This is Trinity’s fourth semester on staff. She is very creative when working on her tasks and is always prepared to do whatever she can to help out her fellow staff members!

FRENCH TEACHER GOES THE EXTRA MILE NATHAN PRICE COMPLETES FIRST IRONMAN

When did you start running?

I didn’t start running until 2004, after I finished college. In college, I was probably the last person in the world you’d think would run a marathon or do an Ironman. Running is what started my weight loss/health journey and has been a huge part of my life ever since.

Why is running a passion of yours?

I love running. It is something that you can do without any real equipment and you can do it just about anywhere. I’m also passionate about traveling. Anytime I go to a new country, the first thing I try to do is go for a run to explore the area.

Where and when did you complete the Ironman?

I had done a few half Ironman races in the past, but this was my first full Ironman (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run). I did Ironman Indiana on October 2, 2021. I finished in 13:00:47. My goal for this year’s Ironman is to go under 13 hours. I’m certainly not the fastest guy in the world, but that’s ok. I’m not necessarily out trying to beat other people. I just want to do the best I can.

Why was completing an Ironman so important to you?

I really just wanted to test myself. After college, I was really overweight and unhealthy. I started running and eventually did a marathon, which I never thought was possible for me. I ended up losing over 100 lbs, and I wanted to see what other goals I could accomplish.

When did you set a goal of completing an Ironman?

I had wanted to do one for quite some time. I had previously signed up for Ironman Louisville in 2019, but I got injured and couldn’t do it. I really got interested in triathlon in 2008, but never thought I could do a full Ironman. I finally decided it was time to do it.

How long did you have to train for the Ironman?

For this event, I trained pretty hard for about 9 months. I did a few other triathlons along the way to prepare.

What event in the Ironman challenged you the most?

The swim is always the most challenging for me. I know how to swim and I’m not afraid of the water, but I wasn’t a swimmer growing up. It’s definitely my least efficient part. Thankfully I have a lot of students who are swimmers who were always willing to give me tips!

How is this training different than the races you have run in the past?

Ironman training is very time intensive. When I’m in heavy training, I usually have two workouts per day. My first usually starts around 4:30-5am, and the second is after school. On the weekends, I’ll do a 4-6 hour bike ride on Saturdays with a 45-60 minute run right after I finish the bike. On Sundays, I’ll do a 2-3 hour run. It’s very time consuming.

Thankfully I have a very understanding wife.

Do you have any plans of completing another Ironman?

Absolutely! I’m already signed up for two Ironman events this year.

I’m doing Ironman 70.3 Steelhead (which is a half Ironman) in Benton Harbor, Michigan on June 26, and Ironman Wisconsin (full Ironman) on September 11.

WRITING IN STYLE

HSE WRITING CENTER OFFERS HELP, GUIDANCE WITH STUDENTS’ WRITING Writing is hard. Making sure you read and understand the prompt correctly, formulating a game plan, strong thesis and supporting arguments can prove a daunting task for students. Don’t even mention the writing, reviewing and editing process that can be time consuming and confusing- the words on the page become a jumble of letters in your head. It often takes an outside perspective to help you turn in that perfect letter, poem, or essay guaranteed to earn a shining ‘A’. That’s where the HSE student writing mentors come in.

Led by English Department chair David Young and Instructional Assistant Drake Jellison, the Writing Mentors offer their services to all students of HSE from their home base in room C107 and online on the Writing Center Canvas page.

“We’re here for not just essays in classes, but creative writing papers and contests too,” Young said. “We’re not just an editing service, if you want any help with any writing, whether it’s for school, a future scholarship, or just because you like to write, come to us. Let us read through [your essay], give you feedback and tell you about some cool scholarships or contests.”

The Writing Center was started over 20 years ago and mentors over the years have edited and reviewed tens of thousands of student papers. Students who have used this resource have walked away feeling more confident in their papers and their writing abilities.

Among those who have worked with the writing mentors is freshman Niana Patwardhan.

