Older adults are encouraged to engage in a routine of aerobic, muscle-toning, and balanceimproving exercises weekly to maintain their physical strength. People who exercise regularly also see improvements in mental health, cognitive function, and emotional, psychological, and social well-being. By adopting an exercise regimen, individuals can discover newfound independence, enjoy a more fulfilling life, and combat persistent health issues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends exercise as an important part of healthy aging, www.cdc.gov/physical-activity-basics

It’s never too late to start being physically active! Review the Age-Friendly Fremont newsletter and select activities you enjoy and that match your abilities. You are more likely to keep up with an exercise routine if it’s fun rather than a chore. Bring your friends along to make it an enjoyable social occasion, or make new friends as you increase your physical activity. Whether it’s indoors or outside, the possibilities are endless!

SUZANNE SHENFIL, HUMAN SERVICES DIRECTOR, TO RETIRE
After more than 46 years of dedicated service to the City of Fremont’s Human Services Department, Suzanne Shenfil has announced that she will retire at the end of August. Under her leadership, the department has received many awards for its innovation and ability to build community partnerships, including the Community Partnership for Older Adults grant and Grantmakers in Aging, Diversity Award.
As an advocate for others, Suzanne dedicated much of her career to championing equity and inclusion, fostering and celebrating diversity, strengthening relationships for families, and enhancing the quality of life for all. As part of her advocacy, Suzanne developed a long-term plan for Fremont’s aging population, which included the opening of the City’s first Age Well Center 40+ years ago and in 2021, the second Age Well Center, in South Fremont. 25 years ago, she created Fremont’s Family Resource Center, which has provided quality services to thousands of community members. More recently, Suzanne has led efforts to develop compassionate programs, such as the Housing Navigation Center, to assist Fremont’s unhoused population.
The programs and services developed under Suzanne’s tenure as our Human Services Director leave a legacy that will have a lasting impact on the Fremont community for years to come.
