Senior Jack Huybers overcomes disability by powerlifting

In 2016, more than 13,000 athletes competed in Indiana Special Olympic sports across 76 counties, with the number growing each year. Senior Jack Huybers, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth, has an athletic journey very unlike the typical star basketball player.

However, what one may perceive as a disability has given him the ability to achieve things he never could imagine himself accomplishing.

Cerebral Palsy, the condition Huybers battles every day, affects the mobility of the muscles in his legs and hands. Since the age of three, he has relied on a wheelchair to get around, but that didn’t stop him from living a normal life and playing sports.

Huybers played soccer throughout his youth and discovered powerlifting two years ago when his mother found the Indiana Special Olympics online.

At first, he was hesitant to sign up in fear that his wheelchair may restrict him from the sport. Self-belief, support and the willingness to step outside his comfort zone led Huybers to pursue his passion - powerlifting.

“My mom had to push me to get into [powerlifting],” Huybers said.

“It was just an obstacle getting past

the initial point of saying ‘Oh, I’m not sure about this’ to myself. It has become something I really enjoy, and I’m just very grateful for it because it gives me an opportunity to exercise which I really didn’t have before I started.”

Powerlifting consists of three separate events: squat, deadlift and bench press. Since squat and deadlifting require standing, Huybers competes in the bench press portion of the sport. The gym he trains at three times per week had never dealt with an athlete in a wheelchair but they were willing to take a chance and find ways to accommodate his abilities. Instead of using a traditional bench, Huybers’ wheelchair was designed to fully recline to allow him to lift without getting out of it.

“Believe me, I’m not perfect at this but it’s taught me that you have to push yourself past your comfort zone and be okay with being uncomfortable,” Huybers said. “There are still many days where I’ll be tired. My coaches will push me to keep going forward.”

Huybers has now competed in two summer Special Olympic Games and earned a personal record at the 2016 games. Previously, he was able

to lift 65 pounds, but his coaches entered him to lift 80 pounds without telling Huybers they were raising the weight. Accomplishing something he did not think he was capable of not only helped him gain confidence when powerlifting, but also taught him a valuable lesson.

“I didn’t even know I lifted a personal best,” Huybers said. “Competing gives me the confidence to know I’m bettering myself and pushing myself outside my comfort zone, especially physically. It reminds you [that] you can do anything you set your mind to.”

Although Huybers’ Cerebral Palsy has challenged him throughout his life, powerlifting has given him an opportunity to test his abilities and exceed his own expectations of himself.

“There are definitely times where I let my [disability] get in the way, but I try to look on the positive side,” Huybers said. “It can be hard when you don’t want to do something initially, like powerlifting. Once you get past that it gets easier. Now I think of it as more of a positive experience.” Story by Olivia Smith and Laurel Black.

A Common Goal Athletes discuss pros and cons of IHSAA, Varsity, and Club sports Students often rally and show Royal pride at school sporting events such as football and basketball.

However, sports and athletic teams recognized as clubs do not always get as much attention from students when it comes to support.

Several athletic teams at HSE are not considered Indiana High School Athletic Association sports, rather club sports. Sports like rugby, bowling, hockey, dance and boys volleyball are categorized as clubs, while lacrosse is a varsity sport but not an IHSAA sport. “[IHSAA recognition] comes down to popularity among high school students across our state,” IHSAA Sports Information Director Jason Wille said. “IHSAA by-laws state that 50% of the IHSAA membership must offer a program within their school in order for the IHSAA Executive Committee to consider sponsoring the sport and offering a state tournament.”

Club sports do not receive funding from the school, which typically requires athletes to pay more in order to participate and also creates stricter traveling and competition guidelines.

“Indiana High School Dance Team Association restricts [The Fishers Fusion Dance team] from competing as an unsponsored high school team in Indiana,” freshman Hailey Howard said. “[Therefore] we have to travel far away to participate in invitationals or events sponsored by national associations.”

