NEW ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL DISCUSSES CAREER TRANSITION, INTERESTS Why did you come to HSE? I came because of the school’s good reputation and its large size. I also love the diversity here, as I value that in a community.

Everyone’s been friendly and welcoming. I love the job, including interacting with students and the work that I get to do.

What are your goals for your first year?

I’m interested in making new connections and forming supportive relationships. Also, I am willing to be a good listener for student input.

Why did you choose to pursue the career that you did?

I started in education as an English teacher because of my love for the subject. I decided to get involved in administration for the leadership aspect and the ability to impact an entire school.

What are your interests?

My main focus is my two kids. They are currently in elementary school, and I get involved in supporting them with their activities. Additionally, I enjoy reading, seeing movies and going to concerts and parks. My favorite places to go with my family are Holliday Park and Spencer Farms.

What are some interesting facts about you?

I lived in Singapore in the eighth grade and went to an international school. I enjoyed living there. It was interesting to experience a different culture and have friends from different countries. It was in a large city, but it was also very safe.

Also, I’ve participated in two half marathons.

What advice do you have for students?

Take advantage of the help that is available. The staff around you want to help you. Make sure to take the initiative and reach out to get any help that you need.

HOMECOMING’S ARRIVAL AT HSE SOUTHEASTERN SAFETY Football games are amongst the most attended student events at HSE especially the Homecoming game on September 20 against Westfield. Students of all ages fill the stands in their Royal gear to cheer on their classmates as they take on the week’s opponent.

Although this sporting event can be fun, there are specific rules in place to keep spectators safe.

“We want our kids to go all out when it comes to spirit, but we don’t want [paint] to become a safety issue or a clean up issue,” Athletic Director Jim Self said. “At one point, we worried about when it’s really hot the paint doesn’t allow you to sweat, many students run into overheating issues.”

School spirit is something we take pride in the school. As a school, one of the goals each year is to earn the Channel 8 spirit banner.

“The standard rule when it comes to school spirit is have fun, cheer on the Royals, make it about us [the school] and don’t make it about the opposing team,” Self said. “When that focus becomes about another team or another individual or an official, I think that crosses a line of good sportsmanship.”

Weather is also another potential issue for outdoor events. Players will continue to play in the rain until lightning is reported. Umbrellas have not been banned but if it becomes a problem then it will eventually be addressed. In the case of game delay or other weather emergencies students will be directed to the athletic entrances and held in the gym. When released, students must listen to the officials to fill the stands in an orderly fashion.

“Game delays are monitered by game officials along with the help of athletic directors,” Self said. “From the last strike of lightning the game is delayed thirty minutes.”

There has never been an unwanted visitor emergency at our sporting events but police are stationed at each entrance and exit and are roaming the grounds before, during and after the game. With many people going in and out it is important to remember if you see something, say something.

“We work with the city of Fishers Police Department, and the city of Fishers paramedics to make sure we’re prepared,” Self said.

“When it comes to a lockdown situation, you are just so thankful for those first responders that really would be in control of how we handle that situation.”

During football games, fans should not walk back and forth between sides of the stands. That is to keep everyone under control and makes it easier for both sides to manage crowd size.

“You wouldn’t want our blue flags or blue crew running through the Fishers side,” Self said. “It’s just going to create problems, so let’s divide them into their respective sections and hug eachother after the game.”

At the Homecoming game, half time is extended and is run differently from a normal halftime. Spectators get to watch some of their own being recognized and crowned king and queen. There are multiple moving parts and for everyone to be able to experience the events of homecoming, it is important for everyone to listen to what is happening on the field. Student Council works hard all semester to make sure Homecoming is special for everyone.

“Homecoming is an event. It’s not all about the football game.” Self said. “It’s about the band performance, the dance team performance and the cheerleading. It’s not just the young men out there playing football.”

Homecoming is a spectacle from the football game to the dance. It is a game to show out to and celebrate the HSE alumni and the students curently in attedance. Story by Kennedy Fisher.

