Football coach Peter Gorga shares his experiences during the Vietnam War.

What was your role while serving in the Vietnam War? I was a special forces officer assigned to work with a combination of teams like the SEALS, reconnaissance, Special Forces and the Air Force version of special operations. Our mission was to go out and excute the policy of the United States and the officers above us.

How were you trested when you returned from Vietnam?

When we came back from Vietnam, [soldiers] were treated with a total lack of respect. We were spit on, we couldn’t get jobs and generally were looked down on by society as less than human beings. It was a time of unrest in the country when people were against the Vietnam War and, hence, they were against the servicemen and women who served there.

How did serving in Vietnam impact your life?

Serving in the military taught me the meaning of responsibility, duty, honor and the need to provide the younger generation, and the generation after, with the same sense of duty and honor.

How do people treat you now when they find out you are a veteran? Do they treat you specifically different on Veteran’s Day? The country has gotten past the Vietnam War and past the displeasantness of the War. The hatred [and] the lack of respect for the country and the service men today anybody in the armed forces are treated with respect in ceratin regions of the country, not all.

Why is it important to pay your respects toward veterans?

[Veterans] gave everyone the right to follow the Constitution and to live in this great country. Some, especially on Veteran’s Day, have paid the ultimate price with their life to ensure the freedoms that all of you want, [such as] the freedom to go to your school, the freedom to become what you want and the freedom to live your life wherever you want regardless of race, creed, color or national orgin.

Beyond the Bucket

RDM donations fund hospital, impact community When you drop your spare quarters and crumpled bills in the red buckets around school, do you think about what impact your money really has? At Riley Hospital, donations are help to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of children all around the state, including students from HSE. For junior Ava Bacon and senior Alec Carr, Riley Hospital for Children provided life-changing treatment made possible by the resources funded by the Riley Dance Marathon. At age 11, Ava was diagnosed with an Arnold Chiari Malformation and had to decide between taking OxyContin every day for the rest of her life to treat chronic headaches, or undergoing brain surgery. After suffering a six-month sustained concussion, Ava went through with the surgery two years ago.

Alec also underwent surgery at Riley this summer to correct a chest wall deformity called Pectus Excavatum, which compromised his breathing, heart and ability to participate in physical activity.

Thanks to Riley, Ava is now headache free and Alec no longer has breathing problems and is slowly regaining his strength after two surgeries. It wasn’t just the medicine that contributed to their recovery, but the resources Riley provided through donations from students.

“Riley is like a family and they open their heart to you,” Ava said. “The staff and hospital itself made me feel at home. I’m so thankful that Riley changed my life for the better.”

Last year alone, more than $20.2 million in donations went toward Riley’s pediatric research programs and patient care. This philanthropic support enables Riley to recruit talented investigators for their research teams that are already making breakthroughs in childhood illnesses such as Leukemia, Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis and heart defects. Greater funding for research helps the hospital secure larger federal grants to give children all

over the state more access to lifesaving treatments. These donations are making a difference in how patients like Ava and Alec are receiving care.

“My surgeon tried to make a personal connection with me and explained exactly what was going to happen,” Alec said. “I had a lot of complications after surgery and they put their patients before themselves; you could see that.”

Another priority for Riley Hospital is providing support and comfort for patients and their families during a sometimes scary and difficult time in their lives. Last year, $5.1 million in donations helped fund support and education programs in 2016 to help families cope with medical challenges. Riley provides fun activities such as bingo, karaoke and art therapy for patients of all ages to help take their minds off their illnesses and elevate the burden of being confined to a hospital as a child. Support is also offered to families to ensure meals and temporary housing are available during hospital stays, as well as helping families thrive in a time of need.

“They made my family feel comfortable with everything and it made it easier,” Ava said. “My parents were the ones nervous about [my surgery] so they explained everything in ways we could understand, not medical terms.”

Each penny donated to the Riley Children’s Foundation ensures that ground-breaking research continues so patients receive the life-changing care and support they need. Your donation goes far beyond the walls of Riley Hospital and is directly changing the lives of families all over the state and in our own community.

