlines;

indicate your employee may need a break. Connect them with available resources or encourage time away from work.

5. Make time to listen - Lending an ear is one of the most impactful things an employer can do for a working caregiver. More than half of caregivers have expressed feelings of depression and find it difficult to care for themselves. When employers open the door for a conversation, they are providing hope and reassurance to the working caregiver.

4. Provide care for the caregiver - It can be easy for a caregiver to quickly forget about his or her own needs when caring for a loved one. Encourage individuals to take time to care for their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Besides, pay attention to signs that

time to shuttle back and forth from our valley to San Diego where to her two grandchildren, back home for a spell and hen off to a young grandson in Paso Robles.

ow, I know that I am not the first person to say it, but that is the shortest fairy tale that one can write. It has that distant feel of a time long ago, maybe even of a land far away, and the warmth that comes with wishing for a happy ending.

The concept of “happily ever after” has eluded humankind ever since Eve took a bite of that wretched fruit. Some people say it was an apple, and I can never eat an apple without feeling that guilt of having done something wrong. Even though I wasn’t the one to blame, I still feel somehow responsible.

Some cultures say that it was probably wheat. Therefore, eating bread is always considered harmful, and every diet that comes along—well, almost every diet—tends to emphasize giving up bread.

But, what really is “happily ever after”? I remember a comedian once

would be watching TV and wishing that he was with someone special, doing things that bring “happy” to one’s self; now that he was old, he maybe with someone special, but find himself wishing that he was rather watching TV. As you can see, “happily ever after” is not the same as it once was. As we get older, our perspective on things changes; definitions of things change.

Fairy tales change their significance as we grow older. That may seem disappointing to some, but that is the reality of things. Disney has made a fortune from the stories of princesses and their associated princes, but can you imagine spending a lifetime with a princess. Imagine the frustration of going through each and every day. It is not just about singing and dancing; there is real life to live. And, kids, real life is never a fairy tale. There are bills to be paid, and I don’t know anyone who has the means to pay their bills when

the “ever after” comes knocking on one’s door. Maybe someone like Bill Gates, possibly, but the rest of us don’t even have a prayer to rely on.

The other day Covered California ended my health insurance.

There was no explanation, other than a note on my account that I had actually indicated to them that I didn’t need health insurance. For the life of me, I can’t see how in the world I would have said something like that. Call it a computer glitch, if you may, but my health insurance is canceled. All the appointments I had made, now can’t be kept. You can see how my “happily ever after” has suddenly hit a stumbling block.

I have a doctor friend who does not believe in pursuing “happily ever after.” You only get a few years of bliss, according to him, and then it is one long, empty, lonely stretch, where you spend time wondering where things went wrong. For most people, things went wrong with the arrival of their first child. It is

downhill after that.

The “high” of a newfound love fades away in three to four years, he says, and then you have to deal with one issue after the other, until you find yourself doing things separately from the other half of your “happily ever after.” Another friend is adamant that the passion we feel at the beginning of this journey, usually gives way to just merely cordial relationship, at best, towards the end. You might as well be brother and sister, according to him.

I believe in the theory that one should lease instead of purchase.

The passion starts with a bang and then slowly fades away. It is time to then change to a newer, slicker model. Passion then starts again with a bang, and well, the cycle repeats itself.

I know some people would disagree with me and may even dismiss my babbling as nonsense, because they happen to have their “perfect companion” on their way to a bliss-

I

n a recent TV series about a very successful law firm, located somewhere in the United States, two of the principals were discussing the possibility of starting a pro bono office to represent the poor in their community.

One of these attorneys who happened to be extremely wealthy made a statement and then asked a rhetorical question: “I don’t believe I know any poor people, I wonder If I could get along with them” or something to the effect.

Shocking as this may be, it is nevertheless a fact that too many rich people in this country have no consideration for the less fortunate among us because they simply don’t exist in their world.

The wealthy live their lives on “the other side of town.” Working, shopping, studying, playing, and so on, oblivious to the mass of people that are considered economically disadvantaged.

The wealthy are accustomed to buying everything they desire because money is no object, and this is especially true with the new rich who feel they deserve their good fortune and everything they can buy with it.