SCHOOL SAFETY

ENSURING SECURITY WITH POLICIES Across the country, security for students is becoming increasingly more important. If students don’t feel safe in their learning environment, it becomes much more difficult to focus on academics. According to a 2015 study done by The Indicators of School Safety, more than forty-three percent of teachers strongly agreed that safety misconduct interfered with their teaching. With awareness of security threats becoming larger, students and administrators are forced to develop new procedures in order to ensure student safety and protection.

“We would like [students] to have their ID’s on them at all times.” [safety officer and administrator Holly Reine said.] “It helps let administrators know that you are supposed to be here.

If they wore it around their neck on a lanyard, that would be even better.”

Along with those procedures, there are a couple minor things students can all do to improve feeling of security. For example, it is a necessity to report suspicious behavior to an administrator as soon as it is seen. Also, it is very important for everyone to know the protocol for a dangerous situation. Additionally, staying aware of surroundings will help contribute to the well-being of the school, as it can prevent a security breach from going unnoticed.

“Also, we like teachers to keep their doors locked while they’re teaching because [as research suggests] no one has ever been harmed behind a locked door,” Reine said. “In the future, those are things that we would really like to see happen.”

These new procedures also bring a responsibility for everyone involved with the school. If students have a strong dedication to these policies, there is potential for a positive change in the school. operates, and the ability to cut off the chance for any future security problem.

When it comes to safety issues between students, the solution needs a different type of attention. The main sources of conflict between students roots from physical or verbal misconduct between each other.

For these types of issues to be fixed, the answer lies in a mutual understanding between students and not just an increase on rule restrictions. The most effective way to combat situations like that is to reach the origins of the problem and work to find a proactive solution that benefits the emotional state of each student, instead of furthering the issue by not providing it the proper attention. For students in a position that makes them feel unsafe at school because of a conflict, the best solution is to seek help from an administrator, counselor or teacher.

To really have a proactive safety policy, it will require work from each student, teacher and staff member to make these policies a part of the school’s daily operations.

Staying up-to-date on specifics for every aspect of school safety can only benefit the daily functions of HSE. Story by Lucas Bisesi.

DIGITAL ALL SPORTS PASSES New in 2019, HSE Athletics has made digital versions of an all-sports pass, a punch pass and game-day football tickets available on a mobile phone. Instead of having to carry a plastic all-sports pass, a paper punch pass or ticket, fans can now use a phone pass. Those interested in purchasing a phone pass can visit the HSE Athletics website (www.hseroyalsathletics.com), click on the “more” tab and then click on “GoFan Digital Tickets.”

For events with large anticipated attendance (football, basketball, Mudsock), it is recommend that users prepare phones with the validate screen prior to arrival to the game.

Fans should understand that the GoFan app is not just a HSENEWS photograph of a plastic pass.

WHOLE NEW WORLD

SOPHOMORE GEORGIA COLLINS STARTS NEW CHAPTER AT HSE As the school year begins and people start to get back into their regular routines, sophomore Georgia Collins is making an entirely different transition. For the past eight years, Collins has been living in Germany.

“Living in Germany was so amazing,” Collins said. “Everyone there was really accepting, and the food was so good.”

Collins was six years old when she moved from her home in Texas to Germany due to her father’s job in the military. Although an adjustment, Collins understands her father’s duties and the reasoning for the family’s move.

“Transitioning to the US was really hard because people here are used to people not really leaving or coming so being from a completely different continent made me feel really alienated,” Collins said.

“Everything is a lot more expensive here and there is not as much culture as there is in Europe.”

While in Germany, Collins met many other students who were facing similar situations.

These students were used to moving frequently and making new friends; Collins was openly welcomed.

However, she was shocked when originally trying to communicate in Germany.

“It was really difficult to try and pick up the language when they spoke English to you all the time,” Collins said. “I picked it

up a little, and I was able to go up somewhere and order something to eat.”

Additionally, Collins noticed things in Germany that differ from the United States. Collins noticed that there were no speed limits on the highway. There were no billboards or any distractions on either side of the road. The view mostly consisted of farmlands. In Germany, Collins went to the area downtown where all the shops were located along with many apartment buildings to buy things.

Another thing Collins noticed is the difference between the public transportation systems.

“You could fly anywhere for 20 euros or get on a train,” Collins said. “In the US, public transportation seems like it doesn’t exist and everything’s really chaotic.”