“People you don’t even know about in our own community are dealing with things [most people] couldn’t imagine,” Alec said. “It means a lot when you help them out. I know a lot of great things are happening [at Riley Hospital] and they’re helping out as best they can.” Story by Olivia Smith.

Students share Thanksgiving activities While Thanksgiving is a holiday for families to get together and reflect on what they are thankful for, some students participate in Thanksgiving traditions that are unique and go beyond the traditional turkey dinner and football game.

During this time of thanks, sophomore Harper Coombs surrounds herself with friends to celebrate the things she appreciates for. She values this act of celebrating the holiday because of the opportunity to tell her friends what they mean to her.

“I have my usual Thanksgiving with my family, but then also that weekend I have a Friendsgiving, Coombs said. “We all bring a favorite food to share, and say why we are thankful.”

However, some traditions are based off cultures, like senior Abigail Pereira whose family participates in a Canadian tradition each Thanksgiving. Pereia adopted this tradition into her family through her Canadian friends.

“Every year to commence dessert, the kids in the family take a mallet and each get a swing at a chocolate turkey.” Pereira said.

“Our family then counts down from five and all the kids wrestle for the chocolate pieces. We do this because we have friends in Canada and it is actually a Canadian Thanksgiving tradition.”

Although Thanksgiving is a time to be with family and count one’s blessings, some people such as sophomore William Rutherford spends the holiday with his family by getting a kickstart on the Christmas season.

“We sing Christmas carols together as a family and I also give a small performance,” Rutherford said. “I usually play some songs on my guitar for my family.”

No matter how one might celebrate Thanksgiving, whether a regular turkey or a chocolate turkey, it is an opportunity to enjoy time with loved ones and share one’s thankfulness. Story by Evelyn Eggers.

The Death of Retail?

Reviewing a tough year for the industry as 2017 ends As autumn ends, many children prepare by stocking their closets with snow gear and formulating a wish-list of gifts for the winter holidays. Just two years ago, the holiday season witnessed a decade high for toy sales. It may, then, come as a surprise to learn that industry giant Toys-R-Us filed for bankruptcy 14 weeks before Christmas 2017. According to USA Today, the 69-year-old chain of toy stores managed to maneuver into a plan that allows its branches to remain open and stocked for the winter, which brings in 40 percent of its sales all year. However the store may end up closing most, if not all, of its 1,600 locations in 2018 and 2019.

This announcement continued a trend in the economy dubbed the “Retail Apocalypse of 2017.” The year has seen the bankruptcy of nineteen chains, which has accounted for the closing of hundreds of stores nationwide. Hundreds more closings come from companies who are only surviving by downsizing, including J.C. Penney and Macy’s.

Each year various news outlets predict what companies will not make it through to the next. USA Today, which predicted the Payless bankruptcy for 2017, also predicts that the days of the department store Sears are numbered. Interestingly, appliance manufacturer Whirlpool announced in October that they will no longer supply to Sears, as they have been doing for more than a century due to pricing disagreements. According to the Washington Post, Sears has not made a profit since 2010 and has closed hundreds of stores already since January,

making the USA Today prediction all the more chilling.

When a company loses profit and runs out of money and into debt, they can be eligible for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The protection of bankruptcy affords large corporations the ability to settle their debts to their suppliers and reorganize their businesses to either shut down peacefully or make a comeback with financial help from other companies.

According to Investopedia, companies including General Motors and Chrysler, both of which received funding from the federal government, have gotten back on track and continue to operate despite having declared bankruptcy. Another example of success involves Marvel Comics declaring bankruptcy in 1996. Today the company is worth billions, supported primarily by its line of successful films, including this summer’s Spiderman: Homecoming, which made more than $300 million dollars alone (IMDb).

Technology manufacturer Apple was also close to bankruptcy in 1997 before being bailed out by its industry rival, Microsoft.