Recently, well to do parents were caught attempting to scam universities to get their less deserving kids accepted in elite schools when poor parents have to rely on their children’s God-given abilities and motiva-

tion to aspire to get a scholarship in a top-rated school. Unfortunately, many deserving kids go by the wayside because even with a scholarship they can’t make ends meet.

In one case, much in the news recently, where a mother was found guilty of bribing her way to obtain her child’s acceptance in an exclusive university, her punishment was ludicrous. Judges, however, impose sentences for crimes based on certain guidelines resulting from legislation. In these cases, if the law allows only for light sentences, it must be because legislators that are easily influenced by lobbyists for the rich are persuaded to keep penalties low.

Everywhere we go, money talks, now and before. This scheme recently uncovered is nothing new. Some well to do parents teach their children through words and deeds that money will pave the way towards achieving their goals, and these individuals, in turn, will pass on the les-

sons to their children.

The greater problem is the debilitation of society when too many of us lose respect for the institutions that are supposed to stay vertical and solid but are being corrupted by people who have lost their way in a culture that places money above everything else.

Unethical behavior is commonplace in our country, so we need to revisit basic values of truth, and honesty. Too many crossed signals, whether from government or private individuals, are confusing our youth to the point of not knowing right from wrong.

rowing up in the San Jacinto Valley, I remember the street of banks that had a claim to fame. The 74 and 79 brought visitors and economy through and into our restaurants, stores and to buy homes.

Our business community was unified in promoting the Ramona Pageant and Hot Springs to make the draw for tourists more attractive with the end result of those outsiders leaving more of their money here. Sierra Dawn was built by the McIntyre’s, the first mobile home retirement community in the nation. Times were good, and our community was tight and focused.

Change happens, and boy did it ever in the Valley. All around the Valley new highways were built. The 10, 215, and 15 were constructed routing traffic around our Valley. Think of Route 66 and how well those towns were until new freeways were built that routed the economy of traffic elsewhere.

be this is overdramatized or exaggerated, but it’s not hard to see the timeline parallels of our communities’ decline and change of economics.

This Valley is remarkably beautiful and rich with agriculture, motorsports, future artists and on most issues a unified one. Over the decades two new highways have been designed and approved for our Valley to allow once more outsiders to skirt through our Valley on modern freeways once built. One project goes east-to-west, called the Mid-County Parkway and the other runs north-to-south and is an actual realignment of the old 79.

Bad news is that these projects are literally decades old. For over 30 years the 79 had been worked on. Both of these are approved to build now, but there is no money in the coffers. Currently, both of these projects have been listed over and over again on the County’s special half-cent transportation tax. You will hear several reasons on why they were delayed and not built. You will also see that every other pocket in the County has some new parkway, highway, expansion to three (3) lanes, overpasses, HOV or toll lanes. If you ask the Com-

mission on when our highways will be built, don’t be surprised to hear 2040 or beyond.

New highways in many areas have driven some of the fastest growth in creating new cities. Right now, we need to come together once more as a Valley and demand the 79 and mid-County Parkway be built with the proposed transportation measure.

Listing words on a sheet isn’t enough.

Why not construct where every fifth of a cent goes to our projects. This measure most likely is the only one we will see for a very long time. Our economy will blossom with a new retail and economy.

Once upon a time, they “occasionally” lived happily. Now that sounds like a better tale. :-)

wenty-one racers sped down Menifee Road in Menifee on Saturday, Sept. 14 as part of Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District’s annual Soap Box Derby.

Racers in four divisions competed in homemade and pre-built cars. It is the seventh time Valley-Wide has organized the event in partnership with the City of Menifee.

“This is a great event for both racers and spectators, and it is one of our favorites,” said Dean Wetter, General Manager of Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District. “It’s all smiling faces as they come down the hill.”

n Friday, October 4th, Neil Morrow will return to the Historic Hemet Theatre.

This time, Neil will be paying tribute to “The Big O,” Roy Orbison. Back in the 1950s, Orbison became known for his passionate singing style and dark, emotional ballads. He remains among the top 100 recording artists of all time.

Top Orbison hits include: “Only the Lonely,” “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Crying,” “You Got It,” “Ooby Dooby,” “Candy Man,” and “Blue Bayou.”

HHT Regulars will remember Neil Morrow from his performance as Johnny Cash in the “Cash, Killer and the King” show that appeared here in 2017 and 2018. Morrow’s rich voice and amazing falsetto are a perfect fit for the hard to replicate vocals of the man nicknamed the “Caruso of Rock.”

