As a newsroom, we pride ourselves on informing the student body on events and happenings within our school and community. Along with this, we strive to recognize the student diversity and accomplishments that make our school unique. We accomplish this through multiple forms of media, including the Sceptre yearbook and the monthly newspaper, the Orb. In addition, our staff releases student-made online content like podcasts and athlete features on hsenews.com.

Our publications staff is one of the many communities at HSE, among a large variety of extracurriculars. Students with a passion for photography, writing, or graphic design can take Journalism as a prerequisite for joining our staff.

For those with other passions or hobbies, flip to page 10 for more information on the clubs offered at HSE. No matter where you fit at HSE, we hope you can look to our publications to participate in an informed student body.

MEET THE PRINCIPAL PRINCIPAL JANIE ULMER DISCUSSES GOALS, PASSIONS What led you to become an administrator at HSE HS?

Prior to my new role as principal of HSE High School, I was given the opportunity to develop and lead The Academy, which provides an alternative option for students seeking a high school diploma in our district. I loved partnering with the administration and school counselors at HSE because they are student focused. When the position of principal was posted, I was excited to be a part of the HSE team and work together with these professionals to serve students.

How did you know you wanted to be a teacher/administrator?

When I was in third grade, my teacher used to tell me that I was helpful and would be a great teacher. Throughout high school, I had teachers who guided me through the college and scholarship application process, those teachers also helped me see my strengths and literally pushed me to set goals and achieve. I decided to become an educator because I wanted to give back and help students just like my teachers had done for me.

What was your first impression of HSE?

My first impression of HSE was that it is a school filled with caring educators, counselors, support staff and administrators. When Mr. Harter explained the origin of the flag hallway, I was in absolute awe. Knowing that we have a school that celebrates and welcomes diverse backgrounds is awesome! I am really looking forward to meeting our students!

What are your future plans for HSE?

In light of the educational challenges associated with COVID-19, our faculty and staff are working together to address student needs even though we aren’t together on the HSE campus. My plan is to support all members of the HSE community as we not only navigate learning in a digital environment, but also provide meaningful opportunities for students to connect to their school.

ADVICE FOR CLASSMATES FROM 2020 STUDENTS “Your closest friends and your inner circle reflect who you are now and where you’re headed, so take a good look around you. Do they share your dreams, passions and goals? If yes, capitalize on this and if not, don’t cut them off but limit yourself from negative people and try to center yourself around those who are positive and push you to become better. Friendships are connections you can use in the future to make sure you play a role so that your friends can benefit from you, as well.

And remember the greatest investment isn’t Tesla or Apple, the greatest investment you can make is in yourself.” - Luqman Elbakri, Class of 2020 “While you may not enjoy every class you are taking, there’s always something you can learn when you look around. Try to focus on the positive things you can learn from each class. In hindsight, while it may have seemed like a lot of work to read “optional” textbook pages, that’s what’s keeping me afloat in college. So, always give it your all with a positive attitude!” Charmis Patel, Class of 2020 “I would say my biggest advice is to just start figuring out how to efficiently structure your days one day at a time. For me, that was writing in a separate notebook what tasks I had to get done for each day, blocking off each individual hour, and then sticking

to that. It honestly helps so much once you start having time to yourself and between the weeks once you step on campus or trade school.”

CAREER PATHWAYS

Engineering Project Lead the Way is a mixture of science, technology and math courses to ready students for college level engineering. Incoming freshmen can begin with Intro to Engineering and Design.

Media Starting with prerequisites such as Photojournalism, Journalism or Mass Media, students can become staffers on HSETV, Southeastern Sports Network or the yearbook and newspaper staff.

Arts

Applied Sciences Students wanting to improve their consumer and family science, agriculture and fashion skills can enroll in prerequisites like Intro to Fashion, Intro to Agriculture and Child Development.

Law

Students wanting to pursue a career in the arts can take a range of classes from Intro to 2D Art and Ceramics 1 or performing arts classes such as Choir, Band, Orchestra or Acting 1.

Medical

For students interested in the legal field for a possible career, joining the Law and Government Academy gives students an opportunity to apply for an internship during their senior year.

The Science Department offers a Project Lead the Way Biomedical program for students, as well as classes like Anatomy and Genetics.

Business For students wanting to join the corporate work force, signing up for classes such as Accounting or working in the school’s Fan Stand is a step in the right direction.

