As a Student Media staff, we strive to inform the student body on events that are occurring in our school and community. We pride ourselves in highlighting student diversity and school spirit. Student Media operates through the HSENews website, the Orb, the Sceptre, HSETV, Southeastern Sports Network, and social media accounts. We use all of our platforms to better connect the student body of Hamilton Southeastern High School to make this school a true home of the Royals.

Senior portraits are able to be taken June 7 to Nov. 9 in the Prestige Carmel studio. Then there will be a cleanup date at the school during the week of Nov. 7. Afterwards, no pictures that are taken will be featured in this year’s yearbook. Make sure you don’t delay your opportunity for your professional senior yearbook photos!

Starting with prerequisites such as Sports Journalism, Journalism or Digital Media, students can become staffers on HSETV, Southeastern Sports Network or the Sceptre and Orb staff.

LAW

APPLIED SCIENCES

Students interested in and family sciences, and fashion skills can prerequisites like Intro to and Child Development.

For students interested in a future career in the legal field, joining the Law and Government Academy gives students and opportunity to apply for an internship during their senior year.

Students wanting to pursue a career in the arts can take a range of classes from Intro to 2D Art and Ceramics or performing arts classes such as Choir, Band, Orchestra, or Acting .

BUSINESS

ENGINEERING

For students wanting to join the corporate work force, signing up for classes such as Accounting or working in the school’s Fan Stand is a step in the right direction.

Project Lead the Way is a mixture of science, technology and math courses to ready students for college level engineering. Incoming freshmen can begin with Intro to Engineering and Design.

MEDICAL

The Science Department offers a Project Lead the Way Biomedical program for students, as well as classes like Anatomy and Genetics.

OFFICES, LIBRARY GUIDE WHERE TO GO WHEN YOU NEED HELP AT HSE

CCA OFFICE

Study rooms: Students can reserve Study Rooms in the CCA Office to use for quiet studying or to work on projects. The rooms feature televisions with Apple Play so students can share their projects when working with other people. Work permits/Parking Permits: Older students can go to the CCA Office to pick up work and parking permits if needed. However, they must turn in the complete paperwork to the main office. Something to eat: The CCA offers snacks as well as meals during students’ lunch periods. Hangout with friends: The CCA is open before and after school for students to hangout, study, or work on schoolwork. Pick up/Drop off: If a parent or guardian has taken something to the school, they will drop it off at the Main Office or CCA Office for students to retrieve during the day. Parents or guardians also may pick up and drop students off here as well, just make sure you have your student ID to get into the building.

MAIN OFFICE Work Permits: Work permits are picked up in the CCA office but must be turned in to the main office once completed. Pick Up/Drop Off: If a parent or guardian has taken something to the school, they will drop it off at the Main Office or CCA Office for students to retrieve during the day. Parents or guardians also may pick up and drop students off here as well, just make sure the student has their student ID to get into the building. Bus Notes: Students can come here to turn in any bus notes to a staff member working in the main office.

LIBRARY Writing Center: Students can drop off their papers to the Writing Center to receive feedback from writing mentors. They can also do this on canvas, rather than going to the Writing Center itself. Checking Out Books: The library offers a wide variety of books ranging from fantasy to educational books. Students can check out and return books from the library during its working hours. Printers and Copiers: There are printer, copying machines, and other student resources within the library for students and staff to utilize. All are available before or after school, during passing periods, and library hours. Technology: The technology department is located in the library and is there to help with your technological needs. To get in contact you can send in a help ticket online and they will email you back to help something simple or set up an appointment.

WHAT’S UP WALL!

This is where students are able to sign in or out of school and get a tardy slip. Students also turn in excused absence forms and doctor’s notes here.

For students looking for information on college, a career path, and any academic advising, the guidance counselors are happy to help. Students can come to the guidance office for any mental health reasons as well.

In the hallway between the main office and the bookstore you can find the “What’s up Wall!” Elizabeth Timmons is our school’s bookstore manager and has the honor of updating this wall. You can see fun facts, quotes, history trivia, and a weekly calendar of upcoming events and happenings.