Throughout her time in Germany, Collins continued to stay updated with the current events happening in the United States. Collins was unsure how long her time in Germany would be, so she wanted to make sure she was updated and prepared for her return to the United States.

“I tried really hard to keep up with as much as possible”, Collins said. “Especially all the things about the mass shootings and new laws coming in.”

Living in Germany will always be a big part of Collins’ life. The things she learned there and the experiences she had will stay with Collins for the rest of her life. Story by Emily Crousore.

COFFEE MADE OLD SCHOOL NEW CAFÉ OPENS IN FORMER 1902 SCHOOLHOUSE Most people would consider a schoolhouse that has been around for over 100 years a lost cause. The Tappendorf family saw this building as an opportunity to build a place where people could come together over coffee and good food.

When Schoolhouse 7 first opened in 1902, it was the seventh school in Fall Creek Township, which housed first through eighth grade. Forty years later it closed, but that was not the end of its story.

For a while, the building was used as a home for Fishers residents and was on and off the real estate market.

In 2017, Curt Tappendorf was driving to his daughter’s parent teacher conference at Hamilton Southeastern Intermediate and Junior High when he first noticed the property.

“My dad has always been looking around this area for something like a breakfast place,” freshman Brianna Tappendorf said. “For my parent-teacher conference in seventh grade, he was driving by and saw that this was for sale and he just bought it that night without telling my mom.”

The school has seen many renovations and changes since then.

The majority of it was torn down for construction, except the walls. All that was left was the old brick and mounds of gravel on the ground.

Weather played a big factor in the renovation process. Rain delayed work for as long as three weeks and made tasks more difficult to complete Crystal Clotfelter, the general manager, participated in the restoration. She watched the building slowly transform from a rundown home to a modern café.

“The renovation was adventurous and it was a lot of fun,” Clotfelter said. “Although it was a long process, it was neat seeing the building take on a new life.”

Now, two years later from when the Tappendorfs first purchased the schoolhouse, construction is finally finished and the café is open to customers.

The café has two levels for seating, which includes a patio and a drive-thru. Inspired by high school grades, the cup sizes are called freshman, senior and graduate.

The menu features a variety of coffees, desserts, breakfasts and lunches. Along with that, there are a few items that are signature to Schoolhouse 7, such as homemade cookies and pastries.

Since the cafe is situated in close proximity to many schools in the district, it is already frequented by students. The atmosphere is fitting for studying, club meetings or catching up with friends.

The bulk of the workers are students at surrounding high schools, which adds to the familiarity of the environment for teenagers and younger patrons.

Customer service is a significant part of the cafe to the employees and owners. Staff members strive to make the place as comfortable as possible for everyone.

“Community and family is a main goal for us,” Clotfelter said.

“We want to open a place where people come and the workers know your name, we know each other and you feel welcome.”

After two years of work to restore the 1902 schoolhouse to what it is today, the cafe is ready to become a central appeal of Fishers. Story and photo by Lainee Kirk.

cross the globe, standards and expectations often are put onto not only students but the educational environment itself. In the United States, communities often fight for the best schooling possible for the children in their districts, and although not all areas have as much funding for schools, there tends to be an effort to make education a top priority.

It is often said that a person’s work environment can have an effect on the outcome of their work. Numerous studies show that the better the surroundings of a person, their ability to work diligently and accurately is strengthened. Therefore, the physical state of the school’s classrooms and hallways plays a role in how effectively students can learn.

History teacher Linsey Mayhem also agrees that a person’s work enviroment can have effect on their productivity. Mayhem sees the B wing as numbered very oddly which makes it difficult for students and parents to find classrooms.

“I know a student’s enviroment affects their learning ability,” said Mayhem. “The more stress that you place on students can the less productive they are. Finding a classroom should be so simple yet, it is a stressful part of a students days.”

At HSE, students travel from class to class, from hall to hall, the environment they are in changes with them. In the CCA, which was finished in 2015, lies an open concept that allows students to find comfort while going about their studies. Some argue that this layout makes for distraction, but others find that the updated area gives students the opportunity to learn without the constant reminder of renovations needed in the building.