CCA, MAIN OFFICE, LIBRARY GUIDE What to do in the CCA:

Study Rooms: Students can reserve Study Rooms in the CCA Office to use for quiet studying, or to work on projects. The rooms feature TV’s with Apple Play so students can share their projects when working with other people.

Work Permits / Driving Passes: Older students can go to the CCA Office to pick up work permits and parking passes, if needed. However, they must turn in the completed paperwork to the main office.

Something to Eat: The CCA offers snacks before and after school, as well as lunch during students’ lunch periods. However, the CCA is closed after 4:00 p.m.

Hangout with Friends: The CCA is opened before and after school, for students to talk with their friends.

What to do in the Library:

Writing Center: Students can drop of their papers to the Writing Center to recieve feedback from writing mentors based on errors or recommendations. They can also do this online, rather than going to the Writing Center itself.

Checking Out Books: The library offers plenty of books ranging from fantasy to educational books. Students can check out and return books from the library.

Printers, Copiers and The Podcast Room: There are printers, copying machines and other student resources within the library for students to use. All are avaiable before or after school, and during passing periods. The library also hosts a podcast studio for students to reserve during the day.

What to do in the Main Office:

Work Permits: Working permits are picked up in the CCA Office, however they must be turned in to the main office once completed.

Pick Up: If a parent or guardian has taken something to the school, they will drop it off at the main office for students to retrieve during the school day.

Bus Notes: Students can come here to turn in any bus notes to a staff member working in the main office.

This is where students are able to sign in or out of school and get a tardy slip. Students also turn in excused absence forms and doctor’s notes here.

The bookstore is a resource for students to buy school supplies and any other materials needed for class.

Here, students also retrieve any needed books for class and return them at the end of the year, or semester.

The main office is where students can get work permits and turn in bus notes.

Students can also find the administraters’ office here.

Students having school performance or disciplinary issues can go to the dean’s office (now in the CCA office) Students can also come here to turn in parking passes.

Students having any medical issues in need of assistance are taken care of at the clinic.

The clinic has a quiet space and bed for anyone who needs assistance during the school day.

For students looking for information on college, a career path, and any academic advising, the guidance counselors are happy to help.

ENGAGING EXTRACURRICULARS BENEFITS OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES It is the first in person day of high school and the hallways are crowded with unrecognizable faces. Students take random turns, hoping to find their next class and wishing that they will learn how they can connect to their own crowd. One way students can find their crowd is through the various clubs offered at the school.

High school can be a complicated place for many, but one of the proven ways to get involved in high school is to discover the multiple clubs offered. The school offers dozens of clubs that are centered around religion, interests, cultures and more. Not only does the school have numerous clubs, students also have the chance to create their own by picking up a club form from the Guidance Office.

Joining clubs in high school has proven to have multiple benefits, such as improving self-esteem and introducing new social opportunities. According to Bentley.edu, joining clubs will not only boost a student’s social experiences, but will also broaden the social skills students already have developed in their life.

These benefits have been shown and proven through everyday students at the school. Junior Gracie Fisher has been involved in many clubs in her high school career including Student Council, FFA, NHS and Key Club.

“Students should join clubs at HSE because it gives them a chance to form friendships with other kids who have the same interest,” Fisher said.

Additionally, joining a club can also help improve academics. In a study done by the US Department of Education, it was proven that students who participate in extracurricular activities are three times more likely to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, which is

better than those who do not participate in clubs.

Another way extracurricular activities benefit students sprouts from the No Pass No Play Act, which states that a student must maintain a certain GPA in order to join or play a sport. This act also encourages student athletes to maintain their grades, so they can continue to play their sport.

Involvement in an athletic program also reduces the dropout rate by 40 percent, according to ascd.org. In general, students who do participate in extracurricular activities are also less likely to drop out and are more likely to have better grades, according to a study done by College of DuPage.

“It’s easy to blend in and coast along at a big school like HSE and clubs can help you find a community and a place at school,” Fisher said. “Clubs can also help you serve your community through service projects and build life skills to help you in the future.”

Another club participant, senior Ryan Everett, has been an influence on his graduating class with his involvement in the numerous types of clubs such as Student Council, DECA and Key Club.

“Students should join clubs to meet new people and feel part of something,” Everett said.

ACADEMIC CLUBS ASL Club Sponsor: Karen Colvin Members participate in activities to promote deaf awareness, practice our signing, fundraise for the Indiana School for the Deaf and develop relationships with the deaf in our community.

