ASCENDING ARTIST SOPHOMORE HANNAH GAO BECOMES YOUNGEST STUDENT ACCEPTED INTO AP ART PROGRAM When did you begin your interest in art?

I don’t know when I exactly started it, I’ve just always liked drawing as long as I can remember. I think it started out as just wanting to draw my favorite cartoon characters and cats.

Has anyone inspired you to pursue art?

One of my biggest inspirations to keep going is my dad.

He always supports my art and used to be an architect himself.

How have art prgrams at HSE pushed you?

Art programs at HSE have allowed me to create more unique work. It have given me a space at school to do what I love on a regular basis. The teachers, especially Mrs. Fritz, are supportive, and I feel like they really help you improve in terms of constructive critique as well as advice.

What have AP art classes taught you?

Art classes taught me to better manage my time and especially taught me to keep creating even if I have rough patches or a piece doesn’t turn out how I initially intended.

What has been your favorite piece you have created?

My favorite piece I have made so far was one of the assignments from drawing one. It’s a mildly surreal hand coming out of a paper bag that was made with graphite.

Do you plan on pursuing a career in art?

I don’t know what exactly my plans are post-high school, but if I were to go into art, I would do architecture.

As the youngest person in AP art, what advice do you want to give to others who have the same goal as you?

I would definitely say to other artists that they should be prepared for the amount of time, work and devotion that this class takes. It’s a very fun and rewarding class; however, it is a big commitment. It is a challenging class for all grade levels, not just for underclassman, because instead of the five or six pieces you make in a regular semester art class, you are submitting 15 or more works to College Board that go along with a theme you work with throughout the entire year. I was just lucky to be invited into the class early by my art teachers, and I work hard to complete consistent and quality work. However, I think if you’re passionate about art, it’s a class for sure worth taking!

OPINION ON: STANDARDIZED TESTS The words ‘standardized testing’ tends to have a negative connotation for a sizeable amount of the high school population. Along with the stress of homework and more challenging courses, many students are not excited about the opportunity for the additional pressure of standardized tests to be placed on their shoulders.

Test anxiety is relatively common among students, causing many people to perform worse on tests than they do in the classroom, which provides an inaccurate assessment of their knowledge. A pressure to perform well and meet certain expectations can cause students to overthink during a test and score lower than usual. Additionally, a test is only one snapshot in a student’s learning and cannot fully represent a student’s growth, nor does it consider the chance that a student performed poorly on one test but still worked hard and has the skills.

Despite the generally negative energy surrounding the tests, standardized tests do provide some benefits such as helping school districts plan curriculum and see benchmarks regarding learning. Low scores highlight areas of improvement in either the teaching style or curriculum so that changes can be made. In younger grades, it is an easy and accurate way to evaluate students’ progress in classes and skills like math, reading and writing. In high school environments, the tests focused on college readiness and skills like time management, following directions, and performance under pressure. According to the College Board, the SAT is specifically meant to help open doors to college and help students plan their potential careers and futures.

The Indiana Department of Education requires not only certain academic standards from all districts, but also the administration of certain standardized tests. The state uses information from these tests to analyze the general quality of education provided by the state.

While the state does not require SAT or ACT scores, many colleges do require applicants to take these exams and include them in applications to their schools.

“[Standardized testing] is helpful for the evaluation process of ourselves, as teachers,” Principal Janie Ulmer said. “Being able to evaluate what we’re doing well and what we need to work on helps us be a better school.”

So, despite the mixed views and arguments surrounding the issue, standardized testing is something that will be staying in schools for a while.

MILLION STUDENTS IN THE CLASS OF 2020 TOOK THE SAT

STUDENT SOCIAL MEDIAS STUDENTS CREATE MOCK INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS Students in our school are extremely creative, this is especially seen with social media accounts that have been created in recent years. Searching “HSE” on Instagram results in about 100 different pages. “I think these accounts are really funny and lighthearted,” said senior Enya Lopez. “A lot of people make random accounts for random stuff. I’m just glad nobody has gotten in trouble yet.”

