Earth Day is April 22, but Earth Month is a monthlong emphasis on the planet, sustainability, and how you can make the world a better place. In celebration of Earth Month here are some useful recycling tips to help the environment: •

Recycle responsibly and keep it simple: stick to the basic items like paper, cardboard, bottles, jars, jugs, plastic containers and metal cans. Containers should be gently rinsed to remove liquids and food residue. Tip: Styrofoam and plastic bags are not accepted in your recycling bin. Use your green bin for compostable items such as yard trimmings, food scraps, and food-soiled items like paper towels, napkins, plates, cups, etc.

Use the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 41149 Boyce Road for free drop-off of syringes, medication, batteries, paint, electronics, and other household hazardous waste items. For more information call 1.800.606.6606. See back page for Earth Day Event Information.

Save some money while you’re at it! • Contact Republic Services for information on discounted garbage collection rates for older adults (must be over 70 years old to be eligible). Call 510.657.3500. Questions? Contact Environmental Services at 510.494.4570, email at environment@fremont.gov — visit their website at city.fremont.gov/environment for information on recycling, composting, and trash collection services.