While it is possible for companies to make these comebacks, the recovery is entirely dependent on the help of others and the reason for the initial shutdown. The mentioned federal funding granted to General Motors and Chrysler came in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008 and the Great Recession (Investopedia). In the 1990s, Marvel Comics was still

Today, the company-killer thought to be responsible for the death of so many brands is online shopping.

While retail stores struggle to stay afloat, Amazon has risen in the past several years to be worth more than 500 billion dollars and, according to CNN Money, twice as much as Walmart. The net worth of CEO Jeff Bezos is now close to 90 billion dollars and he has on several occasions topped Bill Gates as the richest man in the world according to Forbes before sinking back down due to stock fluctuations.

In today’s busy world, the ease and accessibility that online shopping makes available to consumers helps them save time and money by having their goods delivered, rather than going to a retail store. The industry is still innovating, with Amazon’s endeavors ranging from using drones for quicker delivery, building a second headquarters for more balance

Indianapolis was one of many cities to enter the pool.

“I think [Amazon headquarters in Indianapolis] would be great,” Economics teacher Brenda Barrett said. “[The city already has] fulfillment centers now on the northwest side and the west side.”

The ability of the company to lead a nationwide competition between cities trying to win its business is another sign of its power in influence in the economy and in the world.

“I don’t go shopping anymore,” Barrett said. “I’ve become one of those ‘lazy’ Amazon shoppers.”

In a modern society which relies so heavily on technology, the death of brick and mortar retail stores in favor of online shopping makes sense, but the increasing annual deathrate can be surprising at times, especially when the announcement is from a business that seemed untouchable and irreplaceable. Perhaps the best way to handle times like these is to enjoy the massive “everything must go” sales and invest in Amazon Prime.

Conspiracy Theories There is something captivating about conspiracy theories. The human mind wants to zero in on the unknown, molding common knowledge with the numerous possibilities. Ambiguity draws humanity in. There is something that lurks in the mysterious, the creepy, the muddled truth that people can not look away from.

When a person lays awake at night in the darkness of their room, their eyes may focus on inanimate objects that take shape within the brain and conjure up a face. The person knows that there is nothing staring at them, yet their eyes refuse to look away until they can make out each object individually. This is in the same sense how humanity views conspiracy theories. Until there is a rational and complete solution to the event, humanity has a natural instinct to search for the truth. This is because human mind is rooted in the need to complete the cycle of

knowledge, and in instances where a situation is popular in the media, or significant to history, people can struggle to comprehend the unknown. John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, but he was killed before he testified.

The amount of vaguity left in an event as politically significant as this forces the human mind to attempt to create cognitive closure. When the mind can not comprehend the gap in closure, people unconsciously start searching for an alternative that can explain the truth. In addition to this, humanity wants big situations to be the result of big causes, it seems suspicious for large scale events to have simple solutions. While some argue that conspiracy theories take away from the truth, it is only natural, and deep wired within humanity to search for a deeper meaning. Story by Makenna Sisemore.

JFK Death Conspiracy One theory suggests Jackie played a role The assassination of former President John F. Kennedy is said to be one of the most controversial assassinations of all time, with many conspiracy theories stemming from it.

Amid the conspiracies, the FBI ruling states that Lee Harvey Oswald was the only assassin.

Conspiracy Theory Club member, sophomore Eliza Wilson, has a different idea of what may have happened at the scene.

“I believe that there were multiple shooters at the scene and that Lee Harvey Oswald was a planted scapegoat,” Wilson said. “I think that Jackie Kennedy was behind the whole assassination, and she definitely has motive.”

Although the official statement from the government stands firm, Wilson’s belief is not an uncommon theory.

Many Americans share her belief, as the video of President Kennedy’s assassination contains potentially confusing reactions from his wife.

“After all [of the] scandals and affairs the president allegedly had came out, [ Jackie Kennedy] became really upset and began

to work with the vice president and the government on a plan to assassinate President Kennedy,” Wilson said. “I know that when you go through a trauma, like watching someone you love get shot in front of you, some reaction must come out of you, but if you watch the video of when he first gets shot, she does not looked very concerned.”