While a petition Howard created in support of dance becoming an IHSAA sport is slowly gaining attention from fellow dancers and students, Howard hopes it will make a difference in the future seasons.

“I think a petition will actually help [the dance team become recognized],” Howard said. “I hope we get on the athletics website and gradually work our way up to getting letterman jackets and varsity letters.”

Although being a club sport has its disadvantages, it can also be accompanied by many advantages, specifically for rugby players. Members of the HSE rugby team have fewer restrictions to follow, which includes allowing athletes to drive separately to away games and more leniency with coaching.

“The main drawback to rugby being a club sport is that we receive no funding from the school,” senior Benjamin Rhodes said. “However, I enjoy it because the coaches are [able to be] more relaxed and casual.”

One sport that transitioned from being recognized as a club is boys lacrosse, which became a varsity sport during the 2016-17 school year.

Although the team gained further recognition and support from the school, it is governed by the Indiana High School Lacrosse Association, which follows a different set of guidelines than the IHSAA. “I do not really notice any drawbacks about lacrosse only being a varsity sport,” senior Peter Buckner said. “[However], being a varsity sport makes other teams unable to compete against us, which can be inconvenient.”

While discerning between the different types of sports can be difficult, each have their own merits and deserve the same support as their varsity peers. Story by Evelyn Eggers, Jennifer Turock and Andrea Bautista.

Why Is Gymnastics Not A School Sport?

School offers a wide array of sports through all three seasons. However, despite there being places nearby that offer gymnastics recreationally, such as Deveau’s, HSE does not offer the IHSAA sport of gymnastics for students to compete at the high school level.

Although gymnastics is not an IHSAA sport at HSE, it is in other nearby schools.

Noblesville High School has an IHSAA gymnastics team, where Jody Kiovsky is the head coach.

“It is a varsity sport just as any other sanctioned Indiana high school sport would be,” Kiovsky said. “I would say we have less than 100 who now show up to our competitions.”

Kiovsky also played on the team back when it was formed, which has now been around for almost 40 years.

“We have 11 competing gymnasts, three managers, and five coaches.” Kiovsky stated. HSE has never had a gymnastics team, at least in the mind of James Self, the athletic director. He describes a reason for why.

“There’s not many participants, for starters,” Self said. “And there’s not many schools who would have enough people who want to do [gymnastics] that the schools could show genuine interest.” Story by

Jim White shares experiences from military

Jim White wanted to be a doctor. In fact, he never knew he’d fly airplanes, let alone Air Force Two. White, who served as the director of transportation for Hamilton Southeastern Schools had joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Though he studied biology in college, with hopes of becoming a doctor. Little did he know where his career path would eventually take him.

“Back then, there was a draft for the armed services, and I had a low lottery number, so I was going to end up getting drafted into the army before I could get into [medical] school,” White said. “I thought that if I was going to go into [the army], then I might as well do something I really wanted to do, so I decided to seek out the Air Force.”

In the 1970s, towards the end of the Vietnam War, White joined the Air Force, where he flew jet transports across the world.

“I flew all over the Pacific,” White said. “I flew worldwide, for that matter. I did it for six years and then I got out of the Air Force for a while and flew commercially for a commercial airliner, but they laid a lot of people off. When I got laid off, I decided to go back into the Air Force.”

After joining the Air Force for the second time, White served for four years, before applying, and eventually being accepted, at the Presidential Support Wing.

“I had a sponsor that was already [in the Presidential Support Wing], and he was helping me get in from that angle,” White said. “They looked at my flying record and the fact that I was an instructor, and a flight examiner for another airplane was a must, so I got into that operation and was there for about six years or so during the Bush Administration.”

