PRINCIPAL CHAD CRIPE DISCUSSES GOALS, PASSIONS What do you believe sets you apart from other principals?

I’m very enthusiastic, I’m outgoing and passionate about education. I’m all about helping kids be successful. I learned that there’s always someone more talented or a little smarter, but I promised myself that I’d never be out-worked.

What do you enjoy doing outside of school in terms of hobbies and pasttimes?

I love all athletics, and I’m certainly a sports-minded person. I love to play golf if I can, but that’s usually only once or twice a year because I’m almost always busy with something from school. Also, if there’s anytime I can go see a student being successful, whether it’s band or choir or [anything else]. I love to be involved in watching kids succeed.

Do you have any goals for this year?

Ultimately, when I took this job, I told the interview committee that I wanted to have the number one school in the nation. When I look at [the school], we have all the resources and everything we need to do that. I really believe in the relentless pursuit of excellence.

If you could have given your high school self a piece of advice, what would say?

I’ve been blessed to have so many mentors in my life that helped me [throughout high school], but I would say to find something you’re passionate about and then go for it. Dive in and don’t care if people say that you can’t do it. I also think it’s important to know it’s okay to fail as long as you’re trying to improve yourself.

What else should students know about who you are?

I want to have a school that the kids are very proud of and that students want to come to every day. A lot of times, I talk about servant leadership, and this school is here for students first, so I want the students to know that.

CONVERGED NEWSROOM STAFF WELCOMES NEW ROYALS Welcome, new Royals! We hope your transition to high school is going smoothly thus far.

Our school is a community of diverse and unique students and faculty members, and it is the role of the Converged Newsroom staff to inform and tell the stories of the people who make up that community. Whether that be highlighting an achievement within the Fishers area or diving into a student’s lesser known talent, our staff tries to represent as much of the student body as possible. The Sceptre yearbook and the monthly school newspaper, the Orb, are produced by the Converged Newsroom staff with this goal in mind. In addition, our staff helps create content for HSENews.com, the website where more school information and daily broadcast announcements can be found.

Several small communities make up our large, connected school community. From clubs and student organizations to close-knit classes, every student can find one, if not multiple, ways to get involved at our school (If you are interested in seeing a list of clubs offered, flip to page 10 to see the directory.).

One community at our school is the Converged Newsroom staff.

Our staff is compiled of students from diverse backgrounds who share a love of journalism, writing, photography and graphic design. To be a part of our staff, earn a high grade in Journalism or Photojournalism and show interest in the work. Our staff is open to any new members with all experiences and talents, as not all members of the staff plan to pursue journalism or a related topic professionally. In addition to the bonds created

through shared passions and assignments, the Converged Newsroom staff offers a unique high school experience. The class is primarily led by student editors who help guide the staff to come up with what ideas the Sceptre and the Orb should cover.

Project Lead The Way combines math, science and technology to prepare students for college level engineering. Freshmen can begin with Intro to Engineering and Design.

CCA, LIBRARY GUIDE What to do in the CCA:

Pick up a parking pass

Get a new photo ID

Students can ask Miss Bright in the CCA Office for a parking pass, which allows students who have a drivers license to park in either the CCA or athletic lots.

Get a snack at the CCA Cafe

The CCA Cafe offers various food and drink items, including coffee, smoothies, pizza, parfaits and more.

The Cafe is open to students until 4 pm after school.

Study in a small room

Students can ask Miss Bright in the Office to reserve a small study room for after school. These rooms include TVs that allow Apple Play for students to collaborate on projects together.

Students can ask Mrs. Foster for a new photo ID, which is required to enter the building late, if the original copy was lost or stolen.

Check out and renew books

Students have the ability to check out books for up to three weeks, and then have the option to either return or renew them.

The Library offers a variety of resources students can use including a copy machine, color printers, computers and more.

Submit papers to the Writing Center

Students can submit their essays to Canvas or dropped off in person to be edited and revised by other students. Students can also meet with writing mentors in the Writing Center.

This is where students are able to sign out of school, sign in if late, return doctor’s notes and excused absense forms.

