Hours: Monday-Friday 8am—4.30pm 510.742.7540

Earth Day is April 22, but Earth Month is a monthlong emphasis on the planet, sustainability, and how you can make the world a better place. In celebration of Earth Month here are some useful recycling tips to help the environment:

• Recycle responsibly and keep it simple: stick to the basic items like paper, cardboard, bottles, jars, jugs, plastic containers and metal cans. Containers should be gently rinsed to remove liquids and food residue. Tip: Styrofoam and plastic bags are not accepted in your recycling bin.

• Use your green bin for compostable items such as yard trimmings, food scraps, and food-soiled items like paper towels, napkins, plates, cups, etc.

• Use the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 41149 Boyce Road for free drop-off of syringes, medication, batteries, paint, electronics, and other household hazardous waste items. For more information call 1.800.606.6606. See back page for Earth Day Event Information.

Save some money while you’re at it!

• Contact Republic Services for information on discounted garbage collection rates for older adults (must be over 70 years old to be eligible). Call 510.657.3500.

Questions?

Contact Environmental Services at 510.494.4570, email at environment@fremont.gov — visit their website at city.fremont.gov/environment for information on recycling, composting, and trash collection services.

WE VOLUNTEERS!

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH

April is National Volunteer Month. The Human Services Department and its Age Well Centers rely heavily on volunteers from our community. Many of our programs would be difficult to run if we did not have dedicated, compassionate, and friendly volunteers. Volunteers play a key role in our day to day operations at both Age Well Centers. They help people register for classes, lunches, and trips. They volunteer to clean, prepare hearty meals, and maintain gardens.

Volunteers are valued at the City, in our Age Well Centers, and throughout the community. Without them we could not do what we do! Fremont is diverse and we are fortunate to have volunteers who can speak the languages of our community. The Human Services Department and other agencies are always looking for volunteers. If you want to volunteer stop by the Age Well Centers today!

If you know an adult 55+ that needs support from a volunteer, please call the Senior Infoline at 510.574.2041. If you or a family member are interested in volunteering, contact an agency you admire or go to volunteermatch.org to explore other opportunities. Volunteering gives a great sense of pride and purpose. Volunteer today!