“I decided to use writing mentors for two reasons: I was struggling to edit my essay and my English teacher recommended them to me,” Patwardhan said. “Their edits were helpful. They provided multiple tips for the essay I sent them and future essays I will write. I would 100 percent recommend writing mentors to other students.”

When students turn a paper into a writing mentor, they can be sure that it is going into capable hands.

Mentors are available every period except third and fourth and they have the expertise and earnestness required to provide the best help they can for students to become better writers.

“If you want in-depth feedback on your paper, we would love for you to meet in person with us,” student writing mentor and junior Norah Wills said.

“Our goal at the Writing Center is to equip you with the skills to edit your paper, and meeting with a mentor is a great way to do so.”

The Writing Mentors will continue to serve HSE for years to come and will always be a resource for students to become more confident as a thinker, writer and individual in and out of the classroom.

TALKING PEER TUTOR TRIPS

DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH, BRINGING STUDENTS TOGETHER, BRINGING AWARENESS For many students, the day their class gets to go on a field trip is often one of the most exciting days of the school year. On these trips, students are met with various learning opportunities but in more interactive and fun ways.

One class here at HSE, known as peer tutoring, allows students the opportunity to go on numerous out-of-school activities. Throughout the year, peers work alongside and can get to know HSE students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and assist them in achieving their goals.

In past years, the peer tutoring classes have gone on trips to places such as Flatfork Park, bowling alleys, various stores, restaurants, and much more.

Each of these trips allows both students and peers to get out and utilize the skills they learn within the classroom. Many people often underestimate the abilities of those with IDD. Each have their own unique abilities and opinions that should be honored and considered. By visiting these public places students can further develop life skills that allow them to be more independent. One Junior, Jadyn Durden has been in peer tutoring through multiple years. During so she explains that she was able to learn alot.

“Every time I have taken peer tutoring, It has always been an incredible experience,” Durden shares. “It serves as a great place to form connections and learn valuable lessons.”

As March is Developmental disability Awareness month, these few weeks serve as a time for people to join together and form strong communities that can discuss ways to make areas more inclusive to those with IDD. March has been recognized as Developmental Disability Awareness Month since 1987. It was created with the intention of raising awareness on the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities and assisting them in utilizing their full potential.

Like most topics, The best way to bring awareness to the needs of people with IDD is with further education. The more students who get involved with educating themselves on the lives of those with IDD, the more accessible the world can become.

Many students who are enrolled in peer tutoring are continuing to push for this further education with plans to become future teachers. One peer, Senior Julian Brennan, shares how the course has played a role in unlocking future possibilities for her.

“Being a peer tutor has allowed me to realize what I want to pursue in the near future,” Brennan explains. “It has led me to go to school next year where I can to major within Special Education.”

With further education and a continued fight to break down the stereotypes pushed on people with disabilities, more opportunities can arise for people with IDD to lead regular lives and pursue their interests. While disabilities, Whether they be visible or not, may provide extra hurdles in the lives of those living with them, each person still provides unique and positive contributions to society that deserve to be shared. CONTROVERSY IN CONGRESS CURRENT INDIANA HOUSE BILLS, EXPLAINED Indiana Legislation is experiencing some controversy right now, mainly due to the introduction and debates surrounding HB1134 and HB1041. These bills, if passed, would impact HSE students and athletics and could change curriculum. The two bills have been in circulation since early January 2022, but more recent discussions over them have sparked public controversy.

HB1134 is a critical race theoryinspired bill. The bill was authored by representitive Anthony Cook. The official bill states “a parent of a student may request that the committee review specific learning material and presentation content of guest speakers. […] Requires a teacher or other employee of a qualified school, upon request, to allow a parent to review any learning material. Provides that a school corporation or qualified school shall not promote certain concepts as part of a course of instruction or in a curriculum or instructional program, or allow teachers or other employees to use supplemental learning materials to promote certain concepts regarding sex, race, ethnicity, religion, color, or national origin.”