Accounts like these give people a way to use their imagination while still writing essays and completing problems for their math class next period. @hsebadparking has become a reason for people to double-check if they are in the lines. One bad parking job can result in hundreds of students seeing and making fun of it. “My cousin actually had a Snapchat story dedicated to bad parking around her city and I thought it would be funny to make one for HSE,” said the anonymous owner of the account. “It made me laugh a lot and I wanted to bring it to life more.” This page has risen to be

one of the most talked-about accounts amongst the rest. Other schools such as Fishers, Brebeuf, and Cathedral also have accounts with the same idea.

The @hsesnores account has become an entertaining way to call people out who did not get enough sleep the night before.

The Instagram page has numerous photos of students napping in class. Whether they are pretending to be reading or doing their math homework, this page shows what they are really doing while the teacher is not looking.

While there are some lighthearted accounts like @gingers_of_hseee, there are controversial ones such as the @hseteachersalaries. The owner exposes the amount of money teachers make per year. The teacher salary page claims their information is legal and can be found on the internet, but the real question is if it is ethical.

Although there are still more accounts to be discussed, these have seemingly caught students’ attention the most. Since there

seem to be no consequences for posting on the accounts, students participate with no fear of getting in trouble. Next time you see a bad parking job, will you submit a picture to HSE Bad Parking?

ROYAL AMBASSADORS THANKING OUR AMBASSADORS The thought of coming to a new school, especially as large as HSE, can be scary for many. Students come to HSE from different schools, states or even countries.

Making that first friend and finding your way around a new school can be difficult.

HSE has a club that allows new students to feel welcome and comfortable.

Royal Ambassadors are students who help welcome new students to the Royal

family. They help show students around the school and are there to be their first friends here at HSE. These ambassadors guide new students throughout the year and they also give guided tours to the incoming eighthgraders as they start thinking about their high school career. These tours give current eighth-graders their first view of what their next four years are going to look like and get them excited for what is to come.

It is not just students that benefit from Royal Ambassadors. When new teachers arrive at HSE, ambassadors greet them with handwritten letters and sometimes flowers or donuts. Additionally, the ambassadors help at several awards programs throughout the school year.

“New students are relieved when they find out that the Royal Ambassador will have peer hosts ready for them on their first day to take to class, pick up from class, answer questions, and most importantly have someone to sit with

Mrs. Gray, Sponsor at lunch.” said club sponsor and counselor Vicki Gray. “I have had some of those students join Royal Ambassadors later because of the way it made them feel.”

SHELTER SHORTAGES

INDYS ANIMAL SHELTERS RUN LOW ON SPACE Animal shelters across the country have run low on space because of the pandemic.

Many people have not been able to take care of their pets and shelters have become overwhelmed and overcrowded with them as a result. The population of abandoned animals continues to grow while the space that shelters have is shrinking.

Cameron Moore, who runs the Madison County Humane society, had a few things to say about the overcrowding issue.

“Space is a critical component of an animal shelter. At the end of the day, space is a finite and limited resource that we can only stretch so thin.”

According to a National Geographic article, adoptions in the U.S in 2020 were lower than in 2019 despite shelters taking in fewer animals (with no returns) during this period. The article also specifies that the reduced operations and fewer animal intakes stem from staffing shortages.

Along with shortage of staff comes less veterinarians which are needed for many operations at animal shelters.

Between staffing issues, fewer intakes and a backlog of spay and neuter clients, shelters are struggling.

There are many shelters in the area that need help and there are many simple solutions to this problem. Firstly, fostering a pet is a great solution to help relieve overcrowding in shelters, even if it’s temporary. Another solution would be adopting an animal. Obviously, this is not an option for everyone, but anything can help. You can even volunteer at the

shelters to go walk the dogs or play with the cats to reduce their stress. The final solution is to donate to shelters, anything can help. Most shelters have a wish list full of items that can benefit the overcrowding issue.

Sophomore Brooke Daughtery is an animal lover. She commented on animal shelters and the shortage problem in them.

“I think [animal shelters] are great as long as they are no kill shelters and they treat the animals well. I think it’s important for communities to have them.”