The school building was orginally built in 1967 and updates in the A and B wing have been minimum compared to the vast different advances in the CCA and adjoining areas. As many can observe, there are multiple classrooms in the A and B wings with raised elevated carpet causing a tripping hazard. Classroms in the A and B wing have little to no naturual light while the CCA has an entire wall of windows in the cafe.

New principal Chad Cripe has faith in HSE and hopes for it to continue to improve in rankings.

“I think our school has the potential to be the best school in the nation,” Cripe said. “Our school as a whole just needs to put it forward.”

THE BEST SCHOOL: IN COMPARSION According to thebestschools.org, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology holds the title as the best high school in the nation as of 2018. In terms of the school’s physical structure, it is characterized by a mix of modern and classic architecture. On the outside, Thomas Jefferson has mulitple white pillars and a brick building simliar to many colleges and historical buildings. From the front entrance, it features bright open windows and high ceilings, similiar to the CCA. However, the difference lies in the fact that the CCA is only a portion of the school while Thomas Jefferson maintains the same open and modern design throughout the entire interior of the building.

Compared to Thomas Jefferson, HSE holds many differences.

HSE has numerous cosmetic issues across the school, including numerous cracks, open pipes and ruffles in the carpet that pose a safety threat to students and staff.

Math teacher Letitia McCallister taught at a school with more outdated conditions. The school she taught at had no air conditioning, had chalkboards and only two electrical plugs per classroom. Nevertheless, McCallister still believes HSE has room for improvement, especially in terms of classroom technology.

“I feel that renovating is essential in order to make sure our students are prepared for whatever comes next in their lives,” McCallister said. “If we ask businesses what they want, they will tell [us] they want employees who are ready to use the newest equipment and technology.”

Since Cripe has taken the position as principal, changes to the A and B wings have already been made. A whiteboard was placed in the main hallway to give students a way to brainstorm, use creativity to further studies and be involved with school events.

Eventually, Cripe would like to open up the A and B wings more in a way similar to the CCA by including more windows and lights. Cripe already has a plan to begin school renovation.

“We have something called a capitial project,” Cripe said. “It’s a ten year process to improve the school in many different ways including opening up the A and B wings and have more soft sittings similiar to the CCA.”

CONTRASTING THOUGHTS According to understood.org, one-third of American school facilities need updates. Although this may be true, many students and staff find that these updates cause more of a disturbance than the renovations address. As a result of construction, disruptful noises and the loss of space could cause difficulties for students and staff to continue to learn and develop. Construction, additions and renovations are nothing new to HSE schools.

“I think that there are a lot of things that need to be fixed and renovated in the school, so I’m glad that they have started construction,” junior Jacob Weber said. “But, the noise that the workers make can sometimes be an issue, and it really limits what some classes are able to do.”

Another obstacle to consider is price of renovating the school, which Cripe stated is currently unknown because of the long process it takes to complete updates.

“Nothing is going to be done immediately of course,” Cripe said. “We just need to continue to improve everyday.”

While the CCA proved to be beneficial in many different ways, the CCA was an expansion, not an update, on rooms that were already built. Making changes to the A and B wings will be making alterations to spaces the school already occupies rather than producing an adjustment to something completely new.

Also, in order to increase the district’s funds for school renovations, a referendum would have to be passed. This would mean the increased funding would have to be approved by a majority vote across the district.

Regardless of where the budget is spent, it will go somewhere to help the school succeed and hopefully current students attending Hamilton Southeastern will be able to see it happen.

“We just need to continue to do our best and bring our best,” Cripe said. “And follow this mindset every single day.”

Southeastern Elementary School, a new school to the district which resembles the CCA, was a $22.6 million dollar project. The design of the school was created with large windows and natural lighting to spark curiosity and lead to student research. There was one cafeteria in the school at the time.

The F section of the school was added in 1996.

This served as the math and business wing of the school.

A freshman campus opened at what is now Fall Creek Junior High due to overcrowding at the high school.

The College and Career Academy(CCA) was built as a way for seniors to prepare for life after high school. It featured new coffee, a office cafeteria and classrooms.

The renovation to the Leonard Auditorium consists of new audio and lighting system.

There will also be two video screens set up at the front of the auditorium.

