Giving Hope
Help Spread Cheer This Holiday Season Giving Hope, the City of Fremont’s Human Services Department’s holiday giving program, supports our low-income clients by helping to fulfill their Christmas wish lists. There are two ways to participate: Be a sponsor and shop for items from a personalized wish list for a family or a senior who needs extra support to make the holidays special. Wish lists can include clothing, toys, groceries, transportation vouchers and more. Sponsors are asked to spend a minimum of $100 per person. If you wish to sponsor a family, contact Jane at 510.574.2026 or johollaren@fremont.gov. To sponsor a senior or senior with a pet, contact Monica at 510.574.2057 or mdominguez@fremont.gov. If you’re not a shopper, you can still help by donating money to the Giving Hope program. Financial contributions are used to buy gifts for families and seniors who are not matched with a sponsor. After the holidays, remaining donations are added to the department’s Urgent Needs Fund. These flexible dollars allow us to help with critical client needs throughout the year that may not be covered under governmental program guidelines. 2020 Census Around the Corner Our Community Counts! The City of Fremont is working to ensure that we fully count our Tri-City community. Nearly 26% of Alameda County residents are considered “Hard-toCount” and face barriers to census completion, including foreign-born residents, immigrants, people of color, seniors, young children, and people with disabilities. Census 2020 presents increased danger for an undercount, as it will be the first digital census and increased stigma of fear that the Federal government will use Census data to target people, particularly regarding citizenship. For every person not counted, our community loses ~$1,000 in funding per year for ten years. Census 2020 will not ask about citizenship status or private information like a social security number. Census responses are confidential and there are very strong laws protecting census data. Since 2001, Lincoln Kinship offers free services to kinship families in which a child 18 years and younger is being raised by his or her relatives. The goal of the Kinship Program is to keep children with their families by providing support services to grandparents and other relatives who are raising another family member’s children when the parents are absent and/or unable to care for them. Children do best when they remain in the safe, stable and familiar environment that relatives can provide. Lincoln provides case management, youth services, respite care, family events, support groups and workshops to over 300 kinship families throughout the Hayward, Tri-City and Tri-Valley areas spanning 11 cities. The purpose is to support the growing number of kinship caregivers by assisting them in providing a healthy and stable environment. The Winter Shelter for the Tri-City homeless community will be open 7 nights a week through mid-March offering food, showers and a sleeping bag/cot, plus housing assessments and limited health services during the week. The shelter location will rotate between the Fremont Senior Center and the Fremont Teen Center and space is limited. Do you need childcare for just a few hours or a backup when your regular provider is out sick? Would holiday shopping be easier without the kids? The FRC operates a drop-in, hourly childcare service for well children and it’s open to the public. At Discovery Cove, kids can participate in arts and crafts with caring adults for up to 12 hours a week. Call for reservations. ACCESS provides information, screening and referrals for Alameda County residents who need mental health and/or drug and alcohol treatment. ACCESS is answered by County licensed mental health clinicians Monday-Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm. After hours calls are returned by Alameda County Crisis Support Services. The telephone menu is in six languages: English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, and Cambodian. ACCESS uses a telephone interpretation service for additional languages and California Relay for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. An Alameda County Behavioral Health program.

Tax season is coming and SparkPoint Fremont is here to help! If your annual household income is $56,000 or less, we can do your taxes for free through our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) January 22—April 15, 2020. Our IRS-certified tax preparers will have offices in Fremont, Union City and Newark. Locations and hours will be posted on our website www.fremontvita.org after January 15.