White flew President George H. W. Bush consistently during his presidential campaign. Once Bush was

elected, White began flying Air Force Two. “[President Bush] had his own pilot who did nothing but fly Air Force One, but the rest of us did Air Force Two, as well as flying foreign dignitaries, members of Congress, the First Ladies and people like that,” White said. “I did fly the Air Force Two during the presidential campaign. The airplane I flew was a DC-9, so it was smaller than [Air Force One], and there were a lot of places [Air Force One] couldn’t get into, so they’d use the airplane I was on.”

After flying for the President Support Wing, White went to one of the headquarters for the Air Force and became the director of nuclear airlift.

“I was responsible for moving nuclear weapons around the world,” White said. “We would bring them from wherever it is they were positioned, and back to the United States to the depot where they have upgrades done or normal maintenance. We’d take all the Army’s tactical weapons out of the Pacific and out of Europe.”

After 20 years, White retired from the Air Force and moved back to Indiana, where he and his wife wanted to live a quiet, slower-paced lifestyle. After taking a job at Purdue, White applied for the transportation director job.

“There’s a lot of carryover,” White said. “When you’re talking about airplanes, buses, ships, whatever the mode of transportation, safety is paramount.”

White felt that his job as transportation director was a natural fit, but still had to learn and gain knowledge as the job progressed.

“It’s just been a pleasure and a privilege to work with Hamilton Southeastern. I’m really fortunate to have been able to do that, but now it’s time to move on and do something else with my life.” Story by MacKenzie Barclay. Photos contributed by Jim White.

OPINION: School Board Needs a Student Union

A student’s opinion on the recent calendar discussion, changes

An emergency board meeting was held on Nov. 20 2017 which covered the most recent issues on the new district calendar. While meetings on such happen almost every year, a survey was sent out to teachers, parents, students and the community only for the board to come back with a completely different calendar than what was preferred by the students, teachers, parents, and the community.

This brings up room for question.

The school board is made up of seven members who are elected by the community every four years. There is also a teacher’s association who is represented by one teacher who speaks on behalf of the teachers and their best interest. However, there is no one or no committee to represent the input of the students.

“Under state law, teachers have to be involved in the discussion process,” Janet Chandler, Hamilton Southeastern Education Associate President said. “We don’t have to get our way but, they have to discuss it with us and there is no state law that way that protects students.”

Several board members were disappointed with the little response students had to the survey, while survey was sent to students via email, students received a Skyward alert but many students had no idea about the survey due to students not checking their student email account and many students do not get Skyward alerts.

One possible solution is to advertise surveys when giving students a chance to give their opinion to a change that affects them. Another solution is to have a student committee or a student representative who attends board meetings and gives their opinion on what is best for the student body.

“I’m open to it, but not certain what purpose you have in mind. I personally find it difficult to accurately speak on behalf of another person or large group as opinions can vary greatly.” School Board President Matt Burke said. “We as a board try to be careful not to speak on behalf of the other board members more than necessary. In fact, the first words of wisdom I learned when I joined the board was to always remind myself and others that I am just one of seven board members, so my opinion/desire is not relevant until it is in concert with the majority of the others.”

So, will we see a change?

Students should get a say on decisions the school board is making that directly impacts the student body whether it be a student committee or representative or informing student better when they are given an opportunity to give their input on a situation, but also we need to let our voice be heard. Students share their experences with upcycling clothing

Widely known as one of the largest nonprofit donation organizations, Goodwill has been a source of cheap, functional items since its creation in 1902.

Originally started by Reverend Edgar J. Helms, it was used as both a location for the impoverished to find useful goods for a low price, and to help the unemployed get valuable work experience. To this day, similar organizations have assisted many families in need by providing jobs and products. Now however, a rising trend has come along, which is changing the way many view Goodwill: upcycling.

Described as using old, cheap products, usually clothes, to create a newer more useful item; upcycling has been seen across all media outlets, Pinterest to YouTube. This kind of media attention has created a trend, encouraging other people to try their hand at it, as well. While some may think this defeats the original purpose of Goodwill, junior Trent Williams, an employee at Goodwill, sees it differently.