The varsity gym bleachers are being renovated; the new bleachers are wooden and have handrails to prevent injury. The south end will have less seats to accommadate for the score keeper table.

There will be a platform for filming at the top.

WHAT PHYSICAL CHANGES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE AT HSE? “The B hallway should have more color or carpeting since we can’t make windows. It won’t be as dull.”

HARMFUL EFFECTS NEGATIVE HEALTH TRENDS OF JUULS, IMPACT ON TEEN HEALTH

J

uuls have increased in popularity recently due to the belief that they are a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes.

However, research has shown that this is not the case as juuls are also harmful, lead to many negative effects and contain many harmful chemicals linked to lung disease.

“Due to nicotine and all the metal parts that contribute to lung diseases and other possible effects, juuls are not safer [than cigarettes],” P.E. teacher Anna Wolfe said.

Additionally, teens who use e-cigarettes impact their brain since it does not fully develop until a person is 25. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance, and can impact brain development within adolescents, such as difficulties with learning and memory. Additionally, nicotine also changes the way skills and memories are formed due to the modification of connections built between brain cells.

“Because the teenage brain is not fully developed, the nicotine is being seen as a need in the human brain,” Dean of Students Holly Reine said. “[This is] just like [with] a cocaine or heroin addict.”

Moreover, it also has been linked to long-term behavioral impairments like depression, anxiety and other mood disorders due to the effects chemicals like dopamine have on the brain. E-cigarettes are not just limited to harming the brain, though, as they have been shown to also affect the heart by increasing heart rate and blood pressure. With those increased, it causes the heart to work harder to get blood from oxygen, which also leads to a higher risk of a heart attack and stroke. Furthermore, e-cigarettes are a contributor to impacting the immune system since vaping suppresses hundreds of key immune genes, which harms the immune system even more than smoking.

Additionally, lack of knowledge about vaping has lead to its increase in popularity amongst teenagers. In fact, several of today’s youth believe that vaping is safer than smoking.

According to a study by the Truth Initiative Schroeder Institute,

10 percent of American teenagers believe that Juuls cause no harm, while 62 percent believe they cause little harm or the same harm, compared to cigarettes.

Although Juuls are labeled by many companies as safer than cigarettes, it is just false advertising. Many do not consider the harmful physical effects that they have on the body, as well as the brain. Juuling also affects the physical body by damaging the lungs and causing rapid, shallow breathing.

Along with permanent lung damage, it also puts users at a higher risk of lung disease and lung cancer. Additionally, the lungs of teenagers are not fully developed, which could potentially make them more vulnerable to the chemicals found in e-cigarettes, “There are also now a number of young people in the [intensive care unit] with lung disorders and drug induced comas to heal their bodies due to the effects of juuling/vaping,” Reine said.

In the Midwest, almost two dozen people have been hospitalized due to severe breathing difficulties linked to vaping. In fact, in Aug. 2019 a patient in Illinois died due to a serious lung disease, which was considered the first death in the United States linked to the smoking alternative.

Recently, states and cities have moved towards banning the sale of e-cigarettes. On Sept. 4, 2019 Michigan became the first state to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes. While in early June, San Francisco became the first major city to ban the sale of all e-cigarettes; a ban that will go into effect next year. Story

According to a Johns Hopkins medical report, the U.S. Surgeon General reported that e-cigarette use among high school students increased by 900 percent in 2015.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 8.1 percent of high school students reported smoking cigarettes in 2018.

According to a 2018 Indiana Youth Tobacco Survey, youth vaping had increased by 300 percent since 2014, and is expected to increase.

According to an article written by the Indy Star, a Friday, September 6, death was confirmed to be linked to vaping, This was the first vapingrelated death incident in Indiana.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 20.8 percent of high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2018.

According to a health study conducted by NPR, 6.1 percent of eighth graders had admitted to using an e-cigarette.

INDIANA GOVERNOR VISITED FHS DAY BEFORE FIRST VAPINGRELATED DEATH IN SEPTEMBER Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb spoke at Fishers High School Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, to address teens on vaping and the State’s plan to curb the epidemic. The Governor’s address came one day before the State saw the first vaping-related death on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019, from a “mysterious respiratory illness linked to e-cigarette use”.