This possible theory of who was behind President Kennedy’s murder may change the “role model” persona of the former First Lady that many Americans associate with her. “[If Jackie did kill President Kennedy], it was because of everything going on in the president and the struggles in their marriage,” Wilson said.

“It’s sad that someone so close to him could do something so awful.”

While this is one possible theory, other Kennedy assasination theories, such as the Umbrella Man, Grassy Knoll, and Babushka Lady, flood the minds of many. Story by Laura Stancato and Kiara ThomasPowell.

After the War Theory claims Hitler faked own death According to historians, Adolf Hitler died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1945. However, some rebuke this fact, claiming Hitler and and his wife, Ava Braun, faked their own deaths in order to evade capture. Members of the Conspiracy Theory Club agree.

“We found evidence that Hitler didn’t die and that he faked his death,” Consiracy Theory Club founder Rebecca Rhodes said.

“He might have traveled out of Germany, trying to hide and run.”

The most acccepted theory is that Hitler escaped to South America via submarine. Unlike some theories, there is evidence that supports the claim. Central Intelligance Agency documents released alongside the JFK files state the CIA investigated the theory until 1955. The documents explain that a former SS soldier, Phillip Citroen, claimed to have sat down with Hitler frequently in Cambodia after 1945.

The document reported that Citroen claimed to have contacted Hitler about once a month in Colombia. Citroen also said Hitler left Colombia for Argentina around January 1955.

Even though members of the CIA believed Citreon was not credible, more people have said they saw Hitler in South America after his supposed death. Also, two high-ranking Nazi officials, Joseph Mendele and Adolf Eichmann, were able to successfully escape to Argentina in 1945 and Brazil in 1946 respectively. Some have also highlighted visual similarities between Braun and Eva Perón, a former First Lady of Argentina.

“There was a really big comparison between [Hitler’s] wife, Ava Braun, in the pictures,” Rhodes said. “We think [Hitler and Braun] could have gotten away together.”

Comparing the conspiracy to others covered in Conspiracy Theory Club, Rhodes believes this theory is one of the more credible ones. This belief comes from the amount of evidence surrounding the theory.

“You can fi nd strong evidence, but then there’s also some topics that seem less credible,” Rhodes said. “I think the Hitler conspiracy theory is defi nitely more credible than other theories, especially with the evidence we found.” Story by Hayden Sisemore.

College vs. NFL Students discuss football preferences I feel like [the NFL] is the big leagues. Only the best get to the NFL. I guess it’s more entertaining because you know they’re good enough to be [in the NFL]. I think long passes and runs are really fun. You need a good quarter back to be able to throw a ball or a good running back to be able to run fast. Lately, since all the political side of the NFL came out, I feel like a lot of people are going back toward college football. But at the same time, I feel like college still isn’t as big as the NFL. [The NFL] was basically my whole life and my dad and I always watched it together. It was just something that we always had. It was just me and my sister growing up and she was the girly girl with my mom making crafts and I’d be watching football with my dad.

My dad is a big part of why I like football. I like the Green Bay Packers because my dad was never a team fan. He liked the sport so he told me I could pick my own team. I thought it was a big deal. I did some research and went into and was like ‘I like cheese’,. I was seven or eight years old and I was like ‘I’m going to be a cheese head.’ And it stuck. I love everyone on the team, going to the game and being in the atmosphere. I love it. This year I went to two games. I try to go to at least one to two games. Even when the Packers don’t have games sometimes we try to go to an open practice. I don’t like any team other than the Packers really. I hate the Patriots and Seahawks, those are the only teams that I despise. I hate the Cowboys, too, but only because of their fans. They just get so mad at each other. I’ll watch where the players are mic-ed up and just hearing the things players say to their rivals, theyliterallyhate them.Theywish theywere dead. It’s funny because sometimes on rival teams they can trade players. You’re sitting there watching at home and games can seem to drag on but at the game feels like 20 minutes.