Many other people care about this issue, including PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

According to PETA, “Because a growing number of animal shelters have begun to turn many animals away, more and more are ending up on the streets”. These animals are being treated quite poorly and deserve better than being turned away at the door.

There are many local non-kill shelters that can use help. Including, the Humane Society for Hamilton County, IndyHumane, Cats Haven and Southside Animal Shelter. All of these shelters are in Indiana and can benefit from assistance.

Lastly, as aformentioned there are many ways to reach out to the community to help animal shelters in need. Start a fundraiser or a drive for donations. Consider looking in your wallet and donating to a local shelter, it is that simple! Story by Trinity Mackenzie and Cassidy Hayes.

TUESDAY LOST SPECIES DAY Remembrance Day for Lost Species is a volunteer-led day of observation dedicated to mourning the many animals, plants, and insects that have become extinct.

Since its inaugural celebration in 2011, thousands around the globe have taken the time to hold memorials in remembrance of extinct species on November 30th.

The aim of this remembrance is to not only mourn the lost life, but also to celebrate the earth’s remaining biodiversity.

In the last 500 years, 900 animal species have gone extinct. Among the lost are the Spix’s Macaw, the Northern White Rhinoceros and the Yangtze River Dolphin.

Currently there are 16,306 species who are endangered, or close to extinction.

This Lost Species Day, you can join in on the global remembrance by picking up trash in a local animals’ environment, bringing up the topic of extinction in conversation to raise awareness for the subject, research how to support endangered animals near you and appreciate the biodiversity that surrounds you.

SEASONAL SADNESS

INFORMATION ON SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER For many, the autumn and winter months are a joyful period of upcoming holidays and breaks. However, for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) the change of weather triggers a downturned change in mood.

SAD is a form of depression which typically shows throughout fall and winter. Symptoms begin to diminish once spring arrives. SAD is linked to a shift in the internal circadian rhythm when there are fewer daylight hours. The symptoms mimic those of depressionloss of interest in activities, loss of energy, difficulty concentrating, etc.

“Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a depressive disorder that happens at a specific time of the year,” mental health professional Jillian Yee said. “Some symptoms include changes in mood (sad, depressed and/or irritable), negative thinking (more sensitive to criticism and/or self-critical), anhedonia (losing

interest in things one likes to do), low energy, lack of concentration, sleep changes and appetite changes.”

Students suffering from SAD may be undergoing a major mood change currently as the leaves start to change color and the first snow of the season falls. Symptoms may show through a disinterest in extracurriculars or less motivation to do schoolwork.

“I have noticed that I feel less motivated when it is dark outside earlier,” senior Bloem Montalvo said. “It is like my body thinks it is time for bed.”

Fortunately, there are methods to treat or manage this disorder. Light therapy is a method unique to this disorder that involves a patient sitting in front of a light therapy box at least once a week.

Increased exposure to light can help reverse the effects that the weather change takes on one’s mind and body.

CDC UPDATES VACCINE AGE LOWERED, BOOSTERS AVAILABLE The CDC has decided to grant children above the age of five the ability to get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine as of late October 2021. The authorization of youth ages 5-11 has been verified for the Pfizer-BioNTech dose only, the administration of the Moderna and J&J/Janssen have yet to be lowered to those under the age of 18.

J&J production and administration came to a halt on April 13, 2021. This was due to a rare and severe type of blood clot combined with low blood platelet levels occurring in people after receiving the vaccine.

FDA released an EUA, or emergency use authorization, of Pfizer vaccine on 12–17 year-olds beginning May 10, 2021. FDA authorizes EUA of PfizerBioNTech vaccine on 5–11 year-olds on October 29

Moderna and J&J have yet to become available to those under 18 years of age, although Moderna was rumored to start getting their approval to administer to 12-17 in June of 2021.

The J&J vaccine became FDA approved later in February.

The FDA approved and began administering the Pfizer vaccine December 11, 2020.

“During the summer, I feel like I have more time to do things,” Montalvo said.

“Because of the long days, I feel less stress about getting things done.”

