He is totally blind due to his premature birth and the high level of oxygen in his incubator. He grew up in a dysfunctional family with an alcoholic father. He adapted to his blindness and dysfunction by being well-organized and is the oldest of 5 children. His sisters live in Fremont. They help him with shopping, chores, and reading mail.

She has significant medical and mental health conditions. Her medical conditions cause weakness and the need for using an electric wheelchair and a voice amplifier to be heard by others. She is isolated from years of not being able to speak above a whisper. A voice amplifier device would empower her to use her voice and be better able to self-advocate, as well as connect with others and make friends or build a sense of community. For most of her life, the retiree helped people in the hospital as a nursing assistant. She lives with her daughter, since she cannot afford to live independently. She is struggling financially as a result of helping her son and grandson.
