Opinion: No One Left Behind

In a school of more than 3,000, it can be easy to feel lost in the abyss of students, whether it be physically as you try to make it through a crowded hallway, or mentally as you place too much focus on a class rank and let that number dictate your opinion of yourself.

I’m definitely guilty of the latter. In a culture so obsessed with intelligence and performance, I’ve often found myself too caught up in a single number that is simply a comparison to my classmates. In reality though, I have come to realize that number won’t matter a year from now, let alone for the rest of my life.

Likewise, if you’re an athlete, you may find yourself constantly immersed in statistics, ranking yourself in comparison to fellow teammates or past alumni. Similarly to class rank, this attitude is one that only sets us up for failure and disappointment, as many of us place our expectations too unreasonably high.

Unfortunately, high school places a strong emphasis on these two groups of students: high-performing academically or athletically and schools often focus much of their energy on these groups, forgetting that these are just a subset of the student body.

While it is important to recognize achievements of students, including academic and athletic ones, it’s just as important to recognize the vast amount of hardworking students who fall somewhere in the middle; those who are not necessarily a top athlete or straight-A student, but who are a necessary part of the student body nonetheless.

So, maybe you aren’t the captain of the football team, and aybe you aren’t in the top 10 percent of your class. But you are a vital part to the success of your school. Here at HSE, each and every Royal is just as important as the next one, regardless of test scores, athleticism or other achievements. The title of ‘Royal’ carries as much weight as anything else and it’s crucial that we remember and enforce this belief day-in and day-out to ensure the success of our students.

Above all else, I want to leave this school knowing I wasn’t left behind. No, my GPA doesn’t break any records, nor am I a star athlete, but I’m determined to end the mindset that these groups are the ony important ones. Each student is an integral part of the Royal family, and it’s time to make that a priority of the school. Column by Laura Stancato

A Letter to the Sports Community

As a four-year varsity athlete for the cross country and track teams, I have had the privilege of representing the Royals at the highest levels of competition. I truly believe I was born to be a competitor, which is why running gives me the opportunity to channel that characteristic of mine. For every success, I’ve experienced even more challenge and defeat through the mind eating thoughts that attacked my mentality, causing me to question the confidence of my ability.

Our school prides itself on our sports community and it is clear that athletics are a tremendous part of who we are; therefore it’s almost impossible to avoid any sort of scores, stats, rankings and results from the week. However, I believe what we don’t talk about enough is the mental health of our athletes that withstand several hours of practice each day, along with competitions and school work.

As a whole, the world of sports tends to value physical health over mental health. It’s important to notice that strength isn’t just a condition of the body; it’s a condition of the mind as well.

Daniel Eisenburg, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, performed a study in which all 31 athletic teams at the university participated. According to the study, 33% of athletes suffered from anxiety, depression or a mental health condition. Only 10% saught self-help. Even more alarming, the NCAA study of student-athlete deaths has concluded that suicide is the third leading cause of death in college level individuals who also participated in their sport during high school.

I was lucky enough to realize that my negative mentality and self-doubt was actually contributing to a downgrade in my physical performance. I became exhausted easily, I began to vomit before every race and I no longer had a spark of excitement for long distance running. Athletics had lead to struggles in my mental health, and it wasn’t until I gained realization that my mentality could rub off on my teammates that I knew I desperately needed to call for help. I needed a shift in perspective.

When I chose to be vulnerable, and I chose to not be part of that 10 percent who resist seeking assistance, I learned about perspectives that my negative mentality didn’t allow me to visualize before. I learned that true success lies within how much joy you find in what you do. I learned that satisfied, accomplished athletes choose to be happy, find value in themselves other than sports, and shift focus from their goals to themselves from time to time. At the end of the day, these are only high school sports.

I do not want the mental health of studentathletes at HSE to go unnoticed. The truth is, there is an existing stereotype that athletes have it all together, but oftentimes there are invisible toxins that plague an athlete’s mentality. The most alarming part, though is that most of us aren’t willing to seek guidance.

While there are many options that can be approached to handle this epidemic, it is crucial that we bring help within the walls of HSE. Studentathletes will be more comfortable and become more persistent in aiding themselves if there is a mental health professional present within the staff of our athletic department. Having accessibility to mental health clinicians in the same place where athletes can receive physical therapy in our trainer’s office will provide more convenience to individuals, as well as avoid pointing them in the direction of a specialist outside of school, where they may get the impression that they are an outsider for needing medical attention.