Meanwhile, tickets are completely gone for the Tribute to The Eagles on Saturday, September 28th.

According to a new national survey of auto service professionals, this common kitchen utensil is a potential hazard - albeit one of the more unusual ones - likely to damage your tires if you’re not careful about your surroundings. The four tires on your car are the only thing connecting your vehicle to the road, and they also affect everything from handling to braking, playing a critical role in your safety. Given their part in keeping you safe on the road, it’s worth taking the time to take care of your tires - especially when there are so many potential hazards to look out for.

Some of which, like a spoon, may surprise you.

But more on that in a minute.

The study from Cooper Tires conducted by Auto Service Professional magazine couldn’t come at a better time: Nearly 100 million Americans are expected to have taken a family vacation by year’s

end, according to a recent AAA Travel survey, with upcoming spring and summer road trips topping many of their plans.

With so many Americans on the road all year long, whether for a family vacation or their daily commute to work, tire damage is an unfortunate reality many have dealt with. According to the study, some of the most common causes of tire damage are running over something, like a curb (72 percent), nails (70 percent), and potholes (39 percent). Other common causes of tire damage are more easily preventable, such as driving with bald tires (48 percent) and driving on a tire with low air pressure (44 percent).

It’s probably why checking tire pressure, rotating your tires and paying attention to the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light are the top tips from auto service professionals on proper tire maintenance.

And the one location you probably most want to avoid when driving?

Chapter XVII - Better than a Biological Parent RUSTY STRAIT | SENIOR WRITER

I

was without so much as a step-father when my mother married Bob Kliment, a radio announcer at WCHS in Charleston. Bob was from Rochester, New York. He came from strong German stock and was a no-nonsense individual. He was mom’s fifth husband, and in the beginning, he and I rarely spoke. I resented rather than disliked him from the start.

It had been just mom and myself for several years since her divorce from Okie. Before her marriage to Bob, the biggest influence in my life had been my grandmother. Bob intruded into grandma’s turf. Whereas grandma concentrated on basic life facts and situations, he set out to romance me into liking him.

I was in fifth grade, and Bob thought I should be given a birthday party.

Mom had a thing about clothing styles which did not suit me at all. In sixth grade, I was still wearing knickers to school with a button-up shirt and tie.

I was allowed to invite several classmates, eight as I remember them.

On the day of my party, only one boy showed up; a kid who lived down the street from me by the name of Jackie. He was a shy kid, very polite and somewhat a loner. Instead of the dining room table, she set up a card table and covered it with a linen cloth. Jackie, my mother, and Bob sang Happy Birthday to me. She served us Vanilla ice cream with chocolate cake.

Everyone tried to make happy, but my heart was broken to know that my classmates were not my friends. They must not have been, or they would have been there. When one is that young, he has a tendency to believe the world is him and everything around him. Not me. Whatever world I lived in suddenly abandoned me. I felt so alone and deserted.

Corduroy sports ensembles, combining jacket and long pants were the rage with the guys at school. As I’ve said, my lifetime embarrassment was that my mother forced me to wear knickers which I detested. I begged for corduroy and was told that “stylish young men wore knickers.” She spent too much time, in my opinion, reading about English schoolboys and not enough about our neighborhood.

Anyway, not long after my disastrous birthday party, I came home from my paper route one afternoon, and there was a suit-sized Frankenberger’s box on the living room couch with my name on it. Why would I get anything from Frankenberger’s? That was the most expensive men and boys store in town.

Nobody in my family ever shopped there. We were strictly Sears-Roebuck and Montgomery Ward patrons.

Bob was working that afternoon at the radio station. Mom was home alone.

“Open the box,” she said. “It’s for you.

Your father got it as a gift.”

He wasn’t my father, and I always resented it when she referred to my step-fathers as my father. I didn’t raise my usual objections. “Why would he buy me something?” I asked.

“You’ll have to ask him,” she said.

“Now go ahead and open it. I’d like to see what he got you myself.”

If she didn’t know what was in the box, then we were both in for a surprise.

Mine would be a joyous surprise. Hers would be something she accepted with some reservations.

I undid the ribbon and lifted the lid.