Since warmer days are still far away, look out for those around you if they exhibit signs of seasonal affective disorder.

PAIN IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN GLOBAL AND LOCAL IMPACTS OF CARGO SHIP DELAYS

Have you noticed recently that every time you walk into a store, the shelves seem to be emptier? Or maybe you’ve noticed how some businesses are even closing a lot earlier than what seems normal. If you are or know a student who works within stores or within the customer service industry, you have probably especially noticed this. This is a result of a national shortages of both products and people. But what is causing this supply shortage?

There are a multitude of reasons this is happening. At the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, fewer people in the industry were working and were living from the stimulus checks due to being out of work.

Several workers noticed that these checks were bringing in more income than the minimum wage jobs they were originally working for. While these stimulus checks are no longer being sent out and people have slowly been getting back to work, consumers are still seeing the effects of this.

What is not often thought about is the people needed to deliver supplies. With fewer workers in general, there is now a more limited staff on the cargo ships that are delivering items needed for these businesses to run and even fewer truck

drivers delivering the products to their final locations. According to Chris Spear, the president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations, it is reported that the US trucking industry is short by approximately 80,000 truck drivers.

Mrs. Barrett, an economics teacher at HSE, shared her thoughts on the situation.

“In mine and many others’ lifetime, we have never really seen anything like this,” Barrett said. “While part of the reason for this is the repercussions of the pandemic, there are also many other outside factors coming into play here and causing these shortages.”

Another product of the pandemic has been the increase in people ordering larger volumes of items online. Since the dawn of online shopping in the 1990s, the amount of Americans have begun relying on online services has only increased over the years. With the limited workers, and increase in orders, it seems as though deliveries are taking a lot longer than expected.

overseas. Curently around 80 percent of all goods are carried in by sea. The clothes people order online, the foods that are stocked in local grocery stores, the Amazon order awaiting arrival are all examples of things typically delivered overseas via cargo ship.

While one can see how this is affecting larger companies, this can affect on more personal levels as well. Many students working retail and food service jobs have said that this shortage is affecting business and leaving customers upset with them. Due to the decrease in people working, certain companies are even having to close at a much earlier hour than they typically would.

Senior Mary Claire Lane has been a Starbucks employee for approximately a month and a half. Within this period, she has already seen the effects of the shortages. Both employee and supply shortages. When Lane was being trained, she was with multiple other new employees and they were placed within a closed store. This is not normally the case.

Usually new employees are trained while the store is open to get a feel for what Starbucks is really like. Lane provided us with some more insight into what exactly some of the experiences she has faced due to this shortage are.

“Since we have been so understaffed,” Lane said. “Employees have been temporarily moved to different stores for short periods of time to help with their staffing issues as well as certain locations closing for a few weeks at a time in order to train more people.”

This highlights another factor businesses are having to take into consideration, which is hours of operations. If a business does not have enough employees, they are forced to close before their regular closing time.

“Due to being short-staffed, we have closed at a variety of different times,” Lane said. “At the beginning of the shortage, we were closing as early as 3:00 pm. We have slowly pushed that to 5:00 pm and soon it will hopefully be back to normal as more stores are slowly opening back up.”

The inventory of supplies is another problem businesses are facing. For Starbucks specifically, if they do not have the supplies to make their drinks,

they are forced to turn down business. A combination of stores closing earlier and inventory being low is how the shortages have affected even a large, widely known store such as Starbucks.

Junior Addison Stindle is another student at HSE that works for a chain company. She has worked at Michael’s, the arts and crafts store, throughout a majority of the pandemic. She also shared her experiences working during this strange period.

“I find myself constantly having to tell customers that we don’t have something in stock,” Stindle said. “Not only does this influence our sales, but it influences how customers view our company as a whole even if it isn’t necessarily our fault.”

Other notable impacts of the shortage can be seen in a lack of food options in school lunches and in finding supplies for small businesses.

Sophomore Gloria Lane shared her own experiences owning a small business on Etsy named, The Bumblebee Factory,

where she sells her custom-made jewelry.