I think college football is more entertaining. It’s all mainlystudents.

They are more fired up about the game and I think the players are more passionate because they are all playing hard to get drafted into the NFL. In the NFL, they are already making millions of dollars. The college guys are still trying to prove themselves which I think plays a big part in how hard they work. The fans are better in college football because if you look at the NFL games, lower level teams anywhere are going to have empty seats, but I think that the atmosphere for a game at an Ohio State game on a Saturday night is going be much better than the NFL. I think the college players try hard because they want to win just like any competitor would. At the same time if the season isn’t going well in the NFL, or they aren’t winning they are just there to collect a paycheck. It’s different for college because they aren’t paid yet. They should be getting paid because a lot of them are already going to school for free, but the amount of money they bring in for the school; like college basketball and football brings in tons of money for the school. Tons of revenue. I’ve just grown up going to Ohio State games with my grandpa and my dad. As far back as I can remember I’ve been going to the stadium for games. Before high school soccer started I probably went to three to four home games a year.

Sincehigh school started it’s in the same season. I’ll go to the bowl game so last year I went to Arizona for the college football playoff for Ohio State. Ohio State got killed so it wasn’t fun but now I go to about two to three times. The fans aren’t into it as much in the NFL. You can tell just from watching like a pre-game kickoff. All the college fans are jumping around getting hype and all the NFL people are sittingwith theirfour-year-oldkids on a Sunday at 1:00 p.m. just there to watch the game and hopefully see a win.

Fantasy Football Students share thoughts on Fantasy football Acording to ESPN, Fantasy Football was created by Bill Winkenbach in 1962, because he was in a hotel room bored when he drew up the idea. Since that day Fantasy Football has been utilized to make billions of dollars by professional “fantasy players.” Fantasy Football is a team that is electronically drafted at a set date and time before the NFL season starts. The team is then manipulated in set lineups in order for the team to combine for the most points. Fantasy matchups are played in a head-to-head format like a regular NFL game, whichever team gets the most points during that week wins the matchup. Leagues go from week one of the NFL season to week 16. The name “Fantasy Football” comes from being able to combine the best players in the NFL and making a team only possible in a “fantasy.”

“The purpose of playing Fantasy Football is to bring attention to NFL games we wouldnt normaly watch,” junior John Cherry said.

“It makes the games a little more entising to watch, it’s not just a normal football game when you have your players playing.”

The fantasy game has made people billions of dollars since the time it was created, however most people just play for fun.

“Our fantasy leagues purpose is to just for a bunch of friends to have some fun,” junior Blake Ratlliff stated. “And to partake in some friendly competition.” The fantasy games are played on different formats such as ESPN Fantasy, Yahoo Sports or NFL Fantasy Football. All of which are in an app form for access to set your lineups on the go.

Some of the NFL players dont like the idea of fantasy becasue it exploits their abilities. However it is something that will likely continue to be played for years to come. Story by Skylar Hettenbach.

He wasn’t my number one pick, but he’s my favorite player to watch right now: Kareem Hunt. I like picking rookies and having them come through for me.

What strategies do you have to beat your opponents?

In my money league we have individual defensive players and not a lot of people know their defense players that well, so I always like to pick a really strong defense and use that to win.

Which player in your opinion is the most dominant and how could this be beneficial to your team?

I think Carlos Hyde and Travis Kelce are fun to watch and those two are probably my top right now, I don’t have many strong wide receivers on my money league, I have good running backs.

What do you get when you win/lose?

Winners get 200 bucks on my money league. I’ve won the league twice, got runner up once, got third place once.

Students share favorite fall trends Every decade has its own set of particular fashion trends, statement jewelry and trademark shoes. Trends in fashion in 2017 have stemmed from different clothing styles from various decades, like jean jackets, overalls, tight rolled jeans, denim skirts, flannels, bright patterns, Vans and Dr. Martens. Fresh ideas from previous generations and decades are continuing to influence current fashion trends.