There to the most amazing surprise in my life was a brand new brown corduroy suit with long pants. My first pair ever.

That was the day Bob became a real father to me, and I never forgot it.

My step-father was a bundle of surprises, all to my delight. For Christmas that year I didn’t make any special requests to Santa. I always got whatever mom chose and learned not to be ungrateful if it wasn’t what I wanted.

On Christmas morning I was up bright and early, almost before daybreak.

I hopped out of my bed and in my PJ’s.

Under the Christmas tree was a box wrapped in holiday wrapping with my name on it. Once again, he seemed to know me better than I knew myself.

I was somewhat a photography nut without a camera. I anxiously opened the package from Bob. My Christmas was brightened when I discovered a Kodak Brownie Camera. That was not his last surprise, superseded only by the fact that they would split up within a year and leave me destitute for a man in the house.

In the January month that followed my camera experience, I came home from school and discovered a new Excelsior bicycle. I thought some were visiting.

When I got inside, I found mom sitting on the couch, listening to a soap opera on the radio. I even remember our address, 521 Ohio Avenue. I knew Bob would be at work, but if there was a bicycle out front where was the owner.

“Who does the bike belong to?” I asked, “It’s yours, I believe.”

“Where did it come from?”

“Your father had it delivered.”

By then, I accepted Bob as my dad and was not offended. He had earned my respect and love, as much as I knew how to extend it.

“Why did he buy a bicycle? Something wrong with the car?” For whatever reason, it did not hit me that the bicycle was for me. After all, he’d thrilled me with a Brownie Camera for Christmas.

Mom was as casual and cool as a cucumber. She was never that stoic when he gave me a present. She’d go on and on about it, always trying to impress me with how much he cared. By then, he had more than won me over.

“I think it is for you.” Flat and cool. “Now let me listen to my program.”

Not waiting for anything further, I raced out the door, jumped on the bike, and raced down

the street. When I got back, I hit the brakes too hard, and the bike slipped out from under me on the icy street. I looked up, and mom was watching me from the porch. My first instinct was to blame her.

“Now, look what you made me do.”

What she made me do with bringing the bike inside and grounded me for a week.

My mother did not tolerate any kind of sass from me. Not ever.

Many years later, when I was movie star Jayne Mansfield’s press secretary, we were in Buffalo, New York where Bob had been residing since his divorce from mom. He had remarried to a wonderful woman, Loretta. They had two daughters. The youngest, Roberta, still lived at home. Her older sister was married and living in Florida with her husband and children, I looked Bob up in the phone directory. He was now an insurance broker, having left radio for a better financial opportunity. We talked on the phone, and he said he’d like to see me. I spoke with Jayne. She invited him, his wife and daughter to dinner before her evening show.

It was a great reunion for me, and I think for him. Roberta and I twisted the night away. What fun we did have.

Later as we sat before the restaurant’s open fireplace reminiscing about his time as my step-father, he said, “You know Ray, if it hadn’t been that you were so close to your grandmother, I would have taken you with me when your mother and I divorced but didn’t because of your grandmother. I wouldn’t have wanted to hurt that dear old lady’s feelings. She absolutely doted on you. So I just couldn’t do it.”

I regretted my response the minute the words came from my lips. “I wish you had.” I didn’t mean it the way it sounded. He was the only real father I had growing up, and because of his influence, I had a career in singing with big bands for many years before I ever m e t Jay n e Mansfield and later became a writer.

ou never know where and when help will come to assist someone with needs.

The San Jacinto music community is abundant with musicians willing to step forward and give or raise money for good causes, and so it comes again that our locals are stepping forward to lending a helping hand.

Andrew Morales might be mistaken for a jolly green giant or holiday Santa Clause, but he happens not to be neither of those things. He is a first-class musician, a drummer to be exact, and not just an ordinary drummer from a garage band. Far from it. He has played with some of the best-known rock bands in the country; Shy to the core, he does not talk about himself in a bragging fashion, but he has the credentials, having played with some of the top popular bands in the country, but is more interested in discussing his upcoming event at Derby’s Bar and Grill.

“It is a fundraiser for the San Jacinto School District’s Music Department. A few months ago we did a career day for one of the junior high schools, three pieces, playing in a gymnasium area and several students came up and asked technical questions about the mechanics of drumming.