“I usually get my supplies from further away places, so it takes a long time to deliver in general,” Lane said. “I do feel as though the process is slower now, but I do not exactly know for sure.”

Since small businesses tend to order smaller amounts of product, they aren’t seeing as big of a shortage problem that larger companies and their employees are seeing.

“I can’t speak for everyone but since we have fewer customers, we buy smaller quantities that are still considered bulk but are nowhere near the size that big corporations need,” Lane explains.

“Obviously, everyone is different though and bigger small businesses are probably experiencing more of an issue with this.”

It does not help that now with the holiday season coming up more people are wanting to order gifts online in time for celebrations. In fear that the items will get stuck on the journey here, shoppers have started shopping way earlier than they normally would in past holiday seasons.

“Since our store contains lots of holiday items and that time of the year is nearing, those things are selling out extremely quick,” Stindle Said. We nearly sell out of all of our new holiday shipments in one weekend.”

Consumers have seen first-hand during the peak of the pandemic how out of hand things can get when there are shortages of items within our stores, from toilet paper to toys. With cargo ships getting

stuck in ports and certain jobs finding a harder time getting employees, it will not be surprising for us to continue seeing the effects this has on how we function within the economy we live in. Story by Ryan Luhmann and Madeline Nelsen.

COLDER CLIMATE COLDER WINTERS RESULT OF CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change has been a global issue that has gained prevelance in recent years. However, many might not realize just what effects climate change is causing. One in particular being colder winters.

In recent years, the need for heavier coats followed by earmuffs and gloves all to exit your house in the morning has become a necessity. These significantly cold winters are an effect of climate change. Climate change is the change in global or regional climate patters. It is presently being impacted heavily due to increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

“Winters could be harsher; flooding is more intense; droughts are more frequent,” Anna Michalak, a researcher at the Carnegie Institution for Science, said.

“By emitting greenhouse gasses, we’re not just warming temperatures, we’re perturbing the Earth’s entire system.”

According to BBC, colder winters are created by warm temperatures in the Artic as well as bomb cyclones and polar vortexes. These issues are projected to increase in future years. If not met with a solution soon, climate change will continue to only hurt the atmosphere, leading to a quite unknown future.

“I am terrified of climate change,” said senior Cameron Kestner. “Seeing the negative progression of our Earth’s environment is really scary to see. In the near future, our world will be completely different with fewer resources and more pollution.”

People can expect these issues to continue to grow, unless younger generations receive education in order to promote change. This is why the school’s AP Environmental Science class has been proven beneficial for students. The class goes into detail with biogeochemical cycles and the reasoning behind how we are polluting our earth.

Students are taught this to promote change in their lifestyles to provide more of a positive alternative that will help future generations.

“APES really helped me understand the impact of climate change,” former APES student Tyler Lacy said. “It made me realize how a simple change can affect our environment and pollution.”

Along with understanding the educational impacts of climate change, it is important to also understand how colder winters effect people’s day to day lives. Due to lower temperatures, people are more likely experience sickness, which in present day can send people into a frenzy. As the world is still fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, feeling sick can cause a person’s day to drastically change as the questions as to whether it is just a cold or COVID comes into play.

As cold winters continue to be an issue across the globe it is important to understand why the temperature is the way it is. The next time you step outside and are met with the sting of coldness, remember that it is climate change at play, and will only continue to worsen until a solution is enforced everywhere.

GIVING THANKS AROUND THE WORLD HOW OTHER COUNTRIES USE HOLIDAYS TO CELEBRATE THEIR CULTURE CANADA Canadian Thanksgiving is held on the second Monday in October. It is very popular despite not being recognized as a national holiday. Canadian Thanksgiving is about thanking God for a good harvest.

PUERTO RICO San Sebastian is a January holiday that celebrates Saint San Sebastian. It is often celebrated with a large parade down Calle San Sebastian in San Juan, with many citizens participating with colorful masks and vejigante costumes.

BRAZIL Republic Day is celebrated November 15 to commemorate when Brazil’s second Emperor, Dom Pedro II, was removed from power in 1898 and the United States of Brazil was declared.