Students are able to buy school supplies and materials needed for classes. Any classes that use a textbook will recieve and return their books at the bookstore. The bookstore also includes a lost and found area.

Any medical issues that need attending are taken care of in the clinic. The nurse’s office also provides a bed and a quiet place for students who may be ill or need a break from the day.

Students can find the principal’s office here as well as find help with getting a work permit. If you are looking to turn in bus notes, you can give them to a staff member here.

For students who are having issues regarding school preformance, the dean’s office can be found next to the clinic.

This is also is also where students cam turn in parking pass forms.

Whether students are looking to get more infromation about their future regarding a career path and college, mental health or academic advising, the guidance office has counselors ready to assist.

ENGAGING EXTRACURRICULARS BENEFITS OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES It’s the first day of high school and the hallways are crowded with unrecognizable faces. Students take random turns hoping to find their next class and hoping that they will learn how they can connect to their own crowd. One way scared students can find their crowd is through the various clubs offered by the school.

High school can be a complicated place, but one of the best ways to get involved in high school is to discover the multiple clubs offered. The school offers dozens of clubs that are centered around religion, interests, cultures and more. Not only does the school have numerous clubs, students also have the chance to create their own and join as many as they would like. In order to create a club, drop by the Guidance Office and pick up a club form.

Joining clubs in high school has proven to have multiple benefits such as improving self-esteem and introducing new social opportunities. According to bentley.edu, joining clubs will not only boost student’s social experiences but will also broaden the social skills students already have developed in their life.

Not only can joining clubs enhance social lives, but it can also help improve your academics. In a study done by the US Department of Education, it was proven that students who participate in extracurricular activities are three times more likely to have a GPA of a 3.0 or higher, which is better than those who do not participate in clubs.

Another way extracurricular activities benefits students sprouts from the No Pass No Play Act, which states that a student must maintain a certain GPA in order to join or play a sport. This act encourages many student athletes to keep their

grades up, so they can continue to play their sport.

Involvement in an athletic program also reduces the dropout rate by 40 percent according to ascd.org. In general, students who do participate in extracurricular activities are less likely to drop out and are more likely to have better grades, according to a study done by a College of DuPage.

These benefits have been shown and proven through everyday students at the school. Senior Nichole Hite has been involved in many clubs in her high school career including Speech and Debate, Student Council and National Honor Society.

“People should join clubs because it’s a great way to get involved,” Hite said. “Branching out and meeting tons of new people with similiar interests is a great way to make a huge school feel smaller.”

Another club participant, junior Ryan Everett, has been an influence on his class with his involvement in the numerous types of clubs such as Student Council, DECA and Key Club.

“Students should join clubs to meet new people and feel a part of something,” Everett said.

Clubs on the next pages are organized categorically and alphabetically. Although there are more than 70 clubs at the school, there is always room to grow and anyone could be the one to produce that change. Story by Elizabeth Moodispaugh.

ACADEMIC CLUBS American Sign Language (ASL) Club Members promote deaf awareness, practice signing skills, fundraise for the Indiana School for the Deaf and develop relationships with the deaf in the community.

Academic Team This team has many different possibilities for students to show their knowledge in a team competition format, and consists of Quiz Bowl, Spell Bowl and Super Bowl.

DECA Prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance hospitality and management. .

Destination Imagination (D.I.) DI involves problem solving, creativity and teamwork to solve six internationally published challenges.

Students form their own teams and compete in both a central challenge and an instant challenge.

Future Farmers of America (FFA) Focusing on leadership, students can compete in various contests, volunteer their time and efforts to benefit the community and hold numerous leadership roles within the chapter and throughout the state.

National Honor Society (NHS) NHS rewards students for their academic achievements and service to

the community and school. In order to be a member, a student must complete an application in March of his/her sophomore or junior year. A student must have earned a cumulative gpa of 3.5 or higher and participated in clubs, organizations or athletics. Acceptance will be based on factors of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Robotics Club Come design, build, program and test robots using the VEX Platform.

We participate in custom in-house competitions each set of nine weeks. No experience is necessary to participate.