My guys and I enjoyed it so much we began talking about a way we could do something for them. So, having been a high school drum captain in my marching band, I remembered how I was always in need of sticks and heads and many times found myself with inferior equipment due to lack of funds. Consequently, I turned to duck tape for patching my equipment.

“I always had an interest in helping and encouraging you musicians. Even a few sticks and drum heads for the drummers, some reeds for the saxophones or other small needs were always appreciated. All of us wished there would be someone there to give us a hand with our instruments. That would have enabled us to go out and verse the other high

schools that sported more elaborate equipment.

“I know that kids in public education often get the short end of the stick when competing with charter schools and schools in high salaried neighborhoods. I decided the best way to contribute would be getting together with other musicians that were back-up guys who sat in as sidemen with wellknown bands and put on a show to raise money for the school district. Musicians have toured with various artists. Folks don’t always know, but musicians have the biggest hearts around when it comes to helping young kids who want to be like them.

“I’ll be putting together nine pieces for this event with drums, percussion, bass, sax a singer, keyboardist, guitar and possibly a singer- something for everybody’s taste. We even will bring in a couple of local musicians who want to give back to their home ton. We call the band Planet Groove. We will be playing all genres because our theme is so non-specific because we indulge in rhythm and blues, blues, rock, and so forth. Really good music and it doesn’t matter the genre. We’ll have lots of guest stars.”

Andrew is heavily influenced by jazz and acoustic guitar. “I attended a show where the headliner was acoustical. He’s a teacher in the Hemet Unified School District. He blew me away.

t feels like we’ve been spoiled by space. Ever since Gravity seemingly changed the game, science-fiction has had to work harder than ever to impress us. It’s almost like the genre’s already peaked. Picking up the space-gauntlet, director James Gray quixotically heralded Ad Astra as being “the most realistic depiction of space ever”. And fair dos, this film is beautiful: from the glistening cinematography to artfully celestial framing to the seamless visual effects (some shots use actual photos of the moon’s surface), it all looks real.

Throughout, we’re drip-fed morsels of information about the new inter-planetary infrastructure and each new revelation is a delicious bit of speculative world-building, ‘sci-future-fact’ rather than sci-fi.

It’s a setting that also causes our nominal hero, Roy (Pitt), some serious melancholy. Outwardly, Roy is cold and uncaring, his pulse never skipping a beat, his focus always on the mission. father, who may be behind the catastrophic electrical surges that are suddenly plaguing Earth. Truly, you don’t know abandonment issues until your dad is floating beyond Neptune.

Roy’s narration sometimes sounds like a maudlin teenage diary (“I’ve let so many people down,’’ he whines at one point), but he’s a fascinatingly flawed hero, as incapable of emotions as he is a capable astronaut. His odyssey through the inconceivable vastness of the solar system has something of Willard sailing up the river in Apocalypse Now: confronted by loneliness in an unforgiving environment, the indifference of death stalking at every corner.

For such an ambitious film, it’s remarkably meditative; set across billions of miles, it is always only interested in Roy’s interi-

or life, the camera trained in heavy close-up on his tired-looking face. (Spare a thought for poor Liv Tyler, playing Roy’s wife, who is often not even in focus, making her similar role in Armageddon look positively generous.)

But despite a dip in pace towards the end, it’s also a fantastically wellstaged adventure. There’s a (literally) head-spinning opening sequence at the ‘International Space Antenna’, an encounter with an unexpected space-primate, and a moon-buggy chase which offers a thrilling preview of what ‘Fast & Furious In Space’ might look like. It has fun, even if its leading man doesn’t.

Through all this, it manages to ponder the existential questions facing humanity, and brings it back to the humanity we need to face. That, above the realistic depictions of space, is probably its real achievement.

as muertes y enfermos en Estados Unidos por la encefalitis equina oriental, un inusual virus trasmitido por mosquitos, se han incrementado este año más de lo usual, reportaron el miércoles las autoridades de salud.

Veintiuna personas en seis estados han sido diagnosticadas con este padecimiento, y cinco han muerto. La infección sólo ha aparecido en ciertos condados dentro de un número pequeño de estados.

Cada año, Estados Unidos registra en promedio siete enfermos y tres muertes debido a esta dolencia.