C R O AT I A Statehood Day, or Dan državnosti as it’s called in Croatia, was originally celebrated on Oct. 8th when the first post-communist parliament was instituted in 1990. Today it is nationally recognized on June 25th, Croatia’s official split from Yugoslavia.

SCOTLAND Harvest in Scotland lasts throughout the fall season. Originating from farmer’s donating their excess crops, the people of Scotland donate foods to homeless shelters and the needy to give back to their community.

CHINA The National Day of the People’s Republic of China is celebrated on October 1st as a celebration of the formal proclamation of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

AUSTRALIA Australia Day is the country’s national holiday that marks the arrival of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales in 1788 and the raising of the flag of Great Britain

The holiday is always celebrated on January 26, unless the date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then the holiday is moved to the following Monday.

SOUTH AFRICA South Africa celebrates Human Rights Day on March 21 to commemorate the 1960 Sharpeville massacre and the 1976 protest of Soweto schoolchildren that resulted in several deaths. The South African holiday differs from many other nationalist holidays as they reflect on dark days in the country’s history.

INDIA Diwali is a major holiday celebrated

by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists as the festival of lights. The celebration symbolizes the “victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

“Celebrating Diwai means celebrating and life and love with my friends and family. I love lighting the lanterns and lamps because it another year over triumph over evil.”

INDOOR VS. OUTDOOR SPORTS

STUDENTS SHARE THEIR OPINIONS ON TURNOUT OF INDOOR, OUTDOOR SPORTS Outdoor sports, like football, have always tended to draw a bigger crowd.

When it comes to indoor sports, however, they tend to barely fill the bleachers.

Which leads to the question: why do more people choose to attend outdoor sports rather than indoor sports and what would make indoor sports more appealing to go to?

Junior Olivia Brown, who plays for the HSE Varsity girls basketball team, was asked why she thinks that the turnout of outdoor games tends to be higher than the turnout of indoor games. “I don’t think it has anything to do with the sports being outdoor or indoor,” Brown said. “I think that because football games are on Friday nights makes it much more convenient to go to than a game during the week.”

When senior Stephen Sydnor, a member of the HSE Varsity football team, was asked, he disagreed that outdoor games are more attended than indoor.

“I think people show up to more indoor sports besides football,” Sydnor said.

“Basketball is a very popular sport.

Football [just] has a different energy than indoor sports. I feel it’s more intense and shows a lot more spirit.” Sydnor argues.

Football is suggested to be the most attended sport, but he feels that people still show out to indoor sports, like basketball. “[But] it’s nothing like a Friday night.”

To add another perspective to the matter, two more students answered the same question and added in which they would rather go to. When asked if they would choose to go to an indoor or outdoor game. Both chose outdoor. Sophomore Matthew Myers says that the environment tends to be better. “[I choose] outdoor

because it’s more fun and louder,” Myers said. He also agrees with Brown about the convenience of the football games being on Friday nights that makes them easier to be attended.

Freshman Kenly Johnson thinks that it doesn’t necessarily matter if it is indoor or outdoor, but more sport by sport.

“Football tends to draw a big following by students and the community. Volleyball is fun to watch, but not as many people follow it as a sport in general. Basketball and football tend to have bigger followings because they are popular sports at all levels,” Johnson said. “I [would] choose outdoor because I love the environment of a big game. Bundling up or dressing down bring variety and fun.”

All in all, it appears that the students here at HSE don’t necessarily care whether games are inside or outside. They all choose to go to games that they know they will enjoy and support their school, showing that the sport has a greater meaning and importance than where the sport takes place. CHILDHOOD SPORT

HSE STUDENTS TALK ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE Many students are athletes here at HSE, however there are many students that go unrecognized for their ability as child athletes. Whether it’s football or ballet being a child athlete is more difficult than it lets on. Studies at Stanford show that being a child athlete has many benefits in the growth of a kid.

For example better vision, a healthier weight, better development, selfconfidence, and sportmanship are all benefits to being a child athlete .

These benefits can help grow this athlete into a well rounded adult, or in HSE’s case a well rounded teenager.