“I feel like if someone is buying [clothing] to change it up or make it look nicer then it is different,” Williams said. “It is almost an art form at that point.”

Students like junior Sophie Sams decided to start shopping at Goodwill to save money and to potentially find clothing not found anywhere else. Once she began shopping there, she also began upcycling the clothing she found.

“A lot of the time [for me] it’s buying clothes that are bigger [sizes] and then cutting it or tying it in a knot,” Sams said. “ It’s a good thrift shopping alternative [because] you’ll find a lot of unique clothes. You won’t find anyone else wearing what you’re wearing.”

However, some students shop at Goodwill not only for the lower prices and unique clothing, but because it does not support fast fashion which emphasizes making fashion trends cheaply and quickly available to consumers. While also producing the clothing in mass quantities in other countries paying workers unfairly low wages. This is a big problem for sophomore Martha Abbadi.

“I try not to get any clothing from big brand companies like H&M or Forever 21,”Abbadi said. “It also has to do with materialism and how much value you put in material items. I love clothes but I don’t find enough

value in it to support fast fashion.”

Retail companies are attempting to keep up with the changing fashion trends, but the trends are beginning to change more quickly, sometimes in just a week. Some speculate that this is due in part to social media and the constant coverage of what celebrities and other fashion forward individuals are wearing. Because of how quickly people change their styles, this fast paced industry is also becoming detrimental to the environment. Clothing has become available in higher quantities at lower costs resulting in people throwing their old clothes out. As a result, billions of pounds of clothing is tossed into landfills a year. Some companies, however, have begun to educate their buyers on the benefits of ethically locallysourced clothing as opposed to larger quantities for less money.

The recent trend of upcycling has been an opportunity to work against fast fashion according to Abbadi. She began upcycling the clothes she bought there to better fit her style. The low prices inspire her to experiment with her clothing as she believes even if they don’t turn out how she wanted or previously envisioned, it was not too large an investment.

“It [Upcycling] opens a lot more room for creativity,” Abaddi said. “It’s more fun and the clothes you put on you reflect who you are.”

Upcycling has been a tool used by many people who wish to make a statement in fashion but not break the bank. While Goodwill’s original purpose was to be a space for cheap thrifting story continues on next page...

A: I have been working there since Nov. 9th so about 2 months. I work in the donation center area which is connected to the actual store.

Q: Why did you start working there?

A: I started working there because I needed to start making money to support my family, friends and myself Q: What is the weirdest donantion you have received?

A: Someone tried to donate a giant box of chemicals and we had to remove them to avoid a nuclear disaster at Goodwill.

Q: What advice would you give someone who was shopping there?

A: I would tell people to remember that it is Goodwill so you should be mindful that everything you see there might not be top quality items.

out of necessity, some people have turned it into a successful hobby. One student, who aspires to have a future career in fashion design, is often seen in the aisles of Goodwill searching for potential projects. Sophomore Adam Harper did not begin his love for Goodwill with a desire to create new clothes, but rather to find high-end, brand name clothes for a bargain. “[My interest] started when I wanted to wear big name brands but I didn’t want to spend $100 on a t-shirt,” Harper said. “I started shopping at Goodwill last summer not out of necessity, but out of a desire for cooler clothes.”

Harper follows mainstream trends quite frequently, often gaining fashion inspiration from big brands such as Thrasher, Ralph Lauren and Nautica along with up-andcoming musical artists, particularly in the rap genre.

Although he follows these trends, he doesn’t want to “fit in” whether it be how he dresses himself or how he designs clothing brand.

“I am very big on being diverse,” Harper said. “I love seeing a lot of different things like brightly colored pants for guys.”

For some, upcycling is just a simple hobby in order to make clothes unique to just themselves, but for Harper, it will be a tool in creating his own clothing line in the future. Although the selection Goodwill offers is not often seen as a “mainstream” style, Harper sees it as a pathway to a more creative, and hopefully one day profitable, design.