It’s essential to note that mental health also does not always have to be talked about in a private setting. We need to get students talking about this if we want to bring about change in our sports community. This could include mental health workshops, congregations and bringing in guest speakers open to not only athletes, but the entirety of the school. While mental health can certainly be a personal issue, we need to eliminate the stigma that it would be frowned upon to discuss it in public. You will find that you are far from alone.

If you could take any class, what would it be?

Next Year: Going the Extra MILE New course offers Juniors ability to impact community

reparing a schedule for the next year seems overwhelming and stressful to many students. Sometimes students tend to focus on quickly getting their credits to graduate and take advantage of the vast range of courses offered.

Starting next year, there is a way to get the “best of both worlds.”

Next year, the school will be offering a new program available to juniors that creates a dynamic learning opportunity in which students will work alongside their community members, a program called MILE, or Mindful Immersive Learning Experience. By choosing to take this course, students will earn a total of four credits. These credits will consist of one English Composition credit, one English II credit, two United States History credits, two Science Research credits, and two innovations credits.“The really cool perk from the English side of things is that as Juniors these students will knock out the composition credit needed for graduation,” teacher Kelsey Habig said. “That means in the senior year these students will have total freedom to take any English class they’d like as that composition credit will already be done.”

With a push for more hands-on “Life is more jumbled learning experiences, the school added this course to allow together where we use a students to learn more about range of skills and their community and knowledge to navigate the solutions to problems that the community currently faces and world.” create projects in groups.

“This class is structured less like school and more like life. In school we move bell-to-bell from Math to English to P.E. to Science and so forth, never really mixing the skills together,” Habig said. Life is more jumbled together where we use a rage of skills and knowledge to navigate the world. The MILE class is much more like life.”

Unlike all other courses, the MILE program will be a three hour block.

This will not only give students more time to work, but also a better opportunity to create strong bonds with their peers and instructors.

“The three-hour block is needed for the deep dive.” Habig said. “How many times have you been in class and just really getting into something good when suddenly it’s time to pack up and move on? This window will give us time to really get into deep learning on a regular basis.”

The MILE program will offer unique opportunities and experiences to next year’s junior class.

“Our district wants to lead the way in giving students opportunities,” Habig said. “This class is just the latest in that trend. I expect to see more and more immersive learning as the years progress.” Story by Grace

Lean In English

While using podcasts, various genres of literature and other forms of media, students learn how to become stronger leaders, the importance of self-worth and defying stereotypes. The topics dicussed in this class can also help students apply what they learn in school with society.

In this course, students are able to learn about 12 of the most largely practiced religions around the world through discussions, debates, guest speakers and activities like tai chi and yoga. While findingsimilaritiesanddifferencesbetweenthereligions, students are also broadening their minds.

Back in Time Teachers discuss history of Mr. Royal

Over the years, Mr. Royal has proven to be an event that brings together hundreds of students and their families, in one night where the talents and quirks of senior males are on display to support a good cause. Each year the event raises money for Riley Children’s Hospital and the National Honor Society’s Adopt-a-Family program in a through a series of skits, dances and music.

Although the event has become a celebrated tradition for many students in the spring, Mr. Royal did not start at HSE until 2004, when English teacher Amy Shipley brought the idea from Zionsville High School.

“During the year of 2003-04, I was a sponsor of Student Council and we were looking for a fun fundraising opportunity,” Shipley said. “I proposed it and it’s just taken off from there.”

The traits from Mr. Royal were adapted from a similar showcase at Zionsivlle High School, where Shipley taught previously, with our own twist.

National Honor Society Co-sponsor Jill McGrath is grateful for the event’s success and the opportunity to celebrate the qualities of students. Mr. Royal helps the Riley Dance Marathon by having the senior males carry a bucket around the week to see who can raise the most money as Mr. Riley. Additionally, funds raised at Mr. Royal are also donated to NHS’ Adopt-a-Family, the main fundraiser of the event.

“Because the contestants in Mr. Royal represent such a large cross-section of our school, we are able to use it as a lucrative fundraiser for National Honor Society and Riley Hospital.” McGrath said. “Typically, Mr. Royal is wellattended and feature performances our student population would never have a chance to see through the contestant and outside talent acts.”Story by Sara Vianna and Kersti Hash.

Work Behind the Curtain National Honor Society members plan Mr. Royal

Each member of the costume committee is assigned a contestant and is responsible for helping them find anything they may need for their act and their costume. They also design some parts of the set for the opening dance number. Senior Shiza Noveer signed up because of her interest in being a part of one of the creative sides of the show. While in the committee, she enjoys seeing the impact the costumes have on the actual performance. “My favorite part of Mr. Royal would definitely be the talent that each participant showcases,” Noveer said. “I think it is funny to see them do it on stage and it also provides more information about the boys.”