Student Council This is an opportunity for students to be the voice of HSE, along with planning homecoming activities, volunteering and running the annual food drive.

Military History Club Members of Military History Club meet to analyze and discuss military history in the United States and around the world. Students put together presentations and engage in respectful debates.

Math Team This team is composed of students interested in socializing with others while problem solving. It sponsors mathematics competitions including Mathfax, Indiana Math League, Rose Hulman Math Day, the American Mathematics Competition and the Indiana State Math competition.

Mock Trial Team Team members must audition to participate in this competitive team. Mock trial participates in county, regional, state, and national competitions. They are students who enjoy acting, public speaking, and law.

Philosophy Club Students will study the great philosophers, world views and religions of the world based on their own belief system. The format will encourage open discusion, Socratic dialogues, questioning and healthy debate.

Rube Goldberg Create Rube Goldberg machine with multiple steps and tricks to achieve a final simple task.

Speech Team The Speech Team can help any student who wishes to learn and develop skills to be successful in a variety of dramatic events, like poetry reading or original oratory or limited preparation speaking events.

World Connections Club World Connections Club plans the annual International Night with entertainment and food from around the world. They also connect the many diverse cultures of HSE.

UNITY CLUBS Black Student Union (BSU) Our purpose is to educate and celebrate the black culture. We unify the HSE student body through expression and appreciation of African American culture.

Best Buddies A nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes An interdenominational Christian organization open to all students, not just athletes, who want to join together in fellowship.

Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Provide a place for LGBTQ folks to hang out, talk about current issues, etc.

Latino Student Union (LSU) Bring Latino students a sense of community and celebration of their culture to focus on interactions between ENL, bilingual, English speaking and exchange students.

Muslim Student Association (MSA) Devoted to creating a sense of community for Muslim students (and friends) through service and activism, educating both Muslims and people of other faiths about the religion of Islam, and facilite a better environment for students.

Japanese Club Building friendships with others looking to learn Japanese standards and communication in a language outside of English.

Young Life Join a global, non-denominational Christian outreach ministry whose mission is to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and help them grow in their faith. Students of all faith backgrounds, as well as their parents/ guardians, are welcome.

Unified Sports Club Bringing together students with exceptional needs with typical peers in a fun sports environment.

GOP Encourage diverse students to create leadership skills, engage in civil discourse and share and promote republican ideas and candidates.

HSE Democrats Club The Democrats Club is a student-led organization that is open to all students who want to discuss current events, volunteer for local campaigns, engage with guest speakers, register voters and give back to the community.

Students For Life Club In the Students for Life Club, students discuss a variety of pro-life topics and do other related activities.

RECREATIONAL CLUBS Baking Club Are you interested in baking all around, and making delicious meals? Then Baking Club is for you. In this club they come together to work on various baking needs and techniques.

Board Game Club This club is club is centered around a vast array of board games as well as card games! Come together to have a good time with your favorite games.

Book Club Have you always wanted a place to come to bond with others about your favorite books? This club shares about books and watches movies adaptations.

Bowling Club Bowling Club meets at Pinheads twice a week for practices and competitions.

Come join if you’re just beginning to bowl or even if you’re a pro.

Chess Club If you have always had a love for chess, then this club is for you. Chess Club meets to learn or improve your skill in chess, and even has competitions.

Craftting for Kids In this club you can create DIY crafts for children at Riley Hospital for Children.

Crafts/Pintrest Club This club comes together monthly to create crafts by working together and developing a better community.

Creative Writing Club Creative Writing Club brings students together to talk and share about their favorite genres of books, poetry, screenplays and more.

Disney Club If you share a love for Disney, then Disney Club is for you. This club also does philanthropic trips with Riley and Make a Wish.

Euchre Club Come together to play Euchre once a week with others to meet friends and have a good time.

Friendship Bracelet Club Friendship Bracelet Club brings students together to celebrate friendship and making bracelets.

Harry Potter Club Harry Potter Club is a group of students who share the same social interest of Harry Potter. This includes events and activities that surround the series.

Hiking Club This club focuses around the idea of living a healthy lifestyle by hiking. They will meet once a month for day-long hiking to parks and reserves.