This bill would give parents more control over what their kids are learning in classrooms. Teachers’ lesson plans would be posted online for approval by

a public committee before the start of the next school year and parents would have the option to opt their kids out of any lessons that they do not want them involved in. Additionally, the bill would ban teachers from talking about issues of sex, race, ethnicity, or religion. In sum, it bans divisive content in classrooms.

The bill passed through the House in early February and passed the Senate education committee around Feb. 21.

However, it was rejected by the Senate on Feb. 28.

HB1041 deals with the participation of transgender female students in public schools and would prohibit them from being on girls’ sports teams. The bill was authored by representative Michelle Davis. The bill would require schools to classify sports teams as either boy’s teams, girl’s teams, or coed teams and therefore prohibit students who are assigned male at birth from participating on teams classified as girls’ teams.

The official bill states “Requires, for purposes of interscholastic athletic events, school corporations, public schools, nonpublic schools and certain athletic associations to expressly designate an athletic team or sport as one of the following: (1) A male, men’s, or boys’ team or sport. (2) A female, women’s, or girls’ team or sport. (3) A coeducational

or mixed team or sport. Prohibits a male, based on the student’s biological sex at birth in accordance with the student’s genetics and reproductive biology, from participating on an athletic team or sport designated as being a female, women’s, or girls’ athletic team or sport.”

The bill passed the House in early February and the Senate education committee around Feb. 16. The bill was passed in a Senate vote on March 1.

HB 1134 and HB 1041 would alter school environments for many students around Indiana. As more votes and debates take place, make sure to stay informed through local news sources.

E-SPORTS EMERGES

NEW CLUB INTRODUCED, OFFERS STUDENTS OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY IN VIRTUAL Did you know that HSE has an E-Sports team? It is not common knowledge yet because the Fall of 2021 was their fi rst season. The E-Sports program here at HSE has two seasons a year with one in the Fall and the other in the Spring and during both of those seasons they compete in both a state and national league. Sophomore Chase Baker, the captain of the Rocket League team, gave some insight about how the team operates throughout the season.

“There is only two or three [meetings] per semester,” Baker said. “We basically go over general information about what the season will look like.”

Outside of those meetings there are also games that happen throughout the week that vary on frequency based on which games you participate in. The leagues that HSE operates with has many to choose from as long as the schools team meets the player requirement.

The game options are Rocket League, NBA2K22, Halo, Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, League of Legends, Valorant, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Freshman Cole Womack, who participates in the Rocket League, Valorant and League of Legends teams, shared his process with joining the team.

“I was on the website for our school and randomly found it,” Womack said.

There is a phrase in [Robots] that I have started to live by ever since I saw [the movie that goes] ‘see a need, fill a need.’

“It was really easy [to join the team], they were super open and welcome.”

Keaton Squires, math teacher and E-Sports sponsor here at HSE, shared why he started up the team.

“There is a phrase in [Robots] that I have started to live by ever since I saw [the movie that goes] ‘see a need, fi ll a need,’” Squires said. “I saw a need for this, so many high schools and colleges especially were starting to offer programs and scholarships and opportunities and money and success.”

The E-Sports industry as a whole has grown exponentially over recent years. According to viewsonic.com, Computer related jobs have had the highest expected growth since 2014 by a long shot and E-Sports at the pro level is projected to overtake the NBA in views. There are over 200 Colleges in the US that altogether offer over $15 million in scholarships a year. Squires fi nds it important to give our students a chance for careers in the realm of E-Sports.

“I don’t get it in a lot of ways but it’s a need for some of these kids, there is some kids in here [and] they want to design video games, this is what they want to do and compete,” Squires said.

“So, I just want to create a system to springboard them towards that path, I want to make the opportunity available.”

Squires himself has never been a competitive gamer but he understands

how impactful an E-Sports team could be for some of our students’ lives and has more than enough passion to help see it succeed.

Squires also wants people to understand what the team is about.

“This is more of a program because we are competing under the name of HSE High School against other high schools and we are competing for tournaments, we are competing for the championship, a state championship, a national championship,” Squires said.

