AGING IN PLACE COMMUNITY

More than likely, you have heard the term ‘Aging in Place’, which refers to adapting homes so people can stay in them as they get older. That is a wonderful goal, but it is not enough. In Fremont we strive for ‘Aging in Community’, which promotes a broader, community-focused vision of aging. We are fortunate to live in an area where people care about each other and are engaged in creating an Age-Friendly environment.

To support the evolving needs and interests of our residents, the Human Services Department is requesting your input. What is your vision of Aging in Community?

Below are some areas the City is interested in hearing about:

• Housing

• Transportation

• Opportunities for social participation

• Outdoor spaces

• Health and wellness

Please take a few minutes and complete the Age-Friendly survey on www.my.fremont.gov/agefriendlyfremont

If you are interested in engaging in the community, the Age Friendly Fremont newsletter is full of opportunities. To subscribe to Age Friendly Fremont go to https://bit.ly/SU3HIzOFl, e-mail agewellcenters@fremont.gov or call the Age Well Centers at 510-790-6600 and 510-742-7540.

The City of Fremont’s Senior Peer Counseling program is a good example of an Aging in Community focused program. It provides emotional support to older adults living in the Tri-City area. Peer Counselors are expected to attend a 36-hour comprehensive training program before they start, along with on-going weekly support sessions. Many older clients find it helpful to receive emotional support concerning life transitions from someone with similar life experiences. All sessions are held in a safe and confidential space.

Senior peer counselors report feeling rewarded by giving their time to others and to their community. Below are some comments from the program’s counselors:

“After my retirement as a teacher, I still wanted to make a contribution to the community.” – Paichie “The training I got from SPC is very eye-opening; I am grateful to be a member of SPC.” – May “My clients say it’s nice to talk to someone who listens without judgment.”- Vidula “I learn from the client’s conditions and experiences.” – Yulien Contact Jesleen Singh at Jesingh@fremont.gov or 510-574-2054 to become a Senior Peer Counselor.

AFS Student Internship Program

The City of Fremont partners with several universities in the area to provide a Student Internship Program that expands and complements the classroom experience. The students fully participate in providing support to older adults through supervised, hands-on experience in a real-world setting. As one of the interns said, “the AFS internship is a tangible aspect of higher learning that is often lacking in classroom and textbooks”.

This school year, we have six master’s level students supporting our counseling program from San Jose State University (SJSU) and Palo Alto University (PAU). Their main responsibilities are providing individual, group, and family therapy, developing care plans, and working with other community providers to maximize support for their clients.

Please meet and welcome future social workers and counselors who partner with the Human Services Department in making a difference in client’s lives.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go…All on Transit!

Teresa recently attended a Travel Training Workshop at the Age Well Center where she was surprised to learn that her new senior Clipper card provides a 62.5% discount on BART. The workshop, a free service provided by Ride-On Tri-City!, teaches older adults and people with disabilities how to ride transit.

While Teresa and the other workshop participants waited at the bus stop on the second day of training, Ashley, the workshop facilitator, showed the class how to check the real-time departures of the AC Transit buses and BART trains they planned to take. The participants marveled at how easy it was to plan trips on their phones using Google or Apple maps. Teresa shared how she had stopped going to San Francisco to visit museums because driving, parking and bridge toll costs made these trips a hassle. Now, armed with her new transit knowledge, she was excited to resume her museum outings.

Join Ride-On Tri-City! for an upcoming workshop to start your own transit adventures! Workshops are offered in English, Mandarin and Spanish.

THE AGE WELL CENTER AT SOUTH FREMONT’S OPEN HOUSE BREAKFAST A SUCCESS!

The Age Well Center at South Fremont located off Warren Ave hosted its first Open House Breakfast on January 17. Older adults and elected officials had a great time visiting the modern center and eating a free hot breakfast prepared by Chefs Luis and Marc. Mingling, learning about programs, and participating in class demonstrations was a highlight. Volunteers did a great job providing tours to over 100 new guests. As a result of the Open House Breakfast, new guests became members (membership is valid at both Age Well Centers), signed up for classes and attended lunch. The event was a success and staff are strongly considering making it an annual event to expose new community members to the center!

Become a Member Today and Avoid Class Fees

Effective March 1, all classes starting Spring Quarter will now have fees except for the following essential classes: English as a Second Language, Technology, City or outside agency/partner led classes, events, and cultural/special interest groups. Members will not be impacted by the fee changes and will continue to enjoy an array of free classes. If you are not a member, become one today and save at least $15 each quarter! Age Well Center Membership is $38 for Fremont residents and $48 for non-residents. Membership fee waivers and financial aid are available for low-income households who qualify. For information on how to become a member, please visit the Age Well Centers.

City Seeks Input for NEW Multi-Generational Community Center at Central Park

Plans for a new multi-generational, multi-use community center at Central Park are underway, and the City wants your input. City Council adopted a Parks and Recreation Master Plan in 2022 which identified a new community center as a top priority. The $40 million project will act as a social hub at Central Park, featuring expansive views of the lake and hills. Included will be a large event space, rooms for exercise, dancing, and learning, outdoor plazas, and parking. An adjoining gymnasium will be constructed when additional funding is secured. The planning phase is in progress and the City is seeking community input as the building and site are defined. Visit my.fremont.gov/newcommunitycenter to complete the survey and sign up for updates.

The City of Fremont does not discriminate on the basis of disability. If you need an accommodation please contact the Human Services Department at 510.574.2050 /agewellcenters agewellcenters@fremont.gov 510.790.6600 or 510.742.7540 city.fremont.gov/agewellcenters
