Benefits of Multi-Generational Family Living

The City of Fremont’s Human Services Department is dedicated to assisting community members of all ages, live healthy and happy lives. Housing is a basic human need that impacts many aspects of one’s life and this month we highlight the many benefits of multi-generational living. Family gatherings, shared experiences, and memories are just a few benefits. Living together helps to strengthen bonds, improve communication, and emotional well-being, particularly for older adults who may experience loneliness and isolation.

Families can save money by pooling resources and sharing expenses. There can also be better care for children and older adults. Sharing responsibilities can improve eldercare and childcare, reducing the need for expensive services.

To learn more about multi-generational services, including peer caregiver support, case management, and mental health resources at Aging and Family Services, reach out to the Senior Info Line at 510-574-2041 or visit: city.fremont.gov/seniorinfo. For details on mobility and transportation services, contact Ride-On TriCity! at 510-574-2053 or visit:

city.fremont.gov/rideontricity. For community support and mental health assistance, connect with the Family Resource Center at 510-574-2000 or visit: city.fremont. gov/frc. For behavioral healthcare and family support services, call the Youth and Family Services Division at 510-574-2100 or visit: city.fremont.gov/yfs

To boost awareness, the center will offer a complimentary breakfast to attendees stopping by with a friend or neighbor who has never been to the AWC!

*Bring a friend or neighbor who’s not registered at the AWC to dine for free; otherwise breakfast is $5.50. Tours, class demonstrations, and newsletters will be provided. For more information and to RSVP, call 510-742-7540.

Why?

Many of our elder friends and neighbors suffer from depression, isolating illnesses, grief due to the loss of a loved one, and loneliness.

Who?

The Tri-Cities Senior Peer Counseling Program is seeking warm and compassionate volunteers to assist seniors in our community. We are looking for people at least 50 years of age and older to participate in a 36-hour training. There are no educational requirements — we believe life has been your teacher.

Who sponsors this program?

The Tri-Cities Senior Peer Counseling Program is part of City of Fremont’s Human Services Department.

Sounds good but does it work? Yes! We hear from the people we serve that they feel they have found someone who truly cares. The Senior Peer Counselors report they get back more than they give.

How to apply?

For more information or to sign up now, email Jesleen Singh, MSW at jesingh@fremont. gov or call 510-574-2064.