“If it’s something you are interested in just make sure you understand that it’s a competitive league and there are practices and games.” A lot goes into making a club that requires high quality equipment to perform at the highest level and Squires understands that. He aims for the club to be able to win some of the necessary equipment to make the program the best it can be.

All matches that the team plays are streamed on Twitch for official recordkeeping, but it also means that enjoyers of E-sports have the opportunity to watch as well at their Twitch channel named HseEsports. The season for this year is already underway, so if you are interested try and fi nd some friends to start working with to make sure you are ready to go for the 2022-23 season. WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH: PAST & PRESENT CREATION OF MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION, HOW ITS CELEBRATED NOW Women’s History Month has been celebrated every March since 1987. The idea came from women’s voices being historically repressed in society and the intention is “to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security” (History.com). The entire month of March is seen as a time to reflect on the female heroes of our past and present, as well as honoring their legacies and the impacts they have made on the present day.

The origins of Women’s History Month stem from a week-long celebration started in 1978 by a school district in Sonoma, California. The district used this week to celebrate women’s contributions to society, culture and history.

The celebration consisted of the students attending these schools to participating in a “Real Woman” essay contest, followed by a parade in Santa Rosa. In the following years, the idea of women’s history week stretched throughout surrounding school districts, eventually reaching the national level. In 1980, President

Jimmy Carter issued a presidential proclamation that the week of March 8th (known as International Women’s Day) would be recognized as National Women’s History Week. The National Women’s History Project then petitioned for six years after the proclamation that it should be held over an entire month-long period; the change in celebration was seen by Congress and became an official month-long event for the first time in 1987.

Every year, Women’s History Month follows a theme on who to highlight that year. The theme for 2022 is “Women Providing Healing, Promoting Hope”. The themes are designated by the National Women’s History Alliance and they state that this year’s theme is “both a tribute to the ceaseless work of caregivers and frontline workers during this ongoing pandemic and also a recognition of the thousands of ways that women of all cultures have provided both healing and hope throughout history.” They further state that “This year, in particular, we are reminded of the importance of healers and caregivers who are helping to promote and sustain hope for the future.”

The NWHA encourages communities throughout the country to honor local women who bring and have historically brought these priceless gifts to their families, workplaces and neighborhoods,

women who, as counselors and clerics, artists and teachers, doctors, nurses, mothers and grandmothers listen, ease suffering, restore dignity and make decisions for our general as well as our personal welfare.” Essentially, Women’s History Month is not just to celebrate the famous women of the past, but to also celebrate loved ones of the present.

The United Nations has sponsored and strongly advocated for the celebration of women since 1975. When the United Nations General Assembly was asked why, they responded with “to recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security” (WomensHistoryMonth.gov).

The way the month is celebrated varies depending on the city, state, or even country. Some places celebrate with parades and parties, while other places celebrate by educating the population further and letting the women around know that they appreciate them and gifting them flowers. OPINION: OPTIONAL MASKS THOUGHTS ON MASKS BECOMING OPTIONAL Recently HSE Schools announced several updates concerning covid protocols.

The biggest update being that starting on Tuesday, Feb. 22, masks will become optional in school. At this time, masks are still required on school buses following federal mandate; quarantine requirements will currently continue as directed by the Indiana State Department of Health; and student instruction through Zoom will no longer be available for students in quarantine. Instead, teachers and students will need to use Canvas for emailing and assignments and any work can be placed in the front office for pick up or drop off.

antines across the district. From Feb. 14 - 27 there has been a total of 1,205,861 new cases in the US. In those two weeks, Indiana also had a total of 16,022 new cases. In Hamilton County there was 924 new cases.

The mask-optional announcement has elicited a variety of reactions from students, families and teachers. Royals were surprised, slightly worried, and some excited. There are concerns about covid cases rising, but students have also kept a positive mindset about the change.

“Masks becoming optional would give a sense of normal back at school after a long battle of online learning these last few years,” said sophomore Alyssa Damon. Although, I do understand people’s hesitations with masks becoming optional because of the increase in possible covid cases it may cause.” Several students have agreed on the fact that school and socializing has had such a great effect.