“I don’t have the money to use expensive designer clothes [in my projects],” Harper said. “Stores like Goodwill make great contributions to the way I make pieces and prototypes that I would otherwise be unable to make.”

These students come from different backgrounds and all have different reasons that they choose to upcycle.

From advocating against big brand fast fashion and clothing waste, to striving to become a successful fashion designer, each student that partakes in the rising trend leaves their mark through their creativity. Upcycling has become a diverse and creative trend, allowing any individual, such as HSE students, to express themselves in their own way and in doing so, they open doors to a new kind of mainstream. Creating Lasting Change City of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness discusses the future of Fishers In recent months, residents of Fishers have likely noticed that new companies, restaurants and entertainment areas have sprouted across downtown Fishers.

Despite all of the growth Fishers has already seen in the past few years, changes are expected into 2018 and beyond, including restaurants and advancements for entrepreneurs. “[Recently] St. Elmo’s announced that they’re coming to Fishers, which would be one of the first of what could be eight to ten restaurants,” City of Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness said. “You’ll also see us cut our ribbon on our Internet of Things Lab, as well as more development in downtown Fishers and hopefully some more corporate office builds.”

Plans are also still in place for the 70-acre Geist park that would become the largest park in Fishers and could contain a public beach, biking trails, observation tower and a fishing pier.

“We’re still in negotiation with a landowner to come to an agreement on price and we’re moving through the process as needed,” Mayor Fadness said. “ We have every intent to secure that property and have it as a part of our parks system.”

Mayor Fadness hopes that these changes and advancements will benefit the city economically, but more importantly create an environment that citizens and outsiders are excited about.

“As cliché as it may sound, we strive to create a smart, vibrant and entrepreneurial environment in our city,” Mayor Fadness said. “I think we’re trying to position Fishers in a way that allows it to take advantage of the economy, as well as the new trends of science and technology and culture.”

The goal that city officials had for the city involved working to make Fishers a city that people not only enjoy living in today, but can see themselves living in for the duration of their lives, striving to create a city with a future that is not depreciating, but exponentially becoming more vibrant. “[These] developments all play into when you’re 30 and trying to decide where you’re going to live for the next twenty years,” Mayor Fadness said. “People will look back and the city will have substantially changed. But in 20 years I think they’ll agree that change was for the better.” Story by Makenna Sisemore.

New Year, New Jobs

Students get jobs at new local establishments New additions to 116th Street brings brand new jobs. More specifically, a little more than 950 jobs. With the increased hiring opportunities, teenagers across Fishers are eager to get jobs at these new places.

Of these three popular chains, Portillo’s was the first to open. The restaurant is known for their hot dogs, milkshakes and Italian beef. Portillo’s is popular in our neighbor state, Illinois. At TopGolf, the next to open, guests are taken to a bay and get to swing freely within the nets surrounding the venue. Guests are accompanied with a server to order off their menu. They also have an attached restaurant and bar.

The last to open in the newly developed are around Fishers was IKEA, a Scandinavian chain store with ready to assemble furniture. Residents used to have to drive all the way to Ohio to get to the nearest IKEA, now we have one right down the street.

Senior Matt Hazen, currently employed at Portillo’s, is a training administrator, as the restaurant has new employees he goes through orientation classes. He impulsively quit his job at Olive Garden when he saw on the news that Portillo’s was about to open and decided to check it out.

“Business since we opened a few months ago has been extremely busy. The line still reaches out the door on some weekends,” Hazen said. “There was a lot of media attention and hype surrounding our grand opening which I think played a big part.”

Senior Naudia Donald, who works at TopGolf, busses tables and runs food, as the position name, “support,” with the company. The line at TopGolf has been out the door since the opening. Donald enjoys the enthusiasm that the atmosphere of TopGolf brings.