The prize committee is in charge of talking to different local restaurants and businesses and asking for donations, such as gift cards or coupons, that are awarded to each contestant at the end of the show. Each member is responsible for going to five businesses to contribute to the prizes. “I signed up for the [prize] department because I thought it would be fun to drive around and tell businesses about Mr. Royal as well as ask for donations,” senior Eric Carothers said. “My favorite part of Mr. Royal is the performance because it is very funny and I always have a great time.”

The main responsibility of the publicity committee is to spread the word about the show and encourage people to attend the often sold-out event. The members make posters and flyers to hang around the school, control the social media accounts and create the introduction PowerPoint that plays while the audience gets seated in the Leonard Auditorium. “I personally think the talent portions are hilarious and I love to laugh,” senior Sydney Hurst said. “Additionally, I love the anticipation of the show and putting it together. It is really fun to help contribute to a big production such as this.”

The hospitality committee is in charge of accommodating the judges and all of the students assisting on the days of the dress rehearsal and event. Committee members are responsible for choosing the judges and catered food. Junior Maggie Watson wanted to be a part of the committee in order to be directly involved with Mr. Royal. “I wanted to get a behind the scenes look at the process of putting together the show,” Watson said. “At the end of the day, it’s rewarding to be a part of a great team and put work into a show that a lot of people will enjoy.”

In order for the show to run smoothy, the production committee must put together the songs for the group dance and work backstage to help the contestants. Outside of show time, the committee is responsible for designing the t-shirts, tickets and program covers. Each member sells tickets, develops ideas for the performance and assists contestants with props and costumes during the show. “I was on this committee last year and I had a lot of fun working backstage and getting to see the show evolve from the first rehearsal to the night of the show,” senior Isabella Wilson said. “It was a great hands-on experience so this year I decided it would be fun to head the committee.”

ew Year’s resolutions: a yearly tradition that are often easy to make and hard to follow through with. They have been a staple of New Year celebrations since Babylonian times, a time to reflect on how you can make yourself better for the coming year. This tradition continued on to the Roman times with the Roman mythology and the calendar aligned to January 1 as the New Year. Then it moved to early Christianity where the devout would gather and read scripture. However, now it finally has found its place in the secular world of the modern day as a goal for the people of the world.

Students at Hamilton Southeastern are no different as they find themselves doing the same reflection onto the changes they want to make. Now that doesn’t mean everyone keeps their resolutions in the New Year. It’s a difficult thing to commit to a change in your life and most people find that the main issue.

However, the reward of being able to improve yourself is a very nice idea to many, which is why it seems to be a tradition, nevertheless. Regardless, this is a deeper look into the psychology and the motivations that keep this tradition going year after year. Introduction by Carson Etheredge.

New Year, New Resolutions Students examine benefits of New Year’s resolution As a new year begins, so does the popular trend of making resolutions to attempt to better yourself. The concept of making New Year’s resolutions is not new at all; it has been around for thousands of years. The first known New Year’s resolutions were made by the Babylonians around 4,000 years ago, who would make promises to their gods to keep for the upcoming year.

Additionally, Ancient Romans welcomed January in honor of Janus, the two-faced Roman god who was believed to look both forward and backwards. This belief led Romans to also look back into the previous year and ahead into the new year, much like many around the globe do today.

Presently, the concept of New Year’s resolutions is a mostly secular practice. Rather than making resolutions to a deity like Ancient times, most people make resolutions to improve themselves. Because the new year can seem like a fresh start, many people are inspired and empowered to reinvent themselves with ambitious goals for the year.

“After reflecting on the past year, I can always find something I want to change to make the next year better,” junior Nathalie McLeish said. “I use those things as resolutions for myself to reach in the upcoming year.”

Nearly half of Americans make a New Year’s resolution every year. As wonderful as resolutions for a better year sound, though, they aren’t easy. After even a short period of time, many students realize that holding themselves accountable to their resolutions is often a lot harder than they imagined. New Year’s resolutions seem perfect during the “high” of the start of the year, but eventually, it becomes easier to revert back to old habits.

“To be honest, I’ve never really been good at keeping my resolutions,” McLeish said. “I usually guilt myself into keeping them for the first few weeks but give up after that.”