It is agreed that after virtual learning and the mask mandate, feeling a positive, radiating energy in school was difficult. “I would not prefer to do virtual learning now, said junior Sophie Boulet. I think that it was very difficult to form connections

The first week of school without masks felt a little odd in all honesty. I had been so used to wearing masks that I felt like I was forgetting something because I wasn’t wearing one.

It was a nice change though to be able to see people not just from the eyes up.

and friendships through virtual learning and forming solid relationships in high school years is very important. When we had a mask mandate, the overall energy of the school was low, and everyone just kept to themselves. Nobody was talking to each other, and everyone spent a lot more time in class on their phones instead of collaborating. The masks made talking to people awkward.”

After the first day of optional masks, “It feels like a lot more people are willing to interact with each other, in other words, senior Bentley Dombrow said.

The school feels more like the community it used to be.” Several students see a change in the classroom dynamic and teachers have too. A change of seeing “More smiling, more audible laughter, more ability to read facial expressions, and less times I have to ask a student to repeat themselves,” said English teacher Jill McGrath. Being in-person, learning and teaching had been taken for granted before the pandemic. As of now, Royals deeply value the interaction with each other and productive communication they get while learning in the school building. Story by Allyson Carney.

TIME IS TELLING

IMPACT OF GENERATIONAL TERMING Any student at HSE is considered Generation Z, or Gen Z. Most parents, teachers and admin are considered Millennials or Generation X. It’s possibly that. in more ways than one, generational terming impacts students and teachers alike.

“I see those generational divides more as I age,” English teacher Jacquie Carson said. “Obviously, when I started teaching, there were fewer years between my students and myself. Now, I notice it more with pop culture references and outlooks on the world.”

Many see generations as the collective group of individuals born around the same time. Generation terming, categorizing people based on their generational group, may not always seem present in the classroom, but every now and again the divides become visible.

“I don’t think that divide is insurmountable,” Carson said. “Just as students are learning, I try to continually put myself in my students’ shoes to assure that I am seeing their points of view as well.”

Certain aspects associated with different generations have turned into defining characteristics of groups.

According to the American Psychological Association, Generation Z is associated with technology, Millenials are seen as hopefulwith diverse and changed values, Generation X is known for skepticism and self-reliance, Boomers are seen as workaholics and the Silent Generation are seen as practical rule followers.

Some believe the stereotypes are disadventagous .

HOW DO GEN-Z STEREOTYPES IMPACT YOU?

“I think the older generation doesn’t understand Gen-Z and gives us a bad reputation when we are just trying to solve problems they created.”

“I believe there is a gap in the understanding of Gen-Z from other generations because of advancements and evelopements in society that other generations did not have access to growing up.”

“[Gen Z and Millenials] have been stereotyped due to the advncements on technology and through the assumptions that these generations are entitled,” English teacher Jill Mcgrath said. ‘I feel instead of everybody being entitled that actually this generation has more resources and they don’t need as much help or assistance. Therefore they know more going into different situations than older generations might expect.”

Generational gaps have the ability to separate older generations from modern ones, but these gaps possibly come from each generation’s stubbornness to not learn about generations other than their own. Though history is discussed in school and today’s society makes it difficult to exist without copious amounts of technology, generations do not seem to stretch out their hands to learn about other generations.

“Older generations tend to assume this generation is addicted to their phones and technology but have yet zero ability to look at their own technology and figure out if it is detrimental in their own lives,” McGrath said. For the most part I’ve seen [stereotypes] be detrimental unless we’re talking about like the WWII Generation which seems to be one thats held on a pedestal.”

Though these stereotypes inevitably present themselves today, it gives the opportunity to this current generation to end this practice. Can Generation Z do away with generational terming and take significance away from the phrase “born in the wrong generation,” or will the pattern continue with Generation Alpha.

LOCAL: PROBLEMS AT PURDUE

STUDENTS REACT TO POLICE BRUTALITY AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY

On Feb. 4 this year, a video featuring Adonis Tuggle, a junior at Purdue, was posted online following an incident with a Purdue University Police Officer.