Academic Team Sponsors: Sandy Riley, John Drodz This team has many different possibilities for students to show their knowledge in a team competition format, and consists of Quiz Bowl, Spell Bowl and Super Bowl.

Aspiring Medical Students Sponsors: Alan Richardson, Chris Swisher This club is meant to expose students to the world of medicine in a fun and engaging way that doesn’t just include doctors, but also lawyers and veterinarians while also promoting classes offered at HSEHS. Book Club Sponsor: Karin Foster Join others to discuss books, share and swap books, watch a movie based on a book and more.

Budgeting Bliss Sponsor: Kari Richardson Help students make their own budgets and learn how to manage monthly spending, as well as closet clean outs to donate clothing to those in need.

Creative Writing Sponsor: Haylea Quaranta All students with a common interest of all genres of writing fiction, poetry, narrative, biography, theater, screenplays, etc. who want to share their creative talents and ideas with others.

DECA Sponsors: Kristin Lidstrom, Adam Broughton, Shawn Crull, Kari Richardson A competitive club for high school business students, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, to prepare students to be career and college ready.

Math Team Sponsors: Mary Carson, Naomi Jackson This team is composed of students who are interested in socializing with others while problem solving. This club sponsors mathematics competitions including Mathfax, Indiana Math League, Rose Hulman Math Day, the American Mathematics Competition and the Indiana State Math competition.

Honor Society Sponsors: Amy Shipley, Jill McGrath This organization rewards students for their academic achievements and service to the community and school. In order to be a member, a student must complete an application in March of his/her sophomore or junior year. A student must have earned a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher and participated in clubs, organizations or athletics. The student’s application will be reviewed by a faculty committee and acceptance will be based on the factors of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Inductions will take place in the fall of every school year.

HSEHax Sponsor: Julie Alano Join for coding and problem-solving practice and competitions. When possible, the club will also compete against other schools.

Mock Trial Team Sponsor: Janet Chandler, Gaye Garrett Composed of students who enjoy acting, public speaking and law, Mock Trial team members must audition to participate in this competitive team. Mock Trial participates in county, regional, state and national competitions.

Philosophy Club Sponsor: Brian Pletcher Students will study the great philosophers, world views and religions of the world based on their own belief system. The format will encourage open discussion, Socratic dialogues, questioning, and healthy debate in order to help students understand other views and to defend and stretch their own views.

Quill and Scroll Sponsors: David Young, Jordan Klobusnik Quill and Scroll International Society for high school journalists (journalism honor society).

Robotics Club Sponsor: Josh Gish To promote the application of STEM through the use of robotics, come design, build, program and test robots using the VEX Platform. We participate in custom in-house competitions each nine weeks and out-of-house competitions.

Rube Goldberg Club Sponsor: Robin Townsend Create Rube Goldberg machines with multiple steps and tricks to achieve a final, simple task.

Speech Team Sponsor: Bob Hinshaw The Speech and Debate Team is committed to two things: helping students enjoy and succeed in the art of public speaking and persuasion, as these skills are essential in life, and to having fun while doing so! We are competitive in the HCC and can help any student who wishes to learn and develop skills to be successful in a variety of dramatic events like poetry reading, limited preparation speaking events, and various styles of debate.

Magic the Gathering Club Sponsor: Aaron Vest Encourages face-to-face interactions between students while playing fun games and creating lasting friendships.

Necronomi Sponsor: Asa Suriano Expands upon the gothic/horror literature class by watching scary movies, reading short stories, and playing horror board games.

Paintball Club Sponsor: Greg Sasser Group of students who share an enthusiasm for the sport of paintball.

Ski/Snowboarding is open to new and experienced skiers. The first informational meeting for this club usually occurs in early October.

They will also explore the possibility of gaining college scholarships through E-Sports.

Interact Club Sponsor: Gaye Garrett This is a service-oriented club sponsored by the Fishers Rotary Club and part of the Rotary International Organization.

Interact Club offers students the opportunity to become involved in volunteer service opportunities in our school, community, and with an international focus. Members are required to participate in two service opportunities per semester as well as an ‘all club’ project during the school year.

The goal of the club is to promote the Rotary ideal of “Service above Self”.

Riley Dance Marathon (RDM) Sponsors: Elizabeth Trinkle and Dana Simmons Matthew Springer Memorial Riley Dance Marathon (aka HSE – RDM) is a service organization dedicated to raising money for Riley Children’s Hospital in memory of former HSE student Matthew Springer.