A majority of people fall into the same routine as McLeish. After seeing a lack of progress with their resolutions, people typically just give up. According to U.S. News, more than 80 percent of Americans’ resolutions are abandoned by the second week of February.

“The hardest part [of following through] was trying to set aside time in my day to fulfill my resolution to read more,” junior Cameron Fowler said. “What made me ultimately give up was missing a couple days and deciding it wasn’t too important to keep going.”

Nevertheless, there are people who actually achieve their goals for a better year. Research from the University of Scranton suggests that 8 percent of Americans keep their New Year’s resolutions. A part of the 8 percent, senior Taylor Pozzebon accomplished her goal of valuing rest and sleeping more. After noticing that she was taking long naps and staying up until 1:00 a.m. every night of first semester, Pozzebon decided that her 2018 New Year’s resolution should be to focus on more quality sleep. As a result, she saw many changes in her everyday routine.

“I started prioritizing homework and doing difficult work earlier in the night instead of putting it off and doing it when I was more tired,” Pozzebon said. “If it got to the point where I was too tired to do well on my homework, I just went to sleep instead.”

In working towards accomplishing her goal, she was able to improve other parts of her life as well. Along with changes in her schedule, her time was spent more effectively and positively.

“Getting more sleep improved not only that aspect of my life but made me more productive at work,” Pozzebon said. “I was also able to do more with my friends without being tired.”

Keeping a resolution can have numerous positive effects, but neuroscientists discovered that being actively engaged in the pursuit of a goal, like a New Year’s resolution, activates pleasure centers in the brain, regardless of the outcome. Even if a person is inconsistent, creating a resolution can have many benefits.

“If you’re looking to make a New Year’s resolution make sure it’s something you really, really want to see change in the upcoming year,” Pozzebon said.

Why Go Vegan?

Veganism has been a topic of interest among teenagers, especially after being named a major dietary food trend of 2018. As it is the opposite of mainstream American culture that consists of things like barbeques and Big Macs, the vegan lifestyle started with a subtle and elusive existence. However, its humble beginnings have risen into a movement adopted and endorsed by several celebrities, athletes, companies and food enthusiasts. These developments have broadened many people’s perspectives on the effects veganism has on animal agriculture, the environment and one’s health.

In general, veganism is the conscious avoidance of animal products in daily living, which include consuming anything with meat, fish, eggs or dairy. Vegans also often avoid animal products used for other purposes, such as authentic leather wallets, wool jackets or any cosmetic products tested on animals.

The overall awareness in veganism has grown within recent years, with a Nielsen survey stating that 40% of consumers in the U.S. are “trying to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diet.”

Additionally, the vegan population in the U.S. increased from 1% in 2014 to 6% in 2017, as shown by information from GlobalData.

“I first became vegan a little over three years ago, after being vegetarian for years prior,” French teacher Nathan Price said. “In general, I feel healthier than I did before and I feel good about my food choices. I don’t get that sleepy feeling after I eat, like I did before either.”

Over the years, veganism has been positively acclaimed by medical professionals and research studies for its beneficial impacts on consumer health, due to its low levels of disease-causing factors and high levels of beneficial nutrients found in different produce. When following a vegan diet, though it is important to ensure that all the necessary recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for each nutrient are fulfilled. Malnutrition may occur when specific nutrients, such as protein, are neglected. Fortunately, vegan substitutes and supplements are available for getting all essential nutrients and having a balanced diet.

“For the past three years, [veganism] has not [damaged my health],” junior Martha Abaddi said. “You just have to know what you’re putting in your body and make sure it benefits your health. It’s not really hard to [manage my diet] unless I am going out to eat, but the internet is pretty resourceful to knowing which products are vegan.”

Regarding ethical and environmental concerns, veganism also helps to support these causes. Waterwise.org states that it takes 9,000 liters of water to produce one pound of beef, while it only requires 60 liters to produce one pound of potatoes or 229 liters for one pound of rice. According to the Vegan Awareness Foundation, being vegan can save 200 animals per year, 1.3 million gallons of water and 1.5 tons of carbon emissions. Due to an inefficient farming process, the amount of food grown for raising livestock outnumbers the amount of meat produced. Deforestation occurs as more land is allocated for this process. The United Nations states that animal agriculture contributes to 14.5% of human-generated greenhouse gas emissions,

and that animal farming has an “enormous impact on water use.”

