MAKING A DIFFERENCE: EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS TRAINING
As part of the State of California’s LISTO’s campaign the City of Fremont Human Services Department worked with the Public Health Institute to help adults 55+ become better prepared for emergencies. LISTOS (which means “ready” in Spanish) is a statewide initiative by Governor Newsom and the Office of Emergency Services. When natural disasters strike like earthquakes and fires, adults 55+ are impacted greater than the rest of the population. The LISTOS campaign and the Aging and Family Services Division aimed to empower adults 55+ to get prepared before the next natural disaster to change their fate. The 4 Steps to Emergency Preparedness booklet taught four easy steps to prepare for a disaster:
ALT 4-step booklet.indd 1
3/31/20 9:22 AM
•
Find five trusted allies and share your plan
•
Prioritize your health needs and create lists
•
Create emergency supply kits
•
Plan how and when to evacuate
Practicing the emergency preparedness steps in the booklet will help people know how to protect themselves and others, including family members and the community. The Aging and Family Services Division is happy to share that 12,312 people received an Emergency Preparedness training and/ or booklet. If you are interested in taking a future training session email njordan@fremont.gov. If you just want a booklet to fill out on your own, email mdominguez@fremont.gov.