Paintball Club This group comes as one to have fun and play paintball.

Running Royals Running Royals is a group of runners and walkers who share the enthusiasm to run. Over the course of the year, members train for the Geist 5k, 10k or even the mini-marathon.

Ski/Snowboarding Club If you love to ski or snowboard, then this club is for you. They travel to Perfect North four times during January each year. Come join if you are a new, or experienced skier.

Strings N’ Things This is a club where you can take a break from stressful lives and learn to knit and work on different projects Rock Climbing Club Climbing high, and safe, is the goal of Rock Climbing Club. You can learn basics of rock climbing and come to off-site climbs at Climb Time.

Drama Club Drama Club sponsors the fall play and spring musical. Its purpose is to expose students to theatre and its working. It also strives to help students develop a sense of responsibility, selfworth, and confidence by teaching students acting, technical and life skills.

ART CLUBS International Thespian Club Honorary for students involved in theater. HSE is a member of the International Thespian Society.

Olio Road Productions Connecting students with a passion in film and giving them the training, partnerships and outlet to create is what Olio Road is all about. Students will make their own film as well as getting a chance to act in a production.

Drama Club Drama Club sponsors the fall play and spring musical. Its purpose is to expose students to theatre and its workings. The club also strives to help students develop a sense of responsibility, self-worth and confidence by teaching students acting, technical and life skills.

SERVICE CLUBS Appreciation Club The goal is to show appreciation to students and faculty members through hand-crafted gifts. The club meets monthly, and students work on a craft project to honor either teachers, students, janitors or instructional assistants. Also, we have service projects every other month during which we donate our time or raise money to support a cause or group of individuals.

Bring Change to Mind Create awareness, educate and have a voice in regards to mental health and suicide prevention.

Code for Change Select a charity or non-profit organization and use students skills in computer science to help aid the charity.

Riley Dance Marathon (RDM) Riley Dance Marathon is a service organization dedicated to raising money for Riley Hospital for Children in memory of former HSE student Matthew Springer. We do a variety of fundraisers throughout the year culminating in a dance marathon in the spring all “For the Kids.”

Habitat for Hummanity The goal of Habitat for Humanity campus chapter at HSE is to educate students about housing needs within Hamilton County, to provide financial support for Hamilton County HFH through fundraising, to organize service opportunities allowing students to aid in the construction of homes and to advocate for better and more affordable living conditions in our community.

Interact Club This club is sponsored by the Fishers Rotary Club and part of the Rotary International Organization. We offer students the opportunity to become involved in volunteer service opportunities in our school, community and with an international focus. The goal of the club is to promote the Rotary ideal of “Service above Self”.

Key Club Key Club is the student affiliate of Kiwanis International. They are a service organization that sponsors the school blood drives, has Melanoma Awareness Week, raises funds for UNICEF’s Eliminate project and helps feed the underserved in Hamilton County, among other projects.

Make-A-Wish In Make-A-Wish Club, we will raise money through doing different fundraisers for children with life threatening diseases to have their wish granted.

Project H.O.P.E. Project H.O.P.E. strives to help others prosper every day. We help the community around us in every way possible. This club strives to make HSE a better place every day.

Royal Eco Club Royal Eco Club is an organization that promotes environmentally friendly lifestyle and seeks to educate those at HSE about current environment issues.

Crafting for Kids Crafting for Kids meets with the goal of creating DIY crafts for children at Riley Hospital for Children.

JOINING THE PRIDE The transition from one school to another can be challenging and even scary for many. Navigating new hallways and seeing unfamiliar faces can make the first day seem disorienting and confusing. For middle schoolers, high school presents a new level of academic rigor, which may seem daunting.

On the other hand, the transition to high school can also be exciting. Students have greater schedule flexibility, and they can adjust their educational experience to be a better fit for their preferences. School pride has the ability to envigorate crowds at school events and adds energy to the halls of the school.

This issue of the Orb was specifically created to make the transition to high school easier for all new students. Our staff hopes you use this issue as a source to help guide you through your first few weeks at the school.