Teenagers can grow to exhibit traits of responsibility, teamwork, good communication skills, which can better prepare them for their adult lives. HSE students Jack Fellmy and Kamryn Williams have both been in a sport since their childhood. Fellmy is a gymnast and Kamyrn is a tap dancer.

Senior Jack Fellmy commented on skills he has gained from gymnastics. “I suppose I have perserverance,” Fellmy said. “I have kinda learned how to deal when life gets really difficult and slowing down is not much of an option.”

Most students have been in a typical sport like soccer and football. However, these HSE students participate in more unconventional sports. Both gymnastics and dance are sports that require many years of hard work and commitments.

These two students started at a very young age. Junior Kamryn Williams commented on her time in sports at a young age.

“I started dancing when I was around 3, this is my 15th season,” Williams said. “I think that just like any sport, it’s good to start young if you want to be good.”

These commitments are also a great benefits to being a child athlete. While there are many benefits to being a chld athlete, there are also many disadvantages.

According to howtoadult.com, the injuries and disadvantages of having a child in a sport are quite large. One third of child injuries are sports related. These injuries can have a long term affect in the child and their performance in their sport.

“I have of course been injured at some point in my dance career, I broke my elbow once and have had many stress fractures,” Williams said. “These took a few weeks to a month to heal.” Even though sports have their ups and downs thse students still enjoy their time in their respective sport. All in all, child athletes have varying experiences that we can learn about. Story

UNIFIED BASEBALL

JUNIOR STEPHANIE PENNY VOLUNTEERS AT UNIFIED BASEBALL GAME While there are numerous opportunities to volunteer within the Royal community, there is also an importance in going out and serving in the wider community as well. At a unified baseball game in Yorktown, Indiana on September 22, junior softball player Stephanie Penny did just that. Penny participated in the event with her club softball team, the Indiana Phoenixes, that includes players from schools all over central Indiana.

The Challenge League, as it’s called, runs through the JAA Leagues and gives students with disabilities a way to participate in sports. Players from all different schools, ages and backgrounds get together to play baseball and have fun.

This baseball game was not just about getting home runs or tagging outs though.

When asked about what made the game special Penny said, “My favorite part is at the beginning when you get to pair up with someone and spend the whole game

with them. You talk to them the whole time and a lot of them love to share things about their lives! They all love playing baseball and are so sweet.”

Penny’s team made a big impact on the players and parents involved.

“By helping we let the parents relax and watch their kids have fun,” said Penny. “It also helps the people who put together the game watch it and be able to help everyone.”

By helping in this extremely positive and lighthearted event, Penny was spreading the Royal spirit outside of school.

“What made the game really special was how excited everyone got to meet you,” said Penny. “Even if you weren’t their buddy everyone would come up to you and give high fives!”

Her example is great motivation for others to do activities that benefit others and help the community. There are dozens of community outreach organizations available or Royals could even reach out to

this one. “I would definitely recommend that people do this because they need more people to volunteer,” said Penny.

While you don’t have to go out and participate in a unified baseball game, it certainly is a prime example of how Royals are getting involved and making the world a better place one game at a time. Story by Jordan Daugherty.

ATHLETE OF THE ISSUE NOLAN SATTERFIELD TRAIT: COMPETITIVENESS

Senior Nolan Satterfield has been running from a very early age. His mother was a cross-country caoch, which allowed Satterfield to run at her practices as a child. The HSE cross-country team recently placed 2nd in the state championship. On an individual level, Satterfield finished 11th in state. He is thankful he was able to be surrounded by such a talented group and an amazing coach this year.

Satterfield will continue his running career by running cross-country and track at the University of Louisville.

“My favorite part about running cross-country is getting to race day and seeing my hard work pay off. It takes a lot of work to get to where me and my teammates got this year and to see it all pay off at the state meet is an incredible feeling. I decided to continue running in college because I feel like I still have so much potential in this sport. I found an amazing program and coach at Louisville that I feel like will continue to make me not only a better athlete but also a better person.” Nolan Satterfield, 12 HSENEWS