ADVICE Stay on top of your work and check it off a list as you go, it saves you so much stress.

The bookstore is a resource for students to buy school supplies and any other materials needed for class. Here, students also retrieve any needed books at the end of the year or semester.

Dont be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

PJ St. James, 11 Don’t make all your classes focus on one career path because chances are you’ll change your mind by senior year. Students having any medical issues in need of assistance are taken care of at the clinic. The clinic has a quiet space and bed for anyone who needs assistance during the day just make sure you show up with a pass.

WHAT’S THE STORY? A BREAKDOWN OF HSE NEWS Student Media is a class that creates the school yearbook, monthly issues of the school newspaper (The Orb), many online stories located on HSENews.com, the daily HSETV newscast and Southeastern Sports Network to keep all our students updated on news throughout the year. Our staff as a whole works to produce timely, relevant and interesting news for every area of the school. The staff covers the lives of our students and faculty as well as local and world happenings. This class helps to develop new skills,

such as writing stories, taking photographs, conducting interviews, time-management, taking responsibility, communication and professionalism. Staffers learn to develop journalistic minds while creating lifelong relationships with classmates and advisers. We hope our efforts help educate our student body and help create a school that is full of curious and well-informed individuals. Ryan Luhmann, A past newsroom member, shares her experience on staff. “I love this class,” Luhmann said. “I joined staff second semester of my junior year

and I became very close to many of my classmates. I learned to put myself out there and grew a love for journalism. If you are thinking about joining or have any hesitation, just do it. You won’t regret it.” The Student Media staff is always looking for students that have a love for writing and journalism to join the class and we look forward to a great 202223 school year, Royals! Wondering who this lovely doll is? Gnatasha has been on staff since 2019 and was a gift to the Newsroom class from a past student. She has become our class mascot over the years.

Our yearbook is designed over the course of the year covering almost every happening in our school. From sports to clubs to dances, we take photos and write stories on the interesting lives of the students and faculty here at HSE in order to produce a memorable book that anyone can reminisce on forever.

The school newspaper, also known as the Orb, is a monthly issue containing a variety of news. Each issue has stories written by members of the newsroom team sharing world, local and school news with a mixture of student/faculty involvement and some fun add-ins.

ONLINE NEWS Students on the entirety of the newsroom staff all contribute to daily publishes of online stories. On HSENews.com you can find a variety of information such as club stories, hard news stories, local news stories, student features and info-tainment stories.

BROADCAST & SPORTS BROADCASTING

SOCIAL MEDIA

Our broadcast team works hard to produce regular live and taped school and school-sports related updates. You can find them on HSENews.com.

The social media portion of newsroom handles all things online related. A select few staffers run our TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, Issuu, etc.

PODCAST Our podcast team creates topics to talk about weekly containing interviews and other interesting subjects. You can listen in on Spotify and Apple Podcasts at Southeastern Insider and Southeastern Sports Insider.

GET ACTIVE AND INVOLVED A FEW CLUBS, EXTRACURRICULARS

It’s the start of a new school year where there may be confusion and even a few fears as so many unrecognizable faces pass by in such a big school. However, there are opportunities all year long to grow friendships, get involved in the school and even more in the community. Connections have grown through so many of the clubs revolving around common passions. New clubs can also be created to expand and connect more people. A club sponsor, such as a teacher, can help develop a new club.

Bring Change To Mind This club meets to create awareness, educate, and express a voice in regards to mental health and suicide prevention.

HSE RDM HSEDM will plan and implement various fundraising activities to earn money for Riley Hospital leading up to the Dance Marathon in March!

Rock Climbing Club In Rock Climbing Club students have the opportunity to learn the basics of rock climbing and learn to love the sport. Climbing will be off site, and the location is undetermined, but will most likely be at Climb Time.

Ski/Snowboarding Club This club travels to Perfect North ski resort four times during January every year for a reasonable price. Ski/Snowboarding is open to new and experienced skiers.

Academic Team

This team has many different possibilities for students to show their knowledge in a team competition format, and consists of Quiz Bowl, Spell Bowl, and Super Bowl. Further, Super Bowl consists of teams of major disciplines (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts).

