Her husband has beginning Alzheimer’s. They do not receive public assistance and have found themselves in need of 24-hour care, so they will have to cover the cost themselves.

She had developed dementia, and he was her primary caregiver through the end of her life. He took a fall in the last year, and now uses a walker. He is very lonely.

Senior Name (modified for privacy): Larry Senior Story: Senior is 62 years old. He is living alone in Senior Housing in Fremont. He is totally blind due to his premature birth and the high level of oxygen in his incubator. He grew up in a dysfunctional family with an alcoholic father. He adapted to his blindness and dysfunction by being well-organized and is the oldest of 5 children.

His sisters live in Fremont. They help him with shopping, chores, and reading mail.

Senior Name (modified for privacy): Terry Senior Story: Terry lives in a board and care facility, and has little social support. The senior has limited income. She has significant medical and mental health conditions.

Her medical conditions cause weakness and the need for using an electric wheelchair and a voice amplifier to be heard by others. She is isolated from years of not being able to speak above a whisper. A voice amplifier device would empower her to use her voice and be better able to self-advocate, as well as connect with others and make friends or build a sense of community.

She is not eligible for Meals on Wheels, since she is not homebound. Unfortunately, she cannot travel to the food bank because she cannot afford to pay for gas for her car. Her ability to transport herself would lead to feeling empowered.

When at home, she enjoys spending time watching Spanish novelas on TV and family activity on Facebook.

She enjoys laughing and chatting, which takes her mind off of her pain and bad memories. She used to craft frequently but is no longer able to. For fun, she enjoys going out to eat, and going to the movies once a month or so.

Senior Name (modified for privacy): Miranda & Wilson Senior Story: Senior is 79 years old and a long-time resident of Fremont. She is responsible for taking care of her 59-year-old son with physical disabilities, and her 20-year-old grandson with mental disabilities.

For most of her life, the retiree helped people in the hospital as a nursing assistant. She lives with her daughter, since she cannot afford to live independently. She is struggling financially as a result of helping her son and grandson.