MAKING SCHOOL HISTORY BASEBALL TEAM WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP With roaring crowds and blazing lights, 29 boys walked onto Victory Field, competing in front of hundreds of fans from both HSE and Columbus East for the State Championship. Due to stormy weather, the two teams could not compete for two hours. Despite the delay, the boys still had the same intention: to make history.

Both teams walked up to the plate a few minutes before 10 p.m. The first inning of the game included a fierce offense from HSE. HSE Alumn Jack Dewolf hit a single on the first pitch of the game, which was followed by a double from senior Cole DeWael.

The game was tied in the fifth inning when the Olympians scored two. The game remained tight and tense until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Columbus East attempted to turn a double play, but instead threw the ball too wide, the Royals had an opening. Alumn Anthony Eggers was able to advance home and turned the score 3-2. With that, the Royals made school history by becoming the first varsity baseball team to win an IHSAA 4A State Championship.

Junior Jerald Bush played on JV last season and traveled downtown to show his support for his varsity teammates.

“The energy at State was crazy,” Bush said. “Royal nation was behind the team the entire season and we really appreciated it,” Bush said. “We are definitely excited to get back to work this off season and take care of business.”

Throughout the season, the varsity team finished with a record of 23-8, and 10-4 in the HCC. Along with their wins, all the baseball teams hosted an equipment drive to include various items to IPS Schools who were starting baseball programs. Junior Ethan Kaniuk participated in the team’s donation.

“We helped hand out food, clothing and much more that helped support people and their families of our community,” Kaniuk said.

“Working one on one with everyone was a great experience. The people were very thoughtful and had bright personalities.”

Both the JV and varsity teams plan to continue giving back to the community as well as compete for another State title. Story

ANOTHER WIN AT WORLDS

U.S. WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM WINS FOURTH WORLD CUP After a final goal made by Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team was victorious in the eighth Women’s World Cup. After defeating the Netherlands in Décines-Chapieu, France, July 7. The team has inspired many young soccer players around the nation.

“This win inspires me the most because the whole team put so much effort and hard work into the whole tournament,” junior Madison Bellaver said. “It finally paid off for them in the end.”

The varsity girls soccer team has also been impacted by the team’s win.

“This win inspired the varsity team to push ourselves to the limits,” sophmore Ella Wolf said. “It shows us that accomplishing your goals is possible if you work at it.”

The team played in seven overall games throughout the World Cup, and played against countries such as Spain, France and Portugal. Thailand was the team’s first opponent, as the U.S. won 13 to 0. The U.S. competed in the semi-finals against England. Watching the U.S. compete also brought many people together.

“I do feel like I am connected to something bigger because playing soccer allows you to connect,” Bellaver said. “Even watching soccer, you can connect over a single team. This summer the whole nation connected to support the U.S. women’s national team.”

Prior to this season, the U.S. Women’s team has won, the World Cup titles, in the years of 1991, 1999 and 2015. The repeated success of the team allows the women to prove progress and work ethic.

“I think this win proves a lot of things to society,” sophmore Emily Ellis said. “It shows how much the women’s game is growing. It also shows you that you can do anything you put your mind to.”

In support of the team, the crowd shouted “equal pay” when the team won the final game. The chant was in response to the pay gap between the women’s and men’s national teams, which according to a study from Duke University show the women get about 30 percent of what the men’s team makes.

“I feel that the equal pay chant that occured when the US won was well deserved,” Ellis said. “They performed very well in the game and I think no matter what gender, if you do your job and you perform well you should be rewarded for it.”

The women on the team continued the legacy that comes with winning the World Cup, and in four years the next team will face the pressure their past teammates experienced. Ultimately, this victory may not just a win for the team, but a win for the entire country. Story by Lauren Riina.

BRIANNA STRAUS TRAIT: PERSPECTIVE Brianna Straus is a senior on the girls soccer team, who serves as a varsity captain. She plans to attend Otterbein University to continue her soccer career.

“Bri was chosen as one of our captains because she shows grit, works incredibly hard, is respected amongst her team for her abilities, and is a smart player. She shows perspective because she looks into the needs of her teammates and communicates those to our staff to ensure we are all on the same page.”
