CAPS (Community Ambassador Program for Seniors) “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” Anthony J. Angelo Aging and Family Service’s Community Ambassador Program for Seniors (CAPS) embodies this value of caring. Prior to the pandemic, CAPS was very active in the Tri-City community. The inability to meet in person and work directly with people required a change in the way they served their communities. CAPS volunteers rose to this challenge and provided information and support via telephone calls, and when possible, they were back in their communities meeting and helping. In May 2023, CAPS was able to successfully host a two-day training for newly recruited and existing CAPS volunteers and built up the team. The group quickly stepped up and reached out to their communities, which include cultural groups, religious affiliates, social networks, neighborhoods, and places where older adults meet. Through tabling efforts at large events, meeting with individuals one-on-one, or sharing info within their smaller groups, CAPS volunteers ensured that information was shared equally among older adults. Their compassion for others drives them to volunteer their time for this important and worthy effort. Without their caring and involvement, many communities would lack the information and support they critically need!