“I became vegan after learning about the practices of the animal industry just so we could eat meat, dairy, or eggs, all non-essential foods,” senior Marina Cridge. “As a 10 year old, I knew that you were supposed to be nice to all animals, whether that be your pet dog or a pig or chicken [and] I made the connection that buying animal products contributed to inhumane practices and it made me feel guilty and selfish.”

Several options are available for those interested in the vegan lifestyle. From online recipes to new restaurant choices, the possibilities are endless. It is the inspired pursuit, proper awareness, and genuine interest that matter in getting the best out of veganism for oneself and for the world. Vegan-Friendly Franchises Café Patachou

Mellow Mushroom

Café Patachou is a restaurant located in Carmel, Keystone and Indianapolis that labels its menu with a green ‘V’ next to any meals that are vegan. Some of the options include avocado multigrain toast, cauliflower fried rice, vegan cuban breakfast and vegan omelette.

Mellow Mushroom is a pizza chain that labels its menu with a ‘V’ next to meals that are lacto-ovo vegetarian. Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat meat or fish, but allow themselves to eat eggs and dairy products. Most of the lacto-ovo vegetarian meals can be altered to be vegan friendly too. Some of the vegetarian options include Magic Mushroom soup, Enlightened spinach salad, Veg Out and Great White speciality pizzas.

Vegan Celebrities

Liam Hemsworth Hemsworth became vegan in 2015 after thinking about his group of vegan friends. He has also convinced other celebrities, such as his brother Chris Hemsworth, to become vegan and believes that becoming vegan doesn’t weaken men but makes them healthier and stronger.

Alicia Silverstone Silverstone became vegan when she turned 21 in 1997 ater people educated her on the benefits of adopting a vegan lifestyle and diet.

Additionally, she wrote a book called “The Kind Diet” in 2009 that is filled with vegan recipes.

Woody Harrelson Harrelson has been vegan for 33 years and is a raw food advocate and an outspoken environmentalist.

Naturally, he gave up dairy first due to his lactose intolerance.

In Love with the Game Junior Sydney Parrish narrows college list Royal blue fills the bleachers, the gym floor sparkles and the sounds of shoes squeaking and fans cheering fills the gymnasium as junior Sydney Parrish steps onto the court. Parrish, who started playing basketball when she was 5 years old decided to play the sport after growing up in a family where both parents played collegiate basketball.

“Basketball is important to me because it has brought me my best friends,” Parrish said. “[It has also given me the opportunity to travel] to places I’ve never been before.”

Among Parrish’s achievements, she is currently ranked eleventh nationally in the class of 2020 for girls basketball players and has participated with Team USA. Parrish also became the sixth player in school history to break 1,000 points and is also a candidate for the 2020 Indiana Miss Basketball Award.

“I have been lucky enough to participate with the USA team four times,” Parrish said. “The best experience I’ve had with basketball is being able to have the opportunity to be invited to the Olympic training center and getting to be surrounded by Olympic and Paralympic athletes of all stars.”

Over the years, though, Parrish has experienced

several obstacles, which include last season’s Mudsock game when she broke her nose, suffered a concussion and received four stitches in her lip. The injuries sidelined Parrish for two months, but that did not prevent her from working to return to the court.

“I overcame [my injury] with many trips to the doctor [and] stayed positive throughout the recovery process by surrounding myself with my teammates,” Parrish said.

At the start of her recruitment, Parrish received 41 scholarships offers from varrious universites, but recently narrowed her list to seven, including Indiana University, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Iowa, University of Maryland, University of Oregon, University of South Carolina and University of Tennessee which are all ranked in the top 25.

“It has been a long journey [but] the recruitment process has been nothing but amazing,” Parrish said.

“I can’t wait to make stronger relationships with the coaches and have my final decision made later this year.”

After years of hard work, Parrish has turned basketball into a lifestyle that she is excited to continue after high school. Story by Lilyan Wray.

Trait: Work Ethic Bostock is a senior on the boys swimming and diving team. He will attend the Navel Academy next fall.

“Nick isconsistently one of our hardest workers on the team and what we really love about Nick is that he’s always asking questions [and] he wants to get better.

He’s really hungry to improve. I would say he challenges us as coaches to be better coaches because he’s so nitpicky with certain things that it really makes us think.

2019 Many see a new year as a fresh start. The arrival of 2019 prompted millions of people across the globe to come up with New Year’s resolutions that they feel will better or bring progress to their lives. The year begins with optimism that the resolution can be kept all the way through December.

While coming up with a resolution is not a daunting task, going through with resolutions is a much greater challenge.

Resolutions that are hard to fulfill are easily abandoned and others may be forgotten as time goes on.