Code For Change Code For Change is a club that selects a charity/non-profit organization and use students skills in computer science to help aide the charity.

Drama Club Drama Club sponsors the fall play and spring musical. Its purpose is to expose students to theatre and its working. It also strives to help students develop a sense of responsibility, selfworth, and confidence by teaching students acting, technical, and life skills.

National Honor Society This is an organization that rewards students for their academic achievements and service to the community and school. In order to be a member, a student must complete an application in March of his/her sophomore or junior year. A student must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or higher and participated in clubs, organizations or athletics.

UNWRITTEN

-Pathways is a homerooom period, however to sign up for release time and to be off campus, use Enriching Students. Nobody wants a detention.

-Lockers aren’t typically used

- ”public displays of affection other than walking arm and arm, holding hands, and brief hugs are not acceptable for school or school activities” In conclusion, stop making out in the hallways, you are gross. -Items prohibited: firearms, lookalikes to firearms, tobacco, alcohol, lighters, matches, nicotine, synthetic urine, knives, laser pointers, animals, explosives

-Students in the bleacher organization by grade for games, specifically football and basketball. The first row is for seniors, they waited for that spot. (graphic seen to the left).

Freshmen

-Your freshman year DOES affect your GPA, don’t think otherwise.

Sophomores

-Wear blue every Friday, it’s a simple way to show school spirit.

Juniors

-Attend as many sports events as you can, showing school spirit is not something to be embarrassed about.

Seniors

-Not allowed to carry medicine (except aspirin and tylenol if you have a form on file). Quotes from HSE Student Handbook

HALLWAY ETIQUETTE

-Learn the fight song, it’s not that difficult. -Don’t cut in the lunch line, that’s not cool and nobody want to pick a fight over it, so just don’t.

DRESS CODE

-Stop jumping to reach the top of the doorway, nobody cares if you can or not.

-The following are examples of clothing or items that are considered to be inappropriate according to the handbook:

-Stop screaming at your friends, use your inside voices when inside. This is high school, not kindergarden.

-Clothing and/or any adornment displaying messages or images not appropriate for school.

-Do not walk slowly and stop in the middle of the hallway to talk to your friends, be mindful of other people trying to get to class and move out of the way.

-Clothing that is designed to reveal bare midriffs, buttocks, torso, undergarments, or the lack of undergarments

-Stay to the right of the hallway when walking to class, it makes the flow of traffic much faster. -Friendly advice to freshman, avoid the flag hallway when possible during passing periods it’s loitering central. If unsure which route to take,just know to avoid the flag hall, its always clogged and crowded.

-Brimmed hats or masks; hooded clothing must be worn with the hood down. (Note: personal protective equipment is acceptable) -Strapless tops or spaghetti-straps -Blankets and pillows

-Finally, be aware of the surroundings, the hallways during passing periods have a lot of people at one time, just look around and be careful. No one wants to run into a wall or into someone else.

-Students are not permitted to carry signs, flags, or noneducational items

-Students who violate the dress code may face disciplinary action. Which is true, dresscoding happens often.

OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM FALL SPORTS TO EXPERIENCE

Although the high school experience can be enjoyed in many different ways, many like to enjoy and participate in the sporting events our school hosts. The available events consist of football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls soccer, girls golf, boys tennis and cheer. Whether the reason is to hang out with friends, meet new people with similar interests, cheer on a friend on the team or simply to enjoy watching the game, here is a brief guide to decide when to go. The most popular events are typically the Mudsock games. The Mudsock is a yearly competition between HSE and Fishers in each sport. Each individual sport has a trophy for the winner and a tally is kept to determine the winning school at the end of the year across all of the competitions. The rivalry gets spirits of the players and spectators high. the other games throughout the year are a more relaxed experience. Some exceptions may be a matchup against a highly seeded team or a special event like senior night. Story by Parker Farrand.

All athletes who want to participate in any workouts or tryouts must first register with Final Forms. Final Forms is a new system this year for HSE Athletes Follow the steps to the right using the QR codes directly below to sign up.
