Did you know that most home fires are preventable? The Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to come together. But holiday decorations, increased use of candles and fireplaces, home heating devices, and increased home cooking mean greater risk of fire. Here are some tips for a fire-safe holiday season:
Holiday Decorating
Keep lit candles away from holiday decorations and anything that can burn. Keep decorations a minimum of three feet away from the fireplace opening and heating equipment. Replace any worn or frayed holiday light strings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the maximum number of light strands to connect. To avoid damaging cords, use clips not nails or staples to hang lights. Keep doorways clear.
Smoke Alarms
Test your smoke alarms semi-annually. As a no-cost service to older adults, the Fremont Fire Department will service your smoke alarm and batteries. If you are interested in having a smoke alarm installed or maintained call 510.494.4246.
Holiday Entertaining and Home Cooking
Supervise children around lit candles. Place candles out of the way of pets and critters. Use a fireplace screen, except when tending the fire. In the kitchen, don’t place anything other than cookware near the burners. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop. Remain in the home while food is cooking; use a timer as a reminder. Have a fire extinguisher in your home. If a small fire occurs and you have any doubt about whether you can safely fight it — get out and call 9-1-1! When you leave the room or an apartment, close the door to help contain the fire. We wish you a happy and safe holiday season!

Grocery Rescue Program Volunteers
Needed
Do you think you’d enjoy helping out your community by handing out free groceries? The Age Well Centers are looking for volunteers on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9.30—11.00am to distribute donated groceries to adults 55+. The time donated helps keep food out of the landfills and saves your fellow neighbor some funds. Contact Chef David Lee today at 510.790.6600 or dlee@fremont.gov for more information.
The League of Volunteers provides new toys to thousands of Tri-City children during the December Holiday Season. Stop by either Age Well Center to drop a toy in the red toy bins by Thursday, December 15. Unwrapped and unopened toys are greatly appreciated! LOV collects new, unwrapped toys from more than 100 LOV Toy Barrel locations in Fremont, Newark and Union City.
Toys are sorted and distributed to select non-profit agencies, which put them under the trees and into the hands of children in the Tri-City area. Thank you in advance for your generosity and filling up the red bins at the AWC’s!