In an interview with ABC news, Tuggle explained that he and his girlfriend were having a small “disagreement”, which led to neighbors calling the police on the couple. When Officer Selke arrived on scene, Tuggle’s girlfriend told the officer that the situation was under control, to which Tuggle tells media Selke responded with “shut the f--- up”. “I told him he had no reason to be disrespectful,” Tuggle said in an interview with ABC News. “He was yelling at her and she was yelling at him. I told my girlfriend to calm down and I heard him scream ‘OK buddy, you’re going down,’ and he threw me against the car.”

It was at this point when Tuggles’ girlfriend started recording the video that had been seen around the country. In the video recorded by Tuggles girlfriend, you can hear Tuggle yelling “stop it, please” and “you’re choking me”. For those who haven’t seen the video, Selke places his

elbow in Tuggles’ neck and the video stops.

Tuggle suffered no physical injuries and was arrested and charged with resisting arrest but was released after spending an hour in Tippecanoe County Jail.

Police brutality is something that can happen anywhere, but for many it’s shocking to see something happen so close to home. “When I saw what happened at Purdue, I was angry but more so terrified. Seeing that happen to a Black person at a school not that far from us makes me feel uneasy.” former student Barry Ramage said. “It just shows how police brutality in America really can happen anywhere.”

Students’ safety at Hamilton Southeastern is one of administrators and staff ’s top priority. With an event happening so close to home, many may find themselves asking, “Will it happen here? If so, when?”. “We, as an HSE community, have to acknowledge the plight that students of color face and not disagree or disrespect their experiences– even if they are difficult to hear,” junior Chelsea Murdock said. “It would be

absolute hypocrisy and blatant selfrighteous entitlement to deny our POC students’ stories and not give them the support they need.”

GLOBAL: UKRAINE UPDATES

RECAP, CURRENT INFORMATION ON RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT

By now you may have heard about the war going on in Ukraine. While still in the midst of the confl ict and with misinformation spreading through social media, it can be difficult to follow along with what has happened so far.

Russia and Ukraine have always had a complicated relationship, most notably with Russia having ruled Ukraine and the surrounding areas under the Soviet Union for many years. Then, in 1991, Ukraine became independent from Russia.

From this time, there has been increased tension between the two nations, escalating over time. With the drastic shift in 2019, when current Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected, beating the proRussia candidate Petro Poroshenko in a landslide victory of 73 – 24 percent of the votes, the tensions between the two nations have only increased further. This brings us to the events that transpired

in February 2022.

On Feb. 21. 2022 Russian President Vladimir Putin labelled Luhansk and Donetsk (two separatist regions in eastern Ukraine) as independent states. He then ordered Russian troops to go to these locations and act as “peacekeepers”. On Feb. 22, 2022, Putin is given permission by the Russian parliament to use military forces outside of Russia. On Feb. 23, 2022, Ukraine officially declares a nationwide state of emergency and on Feb. 24, 2022, Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine, attacking the capital Kyiv on Feb. 25, 2022.

At this point, thousands of casualties have occurred on both the Ukranian and Russian sides. There have been protests, bombings and thousands of people have fled from their homes to escape the war. Information on the numbers of people affected is ever changing and growing as the war

continues.

Outside of these nations, other world leaders such as the United States and the United Kingdom are taking steps to protect Ukraine and block Russia.

Many Russian banks have been blocked to prevent Russia from accessing funds for the war. Additionally, on March 2, 2022, the United Nations voted overwhelmingly to reprimand Russia for the invasion (supported by 141 of the 193 members) and demanded they remove their forces from Ukraine.

Currently, March 3, 2022, the war is still ongoing. The confl ict as a whole can be very overwhelming and HSE has several students who are directly impacted by the war. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT, RECOGNIZING FOREST IMPACT The date March 21 was declared the International Day of Forests in 2012 by the United Nations (UN). This day is to celebrate and bring awareness to all types of forests around the world.

Background of the day can be found on the United Nations web page and it states, “Countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns.”

