Falls can be a serious risk for older adults, but there are simple steps that can help prevent them and keep you safe. Here are some easy tips to help avoid falls.
1. Keep Your Home Safe: Remove clutter, clear pathways of any objects you might trip over, like cords, books, or toys, use non-slip mats, and secure your rugs.
2. Improve Lighting: Use brighter light bulbs in hallways and stairways and use nightlights.
3. Wear Proper Footwear: Choose supportive shoes. Wear shoes with non-slip soles and avoid walking around in socks or slippers that can slide.
4. Stay Active: Exercise regularly and choose exercises that improve balance and strength, such as walking, Tai Chi, or strength training. Always check with your doctor for exercises that are safe and effective for you.
5. Review Medications: Check side effects. Review your medications with your doctor to adjust dosages or find alternatives if needed.
6. Use Assistive Devices: Always hold grab bars and railings in bathrooms and stairs. Use a cane or walker if recommended by your doctor to help with balance and stability.
7. Get Regular Check-Ups: Have your vision and hearing checked regularly. Poor eyesight and hearing can increase fall risk. Check your bone health and ensure it is monitored to prevent issues like osteoporosis that can contribute to falls. By following these simple tips, you can create a safer environment and reduce the risk of falls. Stay active, stay safe, and remember that small changes can make a big difference!