“Fashion trends go in a 25-30 year cycle,” Family and Consumer Science teacher Elizabeth Trinkle said. “The 90’s had many features of the early 70’s. Designers look to past decades for inspiration and the oversized look of the 90’s is definitely coming back”.

Another reason 90’s fashion is returning is the newfound love of 90’s music and pop culture. Bands such as Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers have remained popular.

New shows such as Stranger Things have created feelings of nostalgia in viewers, showcasing the style of the time period.

Fashion is a componenet of pop culture that can very much be driven by other factors. New trends surface every year, but there are certain “classic” styles that remain popular. Story by Kersti Hash.

Movie Previews Shows coming to theaters soon Disney Pixar’s Coco will be taking a closer look into the Day of the Dead starting November 22. Spanish teacher Vicky Lazaga discusses the cultural accuracy of the film.

“It looks like it has a lot of information about the Day of the Dead,” Lazaga said. “This one seems to be focusing on the importance of family, which is definitely a characteristic of Latino cultures. There are a lot of cool special effects and I think that it is a good representation of the Mexican culture. It looks like a good movie to learn about culture and get some more information about Day of the Dead.”

Star Wars will be returning to the big screen Dec. 15, however, tickets went on sale Oct. 9. Senior Nathan Brown reserved his seats months in advance out of appreciation for the films.

“The writers go so in depth that everything from the originals to the new trilogy all connect and overlap,” Brown said. “This makes it so easy to get into and for this new movie considering the title of the movie and the return of Luke, I’m expecting something huge.”

Pitch Perfect will be making its third appearance in theaters Dec. 22. Senior Rylan Bussleburg has seen both of the previous films and has plans to see the third.

“I love acapella music and humor both so much, so combining the two made some of my favorite movies I’ve ever seen,” Bussleburg said. “The characters are perfect and the music is amazing. I know every word to every song and most lines Fat Amy has in the movie. I’m so excited for the third movie, because I know it will be full of more laughter and catchy music.”

What movie are you excited to see?

“I am excited to see Coco becuase I look forward to seeing the puppy in it.”

Movie Trends

Big budget doesn’t guarantee success

With summer box office season over, fall movies are in. Many of this summer’s biggest budget movies are sequels or spinoffs, which are projected by production companies to bring in money. However, these movies did not make their projection, or lived up to the success of their formers.

So, if those are failing, then it may become harder to determine what will make a movie successful. Senior Spencer Lawson says it’s all in the writing.

“Good characters are one of the most important reasons that a movie is successful,” Lawson said. “If the characters are interesting and unique they can draw crowd favor.”

However, senior Cassie Barnhill disagrees and believes that a movies marketing plays a larger role in its success.

“It’s all about the hype a movie gets,” Barnhill said. “The more promotion a film gets, the more likely people are going to go see it.”.

Barnhill also argues that projected blockbusters are one of the most important things that production companies look for.

“Independent films are great and works of art,” Barnhill said. “But if a movie isn’t a blockbuster, it’s unlikely that it’s going to see a lot of success.” Story by Katelyn Hartman.

Conspiracy theories are born each time a major or controversial event takes place, as individuals search to find answers and develop new ideas of what truly happened.

As we hear stories of potential new conspiracies in the news, interest levels have resurfaced as the federal government has discussed and even begun to release files in relation to the John F. Kennedy assassination.

The nationwide interest bled into the halls of the school, as conspiracy theories continue to be central topics in which students immerse themselves. The emergence of a Conspiracy Theory Club has caused these ideas to go further than lunch table discussion topics.

For this issue of The Orb, we decided to focus in on specific conspiracy theoriesthatstudents andteachers find interesting.Through gaining insight from these members of the school, we discovered the commonality that conspiracytheories contain among individuals of varying ages, connecting members of the school through a shared interest of the countless possibilities.

Whether you agree with these theories or not, the opinions of fellow classmates or teachers are worthwhile to listen. Tackling these controversial conspiracy theories showed members of our staff how there are always various sides to a story which need to be considered.
