Home Repairs by Habitat for Humanity Help Homeowners Stay in their Homes

For too many homeowners in our community, particularly older adults, home maintenance needs can climb beyond their financial means. Often, older homeowners find themselves living with uncomfortable or unsafe conditions, or even facing displacement altogether.

Luckily, Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley offers two programs in Fremont that make home repairs affordable – or even free – for those homeowners who qualify. In partnership with the City of Fremont, Habitat East Bay/Silicon Valley offers grants for home repairs to income-qualified owneroccupants of single-family homes, condos, townhomes, and mobile homes. Habitat also administers the Renew Alameda County program, offering 1% interest nopayment loans for repairs.

Through these programs, Fremont homeowners with limited incomes have accessed repairs on everything from roofs to flooring, electrical to plumbing, bathroom grab bars to fresh coats of paint.

These programs are made possible through a combination of resources, including partnership with the City, local voter initiatives like Measure A1 bond funds, CalHome funding from the state, and the generosity of community supporters.

Homeowners interested in affordable home repairs through Habitat can visit: www.habitatebsv.org/ services/home-repair/fremont, email HomeRepair@HabitatEBSV.org or call 510-803-3388.

FAMILY CAREGIVERS SUPPORT PROGRAM

Family caregivers are the backbone support for those facing health challenges, age-related issues, or disabilities. They often prioritize their loved ones’ needs over their own, enduring significant emotional and physical strain. Fortunately, the City of Fremont’s Human Services Department offers various resources to alleviate this burden. The Family Caregiver Support Program provides emotional support through counseling, support groups, education, and connections to community resources. Family caregivers are encouraged to call the Family Caregiver Support program at 510-574-2035 to get connected with services.

Maintaining Driving Safety as We Age

As we age, our bodies undergo changes in our vision, hearing, muscle strength, flexibility, re-flexes, and cognitive abilities. Although age-related changes don’t necessarily make us un-safe drivers, understanding them and how they affect our abilities allows us to take steps to maintain our driving safety. Simple steps include:

• Getting a yearly vision test

• Talking to your doctor about changes in your health or medications

• Engaging in regular physical activity

• Refreshing your driving skills through the online AARP Smart Driver Course (https://www.aarp.org/auto/driver-safety/)

Research shows that older adults outlive their driving ability by 7-10 years. Be prepared and plan for your driving retirement! Ride-On Tri-City! helps connect older adults to alternative transportation resources, including:

• Free travel training to learn how to use transit.

• Subsidized rides within the Tri-City area for those who are disabled or over 70 years of age.
