FALL PREVENTION AWARENESS WEEK

SEPTEMBER 15-19

Falls Prevention Awareness Week is recognized in September as a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the proactive steps you can take to reduce the risk of a fall.

Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors. Fall prevention efforts aim to address potential hazards in the environment, in the home, and improve physical abilities like balance and strength through exercise. Essential components of fall prevention include wearing proper footwear, staying active, reviewing medications, vision and hearing checks, and incorporating home modifications.

The risk of falling increases with age and experiencing a fall, regardless of whether it results in an injury, can greatly impact one’s quality of life.

Successful strategies have been developed to reduce and prevent falls. Through practical

lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based fall prevention programs, public awareness, and community partnerships the number of falls among older adults can be substantially reduced! The Human Services Department in collaboration with Washington Health Hospital will be having a free Fall Prevention Seminar on September 23. Check the back page for details and register today!