“It is pretty exciting working at a new establishment,” Donald said. “I am exposed to a lot of people who live here in Indiana that come to TopGolf to enjoy themselves.”

Senior Jordan Webber works in the food court at the new IKEA. She decided to work because they pay well and she wanted the excitement of working in a new place.

“It’s very nice working at a new establishment,” Webber said. “Everybody is learning together, so when you make a mistake nobody gets that mad because nobody really knows what they are doing.” Story by Christina Poetz.

A look at America one year after Presidential inaguration Throughout his 2016 presidential campaign, then-candidate Donald Trump promised to change many aspects of American life and politics. Some claims have been completed, but others have been left behind or are currently being developed as President Trump begins his first term in office.

A focal point of President Trump’s campaign was to build a wall along the southern border of the U.S. in an attempt to decrease the number of undocumented immigrants entering the country from Mexico. Contractors recently broke ground in San Diego, Calif., where eight prototypes of the border wall underwent the beginning stages of construction. Junior Michael Ruddell supports this effort for stronger immigration regulations.

“Since [Trump’s] presidency, [according to Dailywire.com] fewer illegal border crossings have occurred,” junior Michael Ruddell said. “I believe anyone has the right to be in this country, but they must do it legally.”

Additionally, President Trump also promised supporters that Mexico would pay for the wall. However, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto firmly denied this claim during an exchange with President Trump.

Sophomore Yashavi Phougat immigrated to the U.S. from India and maintains a close watch on any changes in America’s immigration policy.

“As an immigrant, I’ve also paid close attention to Trump’s immigration policy,” Phougat said. “I think his rhetoric has continued to be dangerous and incites an ‘us versus them’ attitude, which is not helping our already divided country.”

Along with the construction of his prototype border walls, President Trump revealed a final rewrite of his new tax plan on Dec. 13, stirring up controversy amongst the Democratic and Republican Parties. This bill would cut the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 21 percent in 2018, creating seven tax brackets. The plan will cut income tax rates, double the standard deduction and eliminate personal exemptions. “[President] Trump’s new tax plan is great,” junior Logan Carnahan said. “It’s his biggest legislative victory so far and people love it.”

Another action President Trump completed thus far is the selection and approval of a new Supreme Court justice. Neil Gorsuch was nominated on Jan. 31. and succeeded Justice Antonin Scalia, appointed by Ronald Reagan in 1986. Gorsuch is not only committed to Constitutional originalism, but also to textualism, the notion of adhering to the objective meaning of the legal text. Gorsuch is also known to act as a large advocate for religious liberties.

“Gorsuch’s biases are not extremely present in his questioning, which I find can be difficult for many justices,”senior Lucy Newell said. “I do not agree with many of his decisions, but I think he is doing a good job.”

Aside from new people and new views in office, President Trump has yet to fulfill all of his campaign promises. Throughout his campaign, President Trump made a promise to repeal Obamacare. This has yet to occur, as the Senate did not vote in favor of the bill to repeal Obamacare. One year following the inauguration, President Trump continues to set plans in motion, with time remaining in his term to fulfill his promises. While some may argue thrift shops are only for cheap, over-used goods, students can be found sifting through the aisles, trying to find clothing items with potential. Some hunt for bargains on big-name brands, while others search for clothes to which they can add their own personal touch.

The process of taking the thrift shop finds and making them unique is most commonly referred to as upcycling.

Students who upcycle find satisfaction in taking something common and turning it into something individualistic.

Students Martha Abbadi, Adam Harper and Sophia Sams had their individual reasons to upcycle, in which they were able to discover their own style in thrift stores such as Goodwill.

Whether the students were hunting for new fashion inspiration, a fresh find or worked to avoid fast fashion big businesses, upcycling helped students create a style that they could call their own.

This issue of the Orb dives into why these students upcycle and their fashion inspiration as well as some of their favorite creations from thirfting. Story by Hayden Sisemore.