Se desconoce el motivo por el cual aumentó la cifra este año, pero por algún motivo los casos parecen subir cada cierto número de años, indicó el miércoles el doctor Mark Fischer, experto en los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC, por sus siglas en inglés).

La mayoría de las infecciones ocurren durante el verano, así que las autoridades de salud no creen que la situación empeore mucho más.

Massachusetts reportó ocho casos, seguido por Michigan, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Nueva Jersey y Carolina del Norte.

Debido al aumento de casos se han emitido advertencias

l número y la tasa de abortos en Estados Unidos bajaron a su nivel más bajo desde la legalización de la interrupción del embarazo en el país en 1973, dice un nuevo reporte dado a conocer el miércoles.

El informe del Instituto Guttmacher, un grupo de investigación que defiende el derecho al aborto, dice que en el 2017 se practicaron 862.000 abortos en todo el país. Esto representa un descenso desde los 926.000 contabilizados en 2014 en su última investigación y de poco más de 1 millón registrados en el 2011.

Guttmacher es la única enti-

dad que se esfuerza por llevar a cabo un conteo de todas las interrupciones del embarazo que se practican en Estados Unidos, preguntando a centros privados.

Los datos federales excluyen a California, Maryland y Nueva Hampshire.

El nuevo reporte ilustra que los abortos están declinando en todo el país, tanto en estados republicanos que restringen el aborto como en estados demócratas que protegen ese derecho. Entre el 2011 y el 2017, las tasas de aborto aumentaron solamente en cinco estados y el Distrito de Columbia.

Uno de los motivos de la caída es que cada vez menos mujeres se

l presidente Donald Trump visitó el miércoles una nueva sección del muro entre Estados Unidos y México, que describió como “un sistema de seguridad de clase mundial” que será prácticamente impenetrable.

Trump recorrió un tramo del muro fronterizo en el área de Otay Mesa en San Diego. Es la primera visita del mandatario al lugar desde marzo de 2018, cuando acudió a ver prototipos de muro que las autoridades destruyeron posteriormente para hacerle espacio a 22 kilómetros (14 millas) de acero y bolardos rellenos de concreto actualmente en construcción.

Antes de que comenzaran los trabajos, la frontera en Otay Mesa estaba protegida por una capa inicial de láminas de metal que podían ser perforadas rápidamente con un soplete, y una segunda capa más resistente que podía ser penetrada con sierras eléctricas.

“Era como una lámina de metal y las personas simplemente podían derribarla de manera rutinaria”, comentó Trump, refiriéndose a la primera capa que fue reemplazada. Realizó el recorrido junto a altos funcionarios de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP, por sus siglas en inglés), de Seguridad Nacional y del Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército, así como trabajadores de la construcción.

Mark Morgan, comisionado interino de la CBP, defendió el proyecto y arremetió contra aquellos que lo describen como “el muro de vanidad del presidente”.

a los agentes”, le comentó al presidente.

Trump resaltó las características del muro que, aseguró, han sido estudiadas por otras tres naciones.

Comentó que absorbe el calor, y señaló que “se puede freír un huevo en ese muro”. El concreto llega a gran profundidad para evitar la construcción de túneles. Y los agentes pueden ver a través de él para identificar posibles amenazas en el lado mexicano de la frontera.

“Una vez que se construya el muro, será prácticamente imposible ingresar ilegalmente, y entonces podremos tomar control de la frontera y colocarlos (a los inmigrantes) en puertos de entrada”, dijo el mandatario.

También elogió al gobierno mexicano, en particular por enviar decenas de miles de tropas a sus fronteras del norte y del sur para ayudar a detener el flujo de migrantes que se dirigen a Estados Unidos. Dijo que el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador “ha sido excelente”.

“Todos estamos encantados”, afirmó Trump. “México nunca ha hecho nada para impedir que la gente venga en gran cantidad a nuestro país, y ahora están haciendo justo lo opuesto. Realmente han sido increíbles”.

El presidente se deleitó en detalles de la construcción, diciendo que funcionarios militares y de la Patrulla Fronteriza lo convencieron de que eligiera diseños más caros.

Isaac Gant, de la comunidad de Johnson County, presentó la demanda colectiva contra la empresa Juul, acusándola de engañar maliciosamente al público, de tratar de atraer a menores de edad y de mentir sobre el carácter adictivo de los cigarrillos.