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, global distribution of forests amongst 10 countries in 2020 the Russian Federation holds the most with 20.1%, Brazil holds 12.2%, Canada holds 8.5%, United States of America holds 7.6% and after the 10 countries the rest of the worlds forest combined is 33.9%. Further down the page, the FAO states that an estimated 420 million hectares of forest has been lost through conversion to other land use since 1990.

“I do small acts of conservation in my day-to-day life like taking shorter showers, making sure to turn off lights and avoiding one-use plastic,” said junior Sarah Austgen.

There are many things that humans can do to care and nurture the environment. Actions one can take are taking shorter showers to conserve energy like Austgen, recycling

when possible, lowering carbon emissions, and many more things that can be as simple as just sharing knowledge so more people can help.

“People can learn about the health of the environment by doing research or talking to someone who knows about the subject,” said sophomore Terran Jennings. “Others can help the environment by not being so wasteful, reuse what you can and don’t use an excessive number of products that can’t be reused.”

Trees are essential for human survival because they produce the oxygen that we breathe all over the world. Humans rely on trees and forests for many things like air to breathe, paper to write on, lumber to build, and many more things. Animals on the other hand use trees and forests for resting, nesting or living, and a place to hunt prey for food. With that information forest are a benefit for humans since we use tress for many things, but animals live in these trees and forests which is their home while humans use the trees to build their own homes. The

World Wildlife organization states that 300 million people worldwide live in forests and 1.6 billion depend on them for their means of support.

“I wasn’t even aware of International Day of Forests which I find quite concerning considering that forests are important to our environment and fight against climate change. I think an International Day of Forests is crucial and needs to be talked about and recognized more in the community,” says freshman Cayleigh Lewis. “After finding out about it I am very excited that forests are getting the fame they deserve.”

March 21 is put in place to represent, bring awareness and share knowledge to better the world’s forests and their environment. Putting forth the effort to help our environment has the possibility to make big changes. Students here at HSE have been fighting for the environment and plan to continuously put their effort in to help and share their wisdom to have people help along too. From now on, maybe think twice before leaving a room with the light on, taking long showers, driving a car, or leaving a piece of trash somewhere because as things build up, they may end up hurting the environment we live in.

Every year around this time, excitement is felt by avid basketball fans.

March is the time of March Madness, a NCAA basketball tournament. Each year, 68 teams compete in seven rounds for the national championship.

On Selection Sunday, the entire bracket is reviewed and revealed by the Selection Committee. This year, Selection Sunday is Mar. 13 at 6pm eastern and will be shown on the CBS TV channel.

ATHLETE OF THE ISSUE MEREDITH KUHL TRAIT: RESILIENCE

Senior Meredith Kuhl has cheered all four of her high school years, starting at JV and advancing to varsity for both football and basketball cheer. Kuhl was inspired to start cheering after seeing friends cheer at an assembly in junior high. Seeing the excitement and enthusiasm the cheerleaders had, she immediately knew she wanted to be a part of that. During her senior year, Kuhl has also helped to mentor the JV teams.

“The people I have met through cheer have made me want to continue cheering throughout high school. I have met some of my best friends and so many people that I never would have known before,” Kuhl said. “Cheer has taught me mainly about resilience. I have learned that I have to try and fail before I can improve.”

On The Flipside CHILDRENS BOOKS VS NOW

in many students’ childhoods.

In elementary school, my whole class was excited for the book fair. Watching the previews in the library would tell us how much money to bring to buy the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. My class would visit the library close to last, so I knew Dork Diaries would sell out before I had a chance to look through other options. The teachers’ pets would donate books to their personal classroom libraries in order to win better grades and favoritism.

By the time I got to junior

high, the book fair had changed its meaning. Now it was time to buy toys and random gadgets to annoy my teachers with-in class. Reading was not as cool anymore and people were not there to buy the actual books that were displayed. People grew out of their favorite stories while they grew out of their shoes.

The book fair will always be a prominent memory to look back on. It was one of my favorite things throughout my years at Thorpe Creek Elementary.
